      Book Description

"The key questions for today's managers and leaders, " writes Jack Hawley, "are no longer issues of task and structure, but questions of spirit....not religion, spirit." We all yearn for spiritually rooted qualities at work - integrity, character, inspiration, belief, and even reverence - qualities that are key factors in an enterprise's success. Hawley provides a direct response to the widespread desire for spirituality at work, offering a practical vision of work permeated with "dharma" - deep integrity fusing spirit, character, human values, and decency. He shows how successful leaders or managers who are motivated by a spiritual vision liberate the best in people, and explains why all leadership is spiritual. He provides many examples of people actually living by their inner truth at work, and shows how such people can create an improved place to work and a better life as well as a more resilient, effective organization that is prepared to meet the challenges of the present and future.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE LOVE LOVE .......2005-05-09

"All Leadership is Spiritual," says Jack Hawley. Though that concept sounds sweeping, reading through the book the reader evolves the thought that the concept was not alien after all. The book takes the reader through elements that leadership and spirituality in such a manner that the reader keeps wondering, `Why didn't this thought occurred in my mind earlier?' Probably, that is what makes this book wonderful.

The book introduces the concept of Spirit with the quote of Joseph Campbell by stating "There is a dimension of the universe unavailable to the senses". The book expresses Spirit as the Vitality/ Aliveness that dwells and also refers to Spirit as the source of energy within us and a part of us. As promised, the book goes beyond the theories of abstractness, and thus tries to explain the spirit of Spirit through the words of an IBM employee, who lives the spirit of the famed IBM Service standards and thus tries to communicate what spirit is about.

The book is laden with powerful anecdotes and stories, which, in addition to opening wonderful vistas of thoughts, brings to us memories when we were "spiritual", but never realized. From Alexander the Great's march into the Kulu valley in North Western India to a lovey-dovey incident between two small kids during a birthday party, these selected incidents do help the reader to stand aside, be a witness and then to merge in the nectar of Love. The reader will be able to find a number of autobiographical elements in the pages of the book, as the author has been successful in connecting with the deep yearnings of an individual. This connection that the author develops with a reader helps the reader to engross his attention to the book.

The book is divided into five sections. The first section is about Reawakening to Spirit in Management and Life, followed by the section that deals with Love and Reverence in Work and Life. The third section deals with realigning beliefs, thoughts and being, while the fourth section deals with strengthening personal and organizational integrity. The final section is about spiritual core of leadership. The book deals with various facets of a Leader like Leader as a Servant, Leader as a Steward, Leader as a Sense Maker, Leader as a Guide, Leader as a Yogi and yes, Leader as a Warrior too. The author travels 6000 years back to narrate a conversation between the warrior supremo Bhishma, who is on his deathbed, and Prince Yudhishtira, at the end of the fierce battle in Kurukshetra. The author soon takes the reader from this historical incident to the modern day business wonder of Hard Rock Café, an acclaimed chain of restaurants and its founder, Isaac Tigrett, who bought in "Spirit" and "Love" to his workplace, before leaving the company.

The book speaks about the `Reverence Continuum' in organizations, a model which raised eyebrows and quizzical looks when the author was introducing the model as part of a management development programme. The book while acknowledging the existence of organizations that are indifferent and apathetic, focuses its attention on those organizations that are "basically civilized". The reverence continuum thus moves from a Polite organization to a Caring organization. As per the book, increased levels of Caring take an organization from the state of Caring, to the state of Respect. Soon, increased levels of Respect, takes an organization, to the state of Reverence. The author says, "I know reverence sound far out, but think back to the best boss you've ever worked for or the best team you've ever worked on or the best subordinates you've ever worked with. Tell me; was there reverence in that situation?" Answering the question for ourselves will help us to question whether Reverence is so far-off after all.

The book also follows a movement when it speaks about Love (the "L-Word" as the author mentions it), which the author feels is a crucial idea that business people, scientists, doctors, teachers etc are reluctant to acknowledge. While reverence continuum was two dimensional, the books gets into a three dimensional mode when it speaks about the landscapes of Love. As per author, Love at its first parcel is the Ocean of Desire, a choppy gray-green sea. Following the mission arising from the Heart, an individual leaves the sea and soars over a Rich, Grassy Plain, an area where Love finds its expression as a cluster of emotions, thoughts and attitudes. Continuing with the Heart mission, one leaves the plains and reaches the Action Hills, where Love is the daily acts of Love that living beings perform. Soon the Action Hills are transcended, and the Selfless Mountains of giving are sighted, a landscape which can be equated to the overwhelming love that puppies and little children shower on each other. The Mountains slowly moves away to High Peaks, a landscape which is a magical mixture of "clarity and mist". Love here becomes pure energy. "Love here is the high inner knowing that we are one with all others" Bursting away from the Peaks, one soars into a Vast Quiet, a "landscape" of fearlessness, just Beingness.

This book which was published almost a decade back, in 1993, and hence well before the scandals that rocked the corporate world, gives clear indications to the erosion of character in the field of business, but does not venture to paint the business world black and dull. On the contrary, the author speaks about the growing influence the field of business and business books have in the life of everyone. The author utilizes the first available chance to mention that the book is a "spiritual adventure" and not a religious book. Going beyond the defined boundaries of religion, it looks into things you and me are concerned about, like security, purpose and meaning in life, love, peace, death etc. The book steers away from the "the ozone of theory," and thus looks into pragmatic ways of dealing with the reality of work place. Though the word "Dharma" in the title catches attention and brings in an oriental flavor to the book, the book rarely uses words from Oriental languages. Hawley expresses himself in a language which is simple, and affectionate.

          Book Description

Medical practitioners of the sixteenth century had their own body of special terms, just like the doctors of this century. McConchie examines medical terminology used in a selection of thirteen medical works published between 1547 and 1612, and compares it with treatment of these words in the Oxford English Dictionary and other dictionaries of today, showing how well - or ill - the specialist terminology of sixteenth-century medical practitioners has been recorded. He compiles a corpus of new data from a selection of medical texts ranging from scholarly tomes to homely handbooks. The study of this corpus reveals errors, omissions, and biases which raise questions for lexicographical tools in general. Are existing dictionaries adequate in their investigation of Renaissance English? Has current understanding been more biased and more deficient than we thought? If so, how are we to redress the problem? This book uses a specialist semantic domain to raise important issues for lexicographers, and historians of early modern English and medicine.

              Book Description

Part One is a history of the pioneers in the field of stellar rotation: the attempted solutions, and the small and large steps forward that comprise the backdrop from which the book proceeds. The various sources of differential rotation are discussed in Part Two, the book's main section, which deals with the turbulent transport of energy and angular momentum. In Part three, the previously used formulations are verified with a simple linearized turbulence theory, and the turbulence model best describing the solar convection zone is discussed. Through formulae and analyses, Differential Rotation and Stellar Convection effectively analyzes the reasons why the sun rotates as it does.

                      Book Description

Understanding how stars rotate is central to modeling their structure, formation and evolution, as well as understanding how they interact with their environment and companion stars. This lucid introduction to stellar rotation combines theory and observation, and includes all the latest developments in the field. Jean-Louis Tassoul, a leading authority on the subject, comprehensively surveys how the rotation of stars affects the structure and evolution of the Sun, single stars, and close binaries. This volume will greatly interest graduate students and researchers studying solar and stellar rotation and close binary systems. It will also appeal to those with a more general interest in solar and stellar physics, star formation, binary stars, and the hydrodynamics of rotating fluids--including geophysicists, planetary scientists, and plasma physicists.

Human Evolution synthesizes the major findings of modern research and theory and presents a complete and integrated account of the evolution of human beings. New developments in microbiology and recent fossil records are incorporated into the enormous range of this volume, with the resulting text as lucid and comprehensive as earlier editions. The fourth edition retains the thematic structure and organization of the third, with its cogent treatment of human variability and speciation, primate locomotion, and nonverbal communication and the evolution of language, supported by more than 150 detailed illustrations and an expanded and updated glossary and bibliography.

The author, Bernard G. Campbell writes "In writing this book I have attempted to gather under the title of Human Evolution a range of matter not normally included in texts of this kind. My object has been to try to expand our view of evolving man from skeletal and dental transformations to something more complete. While I have clearly fallen far short of describing the whole man, I have made a move to stretch the subject into one which requires knowledge of many different fields of biology. Though there are many gaps, I have attempt to define what I consider the proper study of human evolution...My aim has been to make the book intelligible to readers with no previous knowledge of biology, but they will need a real interest to carry them through a text as dense as this. For those who are more advance I have added references as well as reading lists so that they may pursue topics that may interest them. if the references appears thin in places, it is a reflection of the small number of papers that follow myth own approach and interest..."

                                                      Book Description

John Mortimer is best known for his stories about the lovable and disheveled barrister Horace Rumpole, the “great defender of muddled and sinful humanity.” But he is also an accomplished memoirist, screenwriter, librettist, playwright, and former barrister. Now, at the age of eighty-one, he wonders what he should pass on to the next generation. In Where There's a Will, Mortimer ponders this question and writes about the (nonmaterial) things he believes enrich our experience of life. From the pleasures of drink and outdoor sex (though not necessarily together) to the justification of the odd lie and a vision of God as the Grand Perhaps, Where There's a Will is Mortimer's witty and wise, occasionally outrageous, and always thought-provoking examination of what it means to truly live and live well.

                                                      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Stick to Rumpole .......2007-10-04

Mortimer writes Rumpole, who is a delight. This is the third (I think) in Mortimer's memoirs, and I missed its predecessors so this review may do Mr. Mortimer a disservice. There is a big of bragging, some interesting notes, but it a fairly forgettable series of life lessons, barely disguised as things of leave behind one that do not fit in a Will. It is a sad truth that there are a number of writers whose characters are more interesting, and charming, than their authors.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant, wise, and humorously self-effacing.......2006-08-08

I should first confess my bias--I have often been tickled and sometimes awed by Mortimer's way with English prose for 20 years. So, in picking up this book I had the high expectations one might have before meeting an old friend or beloved teacher. No disappointment. Even if some of these essays are slightly less effervescent than others, all are at least wonderful, and several are both brilliant and touching.

Mortimer has given us a collection of short essays, conversational and often wryly funny, which he intends as a kind of spiritual bequeathal to his family and other heirs. The chapters range across a broad range of subjects, some perhaps outwardly frivolous, like the cooking of eggs. But in the main, Mortimer touches on matters of great substance--the nature of beauty, how to be happy, surprising ways in which our world has managed to be unjust, places and times for sex, how to dine sociably, the love of children, faith and reason, the terrors of the writer facing blank paper, and many more. I found these essays to be wise and absolutely delicious. I suspect that readers who have enjoyed Rumpole, or Mortimer's other biographical essays like Summer of a Doormouse, or Clinging to the Wreckage, will be quite pleased with these sketches.

Mortimer may, sadly, be nearing the end of his life, but at present he seems to be on a literary tear. I, for one, wish him many more prolific years.

Sir John Mortimer is an extremely literate and honestly open-minded person who writes with a flowing exquisiteness of the English language. This small book of his thoughts on a good life is a reminiscence of the life he has led and is still leading. He mentions a lot of classical literary authors and their characters that would further enrich a person's knowledge. Also, the various types of people he met working at the Old Bailey has surely enhanced his art of observing and putting their perspectives onto paper. Together with wild imaginations of his, no wonder his many writings are keenly absorbed by the public. The last ten chapters are my favorite but in each I find something to laugh out loud about. This is his own story and the way he tells it is invigorating. In not so many words in each section, he still succeeds in relaying his message that is predominantly deliberate.

These are the random musings of an old man contemplating his mortality. After a writing career in which he had twenty novels published, in addition to fourteen stories featuring the fictional barrister, Horace Rumpole, and twelve plays as listed in this small book of ramblings about his life, I learned that he was actually a barrister himself at the Old Bailey. He was born five years after the end of the 1914-18 war, he says, and enjoyed and endured a 'public school' education where one of his school mates was Lord Byron. He calls Byron's DON JUAN one of the great masterpieces of European literature.

Sir John Mortimer (knighted in 1998) led a privileged life from the very beginning. Now, at age 81, he looks round at his children and grandchildren whose ages range from 53 to twelve, he contemplates: "Their words will echo out into the future, with their children and their children's children." What to leave them as his paternal legacy? That is what he ponders as he tells about life as it was for him at the various stages.

He wonders what to pass on to the next generation. So, he gives some ancient history concerning the birthplace of out civilization, in olden times called Mesopotamia in the Persian Empire. He talks about the times he spent enjoying one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Hanging Gardens. Then he goes on to tell about the city of peace (back then) in the time of Charlemagne, in the Ottoman Empire. "When Turkey was defeated in the 1914-18 war, the Allies carved up its possessions with quite arbitrary boundaries and placed an arbitrary king, Feisal, on the throne of Iraq. These kings ruled until a revolution led by the Baath party finally produced Saddam Hussein who was, of course, backed by America. Algebra was invented there at the center of civilization which conquered the whole of Spain."

His opinions on lots of things included this remark about democracy: "I suppose democracy was most nearly achieved in ancient Greece, when everyone except women and slaves took part in the government. The result was usually disastrous and led to the death of Socrates just as the introduction of democracy in England was started." Utopia, information technology as the cause of deterioration and decline of the English language "at least as its's spoken by the governing classes", family values and vulgarity, telling lies (the bigger, the better), Shakespeare, and old movies are just some of the topics he knows so much about. This is his postscript (P.S.) to his autobiographies, as he reflects on his good and prosperous life.

I am afraid I was quite disappointed in this book. The review in the Times that I had read made it sound like a much more profound and important book - one I would like to own rather than just take out of the library. I had previously enjoyed other books by John Mortimer, but this book was just a collection of random musings which did not hold together at all.

                                                      Book Description

Winner of the American Bar Association's 1992 Silver Gavel Award "in recognition of an outstanding contribution to public understanding of the American system of law and justice."

"Mr. Sobol has produced a readable yet fully researched and detailed study of the operation of the bankruptcy and its effects upon all concerned—the women who were injured, the swarms of lawyers who represented parties in the bankruptcy, and the court which oversaw the bankruptcy in Richmond. . . . This book adds greatly to the current debate about how strong a managerial federal judge our system should have."—Paul D. Rheingold, New York Law Journal

"Bending the Law is polemical and relentless. It is also minutely researched, fluidly written, and persuasive."—Paul Reidinger, ABA Journal

"Bending the Law is a must read for bankruptcy practitioners, and for anyone else concerned about the use of bankruptcy law to deal with mass torts. Although its author is a civil rights lawyer, he details the subtle art of practicing bankruptcy law with a discerning eye, and is a gifted storyteller as well."—Joryn Jenkins, Federal Bar News and Journal

"This is an accessible history of the case by a veteran civil-rights lawyer."—Washington Post Book World

Unfortunately, I found it more dry then exciting. It helps to have a working knowledge of bankruptcy cases, but with this case so immense, the cast of characters grew so large and confusing I had to take notes to keep them straight. Probably the best resource out there that deals with the fallout of the Dalkon Shield case, but be forewarned, I emitted a cheer when I was finally through this.

4 out of 5 stars How judges work the law.......2000-08-30

The book is concerned with a number of tortious claims for punitive damages brought against the A H Robins Company for its reckless marketing of a contraceptive device called the Dalkon Shield. As juries across the United states begin to award huge punitive damages against the pharmaceutical company it becomes obvious that the survival of the company depends upon the outcome of the litigation.

At this stage enter the figure of federal District Judge Robert Merhige - someone who would be called a strong judge by any standards. Merhige manages the consolidation of outstanding cases before him in his court in Richmond, Virginia and, when the A H Robins Company seeks protection behind Chapter 11 bankruptcy, also manages the bankruptcy.

The book is a real eye-opener as to what happens when a strong judge takes a certain view of a case. Merhige is determined to achieve a particular outcome and the combined efforts of the best plaintiffs' tort lawyers in the US are unable to prevent him having his way. Merhige has a hide like that of a rhinoceros - his skill and ingenuity enable his controversial actions, which many thought outrageous, to survive all attempts to box him into a corner or get his decisions overturned on appeal.

His opponents claimed that Merhige should have declined to hear the case on the grounds that he had a clear conflict of interest. The president of AH Robins Company was his near neighbour and the company was the largest employer in Richmond, VA - Merhige's home town. If the Robins Company went out of business there would have been mass unemployment in Richmond. Merhige, however, denied all claims of bias and blandly argued that every action he took was in the interest of the plaintiffs.

The book provides a fascinating look at how the workings of corporate interests and the legal system combined to override the rights of victims. It's a book to make a feminist's blood boil!
