Second-Hand Book-Bin Candidate Extraordinaire.......2002-06-26

Here is an investment volume screaming for a reason to exist. Since there are now at least a couple of near up-to-the-moment resources on convertible securities information, anyone who picks up a book like this is likely to be looking for some insights or practical advice on how to buy and handle these increasingly complex instruments. If that's what the reader is looking for, s/he won't find it here. So what does one find?

Over the past 2 years I've rummaged through several Noddings books, his work from the 1970s to this present volume, and they're all cliffhangers. That is, Noddings promises to guide you somewhere, and indeed he guides you to the top of a cliff --where he leaves you hanging. Interestingly, the best observations he currently offers concern warrant hedging, which is getting increasingly difficult to do successfully. Thus what's the point of the observations, here? Most of the rest of the book is a bit like looking at an owner's manual for something you don't own, with lots of diagrams and no supporting text/instructions.

Although this is an investment volume screaming for a reason to exist, there is a screaming need for good how-to literature on convertibles and convertible hedging. Noddings should have filled this need decades ago (when he started writing prolifically about this stuff), and might have kept a worthy and useful corner niche to readers hungry to understand this market. Instead, Noddings has a much larger and expanding corner of the second-hand book bin, which is exactly where this volume will go once you've spent about 20 minutes with it.

Not great........2002-06-17

A large proportion of this book is devoted to tables of data that by the time you get round to reading will be well out of date. ...Furthermore, as a relative newcomer to convertibles, I frankly I can't see who would find this book useful. For beginners, it skimps over the details leaving you with the feeling you haven't learned very much and the pages and pages of numbers leave you feeling angry that you've wasted your money. As for the experts, anyone who's actually in the business would know all this stuff already, and would know enough to fill in the gaps (and there are a lot of gaps). Which begs the question: why and for whom was this book written ?!

The most valuable management and patient care tool I have.......2005-05-11

As a registered nurse of 20 years' experience, I have endlessly heard about setting goals with patients and setting my own goals. I cringed every time I heard this, because setting goals is NOT my style. Then this lovely book came along and changed the way I approached patient care planning with the patient and the way I approached planning in my own life.
We were always taught to work with patients to set goals for their care. And, for years, I had seen a blank curtain come down over eyes and faces when I started talking about goals. Once I understood the principles in this book, I started changing my approach and even just my words, so that my predominantly problem-solver patients were not intimidated or put off. What an improvement.
This book has not received the ongoing attention it merits, but I recommend to you that you read it and put it into practice. Its testimony is in significantly more effective nursing care planning with my patients. If my wide variety of patients generally respond better with the application of Bobb Biehl's principles, it will no doubt work in any other setting where you interact in planning with people. Do not knock this book until you have tried Biehl's principles in actual practice.

Had great expectations for this book, most of which went unfulfilled. A friend recommended it based on the initial concept of the difference between goal setters and problem solvers. Unfortunately, that initial concept is pretty much the entire book. It just gets repeated with a lot of exclamation points. I'm not surprised that this wasn't reprinted or that it didn't have a paperback edition. There simply isn't enough substance to warrant either. I wish that there was; I was truly looking for helpful ways to further understand and benefit from the difference between the two approaches. Unfortunately, the goal of this book turns out to be a problem unsolved.

Another one of those "just two kinds of people" concepts. They are the goal setters and the problem solvers. Read it. Really liked it. Gave it away thinking I'd replace it. Unavailable. Thought it would be a big seller and available in paperback. Still looking to replace it and maybe give as gifts to others.

I'm one of those problem solvers who is often frustrated by goal setters who have not "counted the cost". It's comforting to know that there may be nothing wrong with you if you don't like tossing your hat over the fence before knowing how you're going to get yourself over the fence.

Biehl brings insight and information on how and why problem solvers and goal setters are both needed and on how they need to work together.

As indicated on the blurb, this is probably the among closest you can get to the real questions. The format makes the book easy to carry along. Work through these questions and try to think one step beyond what they're asking for!

Many questions are good and useful for preparing the USMLE, not only for step 1 but also for step 2.

My first step on astrophotography.......2001-02-27

For the very beginner in astrophotography( like me) it is all you need( at least for a while).Dickinson and Newton used a clear text adding their expereance. The book begins talking about the universe, then goes to the basic camera on tripod( comets, moon and Earth shine, star trails, etc). To follow the Earth's movment(for those 10 minutes exposures), I learned and built my on Star Tracker - It is very precise and useful because I could find the south celestial pole in my first try as I learned from page 70. As I still didn't buy my own "good telescope", I am not the best person to say about Part 3: Probing Deeper- through the telescope; but it covers all the inicial steps,adaptation, films and filters for lunar /solar photos.The last part tell us how to use the CCD tecnology:choosing a CCD camera,how to color the image and to process it.For the one who want more detail on digital imaging, this is not your book. Bad points are: it does not teach you where(all) the "subjects" are ,missing on CCD shoftware; almost anything on Southern emisfere sky. Good point: a lot of amateurs photos, showing that you can do it. Finally, this is a very good inicial book FOR THE BEGINNER ASTROPHOTOGRAPHER.

Practical "real-world" advice and great pictures.......1999-10-23

I really like everything about this book. It offers great, practical advice on learning how to take "astro"photos. Many beautiful pictures also. I am currently building my own camera mount based on guidelines in book. Anyone interested in astronomy and/or photography should get it!

The book is great. Terry and Jack did a wonderful job. By the way I am on page 64 with the camera tracker. I noticed a typo on this web page under table of contents. You have Sides versus prints and should be SLIDES verses prints.

This Is A Coffee Table Book Not An Astrophotography Manual........1999-05-24

The photograghs of the deep sky objects in this book are as amazing as they are gorgeous. Especially, when one relalizes that the photos were done by "amateur" astronomers. But this is NOT a practical guide to astrophotography. This is a coffee table book which is why it is so deeply discounted.

Although this was the third of Kris Radish's books that I read, I found myself totally taken with her writing, her characters and the delightful story that she so beautifully wove. I consider myself a true admirer of both what she has to say, and how she says it. A Must Read... you'll be so glad you did!

I purchased this book upon the recommendation of two friends of mine. Within the first 15 minutes I had laughed out loud and cried tears. This book strikes a chord with women everywhere - the pain we feel and the joy we experience. Grab a hanky and enjoy!

this is not the type of book i would buy but i agreed to read it for a book club and i'm soooo glad i did! it was about a group of woman who have been meeting for once a week for years and one day decided to just get up and go walking. they walked for several days and made world headlines and most importantly talked about and got off their chest deep dark secrets that was holding them back from living and getting on with their lives. basically they decided that they were not happy and decided to start making changes in their like that would make them happy! lovely book! ronda

Every woman I know who has read this book loves it........2007-03-18

I purchased this book after it was recommended by a client. I have since recommended it to my book club and numerous other women who have read and enjoyed it and purchased copies for their friends. To me this book highlights how women can be acquainted for long periods of time but not really know one another until they begin to reveal their untold stories. As relationships are forged among the characters, we become closer to their hearts and notice the treads of their stories that mirror our own.

I found the dialogue and descriptions in this book fun. It's an easy read and one that I continue to recommend.

Extraordinarily bad.......2006-12-09

This is a book that will make you ashamed of liking women's fiction.

It's like Kris Radish did a marketing survey of what themes are of interest to the demographic that buys women's fiction, picked the ten most "serious" (ie, whiny and sad) themes, and threw together a short story about each theme, with a minimum of thought, effort, or editing. Then she sent the characters from these stories off on a pointless hike together, so she could claim her collection of short stories was really a novel. But when she read back through it she realized that it had no spark, that the characters were all boring, and the walk they were on was pointless and stupid. But rather than fixing this, she added a bunch of observers who would point at the characters in the short stories, and proclaim them to be interesting, and their walk to be deeply meaningful. This does not make any of it meaningful or interesting.

I'm waiting for some mysogyinist to pop up on the talk show circuit and tell us that Kris Radish is his pen name, and he wrote his books as a thought experiment to prove that women will buy anything that lets them believe they are the victims while claiming to empower them.
