Moving book............2004-02-05
When I first heard about "Who moved My Cheese", I had to read it right away! the concepts were basic and realistic.
But now after reading "Having it all... and making it work" .. I was even more moved !
The authors ability to portray the fundamental concepts of time management is essential! Compared to previous books by Mills, I thought this one stood out the most. The simplicity in the style of writing really got me (the reader). I have read alot about the co-authors of the book aswell. Namely Sasha Mattu, in Norway my university has received a number of case studies published by her from Harvard Bussiness school. Her style of writing is higher then any author I have read, further it seems like her style is directly influced in the writings of "Having it all, and making it work"... Great work... looking foreward to more books by Sasha Mattu

Book Description
The Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global (IMAGE) satellite was launched in March 2000. As the first space mission dedicated to imaging the Earth's magnetosphere, IMAGE carries a comprehensive payload designed to image the major ion populations of the inner magnetosphere (out to distances of approximately 10 Earth radii). The scientific objective of the mission is to determine the global response of the magnetosphere to variations in the solar wind. This book, which should be of interest to researchers on the global aspects of magnetospheric physics, describes the latest results of the mission. Included are discoveries of many new aspects of the dynamics of the plasma sheet, ring current, plasmasphere, and proton aurora, which reveal a much more direct connection of the inner magnetosphere to the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field than was previously considered.

Oprah Book Club® Selection, June 2000: As any reader of The Mosquito Coast knows, men who drag their families to far-off climes in pursuit of an Idea seldom come to any good, while those familiar with At Play in the Fields of the Lord or Kalimantaan understand that the minute a missionary sets foot on the fictional stage, all hell is about to break loose. So when Barbara Kingsolver sends missionary Nathan Price along with his wife and four daughters off to Africa in The Poisonwood Bible, you can be sure that salvation is the one thing they're not likely to find. The year is 1959 and the place is the Belgian Congo. Nathan, a Baptist preacher, has come to spread the Word in a remote village reachable only by airplane. To say that he and his family are woefully unprepared would be an understatement: "We came from Bethlehem, Georgia, bearing Betty Crocker cake mixes into the jungle," says Leah, one of Nathan's daughters. But of course it isn't long before they discover that the tremendous humidity has rendered the mixes unusable, their clothes are unsuitable, and they've arrived in the middle of political upheaval as the Congolese seek to wrest independence from Belgium. In addition to poisonous snakes, dangerous animals, and the hostility of the villagers to Nathan's fiery take-no-prisoners brand of Christianity, there are also rebels in the jungle and the threat of war in the air. Could things get any worse?
In fact they can and they do. The first part of The Poisonwood Bible revolves around Nathan's intransigent, bullying personality and his effect on both his family and the village they have come to. As political instability grows in the Congo, so does the local witch doctor's animus toward the Prices, and both seem to converge with tragic consequences about halfway through the novel. From that point on, the family is dispersed and the novel follows each member's fortune across a span of more than 30 years.
The Poisonwood Bible is arguably Barbara Kingsolver's most ambitious work, and it reveals both her great strengths and her weaknesses. As Nathan Price's wife and daughters tell their stories in alternating chapters, Kingsolver does a good job of differentiating the voices. But at times they can grate--teenage Rachel's tendency towards precious malapropisms is particularly annoying (students practice their "French congregations"; Nathan's refusal to take his family home is a "tapestry of justice"). More problematic is Kingsolver's tendency to wear her politics on her sleeve; this is particularly evident in the second half of the novel, in which she uses her characters as mouthpieces to explicate the complicated and tragic history of the Belgian Congo.
Despite these weaknesses, Kingsolver's fully realized, three-dimensional characters make The Poisonwood Bible compelling, especially in the first half, when Nathan Price is still at the center of the action. And in her treatment of Africa and the Africans she is at her best, exhibiting the acute perception, moral engagement, and lyrical prose that have made her previous novels so successful. --Alix Wilber
Book Description
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it -- from garden seeds to Scripture -- is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.
This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

Blew me away!.......2007-10-09
This is one of the handful of contempory fiction books that makes it to my top 10 list. I avoided this book for a while because the premise -- a missionary family from Georgia in the Belgian Congo -- just didn't appeal to me. I don't know what compelled me to pick the book up and give it a try, but I am so happy that I did. Once I picked this novel up I could barely put it down. This family's story is fascinating, tragic, and beautiful. If you are at all on the fence about this book I highly recommend you give it a chance!
Poisonwood Bible.......2007-10-07
An excellent book that grips you from the start. As I am not religious I had a few reservations about reading it when I saw it was about missionaries, but the story is essentially about their family life in the Congo and the dangers they faced. It is written from the point of first the mother then each of her four daughters and is very skilfully done. I love this author and this is one of her best. It is entirely different from anything else she has written.
One of my favorites..........2007-10-03
The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel (P.S.)
I've read this at least half a dozen times in the last several years & ALWAYS find nuances and plot points that are new. Kingsolver provides seamless transitions between the voices of the characters while managing to hold each one accountable for her own actions and the way their impact magnifies as it ripples outward through the family and into the community. I especially enjoyed Adah's biting wit & sarcasm from the perspective of her "diagnosis" and is a character I'd really like to meet in real life.
Thank you Barbara........2007-09-27
What can I say, Barbara Kingsolver is one of my favorite writers. She's witty, inventive, and lyrical, to say the least. Just blew my mind with this one. It's amazing how every sentence is so poetic and so fascinating from start to finish. Great story. Beautifully written. A masterpiece.
Quite an Experience.......2007-09-26
After reading this book, I feel like I myself have lived in the Congo. Some parts were annoying/slow (especially the chapters narrated by Adah in the beginning), but it's worth reading the entire thing just to get the experience of raw Africa. It's been over 6 months since I've read the book, but I still think about it from time to time and look at the comforts & conveniences around me in appreciation.
This is NOT a pro-religion, evangelistical novel, so don't get turned off by that aspect of the plot. Read it for the extremely trying experience of living, nay, surviving in Africa.

Customer Reviews:
Did she read the book?.......2004-02-17
Wagner-Martin's guide to The Poisonwood Bible was a disappointment. I had read the novel and I bought Wagner-Martin's book hoping to catch points that I had missed and get a better understanding of the book. Wagner-Martin did bring out some parts of the novel that I had missed and for that I am grateful. But she also got some parts of the book absolutely wrong. Most importantly, she mis-identified the village witch doctor and the person who put a snake in the chicken house which killed the youngest daughter. The fact Wagner-Martin gets confused over the plot seriously undermines her ability to guide any reader through an absolutely wonderful novel.
Good, but not my favorite.......2003-08-14
This book is much different from previous Kingsolver books such as The Bean Trees. However, it is enjoyable and more inventive. The use of different voices is surprisingly easy to follow and gives the story multiple perspectives. The first part of the book is slow, painful, and a bit dogmatic. The father's character is so over the top, he is hard to take. But HANG ON, the second half picks up and the characters become more real.
Very informative and thought-provoking.......2001-10-23
This is a neat book! It starts out with a chapter about Barbara Kingsolver, quite chatty and very interesting. And then there is a much longer chapter about the Poisonwood Bible, which is one of my favourites. This chapter is quite deep and occasionally too 'academic', but most of it is clear and it has made me think about the book. I'm now reading the novel again, and I'm enjoying it even more. The book finishes with three short chapters about how people liked the novel when it came out, and about how it did so well. All of which is interesting in its own way, too. I'm going to read more of Kingsolver's novels now.
If you enjoy thinking about books, and seeing things that you didn't really know were there, and if you loved the Poisonwood Bible, I can recommend this book. The author did a good job!

"All about passion, whether for
.romance or adventure, this sweeping debut renders poetically the dynamics of desire."Kirkus Reviews
The year is 1900 in gold-prospecting Alaska. Essie, a Midwestern farm girl fleeing from a stormy marriage, joins up with prospectors bound for Nome, where the golden sands teem with dreamers, schemers, and high rollers. When Leonard, Essie's stubborn and volatile husband, travels north, astonishing scenes of pursuit, sacrifice, and crucial decision rise to a conclusion that is both surprising and inevitable. Powerfully evoking a past world and the variable territory of the heart, this novel establishes Peter C. Brown as a consummate storyteller. Reading group guide included.
Customer Reviews:
A fast read, but doesn't live up to its promise.......2007-09-08
I wanted to read this book for one reason and one reason only. It's set in Alaska and I just can't resist books about the frozen north. Maybe someday I'll visit that area of the world. But for now, its books that take me there.
The central character, Essie, has all the characteristics of modern historical novels: she's smart and "feisty". In this case, she's a Minnesota farm girl who marries a man who has many faults. Her husband, Leonard, has had a hard life. He has a weakness for drink which causes many hardships in the couple's lives, one of which leads to the death of their young crippled son. Essie leaves him and goes to Alaska during Gold Rush times where, naturally, she meets a strong and desirable man.
But Leonard is not to be forgotten. He travels to Alaska to find her. That's the conflict and the conclusion is inevitable.
I think the author wanted the reading public to identify with Essie. But, personally, I identified with the husband. He is a complex individual with a troubled background. I felt I understood him and where he was coming from.
As I mentioned before, I wanted to read this book because of its Alaska setting. I was a bit disappointed. I guess I've read too many books already about Alaska to make the scenes in this book memorable.
The Fugitive Wife is a fast read and I enjoyed it while I was reading it. But I know it will soon be forgotten in the dustbin of books that didn't quite live up to their promise.
A fine yarn.......2007-07-10
The best historical fiction places us in the past and lets it view it through the eyes of someone we care about. This book does that and does it well. The period and place (Alaska at the turn of the century in the middle of a gold rush) are both fascinating, and the "back story" is spare and heart-wrenching. There are many characters in here, all well-drawn, but Leonard, with his limited way of understanding the world and weakness for the jug really broke my heart. I'm not going to offer a plot synopsis because there are plenty up here, I'm just going to recommend this book.
A New Great American Story.......2006-04-30
The Fugitive Wife is a rewarding saga reminiscent in some ways of great American stories of the nineteenth century such as Moby Dick, or The Scarlet Letter. It is a story rich in historical detail, with complicated and flawed characters wrestling with passions, adversities, and moral dilemmas. The author, Peter Brown, creates vivid visual scenes for the reader and more important has a great gift for hearing and rendering his characters' unique voices. The story is principally that of Essie who bears with and then finally leaves the husband who has near ruined her life. She casts her lot with men and women forging a way in a new frontier. But the story is also about the man left behind, his anguish and the shadow it casts on the future.
One Fabulous Novel.......2006-04-09
There is so much to savor here I know I'll read THE FUGITIVE WIFE again. With the authority of careful research and the grace of a gifted storyteller, Peter Brown gives us a window to history, a love triangle, an unforgettable tale.
He parcels out the narrative, telling just enough to make the three main characters, Essie, Nate and Leonard, vivid and compelling, while holding back pieces we're both itching and afraid to know. We meet Guppy Totman, Plug Jefferson and so many other zany souls, Charles Dickens could take a lesson. Brown guides us expertly through century-old worlds of farming, trapping, chicken husbandry, mining and more. His language is rich and in tune with its time, and I stopped often to read a beautifully crafted paragraph twice, or three times.
"Abiding." Watch for this pitch-perfect, one-word sentence. The countless, lyrical phrases Brown finds to describe the sky, water, ships setting sail. Nuggets of heart-baring insight, dug deep from emotionally restrained characters. And humor. You will laugh out loud at the "five erect fingers of mortuary fortune," and more.
I'll warn you: a very creepy snake inhabits this novel. And, like the rest of THE FUGITIVE WIFE, Peter Brown brings it masterfully to life.
character is destiny.......2006-04-09
"A little curl had come into his voice like the creeper on a bittersweet." 'The Fugitive Wife' glides along on this kind of simple, elegant, and haunting prose; rich period details bring the story to life, and good old fashioned yarn-spinning (a la Ken Kesey) make it a pleasure to read. But it is the characters themselves- Nate, Essie, the gold-rush city of Nome, and above all Leonard Crummey, who make it impossible to put down. Beg, buy, or borrow this book and enjoy the ride.
