Book Description
IMAGINE a workplace that fosters collaboration, trust, and empowering relationships with others. Where supervisors listen, nurture, develop talent, and facilitate learning in an environment of mutual respect, trust, and accountability. And where, as a result, employees become self aware, self correcting, and truly motivated, thus helping their company ward off competition and stay on top of its game. Sound too good to be true? It's not—it's a description of a company that practices "coaching". Businesses today are becoming less invested in the old top-down management approach and instead are employing this proven leadership style, building world-class team spirit, cohesion, and optimum performance, and enjoying new levels of success.
In this book, author James S. Doyle demonstrates how to apply the coach concept to the game of business and establish a successful coaching relationship with any employee, within any organization. More than just tips and techniques, The Business Coach is a highly practical guide that leads the reader through a step-by-step process of growth and mastery. The coaching relationship, according to Doyle, grows from the "inside-out." It is not a role that can be picked up and put on like a uniform. It requires a shift in thinking and behavior, as well as a true commitment to "being" a coach, not just the desire to act like one. This book provides the necessary mind set, skills, and attributes needed to allow this internal transformation.
Drawing on his personal experiences coaching in one of the largest multinational companies in the world and leading business coaching seminars, Doyle explains why everyone in business needs a coach, and why the coaching relationship is so effective. Using practical examples and real-world business scenarios, Doyle teaches the strategies, methods and language used by the business coach to create a high-performing team. He reveals how coaches develop people on purpose, looking for the possibilities in each employee that they may not see for themselves and involving them in the process of planning, creating, and problem solving.
Many executives will agree that the toughest job a manager has is confronting poor performance and encouraging behavior change. Doyle shows how becoming a business coach can combat this, adding to the tools managers already possess as the reader learns how coaches support peak performance and advocate successful behavior. Doyle teaches how to avoid a false start at fostering a coaching environment at work, by working with the reader to build coaching competencies and create a climate where successful business coaching can take place. He also includes application exercises and self-assessment tools for practice and awareness raising, permitting the translation of creative ideas into the real world of business at a sensible pace.
For anyone who is ready to become a true business coach, willing to get in shape by going through the learning process and determined to "walk the talk," as Doyle would say, The Business Coach is the game plan to follow.
"Executives seeking to do for their organization what championship coaches do for their teams would benefit from The Business Coach." —Jim Collins, coauthor, Built to Last

Customer Reviews:
How to Be a Coach Instead of Just Acting Like One.......2006-03-11
James S. Doyle is the President of Customers, Inc. In this book he discusses a fundamental shift between empoyees and managers. Traditonal verticle organizations are giving way to empowered horizontal cooperatives. The new leader gains power by not soley based on his position, but by the acceptance and trust of his co-workers.
This book helps those in power positions to disabuse themselves of some of their old limiting styles and beliefs by presenting a compelling case for a new and more productive leadership style.
The theme of this book is centered on the core values one must have to pull off the challenge of filling this role successfully.
Five Stars
Coach your way to business success!.......2003-01-11
As a marketing and change management consultant, I would recommend this book to all managers (both new and experienced). In today's business evironment, change is continuous. Jim Doyle knows that even the best defined strategic initiatives will fail if you don't have true employee support and engagement. You can't dictate that support. But using Doyle's coaching techniques, you can inspire their support and enrollment through trust, respect, and accountability.
In addition, he provides useful insight into managing employee performance to help each employee reach his/her potential by focusing on their strengths, rather than weaknesses.
The wise manager will follow Jim's advice and create a team that is committed to success.
James S. Doyle Book Review.......2002-04-17
As a sales employee of General Mills I found many helpful and interesting ideas that could help me with my career development.
I strongly recommend anyone in management or a leadership role to read this book to help understand what it takes to coach sales employees to make them the best they can be for both their company and themselves. Sales managers can find good ideas in the following areas:
1) Team building
2) Personal coaching
3) Helping employees be successful
4) Highlighting employee strengths
Jim Doyle's - The Business Coach.......2001-06-26
"Often today's managers find themselves not in the old role of functional leadership - The expert, the source of power - but more often a Team Leader, an influencer, a facilitator - a coach!" In this one sentence, Jim Doyle summarizes the foundation and theme of his well written and insightful book, "The Business Coach". I totally agree with Doyle's analogy that sports and business coaching have many parallels: -Both sports and business coaches strive to motivate and inspire -Both demand commitment, action, and results -Both build trusting relationships with their players -Both need focus and vision -Both play to win. The new style of leadership in business today is not dictatorial. An effective business leader influences and encourages, directs and supervises, sets an example for others to follow. Today's leader knows how to get along with multiple personalities. Jim Doyle calls upon a great quote from Tommy Lasorda, former manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers: "Managing is like holding a dove. Squeeze too tight and you will kill it. Open your hand too much and you will let it go. That's the way it is with players." Coaching in today's business climate requires flexibility, creativity, and fresh approaches to new problems. Effective coaches evolve and grow - they don't stay the same. Jim Doyle very effectively explains how to become a better business coach. You will enjoy his clear communication and application exercises at the end of each chapter to help you "Walk the Talk". Jim Doyle's book, The Business Coach, is practical, empowering and represents a philosophy of business coaching which is so necessary in today's complex and competitive business climate. Become a more effective business coach and you will become a more effective business leader!
The Business Coach, A Game Plan for the New Work Environment.......2001-04-13
'The Business Coach, A Game Plan for the New Work Environment', by James S. Doyle is an excellent foundation for new, as well as, the seasoned manager. Jim uses numerous illustrations to allow the reader to relate to their own everyday experiences resulting in a better understanding of what coaching is and is not.
This book really hones in on the fact that motivation is not something that can be applied from outside, but rather it is taking the time to understand the individual and finding the key (internal)to making them want to accomplish something.
A must management tool for all levels.

Astronomy for the Layman - an agnostic's view
Customer Reviews:
Still valid after 7 yrs. ..........2002-03-25
Although some of the author's numbers are by now a bit obsolete after 7 years, the criticism of all religions is now valid more than ever before. After all, the Islamic suicide attackers of the WTC and the suicide bombers in Israel do it in the name of Allah and religious misinformation and extremism. Is their Allah not the same God as the Christian and Jewish God? As an atheist/humanist I do not agree with any religion, although I can tolerate them as long as they do not dictate their "morals" to me. Religions only divide the world and have brought little or nothing to the world in the past and today, other than death and destruction, hatred and distrust towards other believers and non-believers. This book should be read by all who question their own religion and have some basic interest in the advancement of sciences. Some of the scientific theories listed in this title have become reality in the meantime....
Astronomy for the layman.......2001-05-28
The title of this book has been changed at least once as evidensed by the sticker over the old title. I believe the title should be changed one more time and the book moved into another category. The "an agnostic's view" portion should be changed to something like "An UFO theorists view". I agree with most of the writers opinion but felt that I was simply reading an unqualified opinion. The few pages actual dedicated to Astronomy were interesting and showed me more proof on the lacking knowledge of the religious beginings. Anyone believing aliens played a hand in mans beginings or would like to learn more on this theory, should definately give this book a try.
an eyeopener against religious misinformation.......1998-03-02
science made easy for everybody written by an amateur scientist. His observations of contradictory religious teachings by all major religions are an eyeopener for anyone who already has some doubts about what is being taught about religion and what is misinforming the masses in over fifty countries in the world visited by the author. A must to read.
noted a new sub-title: An Agnostic's View.......1997-11-13
the new sub-title "An Agnostic's View" describes the contents much better and should have been used in the first place.
excellent criticism of all religious teachings.......1997-08-03
the author provides a very simple introduction to basic sciences
easy to comprehend, specializes on astronomy and compares scientific
reality with religions fiction, based on ancient
often contradictory teachings. He provides details of the devastating
effects of religious teachings in may of over 50
countries he visited. excellent reading for all frethinkers, agnostics
atheists and non-religious readers. He introduces his reasoning why
some of the religious teachings are impossible and
how many people had to suffer because they could not accept one or the
other religion .

Book Description
In the present volume, an effort has been made to organize and present a comprehensive overview of receptors for cationic guests. This begins with reviews of the various basic complexing systems: podands, crown ethers, lariat ethers, cryptands, and spherands. Natural cation-binding agents are also important hosts in supramolecular chemistry and their chemistry has been extensively studied. The structural aspects of complexation by natural hosts and crown ethers are reviewed separately and the topic is addressed for specific receptor systems within chapters dedicated to specific hosts. The physical chemistry of complexation and transport is reviewed along with the important application of anion activation, sometimes called phase-transfer catalysis.
In the second dozen or so chapters are presented overviews of specialized areas such as the formation of alkalides, the development of chemical sensors, chromoionophores, and redox-switchable receptors. The volume concludes with discussions of transition metal complexes of macrocyclic ligands, second-sphere coordination, complexes of organometallics, and finally of fullerenes.

Customer Reviews:
my favorite work by WIlde.......2007-06-25
My introduction to WIlde was through his dramatic work. I thought it was dull and dated. SO I assumed he was over rated and ignored his work for years. A few moths ago one of my homies was raving about Pictures of Dorian grey so I gave it a go. I found the first half to be very impressive, the second half wasnt bad either. I was glad to know that Wilde had earned his rep. I wasnt even aware of his fairy tales. wowza! homie can write! this is the strongest work ive read by him. each tale is profound and beautiful. six star classic work.
Sublime and Beautiful.......2007-06-21
Oscar Wilde has an eloquence that involves and transports the reader to magical lands that he in his mind has envisioned for us; lands where love, goodness, and kindness are the victors. I have often thought that we have left the best of us behind us, and Mr. Wilde is a prime example of this.
If you allow his powerful mastery of words for imagery and emotion to capture your heart and imagination, you will enjoy his literary works quite well.
Great, Unique Tales With Wonderful Morals.......2007-05-18
This is actually the first time I've read Oscar Wilde. I started The Picture of Dorian Gray a long time ago, but never finished it for some reason. His compete fairy tales were wonderful! I loved them all. They were all quite unique, but revisited common themes seen in children's fairy tales. The moral lessons were the same.
The book is broken up into two separate collections. The first is called The Happy Prince and the second is A House of Pomegranates. Wilde must have loved pomegranates as I think they are mentioned in nearly every fairy tale in the book.
The Happy Prince consists of 5 tales:
The Happy Prince: A statue of a prince asks a bird friend to deliver precious gems on his body to people who are in need in the town so that they may survive and in turn is deemed to be no longer beautiful.
The Nightingale and the Rose: A Nightingale makes the ultimate sacrifice in the form of a song so that a a boy may win the heart of a maiden.
The Selfish Giant: A grumpy giant closes his courtyard off to children so Spring refuses to come back leaving Winter to constantly blunder him. This one has a very bizarre ending in my opinion.
The Devoted Friend: A friend accepts a small favor and is expected to do entirely too much in return.
The Remarkable Rocket: A rocket (firecracker) who is quite arrogant ends up being the bottom of the bunch.
and A House of Pomegranates consists of 4 tales:
The Young King: A King has a series of dreams which lead him to no longer want the royal treatment once he sees what it costs others.
The Birthday of the Infanta: A dwarf who performs for the Infanta on her birthday becomes obsessively in love with her and is disillusioned on his way to finding her.
The Fisherman and His Soul: A fisherman gives his soul to be with a mermaid and learns the hard way the price that he has paid for doing so.
The Star-Child: A Child falls from the sky, is taken in by a family, and grows to have a horrible attitude. When he tries to redeem himself, he finds that it may be too late to do so.
Wilde's writing was remarkable and a pleasure to read. Fairy tales from this era are my favorite! The tone, the setting, and above all, the language is just perfect. The English language was at the perfect point for fairy tales at that time. Many of the stories had Christian themes to them, something that I didn't expect from Wilde. I found that interesting. This is definitely a collection that I hope to one day be able to read to my own children as they fall to sleep. Beautiful stories with classic lessons.
WHEN WILDE WAS A FATHER AND A GOOD FAMILY MAN.......2006-07-27
his wit and brilliance shone in tales for his own children. He was of course still an Irishman raising freedom fighters for a just society.
Don't tell anyone but bare text can be downloaded from the great guttenberg project of these stories, but it so much better to have this book to read to your own children at night, instead of the stupidities we see on television. It is so much nicer to have a book in hand to pass on to your own child, and this book has much more to teach and to entertain than any other modern so-called childrne's book.
Fairy Tales for Adults.......2006-02-25
Wilde's Fairy Tales work on many levels, and the moral is not always obvious. Really well-written.

the importance of being fanciful.......2000-10-13
oscar wilde has a wonderful way with words. no-one, not even his harshest moral critics, can deny this. if you're looking for the pointed and witty epigrams that peppered The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Importance of Being Earnest, you're in the wrong place.
these fairy tales have soft edges, and are obviously apologues. each one deals with complicated moral dilemmas -- but provides no solutions; the reader is often left feeling frustrated by the lack of clear moral direction that other fairy tales tend to have in abundance.
written more for adults than children, this book is a delightful way to spend an afternoon... if you don't mind having to think.
Book Description
For the first time in one volume, this complete collection of all the short fiction Oscar Wilde published contains such social and literary parodies as "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime" and "The Canterville Ghost;" such well-known fairy tales as "The Happy Prince," "The Young King," and "The
Fisherman and his Soul;" an imaginary portrait of the dedicatee of Shakespeare's Sonnets entitled "The Portrait of Mr. W.H.;" and the parables Wilde referred to as "Poems in Prose," including "The Artist," "The House of Judgment," and "The Teacher of Wisdom."
Customer Reviews:
A must have for any collection.......2006-05-02
I only came to this page to mark that I loved this book using the star system. Seeing that there is only one other review for this book I feel an obligation to write something more in its support. Maybe just telling you, the potential reader, this fact will tell at how much I like this book.
First off, if you've never read anything by Oscar Wilde before, this is a great place to start. He is a man who wrote in two extremes, though with many dimensions of those two: the very high and the very low. This book covers both of those poles in a complete way, giving the reader a feel of what the author can do with words.
Take the low pole, for example. The story 'The Nightingale and the Rose' will move you to tears if you're not careful to read it from a 'happy place'. It is a sad tale that observes love in a seemingly juvenile way (being that it is written as a fairy tale, something most modern audiences are not used to reading as adult literature and find themselves approaching with all their defenses down) but that handles it in such a way as to tilt our ready emotions into an abyss we are probably not ready to handle. Fairy tales are supposed to be about princesses, horses, and godmothers, right? "So what is this..?" We find ourselves asking at the end. It is genius.
To go to the other extreme of his work, try out 'Lord Arthur Saville's Crime' a story that begins with the title character finding himself caught up with a chiromancer (palm reader) who tells him that he is going to murder someone. The poor fellow, feeling that he cannot go forward with his engagement to a woman until this task is taken care of, goes about attempting to murder several unsuspecting characters. He does this knowing that it is his obligation, that he cannot possibly be happy until he has done what he must. I challenge you to read this and not laugh until you are red in the face.
Either extreme makes you think. The first story will have you questioning what love really is made of, looking inside of yourself to see to which extreme you gravitate. The latter story will have you wondering at fate versus destiny; which played its role in this story? I will not give away the ending but will tell you that you should spend some time pondering its conclusion.
Yet even in touching on these two stories I have but skimmed ever so lightly across what delights this book holds. Try the sinister implications found in the repetitions of 'The Fisherman and His Soul'. Laugh at the idiotic characterizations of Americans (I'm an American, for the record on this- yet it was still funny) in 'The Canterville Ghost'. Ponder on the parallels in the 'Poems Written in Prose' at the back of the book, each of which is like a short, succinct question to the reader.
Bottom line: I cannot recommend this book enough. I cannot recommend Oscar Wilde and his works enough.
-LP

The short stories in this collection include" Lord Arthur Savile`s Crime "and "The Sphinx Without a Secret".And also "The Canterville Ghost" and "The Model Millionaire"."The Canterville Ghost" is absolutely hilarious and yet at the same time very touching.

Tales you Never Forget.......2000-06-18
The Duckworth publication has a few nice, elaborate, and elegant line drawings (and 3 color plates) by Phillipe Julian.
The complete collection of his fairy tales is a treasure. Children should know the Nightingale and the Rose and the Selfish Giant just as they know Cinderella and Snow White. These are tragic tales, but so beautifully told.
Atheists who want their kids to be the same might not want them to see these stories, as Wilde writes of heaven and Jesus Christ. But that would be a disservice to the child... this is great literature.
