        Book Description

        The A-Players, the cream of the crop, the best of the best—no matter what you call them, and no matter what the job market is like, top talent is always in high demand and short supply.

        Topgrading, the first of Prentice Hall Press' groundbreaking works on gaining the talent edge, showed us that leading companies win by packing their organizations with the best people. It gave us a fool-proof method for identifying the A-players. Embracing Excellence gives you the secret formula for getting them to stay.

        Authoritative and practical, Embracing Excellence is based on more than thirty years of experience and an extensive six-year research study of what works—and what doesn't—in employee retention practices at firms large and small. Two of the industry's leading experts, Franklin Ashby and Arthur Pell, join forces to dispel the myths on high salaries, fringe benefits and other stale tactics, and demonstrate how an effective corporate culture is critical to retaining top talent and therefore essential to an organization's success.

        This unparalleled work provides tried and true methods for keeping top employees. Moreover, the book is packed with anecdotes, illustrations, real-life examples, worksheets and step-by-step guidance. The Organizational MRI is one of the many practical tools discussed which will help managers assess their current culture and shape their company into an employer of choice for today's coveted superstar performers.

        4 out of 5 stars The real question is why more companies don't do this!.......2002-05-20

        There is not much here that is brand new, but what are presented are solid concepts and philosophies that help create employee loyalty and business success. The book is an excellent and comprehensive look at the various methodologies to creating a company culture that attracts and retains great employees.

        The basic areas of discussion are; Qualities and characteristics of a great corporate culture. Methodologies to diagnose your corporate culture. How to find great people, including solid tips on benefits, interviewing, new employee orientation, retention issues such as work/life balance, and leadership.

        One of the more interesting and somewhat new approaches presented is the "Organizational MRI". Using the analogy of an MRI which looks deep inside a body for areas of concern, and organizational MRI is a process to look inside an organization for culture related issues which may impact employee loyalty and business results. It is an interesting and somewhat unique way to look at a familiar process. I also enjoyed the short section on the "worst techniques to obtain reliable information" which not surprisingly are used often in corporate America today.

        The authors also correctly point out that the best way to create a great culture for success is to have the right people. In my experience as an HR professional, I have found that the fastest way to change a culture is to hire the right people who will quickly impact those around them in a positive manner. The book outlines several methods for interviewing and onboarding new employees to capitalize on what they can bring to the organization. Also, the authors make the valid point of looking for talent within the organization as well. Not new stuff, but well presented.

        Overall, it is a book worth reading. The only real question is why more companies do not apply these time proven methods to build employee loyalty and business success.

        In a systematic and clear manner, the authors discuss the problems associated with clinical decision making and explore the current methods to solve them. In this monograph, they examine the results of combining the classical control system approach with the symbolic approaches which have been central to developments in artificial intelligence. Well illustrated with case studies, this volume will prove to be an invaluable resource to system scientists, engineers, computer scientists, and members of the medical community.

        I have been using this book for several years as one of the primary texts for the graduate students in a decision making class in the informatics program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
        It is the best single survey of decision making in healthcare that I have found. I would recommend this as a first book for those with and interest in this field. Other texts would be needed

Jones The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK Discovering the Solar System is a comprehensive, up-to-date account of the Solar System and of the ways in which the various bodies have been investigated and modelled. The approach is thematic, with sequences of chapters on the interiors of planetary bodies, on their surfaces, and on their atmospheres. Within each sequence there is a chapter on general principles and processes followed by one or two chapters on specific bodies. There is also an introductory chapter, a chapter on the origin of the Solar System, and a chapter on asteroids, comets and meteorites. Liberally illustrated with diagrams, black and white photographs and colour plates, Discovering the Solar System also features:
            * tables of essential data
            * question and answers within the text

            5 out of 5 stars Great Gift for the Young Scientist.......2006-10-29

            I watched a TV show on Galileo a couple of nights ago. With his crude telescope he saw the four big moons of Jipiter and was sentenced to house arrest for the remainder of his life. What could you imagine he would thought about receiving a kit like this one that represents what we have learned since his time. Here is a desktop mobile that has all the planets (it even has pluto, but what can I say), planets then called the wanderers because they moved back and forth among the stars.

            There's a book on exploring the solar system, including those from the past and missions planned through 2055. Again what would Galileo have thought about the very concept that we could send probes into space. Since the basic concepts of electronics hadn't been invented, he couldn't have imagined getting information back.

            All in all, a beautiful book for the interested. The kit is marked as suitable for ages 14 years and older. It would be a great birthday/Christmas present. Something the young scientist would find interesting but something he/she would not likely buy for themsel

              4 out of 5 stars A very nice book on the outer solar system........2006-02-28

              This is a really nice, and cheap, history of the outer solar system. Until recently Saturn was the last known planet. This all changed with the discovery of Uranus by William Herschel in 1781. Since then we have struggled to reveal information about the outer planets. The book covers both the personal lives of the main characters involved in the discoveries as well as the science involved without going into too much technical detail. At the same time it does not tend to oversimplify the significance of the science by using flowery language.

              As it was written around 1990 the book is slightly out of date, missing some of the latest discoveries. However, this is forgivable given the books price. I give the book 4 stars because it is not outstanding. It is however very readable and interesting. It would be worth reading for anyone who has a general interest astronomy/space etc.

              5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly informal and substantial.......2000-07-02

              This excellent book on the outer solar system is written for laypeople who want more than a short introduction to the subject. The writing style is informal but very informative.

              The book was published in 1988, as Voyager 2 neared Neptune. A 1990 paperback edition describes the actual flyby.

              There are chapters on Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, their discoveries, the related discovery of the first asteroids, the Voyagers' Grand Tour, the search for a tenth planet, and more.

              The author also remembers the human touch. There is ample discussion of planet discoverers William Herschel, John Adams, Urban Le Verrier, and Clyde Tombaugh. We also learn about the memorable people they worked with, and sometimes against (!)

              The author likes sidebars, which are quite interesting and keep the main text from bogging down. There you will find:

              * A short biography of Caroline Herschel (William's sister), the first woman professional astronomer;
              * Clyde Tombaugh on some of his experiences;
              * Gary Flando on his discovery of the Grand Tour;
              * James Christy on his discovery of Pluto's moon Charon;
              * Galileo's unsuspecting observation of Neptune in 1613;
              * The planned Galileo and Cassini missions;
              * Much more.

              One sidebar strongly supports Pluto's planetary status, but it concedes that if Pluto turns out to be a typical member of a hypothetical asteroid belt beyond Neptune, it might make sense to redesignate Pluto. Four years later, the Kuiper Belt was discovered...

              Hopefully Littmann will revise the book again to include the Kuiper Belt, the Hubble Telescope, the latest speculation on Planet X, and more.

              Highly recommended.

              *****
              January 28, 2006: I have just acquired the 1990 paperback edition.

              A new 30-page chapter thoroughly covers Voyager 2's 1989 Neptune flyby. The rest of the book is almost unchanged, so the reader can compare speculation and reality.

              The book suggests that a proposed 2000-2014 Pluto mission be named Tombaugh. New Horizons is now on the way to a 2015 flyby. It doesn't carry Clyde Tombaugh's name, but it does carry some of his ashes.

              Much has happened since Littman's 1990 revision, and indeed since my initial 2000 review. Galileo was crashed into Jupiter after completing its mission. Cassini is at Saturn. Two new moons of Pluto were discovered. Pluto is no longer the largest known object beyond Neptune. There is no consensus whether eight, nine, or ten objects deserve the term planet. If Littman revises the book again, he has a lot of new material to discuss.

              Still highly recommended.

                  Translated from Der Stern von dem Wir Leben, this title is a survey of the current knowledge about the sun. It explains how the sun is investigated, the key people and instruments involved with these discoveries, the results so far and what we still have to learn. Historical anecdotes are used as well as imaginary adventures of the ``man-in-the-street,'' Herr Meyer.

                  This book is truly wonderful. Easy and fun to read. It is one of the few science books I have read that eschews all mathematical formulae and still does a great job fully explaining the material. I really appreciated the way he explains background material rather than just glossing over it. For example he does a great job explaining magnetic fields from a very basic level. Unfortunately the price seems almost prohibative, I received the book as a gift from a relative in England, I hope it is cheaper there.

                    Book Description

                    Discovering the Solar System, Second Edition covers the sun, the planets, their satellites and the host of smaller bodies that orbit the sun. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the subject for science students, and examines the discovery, investigation and modelling of these bodies. Following a thematic approach, chapters cover interiors, surfaces and the atmospheres of major bodies, including the earth. The book starts with an overview of the solar system and its origin, and then takes a look at small bodies, such as asteroids, comets and meteorites.

                    Carefully balancing breadth of coverage with depth, Discovering the Solar System, Second Edition:

                    Praise for the First Edition:

                        5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-02-28

                        There are surprisingly few reviews of books in the Membrane Sciences genre. If you are applying membrane separations to development of a Biotech process, this is the book for you. This book is so well written it makes the engineering of membrane separation processes easy to understand even for newbies. It starts with the basics and gives thorough explanations of the physical phenomena underlying the process. Then it explains a variety of case study examples to show how a process was troubleshooted and improved. This book has detailed explanations of simple experiments that can be run to determine causes of problems that a membrane separations engineer might face.
                        Whatever stage of your downstream process needs to be improved, you can be sure that this book will specifically address your problem and give you some useful advice.

                              He revolutionized the horror tale, giving it psychological insight and a consistent tone and atmosphere; he invented the modern detective story; he wrote some of the world's best-known lyric poetry and a major novella of the fantastic; he impressed such writers as Baudelaire, Mallarme and Borges. If it's been a while since you read any Edgar A. Poe (he never used "Allan"), you've probably forgotten how terrific he is. And some of his best work is in his lesser-known stories, such as "The Imp of the Perverse" and "A Descent into the Maelstrom." In short, what are you waiting for?

                              4 out of 5 stars A Good Start.......2005-10-06

                              This book provides the reader a significant sampling of Poe's works both stories and poems. I found the 69 stories to be adequate for the casual reader including all the well known tales: The Masque of the Red Death, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Black Cat, and The Cask of Amontillado. I was pleased to see that "Hop Frog" also made the cut.

                              His included poems numbered 31 and included: The Raven, Lenore, To The River, The Sleeper, The Haunted Palace, and Dreams. I believe the collection is well suited for a "Selected Works" book.

                              The book itself is hardbound, the edges of the pages are gold, and a yellow ribbon book mark is built in to the top of the spine. The only negative thing I can truly say about this book is that my personal copy had a broken spine when I took it out of the box, though it was new.

                              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Plethora of E. Allan Poe Material.......2003-11-23

                              This is an excellent book, it has gold leaf paper and its own bookmark and has a GREAT sum of his work although some 'may' be missing but all the great ones are there such as the infamous The Raven and The Masque of Red Death, The Fall of The House of Usher among many others; to keep this short and simple this book is well worth the price and looks better in person then what amazon shows. Do keep in mind like I said this is a very nice book and only buy it if your either an avid Poe fan or want a great book to add to your growing library (like me), otherwise buy a paperback if you want something to tote around with you between classes etc.

                              5 out of 5 stars The Father of the Horror Genre!.......2003-03-16

                              Edgar Allan Poe is truely the father of Horror stories. My favourite creepy story is 'The Tell-Tale Heart' a short read that should be read late at night to get the atmosphere of a true Edgar Allan Poe work of art.

                              I also enjoyed 'The Masque of Red Death' - a little known short story as well as 'Murders in the Rue Morgue'. Poe's greatest known work - 'The Raven' is also included, and that is by far the best thing Poe has written.

                              There are not only short stories and poetry. Poe did give script writing a go, and the play 'The Power of Words' is an interesting read, and shows a discussion with a tutor and a pupil over various topics. This script is meant to be read and nor performed, however.

                              Edgar Allan Poe's best work is defienetly in this volume, and I recomened it for lovers of reading and not just poetry, and vice versa.

                              5 out of 5 stars "The Cast Of Amontillado".......2002-12-14

                              Edgar Allen Poe's, "The Cast Of Amontillado," is a witty and daring tale between two enemies. It humorously portrays the foil of Fortunato, as he is led through the catacombs. Poe's humor is dark, sarcastic and very ironic, which quickly becomes a signpost of the tale. Poe sets himself apart from other authors in his works, based on how he depicts and encounters death. It accentuates the notion that at times, your worst enemy will appear as your best friend. Pride is the downfall of every man and the same can be said for fortunato. "Nemo me impune lacessit."

                              2 out of 5 stars Go for the complete works.......2002-04-25

                              Edgar Allan Poe is one of America's greatest writers. He is an absolute master of the short story and the poem. A collection of Poe's writings is a welcome addition to any bookshelf. I would not, however, chose this particular collection.

                              Because all of his works fit handsomely in a single volume, there is no real need to purchase a "selected works" version like this one. There are other "value priced" editions that have everything and you will be better off with one of them. Look for the term "complete works."

                              Poe's writings do not disappoint, but this presentation of his writings does.
