          1 out of 5 stars a photocopy?.......2007-03-14

I couldn't even read it! This book came to me off of the photocopy machine.. with half the pages missing and the rest were very poor quality.

Very disappointing for a $50 book. It will be returned.

          5 out of 5 stars Very creative.......2005-10-11

There are many interesting ideas within this book that will help those teaching online courses that include forums. It's not another technology book, but looks at ways to get people communicating online. I like the design template and found it helpful.

          4 out of 5 stars A new online teacher.......2005-09-06

I am a new online teacher and found this book to be a good resource. I like the template and the way it is divided into openners, closers, review exercises, and even peer learning. I have used several of the ideas in the book and they have worked well. I just wish there were more examples, but the content is well researched.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for online teachers.......2005-09-06

This is an excellent book and very helpful if you are designing online learning without lots of bells and whistles. I liked that it was based on theory and had lots of creative ideas for making e learning both fun and educational. It's not a gamer book, so maybe the title is a bit misleading, but if you are looking to bring some of the interactivity you might experience in the classroom to the web, this is a useful resource.

          1 out of 5 stars What games???.......2005-04-14

I have been creating interactive media including e-learning for over 12 years, been a Professor of interactive media and e-learning design for over 8 years, and am currently seeking a PhD in E-Learning. This book is not worth the money. The information in it is only representational of the typical online instruction with message board usage. There are no interactive gaming examples or information for creating e-learning games. The title is extremely misleading.

The same information at a cheaper price with an easier read and better examples can be found in "Engaging the Online Learner: Activities and Resources for Creative Instruction" by Conrad and Donaldson.

Alan Boss is a theoretical planetologist: he imagines how and where planets might form. Looking for Earths is his account of the first discoveries of planets around other stars, which he rightly calls "a step as significant as Neil Armstrong's first step onto the Moon." Because Boss is a leading theoretician and a member of various committees and advisory bodies, he had a trackside seat for the race but is free from the bias that comes from actually running. He is better (and much more honest) than most astronomers at describing the infighting, boredom, professional feuds, bad donuts, and hard work that go into doing Big (i.e. astronomically expensive) Science. Boss includes an acronym glossary, so you can wrap your brain around sentences such as "The SISWG agreed that Michael Shao's design for OSI met the requirements for AIM." And he proves that you can consult for the government and still maintain a sense of humor, as when he says that "51 Pegasi's planet must have formed more or less at its predicted location, and then been dragged kicking and screaming inward toward its star."

The late 1990s have seen the start of one of the great ages of discovery, and Boss's excitement is palpable. "In the distant future, a thousand years or two from now, aliens will reach an Earth-like planet orbiting a star in the Sun's neighborhood.... Our descendents will be those aliens." --Mary Ellen Curtin

              Book Description

The ultimate insider's account of astronomy's fantastic voyage in search of brave new worlds in faraway galaxies

              "Highly recommended." -Science and Technology

"Full of humor, heartbreak, and a deep understanding of the ardor and luck that compose years of research. . . . The reader becomes not merely a receiver of Boss's vision, but a fellow explorer." -Astronomy

              "A rewarding account." -Scientific American

Are we alone in the universe . . . or are there other planets generating and sustaining life? The question may be as old as civilization, but in the twilight of a century marked by countless frustrated quests to find other solar systems, several teams of pioneering astronomers have at last discovered a rich crop of mammoth, Jupiter-sized gas planets -the first compelling evidence that there may indeed be life in other galaxies.

In Looking for Earths, a prominent planetary scientist takes us along on this thrilling hunt for new life, revealing the behind-the-scenes stories of scientific determination, frustration, and triumph. Ushering us to the mountaintop observatories that house the world's most powerful telescopes, and into the tension-filled scientific meetings where new results are announced and old results overturned, Alan Boss brings the process of exploration vividly alive. Experience the roller-coaster ride as intricate observations of minuscule stellar wobbles raise hopes that at last a true planet has been found, only to be almost immediately shattered by more powerful observations. Boss also introduces the principal players whose dreams defied all odds and made the first major discovery possible.

Like no other book, Looking for Earths captures the lively tension between theory and observation that defines cutting-edge astronomical discovery, along with the heated battles that will determine the direction of big-ticket American astronomy for years to come.

"You will find no better introduction to one of the truly revolutionary developments in modern astronomy."-Natural History

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Extrasolar Enterprise.......2002-06-29

If you're content to have your view of the universe stop right where it is, don't read this book. But if you want to know the planetary exploration history and latest information about the search for planets beyond our solar system, then pick up "Looking for Earths."

Alan Boss, a NASA adviser at the Carnegie Institution, has presented us with an extremely well written, smart and well-informed account of the search for "extrasolar planets", those beyond our solar systems. Just in case anyone thinks that's an easy step-you know, just pull up the telescope and point it at the stars, here is his description of the difficulty:

"Trying to see an extrasolar planet right next to its star is akin to trying to see a tiny mirror being held by a person standing next to a powerful carbon-arc searchlight that is pointed right at you-you can't see the light from the mirror because you are blinded by the far brighter light from the
searchlight itself. Human beings could start at the sky until
their eyes popped without ever seeing a planet belonging to another star."

What Boss does is quickly but clearly tell us the history of planetary exploration, tracing thoughts and discoveries,
starting with Pythagoras in the sixth century B.C.E., who thought the Earth was fixed an unmoving, then explaining the brilliance of Copernicus and then Kepler, Brahe, Giordano Bruno, Kant and other early giants.

Then he moves on to such contemporary heroes as Peter van de Kamp, Daniel Goldin and George Gatewood as they come up, rapid-fire, it seems, relatively speaking, with proof of the extrasolar planets' existence, some coming so quickly that scientists joked about subscribing to "Planet of the Week".

What Boss does especially well, besides writing in utterly understandable language, is connect the dots, as it were.

If you read this book, you'll get a wonderful look at scientific thinking and development, instead of getting science piecemeal.

Boss has a rather interesting approach: starting with
Chapter 3, he dates events as he opens the chapter, so that each chapter, and often sub-chapters start with the date of the discovery or event that led to a discovery. It's a neat way of encompassing history and allows us to see how quickly ideas can move along. Most obvious to me was the sense that discoveries are speeding up-each development happens a little more quickly and closely to its predecessor, feeding yet the next discovery.

The science outlined in this book is totally comprehensible to most teenagers and adults and probably some pre-teens as well, if they're reasonably aware of astronomical issues. You may want to skip some of the deeper science and just read about the discoveries and who made them. Charts and photos accompany
several chapters to help explain who did what and why it was important.

Anyone wanting to know more about what's next, and not have to get all their science from Star Trek would be well advised to read this book.

Oprah Book Club® Selection, March 1999: With five novels to her credit, including the acclaimed The Weight of Water, Anita Shreve now offers a skillfully crafted exploration of the long reach of tragedy in The Pilot's Wife. News of Jack Lyons's fatal crash sends his wife into shock and emotional numbness:
Kathryn wished she could manage a coma. Instead, it seemed that quite the opposite had happened: She felt herself to be inside of a private weather system, one in which she was continuously tossed and buffeted by bits of news and information, sometimes chilled by thoughts of what lay immediately ahead, thawed by the kindness of others ... frequently drenched by memories that seemed to have no regard for circumstance or place, and then subjected to the nearly intolerable heat of reporters, photographers and curious on-lookers. It was a weather system with no logic, she had decided, no pattern, no progression, no form.
The situation becomes even more dire when the plane's black box is recovered, pinning responsibility for the crash on Jack. In an attempt to clear his name, Kathryn searches for any and all clues to the hours before the flight. Yet each discovery forces her to realize that she didn't know her husband of 16 years at all. Shreve's complex and highly convincing treatment of Kathryn's dilemma, coupled with intriguing minor characters and an expertly paced plot, makes The Pilot's Wife really take off.

4 out of 5 stars "a pure and undiluted happiness".......2007-09-04

...that (above) is a line from Anita Shreve's book in describing Kathryn's feelings when she was a young woman newly in love with her husband. I loved that line(obviously) as she writes this novel beautifully and poignantly. There are some things that annoyed me(such as the situation with Jack's mother; I don't feel that mystery was explained well enough) but in general, this was a very interesting story and very enjoyable to read. There is a wide range of emotions felt throughout, along with an element of suspense, but leaves you with a peaceful feeling.

                    4 out of 5 stars Very absorbing.......2007-08-27

This was my introduction to Anita Shreve's books. I certainly loved it and went on to buy others. This is the gripping story of that infamous "knock at the door" and what happens next, after Kathryn, Jack's devoted wife, opens it. Could the unthinkable have happened? Her life changes dramatically and everything she has ever believed in starts changing shape. Kathryn starts digging for answers. It's an emotional roller coaster all the way through.

The plot is masterful and absorbing, the emotions rendered vividly. An entertaining book indeed, with a truly unexpected end.

                    1 out of 5 stars Too Wordy.......2007-06-25

I picked up this book because the storyline of a husband with two wives seemed interesting. However, this twist did not appear to almost the end of the book. I felt that once Shreve starting discussing the other wife, it was rushed. Also, the writing was extremely wordy. I often found myself skimming paragraphs and sometimes even pages, which I NEVER do. I love when an author describes a scene, a person, etc so that I can picture it but in my opinion, Shreve took it to an unnecessary extreme.

2 out of 5 stars how was this an oprah book club selection?.......2007-06-19

The ONLY reason why I picked up this book was
because it was an Oprah Book Club selection but
                    I was very disappointed.

For people who like light, breezy novels about
insecure, neurotic people, you'll love this book!
                    The characters were one-dimensional steretypes.
You have the daughter whose an only child who
has sex right after her dad's dies and the
unsuspecting wife who doesn't know what her
                    husband is up to.

The book was a quick and easy read but I found
myself PREDICTING the story chapters before
anything happens. Unlike a lot of books I've
read lately, this book at least had a plotline
that kept the story moving FORWARD but there
was almost too much dialogue at times. I thought
maybe the author was trying to rush through
                    to finish.

It almost would have been a better story if Jack
had just left his family to start a new one. Of
course, that will never happen because the book was
made into a cheesy, Lifetime movie.

I've heard good things about Shreve so I am going
to try this author again later because I believe
everyone, especially writers, deserve a second chance!

2 out of 5 stars What's the big deal about this book???.......2007-06-17

This was my second Anita Shreve book, and after I just couldn't get into the first one (A December Wedding) and found it miserably boring, several people suggested I read The Pilot's Wife because it is "fantastic". Again I was not pleased. Although the story progessed in a natural and logical manner, I had the entire plot line figured out in the first several chapters. Even if Shreve intended for the "twist" to be predictable and wanted to write more about the grieving process, she did not do that well. The antagonist's grieving process went from being extremely realistic to being overly cheesy and fake within a matter of sentences. The ending also had me sitting in my chair asking myself what in the world just happened! It was extremley abrupt and confusing. Quite frankly I don't see what the big deal is about this book or Anita Shreve.

Her first husband, a navy pilot, was shot down over Hanoi on Ho Chi Minh's birthday, 1967 and captured. In this book Dora shares letters Jim Griffin wrote home from the war and her own experiences during years of hopeful waiting, only to learn at the end of the conflict that her husband had died just days after capture. After the war Dora married Jim Bell, another POW who had survived seven an a half years in Hanoi, and she tells about his experiences and his nightmares.

This is a personal story of three people sharing many years of their life during a period in which our country was involved in military conflict with Vietnam. Reading this will help one to understand what commitment it took in survival and coping with life. The endurance of people in the book is remarkable and leaves one to better understand that love and devotion to the military members and their families does not go without great sacrifices.

Dora Griffin Bell tells the love story of being married to two Vietnam POW heroes but after reading "The Heroes' Wife", you realize Dora is also a hero. Her strength and courage during the worst of times makes her a role model for all military wives.

The book is written in such a way, that after completing it, I felt like Dora and I spent the weekend together as she told me about her experiences waiting 6 years for the return of her husband who was shot down in Vietnam and the joy of meeting Jim Bell (a returning POW) who has been her love (and husband) for the past 30 + years.

This is an inspiring story of love, courage and patriotism but you do not have be associated with the military to enjoy reading it. It is a reminder of the sacrifice our service people and their families make everyday. Something we all need to remember!

                      Book Description

Offering an inside look at military family life spanning WWII through the Korean and Vietnam Wars, this memoir not only chronicles the heroism of those in combat but that of the wives and families at home as they live under the constant shadow of potential loss. Married at the age of 22 to a dashing young jet pilot, young bride Gilberta Guth embarked on what was for many years a global journey, following her husband all over the world as he pursued his career. From their honeymoon in Las Vegas to an Ichibon sayonara and a St. Gobain au revoir to his final assignment in civilian life, she stood by his side and raised their four children. In the process she learned to cope with the tragic death of young pilots and how the other wives and family members comforted the widows and helped them pack up their children and leave the familial embrace of the military. Reproductions of letters, photos, and newspaper clippings further enrich this moving account of the challenges faced by a military family in both wartime and peacetime.

This could have been the story of my mother's life, one dominated by the war in Vietnam. No, she's not an American writer like Gilberta Guth whom I had the pleasure of meeting along with her husband, Howard Pierson, a former adviser to the Vietnamese Air Force. Reading Guth's book gave me a sense of what my mother lived through as the wife of a VNAF Skyraider pilot (my father) and the mother of four children. This is a lovely memoir, an important addition to the literature of war offering perspectives of an often silent but important group called spouses.

                      This book sales along from the opening paragraph. The author lives on an airforce base, and meets and marries a jet pilot. They live on overseas bases and serve in different wars. To some extent she lives the epitomy of the American icon life. Dances and parties in the evening, and each morning her husband, a bona fide warrior, takes off, perhaps never to return. Guth is a talented writer who offers profound insight into the life of the families behind our people serving in wars abroad;

This is a beautifully written novel about a happily married woman, Kathryn Lyons, whose husband, Jack, is an airline pilot. They have a teenage daughter named Mattie. They live in her lovely childhood home in Ely, New Hampshire. For sixteen years life has been good. Then her husband goes down with his plane, just ten miles off the coast of Ireland, and ever so slowly the very fabric of their life together unravels.

The media frenzy, surrounding the explosion of the plane that her husband was piloting, brings to light the plain fact that her husband had been, unbeknownst to her, leading a double life, a life that had not included her or their daughter, but had, most emphatically, excluded them. This is a story of Kathryn's navigation of the emotional roller coaster that was to become her life. She is thrust into a maelstrom of grief and disbelief, as she struggles to reconcile her memory of the man she thought she knew, with the reality of who he now appeared to have been.

This is a remarkable book, written in clean spare prose that underscores some of the very emotion laden issues with which it grapples. At times infinitely sad and poignant, it is a story of betrayal and splintered memories, as well as a very absorbing, skillfully told tale of adultery that will hold the reader in its thrall.

The Pilot's Wife by Anita Shreve is a very well-written and unexpected story about (if you can't guess already...) the wife of a commercial pilot. The story immediately captured my attention and I found that I couldn't put it down.

The wife discovers her husband's plane has crashed, he has passed away with it and the story takes off from there. During the story there are continuous twists and turns that keep the reader wanting to hear more or thinking what is going to happen next.

The widowed woman has to make sense of her husband's plane crash because accusations immediately come that it was a suicide. She also has to maintain her sanity for her teenaged daughter who was a complete "daddy's girl" and as such is obviously distraught. Kathryn (the pilot's wife) is helped along the way by a man who works for the airline. With his help, she not only uncovers the truth about the crash, but the secret life that he had been leading for the entire time they were married.

Her husband kept deep and dangerous secrets that will leave you with your mouth agape and your heart aching. This was such a great book, and I highly recommend it. The only negative thing I can say is about the ending. I wish there was one more page... I'd like to know a little more, but I guess that's a good thing when a book wants you to come up with your own ideas for how the story ends. Great book, don't leave it out of your collection!

1 out of 5 stars help me fly away.......2007-04-03

I'd heard such good things about this author and I have no idea why. This novel is terrible. A pilot dies and the widow comes to find out she wasn't his only "wife". It could have been a great novel about love/loss/betrayal - but it just goes on and on as the widow tries to unravel a mystery that my cat could have solved in the time it takes to clean his ears. You finally find out that there is "another woman" and the novel ends - no rage, no Texas Chainsaw Massacre, no "how could he do this to me?" just "the end". There are much better mystery novels out there - like, pretty much anything by Michael Connelly or Amanda Eyre Ward's "How to be Lost" - but not this!

5 out of 5 stars BETRAYAL AND SHATTERED MEMORIES..........2006-11-17

At times infinitely sad and poignant, it is a story of shattered memories, as well as a very absorbing, skillfully told tale of adultery and betrayal that will hold the reader in its thrall.
