Book Description
As stability has begun to return to the Asia-Pacific region, so do international investors' appetites for high-yielding Asian securities. Right now, due to the substantial bank debt accrued during the last financial crisis there, the liveliest investment areas in the Asian-Pacific region are fixed income instruments. Authors Jonathan A. Batten and Thomas A. Fetherston provide country-by-country analyses, including highly-focused descriptions of the history, current disposition, and future prospects of each country's bond markets, along with detailed explanations of the market structure and conventions in each.
Jonathan Batten is a Professor of Finance at Deakin University. His professional experience includes senior posts at the Australian Industry Development Corporation, The Bank of Tokyo, Credit Lyonnais and IBM Consulting in their Asia-Pacific Banking and Finance Group.

Book Description
Stochastic differential equations have many applications in the natural sciences. Besides, the employment of probabilistic representations together with the Monte Carlo technique allows us to reduce solution of multi-dimensional problems for partial differential equations to integration of stochastic equations. This approach leads to powerful computational mathematics that is presented in the treatise. The authors propose many new special schemes, some published here for the first time. In the second part of the book they construct numerical methods for solving complicated problems for partial differential equations occurring in practical applications, both linear and nonlinear. All the methods are presented with proofs and hence founded on rigorous reasoning, thus giving the book textbook potential. An overwhelming majority of the methods are accompanied by the corresponding numerical algorithms which are ready for implementation in practice. The book addresses researchers and graduate students in numerical analysis, physics, chemistry, and engineering as well as mathematical biology and financial mathematics.

Book Description
Stochastic numerical methods play an important role in large scale computations in the applied sciences. The first goal of this book is to give a mathematical description of classical direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) procedures for rarefied gases, using the theory of Markov processes as a unifying framework. The second goal is a systematic treatment of an extension of DSMC, called stochastic weighted particle method. This method includes several new features, which are introduced for the purpose of variance reduction (rare event simulation). Rigorous convergence results as well as detailed numerical studies are presented.

Book Description
George Webber has written a successful novel about his family and hometown. When he returns to that town he is shaken by the force of the outrage and hatred that greets him. Family and friends feel naked and exposed by the truths they have seen in his book, and their fury drives him from his home. He begins a search for his own identity that takes him to New York and a hectic social whirl; to Paris with an uninhibited group of expatriates; to Berlin, lying cold and sinister under Hitler's shadow. At last Webber returns to America and rediscovers it with love, sorrow, and hope.
"If there stills lingers and doubt as to Wolfe's right to a place among the immortals of American letters, this work should dispel it."
--Cleveland News
"Wolfe wrote as one inspired. No one of his generation had his command of language, his passion, his energy."
--The New Yorker
"You Can't Go Home Again will stand apart from everything else that he wrote because this is the book of a man who had come to terms with himself, who has something profoundly important to say."
--New York Times Book Review
Customer Reviews:
Great book in lousy condition.......2007-08-17
This is the last time I ever buy a book from Amazon. If you're going to list an item as new, it had better be in new condition when it shows up. The book looked like someone had beaten it with a hammer then aged it on a shelf for fifteen years - hardly in new condition. Amazon is just as bad now as any regular bookstore as far as the quality of their books. Do not buy books from Amazon unless you specifically collect old damaged merchandise.
It leaves you wanting more.......2007-08-10
This book was an upper and a downer for me. It's an upper because Wolfe does an outstanding job when it comes to character development. Sure, some readers don't have the patience or interest to get into the descriptions of background characters in a novel, but Wolfe really paints such a beautiful portrait of those that stand out in George Webber's mind. These characters really caught my attention, and the novel leaves me wanting more in the sense that Wolfe draws you in to the lives of these interesting characters, then ups and leaves them behind, not to mention that he leaves them behind during historical turning points.
But I think that Wolfe wants us to feel this way about the characters because the main idea in this story, which for me is the downer, is that the mind's eye is tricky, and when we reflect on the past with the mind's eye, it deceives us into thinking the past is better than it really was. We see this with Webber's disappointment when returning to Libya Hill. He was so excited to see the town of his childhood, only to find it a shell of what it used to be. Most people can relate to this event. I know I can. I remember my hometown being so unique and special, and then returning to my unique hometown to find that the specialness about it is gone and replaced with Lowe's and Best Buys. So when I go home to visit my family, I can't go home again. Same thing happens when Webber goes to Germany and sees it for what it really is when he was going there with the romantic idea of what it once was. It's so sad that with time, we all become so pessimistic. So I think he developed these characters so intricately to a point so that we have fond feelings for them while Wolfe protects us from what they really are and what they really become. At the point in which Wolfe leaves the characters, they are interesting and beautiful and perfect.
Overall, the story was bittersweet but captivating. The characters themselves were the heart and soul of this novel, and it is an endearing and thought provoking read.
Literary marvel; not for everyone.......2005-12-14
Before you read "You Can't Go Home Again," make sure you have read "Look Homeward Angel." Wolfe's novels are essentially romanticized autobiographies, and although Eugene Gant and George Weber are not exactly the same character, they both represent the author struggling with incredible but unfocused talent, trying to find his home in a world that is inhospitable to his genius. If you are at all the creative type, these books will resonate profoundly. If not, you might find them a little contrived. If you are *Southern*, you absolutely *must* read these books.
It's honestly difficult to do justice to Wolfe's poetry with a simple review, but I can say that no Southern author even approaches his writing ability, save Faulkner. These two books form the literary pillars of my creative ego; they are at once tragically self-conscious and fervently optimistic. It's such a shame that Wolfe died young as he did.
A final note--before reading the chapters about the party in New York, look up the artists Alexander Calder and Joan Miró. You'll find that an otherwise hilarious scene is actually a scathing satire of contemporary art. If you at all share his sentiments, you'll have trouble staying in your chair.
Great wit, sharp language, enduring social themes.......2005-04-07
While this is no "Anna Karenina", the book by Thomas Wolfe is definitely a cut above the ordinary. A wry and ascerbic humor pervade the book, which is very sharp and ornate in it's use of language, almost baroque, almost too much for my taste at first. As I navigated it's contents, however I became enamoured of this language, which was nothing if not characteristic of real and singular style.
On substance, it delivered rather nicely also, and I was most struck by the enduring social themes, the great issues that confront society at an ethical and a moral level, and how very little attitudes had changed from the 1930's, when this book was written until the 1990's, when I had read it. For example, on the attitudes towards homosexuality, both by the enlightened and the aghast, as well as the roles that homosexuals played in society, as an object of scorn among many of the commonfolk, as well as an object of amusement and curiousity among the elite, seemed little changed in half a century - not really a hopeful lesson, but one that stuck with me, nevertheless about the glacial pace of social reform and the stubborn perpetuity of predjudice and ignorance, passed down from generation to generation.
Well worth the read.
Tom Wolfe, go home.......2005-01-18
This book could have been written in 50 pages, maybe 55. Thomas Wolfe, obviously, a gifted, talented writer who conveys a point using 25 similes where one would do. He is anti Hemingway. You can easily skip 20 pages anywhere in the book and not miss a thing of any importance. Characters are so over analyzed that you would think you grew up with them.
It has a juicy beginning about a writer, George Weber, whose first book is published to rare reviews. The book is about corruption, petty politics, racism in small town in North Carolina and how the author exposes their hypocrisy. But he is heart broken when the town retaliates with venom as his comeuppance for telling the whole world their petty doings.
Then the book drifts into his love affair with a married woman, his travel abroad, first to England and then to his favorite land, Germany. But dark clouds are on the horizon as his beloved Germany is falling in the hands of Nazis. His encounter with racism of a different kind as witnessed in a train journey from Berlin to Paris is narrated in heart wrenching detail.
The book ends with an open letter to his best friend, his editor where the author pours his heart, a kin to a suicide note. Most believe this book is Wolf's autobiography. With all due respect I would rather read the other Tom Wolfe.

A Must read for everyone..........1999-07-21
This book brought back many fond memories of my youth. Back in the pre-Castro years I had many Americans friends who lived in Cuba. The list of essays by John Parker presented in this book are very informative. They relay the romance, humor and wonderful Zest for life of the Cuban people before the tragedy Castro's revolution. I have enjoyed reading this book. I will never forget my American--Cuban friends.
Nostalgic short stories about life in Cuba pre-Castro -.......1998-05-11
A must-read book for anyone who has ever traveled or lived in Cuba in the pre-Castro years; as American "colonistas" (as we were called) I returned to my heartfelt memories as a child who grew up as an American living in Cuba. The personal vignettes, as described by John Parker, celebrate the way we ALL should remember Cuba for its customs, traditions, and -- most importantly -- how those young, patriotic men gave their lives for their attempt to "free Cuba" from the dictatorship of Fidel Castro. This book has been donated for the "Brothers to the Rescue" (Hermanos al Rescate) effort towards the continuing effort to see our return to Cuba someday.
The impact of such a small book has been evidenced by reviews we have seen in Latin quarters around major U.S. cities, resulting in requests for finding this book (privately sold by Golden Quill Inc. through the efforts of Giles Gianelloni now reachable at "gilesg@gte.net"). Books & Books in Coral Gables, Florida, had carried the book until sold out.

Book Description
Described by the Chicago Tribune as a "latter-day version of Dickens' Bleak House," Bankruptcy: A Feast for Lawyers is a shattering indictment of bankruptcy law by a CEO who lived through the experience of Chapter 11. Author Sol Stein exposes a system that is supposed to provide an opportunity for troubled companies to reorganize, but kills more than 70% of the businesses that take refuge in it while enriching legions of lawyers. In the nightmare world of Chapter 11, the gainers are seldom the creditors or the debtor company, but rather the bankruptcy bar, impeached in this book by their own conduct and the condemnation of their ethical brethren. Besides his own experience, the author draws examples from diverse industries -- trucking, food, real estate, oil, and publishing.
