          Book Description

This book deals comprehensively with the elements of cost accounting, their application to costing methods, and their significance for management through budgetary control, short term decision-making, and capital budgeting. It is an extensive revision of the author’s well-known costing text, and provides the student with a complete introduction to cost accounting.

Relevant exercises are included at the end of each chapter, with solutions at the end of the book. These include many from recent examinations of the major professional accountancy bodies. Teachers are thus able to use their own favourite examples in lecture or class, and to refer students to other exercises for further practice. Students who are unable to attend a regular course will be able to check their work against the solutions. A series of multiple choice questions throughout the book provides a further opportunity for the student to check personal progress.

Other features of the book include: a complete introduction to cost accounting; new material on capital budgeting and cost accounting for service activities; an explanation of budgetary control including behavioural aspects; and graded questions and MCQs throughout (definitions follow CIMA terminology).

Hey, wait a minute--AMACOM is a business book publisher! This sounds likes something from a parenting guide.

Exactly. In fact the whole idea behind PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY MANAGEMENT is that being a good manager requires many of the same skills and qualities associated with being a good parent. In the words of the authors (and they should know--they're the proud parents of six children!), "More often than not, if we carefully listen and watch children at home--think about what they do and how we bring them up--we can greatly improve our chances of being successful in leading adults in the workplace."

Does this mean managers should treat employees like unruly rugrats or act overbearingly parental? Not at all. It simply means employees (like kids) benefit from more personal involvement, caring, understanding, and attention.

Using stories from their own lives as parents, the authors demonstrate the important management lessons to be gleaned from parenting--and give readers tips for applying the lessons to the workplace. Whimsical, touching, and heart-warming, but also practical, insightful, and direct, PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY MANAGEMENT offers a fresh, unusual approach to leadership. Maybe father (or mother) really does know best.

                      1 out of 5 stars Un True.......2005-09-24

I felt this book was based on a hypothetical family. Just did not seem real.

                      4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-03-15

Chris and Reina Komisarjevsky illustrate effective management techniques using examples based on their toughest leadership experience: raising nine children. They delineate the skills that help children learn how to set goals, share objectives, communicate more effectively, and get along. Each chapter begins with a story about an experience with one of their children, such as buying ice cream or playing sandlot baseball. The stories illustrate management principles and guidelines. These precepts are very familiar, though linking them to child rearing is novel. Thus, the book serves as a nice, short recap of commonly known management and leadership principles, though we at getAbstract suspect that its treatment of the subject matter will probably be of more interest to managers who are parents as well.

                      1 out of 5 stars A Childish Management Book.......2000-09-28

A marketing high-concept for sure but I found the dynamics of an upsized family irrelevant to downsized corporate structures in this prime example of vanity press.

5 out of 5 stars Wisdom That Sticks to the Roof of Your Mouth.......2000-04-30

The Komisarjevskys have struck a harmonious chord with this little book! The stories of their children are immediately engaging and natural springboards for discussing effective management practices. They teach us with heartwarming sincerity that our children can be wonderful teachers, and that we can become more effective managers, employers, employees and parents by heeding what they have to teach and applying the lessons to our work environments. The authors show that our home lives and its values are really a "precious center" that help us bear the surrounding weight of the world. These lessons lead us to find a better sense of balance between home and work responsibilities, something we are all striving for these days!

This book allows us not just a glimpse into a successful CEO's way of thinking, but a sustained excursion into his practical philosophy of life, which includes working with his wife, Reina, in their teamwork approach to family life.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2000-04-28

Peanut Butter and Jelly Management is an important and excellent book. Easy to read, it is written by Chris and Reina from real life stories. All of us, drawing on our own experiences, can effectively structure our lives on a daily basis.

                          Book Description

This book is a compilation of "The IGM/Galaxy Connection" conference proceedings and begins by examining the census of baryons in the local universe as a function of the states in which they reside (e.g., galaxies, the Lgammaalpha forest, and the hot intra-group gas) and how each of these components evolves with redshift.

Galaxy formation funnels material into galaxies from the IGM through the galactic halo interface, while internal processes in the galaxies feed material back into the IGM. This book characterizes the halos around galaxies, and discusses the relics of the galaxy formation process from a theoretical perspective, followed by observational and theoretical analysis of the feedback mechanisms.

The cosmic web describes the structure of the mass distribution. It consists of a network of filaments that are detected in absorption line studies as the IGM and of groups/clusters of galaxies which form where the filaments intersect. The final section of the book provides an overview of the cosmic web, including the relationship between the IGM and galaxies in the overdense regions of galaxy groups and clusters.

This book is of interest to astronomers and graduate students studying the census of baryons in the local universe, the intergalactic medium, galaxy halos, galaxy formation and evolution, and large scale structure.

                            Book Description

In the eighteenth century, chemistry was transformed from an art to a public science. Chemical affinity played an important role in this process as a metaphor, a theory domain, and a subject of investigation. Goethe's Elective Affinities, which was based on the current understanding of chemical affinities, attests to chemistry's presence in the public imagination. In Affinity, That Elusive Dream, Mi Gyung Kim restores chemical affinity to its proper place in historiography and in Enlightenment public culture.

The Chemical Revolution is usually associated with Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier, who introduced a modern nomenclature and a definitive text. Kim argues that chemical affinity was erased from historical memory by Lavoisier's omission of it from his textbook. She examines the work of many less famous French chemists (including physicians, apothecaries, metallurgists, philosophical chemists, and industrial chemists) to explore the institutional context of chemical instruction and research, the social stratification that shaped theoretical discourse, and the crucial shifts in analytic methods. Apothecaries and metallurgists, she shows, shaped the main theory domains through their innovative approach to analysis. Academicians and philosophical chemists brought about two transformative theoretical moments through their efforts to create a rational discourse of chemistry in tune with the reigning natural philosophy.

The topics discussed include the corpuscular (Cartesian) model in French chemistry in the early 1700s, the stabilization of the theory domains of composition and affinity, the reconstruction of French theoretical discourse in the middle of the eighteenth century, the Newtonian languages that plagued the domain of affinity just before the Chemical Revolution, Guyton de Morveau's program of affinity chemistry, Lavoisier's reconstruction of the theory domains of chemistry, and Berthollet's path as an affinity chemist.

Returning from a Kenyan safari in 1932, Ernest Hemingway quickly devised a literary trophy to add to his stash of buffalo hides and rhino horns. To this day, Green Hills of Africa seems an almost perverse paean to the thrills of bloodshed, in which the author cuts one notch after another in his gun barrel and declares, "I did not mind killing anything." Four years later, however, Hemingway came up with a more accomplished spin on his African experiences--a pair of them, in fact, which he collected with eight other tales in The Snows of Kilimanjaro. The title story is a meditation on corruption and mortality, two subjects that were already beginning to preoccupy the 37-year-old author. As the protagonist perishes of gangrene out in the bush, he recognizes his own failure of nerve as a writer:
Now he would never write the things that he had saved to write until he knew enough to write them well. Well, he would not have to fail at trying to write them either. Maybe you could never write them, and that was why you put them off and delayed the starting. Well he would never know, now.
In the story, at least, the hero gets some points for stoic acceptance, as well as an epiphanic vision of Kilimanjaro's summit, "wide as all the world, great, high, and unbelievably white in the sun." (The movie version is another matter: Gregory Peck makes it back to the hospital, loses a leg, and is a better person for it.) But Hemingway's other great white hunter, in "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," is granted a less dignified exit. This time the issue is cowardice, another of Papa's bugaboos: poor Francis is too wimpy to face down a wounded lion, let alone satisfy his treacherous wife in bed. Yet he does manage a last-minute triumph before dying--an absolute assertion of courage--which makes the title a hair less ironic than it initially seems. No wonder these are two of the highest-caliber (so to speak) tales in the Hemingway canon. --Bob Brandeis

This is a good collection of some of Hemmingway's short stories. They are all brilliant. It is Hemmingway though so you wouldn't expect any less. Excellent reading.

There are two exceptional stories in this volume: The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Short Happy Life of Francis Mccomber. Both of these stories satisfied my need for other places and experiences while exploring the familiar ground of long term, mildly satisfactory relationships. The other stories are hit and miss, but still they are Hemingway's and so, if you like his work as I do, they hit the mark more often than they fall short.

If, ever, you have wanted to travel along with Papa (Hemingway) along his many travels and adventures, this collection of stories is the ideal way to rest your soles in his footsteps.

"Kilimanjaro" in particular, transports you to a bygone era of safaris not with telephoto lenses, but with long rifle barrels. Primarily, though, it is an introspective look at one's life and the worth that one ascribes to his experiences while he is ready to close his eyes for the final time.

Hemingway captures the moment when a dying man's recollections either turn into regrets or points of pride and self actualization.

I read this book many, many years ago and it is still fresh in my mind. Hemingway is an essential writer. If you haven't read this book, you should do so as soon as possible.

I am usually not a short story aficionado, but I love Ernest Hemingway, so I had to read these. Also, Hemingway thought that his story "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" was about as good as anything he had written. And he, of course was right. This story on its own has about everything anyone could ask for when reading a tale. The emotions and character portrayal are remarkable considering that Hemingway put them within the confines of a short story. The best thing about anything that Hemingway writes though is that his stories are based on his actual experiences. And his "bare bones" method of storytelling cuts through everything and gets right to the meat of any of his issues. The stories in this collection are a bit graphic because there are quite a few about big game hunting and also about rum running in the gulf between Cuba and Florida, but they are each masterpieces in their own right. I for one want to read everything Hemingway ever wrote. To my way of thinking he is one of the best English-speaking writers we have ever had.

I am a big fan of Splinter Cell. I have all the xbox games, so I decided to buy the books to see if there were any differences. I think I love the book just as much as I do the games.
So if you are a Splinter Cell fan, I highly recommend reading the books too. They will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page.

I have played all of the Splinter Cell video games and I enjoy the series very much. I bought the third book, Checkmate, in an airport with fairly low expectations. It was well written enough, particularly because I like the genre and the Sam Fisher character. I read the reviews for the first two books and I ignored the bad ones. I cannot believe that these books made it to print. The writing appears to have been done by a high school student or a non-native english speaker. There obviously was no editor assigned to the project. I lost count of the number of times words were used incorrectly or gratuitously.(My favorite, is when a "hidden surveillance team" was inserted -- as opposed to what, a "visible" surveillance team?) Worst of all, in these books Sam Fisher is a total moron. I won't put spoilers in here, but there are instances where someone is very obviously bad or try to kill Sam and after it would be paintfully obvious to anyone, he would say "I'm beginning to get the feeling that they are aiming for me" or "I'm starting to think this guy might be not be on our side". At the end of one of the books, he does something so stupid and amateurish that you won't believe it. And, if only a handful of people know about Third Echelon, why do I lose count of the number of people who know? Perhaps it is my ignorance, but do covert operatives take Army flights out of Dulles? Wouldn't he know he needed the access code in the many hours before he got to the facility he was infilitrating? If the facility was abandoned, why would they send him and not the FBI? These books have more holes than swiss cheese. My wife couldn't believe that insisted on finishing the books, but I was invested and wanted to know the resolution. Perhaps the practice of writing made the third one better or maybe they found an editor. But owners of the first two books should be issued a refund.

Second installment of Splinter Cell series. Has more character development but still quick interesting read. Should stop picking on Middle East countries and find another target to demonize...

                                                        5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!.......2006-12-20

This book was simply amazing. Most people say that you have to read the first one in order to understand this one, but really, there's nothing from the first book that occurs in the second book. It's basically about Sam's new missions and what he's doing now. There is no back track, just to clerify it. The book is about Sam chasing down Russian terrorists wanting to nuke L.A., but thats all you need to know with giving it away...
I love how detailed this book is about Sam's life in and outside of his job. He has a hard time getting close to people because he is reluctant about spilling his secret of being a NSA agent. His gadgets are SOO AWESOME. They are everything from a super futuristic gun down to his Five-seveN pistol. I actually haven't read the other books but I was so into this book that I am planning on getting them all in including the one that just came out. I hated to read until I found this book. It's really one of those "can't put down" books and hearing it from me is a BIG DEAL. For some of you though, it might not be the book for you because you have to be interested in spying and yes, there is some killing in here too,(you didn't expect a guy with guns not to kill anyone did you?).
The only problem I had with this book is that the author really went back and forth between Sam and the bad guys WAY too much. One chapter would be Sam on a mission and the next one would be the Russians. There were just too many point of views going around and I had a hard time keeping up with it some of the time. Otherwise I really reccommend this book and even if you're not interested in the stuff I just said I think you should still give it a shot. There are also a games of
