I disagree with his results........2002-06-25

Mickens names University of Chicago as one of the best work environments for gays. Let the records show that in the early 1990s, people were going around sending death threats to gay students on that campus, particularly gay students of color. I have a friend who transferred from Chicago to Brown specifically for that reason. Therefore, if Chicago does have a gay-friendly policy now, it is only because they were embarrassed into it. This book is written in a rambling personal narrative style. There are several superior books out there about gay men and lesbians in the workplace.

What a great way to make public the companies that really care about their gay employees. It's fun to see which companies are really doing something. However, this book is quite out of date, I wish a new edition was published

Since coming out as queer I have been looking for something olike this, and now I have it. One thing that hasn't happened even though there is a lot more acceptance of the gay lifestyle at the grassroots is more acceptance by institutions. This is a step in the right direction, and gives lots of good info on where to get serviced and so on.

Ed, dear fellow, I'm sorry but you have completely missed the mark this time buddy. I would agree with maybe one or two of the companies that you have written about here, but in all truth and honesty all the others have had a reputation for hate-mongering and gay-bashing, which would not constitute these companies as the best for gay men and lesbians. And one more thing... why is your title "Gay Men and Lesbians". Shouldn't it either be "Gays and Lesbians" or "Gay Men and Lesbian Women"?

Very disappointed by this book, in fact I burned it.

This book has a rather unique layout that actually makes it easier to use than most similar books. The first part of the book focuses on symptoms. You look up your primary symptom, and then look to see if there are associated symptoms that match yours. If you have a match of symptoms then you read the different possible diagnosis for those symptoms and the distinguishing features of each diagnosis. The best way to illustrate how easy it is to use an example. Suppose you see some blood in your urine. You look up "Blood in the urine" and find that there are two subdivisions - with urinary difficulty or incontinence, without urinary difficulty or incontinence. If there is no urinary difficulty or incontinence then there are five possible diagnoses provided. Each of these five provides distinguishing features so you can easily figure out if you match one of them.

The second part of the book details the disorders provided in the symptom diagnosis portion. So, if you determined that you probably have an esophageal stricture you can look that disorder up and find out what it is, what causes it, prevention strategies, diagnostic techniques, how to treat it, and most importantly, when to call a doctor. With clear writing and lavish illustrations it provides a clear understanding of the problem. The John Hopkins Complete Home Guide to Symptoms & Remedies is a very highly recommended book to have handy in every home.

This book is a good reference for looking up symtoms but one shouldn't use it as their only source for information regarding the remedies. I must disagree that using a wrist-support while typing should be used to prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). All that will do is simply prolong and worsen the condition. In summary, by restricting the movement of the wrist while typing you are allowing muscles in a small area to be overused one way while allowing other muscles to relax.

The book is divided into two sections: symtoms and disorders. The first half of the book on symtoms is a three column table of Associated Symtoms, Possible Diagnosis and Distinguishing Features. The second and last half of the book on disorders gives overviews on each disorder. The information is far from replete but does a good job at summarizing the disorders into relatively simple terms.

An excellent health resource for the over 50s.......2002-10-17

The reviewers who posted negative reviews seemed to have missed the point of this book, that it is SPECIALLY WRITTEN and DESIGNED FOR people OVER 50. So common ailments are not going to be in this book; I would recommend The Complete Home Wellness Handbook for the reader under 50. For people over the age of 50, or people who are acting as caregivers for people over 50, this is a terrific book everyone should have in the house.

Disappointed.......2002-06-28

I have had the AMA Encylclopedia of Medicine for about 10 years now, and love how it combines detailed explanations with pictures. However, that book is getting old and I can't find evidence that they have revised/updated it. So I was looking for a replacement for that AMA book, when I tried the John Hopkins book here. As one of the other reviewers stated, I was disappointed with the lists of possible syndromes accounted for by various symptoms. Some very common maladies were missing! My husband and I have some of the more ordinary, run of the mill maladies, and only about half were listed! I am returning the book and looking more closely at the reviews and descriptions before I choose another book. I want a book that covers more syndromes, has better pictures (this one has very few), and is written for the educated reader (like the AMA encyclopedia was). This was a case where I bought the book by name brand (John Hopkins) without looking more carefully into what I was getting. I was disappointed.

Excellent learning tool.......2006-03-14

This book begins with easy stories, mostly in present tense. It progresses to more difficult stories. The stories are by Latino authors, so you have the additional bonus of Latino culture with the stories. The back of the book gives brief information about the authors. It includes exercises, some to be answered orally and others written, and a Spanish glossary. It's a good tool to have in your "bag of tricks" for learning and improving your Spanish.

Challenging!.......2006-03-13

Not quite as simple as I'd anticipated before purchase. If you are a beginner this would be a good book to help practise pronounciation - if you have someone around to correct you. As an intermediate learner this book is quite challenging especially since you translate the Spanish 'literally' and the English version is a proper translation, so after that initial shock it's quite good reading. However, you also have to get over the idiomatic expressions. The stories are quite good otherwise and make a great read in English if the Spanish is too difficult.

Definitely not a beginners book. Probably comes in at the intermediate level & above. Assumes you know the complete verb system...the stories throw pretty much everything at you in terms of sentence construction. The more advanced you are, the less you need to depend on the English translation and just read the stories in Spanish, which even by themselves are treasures (I. Allende, G. Garcia Marquez, C. Fuentes among the estimable authors included).

The translations are a joy to read, because you notice right away that there's not this word-for-word transliteration that you get with many attempts at parallel texts. The translators (each credited in their own right) really try to bring across in English the feeling and emotion that the writer intended when they penned the original Spanish. It's eye-opening. On top of that, the book's editor John R. King has added about 20 - 30 or so footnotes per story that really take your understanding to a new level. A great example: in the first story, he adds a footnote to denote when the two characters in the story slip from using formal verb construction into informal. It would have slid right by me, had it not been for the footnote. And it does mark a definite change in the direction of the story.

Short Stories in Spanish improves ones language skills through enjoyable stories and excellent linguistic explanations. These stories come from many different spanish speaking countries, which allows the student to be exposed to different style and slang. Not only are the stories translated correctly, but certain words, names, and phases are explained in depth relating to culture or history. Furthermore, the difficulty of this book is from advanced beginner to expert.

Great Book, Lousy Audio.......2006-07-21

I loved this book when it first came out, so when I was looking for an audiobook for a long trip, I got this one. Unfortunately I found the narrator spoke so slowly and in such a monotone that he almost put me to sleep. Rather than attempting different voices for the characters, he simply raised and lowered his voice. I found some of his "characterizations" so affected sounding, that I had to put the book away. As he also narrates the next book in the Quinn saga, I guess I won't be listening to this series in the future. I would give the book 5 stars, but took away 2 for the lousy audio version

I have read Nora roberts before but not many and those earlier that i have read hasn't impressed me much because of that i read her books rarely, only when i am recommended any book like this one.i am so glad i picked this one because this was great!
The best part about this book was how these four guys handle living together which was not very well but very funny indeed! Their fights especially Cam's and Philip's were hilarious. I liked Philips very much, can't wait to read 'inner Harbour' now that contains his story but i guess i would go by the series and read 'rising tides' first.
How these two men handle a ten year old boy was very touching. You just can not treat a ten year old as a kid and these men never did. They somehow knew how being treated like a kid at Seth's age felt. they treated him as their equal and when he needed to be reminded of his age they did tell him,'You are only ten, get real!'.
I could feel Seth's insecurites and doubts and felt like crying myself when he cried overwhelmed by emotions when he saw these three men standing up for him. this was a emotional tale but it never got mushy. Even the romance never got too sweet which was a good thing because i know how you get bored always reading those mushy scenes in romance novels.
Anna was great! She was gorgeous and straight forward and never tried to hide her attraction toward Cam, never played games and never acted shy, in short she was every guys dream woman.
This is first trilogy i have read from Nora roberts and i am impressed and i will be going for more soon.
