With expertly edited sections that include: anatomy, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and behavioural sciences, "Rypin's Basic Sciences Review" has everything medical and paramedical students need in order to build solid foundation in their studies. The book is very complete. It is elaborately illustrated; and offers explicit information on each of its broad sections. The quality of the information this book presents is hard to rival. Thus, it surprises me that potential buyers have continued to underrate it.

Customer Reviews:
Good as a quick refresher.......2003-07-04
I used this book as a quick revision. To tell you the truth, I don't think the questions represent the USMLE type, but rather they can be used as a quick refresher for the basic facts.
Many of the questions are VERY easy, which give you sometimes false reassurance that you'll pass any exam without studying!
Unfortunately, this book has many questions with the options like (All of the above) or (None of the above), which are not used in the USMLE-type questions.
The number options in each question is 4 i.e. a, b, c, and d.
There are many questions without proper explanation.
There are few questions with diagrams or pictures.
I think the questions can also be used in a "quiz" in a medical curriculum (if there is such a quiz).
Chapters include:
Medical Qualifying Exams, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, General microbiology and immunology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Public health and community medicine, and Behavioral sciences.
This book comes in 233 pages, published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Publishers; 3rd edition (1997).

A FINE REVISIONAL COMPENDIUM.......2003-01-28
Like the "Rypin's Basic Sciences Review", this "Rypin's Clinical Sciences Review" is one book that I would describe as being near perfect.
It boasts of an extended coverage which include: internal medicine, surgery, psychiatry, paediatrics, epidermiology, and obstetrics and gynaecology.
The information in this revisional text are very concise. No extensive details: just all that students would need for quick revisions. Still, each chapter received generous illustrations. In a nutshell, this is the textbook to purchase if you are a medical student who need a single-volume revisional compendium. The attached questions and answers CD-ROM, which comes with this book provides the necessary parameter for self-evaluation.

Book Description
A decade ago, a nearly complete elasmosaur skeleton was found near Courtenay on Vancouver Island, in rocks dating from 80 million years ago, and it caused a sensation. Finds like this remind us that British Columbia is home to some of the richest marine fossil beds in the world, most of them on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands which lie along the geographically active "ring of fire" encircling the Pacific Ocean.
Written by two leading paleontologists, this concise and authoritative guide introduces fossils from the area, from delicate insect wings to razor-sharp shark teeth to coiled ammonites the size of truck tires, each of which was once a living part of an ancient ecosystem.
The book includes maps, charts and more than 200 fossil photographs, as well as information for locating, collecting, studying, photographing and preserving fossils, and notes on the ethics of fossil collecting.
Customer Reviews:
Readable, informative, excellent illustrations.......2007-08-13
Any reader who embarks upon reading this book as a first book on fossils will understand everything because the author, without being tedious, explains all terms as he goes along. The illustrations of the fossils are the clearest fossil illustrations I've ever seen. A guest illustrator provided line drawings of panoramas of life in the Cretaceous seas that will inspire many a "K - 12 and beyond" student with inspiration for their own dioramas. If you have to buy only one book on prehistoric sea life, this is the one.

Book Description
Adored bestselling author Diana Gabaldon brings us the first book in a new trilogy featuring many of the characters from her wildly popular Outlander series.
In her New York Times bestselling Outlander novels, Diana Gabaldon introduced millions of readers to a dazzling world of history and adventure—a world of vibrant settings and utterly unforgettable characters. Now one of these characters, Major Lord John Grey, opens the door to his own part of this world—eighteenth-century London, a seething anthill of nobility and rabble peopled by soldiers and spies, whores and dukes. Great Britain is battling France for supremacy on three continents—and life is good for a soldier.
The year is 1757. On a clear morning in mid-June, Lord John Grey emerges from London’s Beefsteak Club, his mind in turmoil. A nobleman and a high-ranking officer in His Majesty’s Army, Grey has just witnessed something shocking. But his efforts to avoid a scandal that might destroy his family are interrupted by something still more urgent: the Crown appoints him to investigate the brutal murder of a comrade in arms, who may have been a traitor.
Obliged to pursue two inquiries at once, Major Grey finds himself ensnared in a web of treachery and betrayal that touches every stratum of English society—and threatens all he holds dear. From the bawdy houses of London’s night-world to the stately drawing rooms of the nobility, and from the blood of a murdered corpse to the thundering seas ruled by the majestic fleet of the East India Company, Lord John pursues the elusive trails of a vanishing footman and a woman in green velvet, who may hold the key to everything—or nothing.
The early days of the Seven Years War come brilliantly to life in this historical mystery by an author whose unique and compelling storytelling has engrossed millions of readers worldwide.

Gay-themed historical mystery.......2007-10-03
London in 1757 is a time and place during which Lord John Grey, a nobleman and army officer, could be executed for being gay. In this first book, he investigates the death of a traitor. No sex scenes. It's still a good book. Full-length review available at Obsidian Bookshelf website (see my Amazon profile for URL).
highly readable.......2007-09-24
I am reading the Lord John books while waiting for the next Outlander. The one after "abosaa".I love Gabaldons work and must say that I have been more than completely engrossed with the Outlander novels, having read all six twice!!so I thought I'd give these a whirl. The novel was readable I enjoyed it.It did'nt WOW me though. I think that they lack the rich detail that her work contains that sucks you in and puts you there. I'm waiting for the second book to come we'll see what that one brings aye?
Lord John and the Private Matter.......2007-09-09
I trust Diana Gabaldon's research in all her books, so with that premise I have quite enjoyed learning about the military way of life in the middle of the eighteenth century, particularly as it applies to the officers. Of interest, also, are the everyday items of interest that populate all her books. The storyline, however, does not hold much interest to me. I hesitate to use the word "pedantic", but that is the one coming to mind. Her "Outlander" series, rich in detail, historical background, and storyline are among the very best, and I look forward to each new book (wouldn't they make great movies?).
Diana's attempt to "fill in the spaces" with her "Lord John" series falls short of the "Outland" books. However, I will read just about anything she wishes to put into print.
Exceptional fiction, par for the course with Gabaldon.......2007-09-08
I bought this book some time ago, but after reading the initial reviews, put it aside thinking I would be disappointed. When the second book in the series came out, I was prodded into reading this one. I am sorry that I put it off for so long never realizing that this was the same Lord John from the Outlander series. Gabaldon is an exceptional writer. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you like the Outlander series for all of its aspects, not merely the romance of Claire and Jamie, then you will enjoy the adventure, intrigue, and the psychological introspection and logical deduction of Lord Grey. He is a fascinating character, who I liked in the Outlander series and who I like even more. Thank you Gabaldon for lending your talent and expertise to the reader so that we might enjoy Lord John, his friends and family. A must read for anyone who likes adventure, military maneuvering, historical fiction, and brief references to the Outlander series. I found myself racking my memory for all that had transpired between Lord Grey and Jamie and Claire from the other series. I do certainly recollect his involvement at Aberdeen prison and then later in the American colonies, but this was a great peek into Lord John's life.
Rollicking Mystery.......2007-07-26
I have to admit that I had never before read Gabaldon's work, and that this was a desperate choice. I needed something fast to read, and nothing better was about. It was a pleasant surprise to find that Lord John Grey is a most interesting character and that Gabaldon can write exceptionally well.
Lord Grey is the main focus and finds himself mired in a potentially scandalous family situation, (cousin betrothed to a man with a possibly poxed "private member"), and a mysterious murder case that is connected to a case of missing military documents. All this, connected with Grey's ow proclivities toward sordid adventures makes for a very interesting romp through 1757 England.
With the mixed reviews that this book received, I can only assume that the other John Grey books are amazingly wonderful, as I really enjoyed this book myself. The characters are wonderfully complex, (and flawed), and there is a rich texture that underlies the entire narrative with its attention to detail.
For a desperate read, this was one excellent book and one that may just induce me to read some more of Diana Gabaldon's novels. For a good crime novel set in an age of genteel corruption, this one is hard to beat in my book. Recommended, for sure.
Customer Reviews:
Intriguing mystery!.......2007-05-04
Let me first say that I am a huge Diana Gabaldon fan. Her Outlander series is among the best historical fiction I have ever read. Those of you familiar with Lord John Gray from the Outlander series will enjoy seeing him in an expanded roll, away from the characters from Outlander. For an "Outlandish" reference, this story takes place after Lord John escorts Jamie Fraser to the farm in Hellwater to be a parolee after his prison term, but before Claire returns (midway through the Voyager book).
I was instantly captivated by this audio book. I'm not sure if it was because of Ms Gabaldon's rich description and very capable method of communicating the English language OR Mr. Woodman's melodious and sometimes sexy British accent. Most likely it was the winning combination of the two talents. In any case, this is a well done story with intrigue, scandal, and murder. It moves along quickly. Mr. Woodman does a good job with the different accents for some of the interesting secondary characters. (Note - there is a very subtle and brief scene with homosexuality in it. I did not find it uncomfortable at all.)
Lord John is an interesting main character with a range of emotions and he becomes a very capable investigator. The story begins because Lord John found out something about his cousin Olivia's fiancee that may break the engagement. In the process of investigating that problem, there is a murder of an army officer, and some suspicious things don't add up. The more Lord John investigates, the more he realizes that this case is a bigger "can of worms" than first imagined. So Lord John becomes sort of a Sherlock Holmes type character, leading us on a twisted and overlapping trail to the suspects.
I really enjoyed this story, but the reason I am not rating this audio book 5 stars is because I thought the ending could have been stronger. All the mysteries were solved, but I was slightly unsatisfied with Lord John's personal life. I thought the author sort of left him hanging ..... but maybe that was intentional because there will be more Lord John books planned in the future. I hope that is the case because I would seriously like to read more about him.
Product Description
Lord John is in a difficult spot. His cousin Olivia is engaged to marry the Honorable Joseph Trevelyan, but he has just observed something of a rather personal nature that, if confirmed, might put an end to any talk of marital bliss. Determined to investigate further, Lord John is distracted when the Crown calls for his services. A comrade in arms has been slain, and to complicate matters, the victim may have been a traitor. Now Lord John has not one, but two puzzling mysteries to solve.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting man, our Lord John.......2005-07-28
The story of intrigue, deception and covert operations was interesting but I was sorry that John Grey didn't find another 'true love.' I cannot imagine a reader understanding him or his near-obsession with Jamie Fraser if they haven't read the Outlander series. I thought for sure Jamie would show up here and I was disappointed he wasn't in this book. The timelines might have hindered the possiblility, I guess.
After getting to know Lord John a bit better here, I will say that Claire Fraser's almost rude treatment of him (in the other books)was uncalled for. John deeply loved Jamie, but he never slept with him, even though Jamie had extended to John a blatant invitation. I think Claire should have commended John and shown him some respect, as very few people would turn down a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be intimate with the person with whom they are in love.
