An excellent framework for creating returning RA courses.......1999-05-25

The book covers many topics pertinent to returning resident assistants. Most universities offer staff training at the beginning of each term and some also offer a course. This book can be a tool in creating in-services and also in the creation of a seperate course for returning RA's. The issues are quite salient and the case studies and scenerio's can provide for meaningful discussions.

Hi,
I read "The history of love" first and now Man Walks Into a room and I have to say that Nicole Krauss did it wonderfully the two times telling a story so moving.
The book, along with the exciting and moving, human feeling while reading it, keeps you in with incites and thoughts of the book for a long time.

Certainly, one of the best I read so far, recommended warmly.

This is easily the worst book I have read in years.While the basic idea had me intrigued I found the book had no structure,wandered all over the place with a class of useless people.I persevered but had to give up when our hero met a girl on a bus ;she gave him her Bible and he gave her his Camera.

Nicole Krauss can write and Man Walks Into a Room starts very well, exploring what happens when a man loses his memory as a consequence of a brain tumor. The first half is beautiful and captivating but Krauss, in my opinion, made a terrible mistake by choosing a very strange path in the second half. I don't want to give too much away, but the whole experiment set up felt fake, unrealistic and, more importantly, ridiculous and boring.

This is the story of Samson, who in his mid-thirties suffers from a tumor in his brain and is found wondering in the desert, not knowing who he is and having lost memory of the last 24 years of his life. The story follows him as he struggles with readjusting to his old life that no longer fits the man he has become, and as he searches for a deeper meaning to what has happened to him. This is a very original story. Nicole Krauss is an obviously talented author and she tackles this subject wonderfully, with just the right balance of sciencitific facts, emotions, reflections on memory, life, the past and future. Excellent and highly recommended.

slightly lacking.......2006-04-14

I read a story of hers not too long ago called "future emergencies" and I came into this book really looking forward to it. It was a good book it just wasn't the kind of book I would tell everyone I know to read. It was lacking something. This novel just didn't grip me and by the time I was done I didn't really want more.

I loved that short story.

Hood Novel Fans Can Rejoice... until page 59........2007-08-05

This book is great until the 1st short story is over. I read it within an hour and I found my self wishing I had the full Novel of "Big Daddy". Regardless of the circumstances regarding the main character of the 1st story, this was a well executed true to form hood tale. Although some may say this novel can be too graphic at times, I would think only an idiot would pick up such a novel and expect roses and glitter. It's raunchy, raw, unadulterated, and at times exceptional, especially considering the low-rent hood books more commonly available. I would definately read if the "Hood" book genre appeals to you... and please, give Big Daddy a chance.... her story is moving nonetheless.

1ST STORY: D OR AS SHE LIKES TO BE CALLED, BIG DADDY IS A PIMP, A BROKE PIMP, A DIKE THAT BELIEVES SHE IS A MAN. WHO PIMPS THIS GIRL NAMED NESSA. WELL NESSA GETS LOCKED UP, OR SO SHE CLAIMS, AND WHILE SHE'S MIA(MISSING IN ACTION), D MEETS LIL MO, A DRUG DEALER WHO'S ON TOP CHICK, WHILE THEY START KICKING IT HARD, BEING TOGETHER, THINGS TAKE A WILD TURN THE ENDING OF THIS STORY WILL HAVE YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT!

2ND STORY: COJACK AND MANIC, BEEN FRIENDS SINCE 4EVER. THEY BOTH SOME DRUG DEALERS ON TOP. COJACK KICKS IT W ROBBIN, WHO LIKES TO SNORT EVER ONCE IN A WHILE. WELL, SHE GETS COJACK TO START AND HE FALLS OFF HIS GAME. AFTER THAT THE STORY GOES GOR THE WORSE, AND THE BEST.

3RD STORY: MALIK, DUJUANNA AND FURQUAN ROB MALIK'S COUSIN WHO USED TO BE A TOP DRUG DEALER. WELL THE ROBBERY GOES WRONG AND MALIK'S COUSIN, HIS WIFE AND HIS OLDERST SON ARE KILLED. THE LAST ONE SURVIVED IS ANTWAN, WHO WAS 2 AT THE TIME. AS TIME GOES ON ANTWAN WANTS PAYBACK, BUT WHEN HE GETS HIS PAYBACK WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO HIM. THIS ONE WAS SOOOOOOOO GOOD!

4TH STORY:CASEY AND DODOTRY TO GO AFTER THESE TO GUYS, WHO BEAT UP CASEY'S LIL BROTHER DANNY MAN. WELL, THROUGH CASEY BEING HIGH AS HE DRIVES THEY GET INTO A BAD CAR ACCIDENT. DODO IS THE ONE LEFT IN THE CAR. HE DOES 14 YRS AND COMES HOME. DANNY MAN IS NOW DM AND CASEY IS A STRUNG OUT ADDICT. DODO AND DM GO TOE-TO-TOE WITH EACHOTHER. WHO WILL BE THE LAST ONE STANDING?!?!

There's No Place Like Da Hood .......2006-07-04

Street Chronicles, Tales From Da Hood, is a compilation of five stories by Seven, The Ghost, Akbar Pray, Y Blak Moore, and Niki Turner. The book starts off with Big Daddy, a lesbian pimp who receives her just desserts by the story's end. Second, the reader is introduced to Cojack, a drug-dealer, who finds the good life is not as good it appears when he experiences double-dealing and addiction on a personal level. The third story is the story of a young man who seeks revenge on the people that killed his family when he was a toddler. The fourth story involves a cowardly young boy who grows up to be a drug dealer. Problem is...once a coward always a coward. The final story delves into the life of Angel, a journalist by day and gangsta's girlfriend by night.

I found each story to be raw, real and a page turner from the start. Usually when several authors embark on a project of this sort there is at least one weak link in the chain. To my surprise, Tales From Da Hood was an exception. Even if you are not one for street lit, Tales From Da Hood will hold your interest as this collection is well-written with some real life lessons attached to each story.

If you are looking for a fun and entertaining read, Tales From Da Hood
will not disappoint.

This was a ok read to me. I'am a Nikki Turner fan so of course I enjoyed her chapter :0) Now, Everyone else's left me saying : ok ok not bad once I was done reading them, but, Y. Blak's and Seven's were the one's I truly enjoyed. Those two stories were page turners! I reccomend this read ONLY if you are a fan of one of these author's as an add to your collection.
