Many "fireballs" seen in the skies, often thought to be UFOs, are in fact manmade debris. Plutonium and other highly toxic fuels from failed Russian craft have already contaminated inhabited areas of Central Asia. Natural hazards such as comet particles can travel at 100 times the speed of a bullet and can severely damage satellites. There is also the danger of "spaceweather" effects, such as cosmic rays, that could interfere with a spacecraft's electronics and interrupt the global transmission of telephones and television.

Do not waste your time on this book........2003-08-13

I would sincerely not recommend this book to anybody.

First, it is very badly written and poorly structured. It contains a huge number of examples, that are very poorly used, and usually misplaced in the text. It is constantly skipping around from one topic to another, only to come back to the initial topic at a later time.

Moreover, scientific explanations are often so wild that one wonders whether the author actually understands what he is talking about. Sometimes it is frankly comical: "The present generation of heat shields date back to the 1970s, when they were designed to protect spacecraft from overheating if they got too close to the sun". It reminds me of Icarus in Greek mythology, whose wax wings melted when he went too near to the sun. I also find it regretful that there is no consistency at all in units, making it impossible for the reader to get any real sense of scale. The reader is simply supposed to read and be impressed by the big numbers such as "billions of electron volts".

Finally, I found this book very superficial. There are lots of examples, but there isn't much argumentation put around them. The reader is simply submerged with cases and left to sort things out for himself. The only point that I felt that the author was trying to make was how dangerous all this is. But this point is made more by the vocabulary than by argumentation. For example, he mentions that "(plasma clouds) strengthen the theory that there may be a new and menacing subatomic particle in existence". How can a subatomic particle be menacing? The idea is rather absurd. But from the word 'menacing', the layman is supposed to understand that this calls for fear.

Overall, I think that this book would have much benefited from some proof reading. It may contain some valuable information, but given the number of inaccuracies I have seen, I mistrust all the content. The combination of bad writing, shaky content and lack of insight makes me wonder what there is to get out of this book. Reading it I felt like I was listening to a savant monkey repeating inaccurately what he has heard from his master.

Don't Read This Book!.......2003-03-25

If you want to know about space debris in particular and the space program in general PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!! There are 67 MAJOR errors in the first 100 pages dealing with the space program which could have been detected by anyone with the smallest familiarity with the space program. The editing and review of the book was also very sloppy with misspelled technical terms as well as organizational mistakes too numerous to mention. Examples of this inclue the National Research Council working for NASA, NORAD working for NASA, NASA working for US Space Command, and two different incorrect names for NORAD on the same page. Another major error identifies von Braun with the Vanguard rocket that exploded on its pad on Decwember 6, 1957. The Vanguard rocket DID NOT launch Explorer 1; it was launched by a Jupiter-C also known as Juno. Another claim is that the cosmonauts on Salyut 1 died after their 230-day mission in 1972; these cosmonauts perished after their 23-day mission in 1971. In yet another major error, the author claims that Plesetsk, the major Russian military launch facility is in the Arctic wastes of Kazakhstan; this site is in Russia; the author confused the Baikonur launch site located in the desert steppes of Kazakhstan with the Russian site of Plesetsk in the Arctic. In another major error the author claims sky watchers in the United States saw the NEAR spacecraft as it travelled over the South Pole in 1996 at 300 miles above the Earth. This is a physically impossible look angle, since people in the US would have to look through the earth to see anything in the skies above Antarctica. The book is full of these errors. Don't waste your money!

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Balanced Scorecard, developed by Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton, is a strategic management tool that has been successfully implemented in the private sector. This tool uses a balance of a historical perspective (financial) and three operational perspectives (customer service, internal business processes, and innovation and learning) that allow managers to readily evaluate an organization's performance towards achieving its vision and mission. This study examines the applicability of the Balanced Scorecard concept to Government organizations as a potential strategic management tool. The Government organization chosen to test this applicability was the Naval Dental Center Pearl Harbor (NDCPH) because it was recognized in 1998 for its organizational excellence by receiving the Hawaii State Award of Excellence, and the author's personal experiences onboard NDCPH as comptroller. The study centered on analyzing NDCPH's Mission, Vision, Key Success Factors (KSFs), and performance metrics, for use in developing a proposed Balanced Scorecard framework. This was done by equating the KSFs with Kaplan and Norton's perspectives and then matching appropriate performance metrics to the KSFs. A balanced Scorecard framework that followed Kaplan and Norton's concept was recommended. The potential for adapting this framework to other Naval Dental Centers was also demonstrated.

A new method of the determination polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water samples was developed by continuous-flow microextraction (CFME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In this experiment, 15mL sample solution with no salt-added was flowed at the rate of 1.0mLmin^-^1 through 3@mL benzene as extraction solvent. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the developed method was found to yield a linear calibration curve in the concentration range from 0.05 to 15ngmL^-^1. Furthermore, the accuracy and repeatability of the method were good by calculating from water samples spiked at known concentrations of PAHs, and the recovery of optimal method was satisfactory. The results showed that CFME was an efficient preconcentration method for extraction of PAHs from spiked water samples.

Continuous ultrasound-assisted extraction has been coupled with preconcentration and flame atomic absorption spectrometry for the determination of cadmium and lead in mussel samples. Experimental designs were used for the optimisation of the leaching and preconcentration steps. The use of diluted nitric acid as extractant in the continuous mode at a flow rate of 3.5mlmin^-^1 and room temperature was sufficient for quantitative extraction of these trace metals. A minicolumn containing a chelating resin (Chelite P, with aminomethylphosphoric acid groups) was proved as an excellent material for the quantitative preconcentration of cadmium and lead prior to their flame atomic absorption detection. A flow injection manifold was used as interface for coupling the three analytical steps, which allowed the automation of the whole analytical process. A good precision of the whole procedure (2.0 and 2.3%), high enrichment factors (20.5 and 11.8) and a detection limit of 0.011 and 0.25@mgg^-^1 for cadmium and lead, respectively, were obtained for 80mg of sample. The sample throughputs were ca. 16 and 14 samplesh^-^1 for cadmium and lead, respectively. The accuracy of the analytical procedures was verified by using a standard reference material (BCR 278-R, mussel tissue) and the results were in good agreement with the certified values. The method was successfully applied to the determination of trace amounts of cadmium and lead in mussel samples from the coast of Galicia (NW, Spain).

This study examine the feasibility of As(III) removal from aqueous environment by an adsorbent, modified calcined bauxite (MCB) in a continuous flow fixed bed system. MCB exhibited excellent adsorption capacity of 520.2mg/L (0.39mg/g) with an adsorption rate constant 0.7658L/mgh for an influent As(III) concentration of 1mg/L. In a 2cm diameter continuous flow fixed MCB bed, a depth of only 1.765cm was found necessary to produce effluent As(III) concentration of 0.01mg/L, from an influent of 1mg/L at a flow rate of 8mL/min. Also, bed heights of 10, 20, and 30cm could treat 427.85, 473.88 and 489.17 bed volumes of water, respectively, to breakthrough. A reduction in adsorption capacity of MCB was observed with increase in flow rates. The theoretical service times evaluated from bed depth service time (BDST) approach for different flow rates and influent As(III) concentrations had shown good correlation with the corresponding experimental values. The theoretical breakthrough curve developed from constantly mixed batch reactor (CMBR) isotherm data also correlated well with experimental breakthrough curve.

Wonderful, Joyful coming of age novel set in Israel.......2006-07-14

I teach 8th grade literature at a Jewish Day School, so I am always looking for high quality literature that will speak to 13 year olds, and if it has some Jewish content, all the better. This is by far my students' favorite book of the year. We read it at the end of the year as they are getting ready to transition into high school, and it offers great discussion opportunities. But it is by no means a children's book--I loved reading it in its own right, as did my principal. In fact, another teacher walked into the Teacher's Lounge and saw it and said, "Oh, you're reading that! He's one of my favorite authors!" She was surprised to learn I was teaching the book. What a joy to find a book that speaks to young adults and adults alike!

Though I read it in the Hebrew, the story was so rich and intriguing that the translation sure transmits the wonder and excitement of this book. Through style and story, Zizag Kid is a success.
