Book Description
Widening social inequalities in Britain are reflected in uneven patterns of health within and between populations. Among professional health workers there is a developing awareness of the significance of tackling inequality in order to procure better health.
In Working for Equality in Health, the contributors, who include health activists, service users and carers, politicians and researchers as well as health and social care professionals, not only detail the inter-relationships and processes by which health inequalities are maintained, but present analyses--refined through experience--of strategies to combat them. They describe their attempts in practice to counteract the impact on people's health of the complex interaction of inequalities based on class, relative poverty, `race,' gender, age, disability and sexual orientation. This book brings to bear the understanding of a unique combination of practitioners and activists on a key issue for health experience, policy and practice.

Book Description
This book combines a most interesting area of study, celestial mechanics, with modern geometrical methods in physics. According to recently developed views and research, one of the basic qualitative characteristics of an integrable Hamiltonian system is a structure of the Liouville foliation. A number of interesting results have been obtained. In particular, some of the constructed topological invariants did not appear in integrable cases investigated by many researchers earlier on. The topology of the isoenergy surfaces is also strongly different from what authors presented before. Some new topological effects in the problems of dynamics on spaces of constant curvature have been discovered. At present there are no other books published in this particular area. This book is intended for specialists and post-graduate students in celestial mechanics, differential geometry and applications, and Hamiltonian mechanics.

Book Description
The award-winning translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have given us the definitive version of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s strikingly original short novels, The Double and The Gambler.
The Double is a surprisingly modern hallucinatory nightmare–foreshadowing Kafka and Sartre–in which a minor official named Goliadkin becomes aware of a mysterious doppelganger, a man who has his name and his face and who gradually and relentlessly begins to displace him with his friends and colleagues. The Gambler is a stunning psychological portrait of a young man's exhilarating and destructive addiction to gambling, a compulsion that Dostoevsky–who once gambled away his young wife's wedding ring–knew intimately from his own experience. In chronicling the disastrous love affairs and gambling adventures of Alexei Ivanovich, Dostoevsky explores the irresistible temptation to look into the abyss of ultimate risk that he believed was an essential part of the Russian national character.
Customer Reviews:
Dostoevsky's "Pulp".......2007-07-19
These two short novels by Dostoevsky, are a change of pace fot the writer. "The Double" was written when the author was young and was sort of a "riff" on Gogol-style absurdity. Mr. Golyadkin goes to work one day and finds a man with the same name who looks just like hiim doing his job. What's worse is that the other man is more popular with the coworkers than he ever was. It is a darkly comic story who's main character is a vague, early take on Dostoevsky's Underground Man/Raskolnikov character.
"The Gambler" was written for money and in a hurry. He was trying to finish "Crime and Punishment" but needed to publish a book FAST so he dictated this short book to a secretary (whom he later married). It's about the foolishness of the gambling community at Baden-Baden in Germany. All of Dostoevsky's Gemran stereotypes are on display so take those for what they're worth. The great fun of this book is the pace; the dictated novel zips along faster than most 19th century novels ever do. It's as close to a Summer read as Dostoevsky ever got.
Five stars might be a little high for such trifles that are so out of character for Dostoevsky but the writing is top notch, much better than reading "The Adolescent" or "Insulted and Injured." The translation is tight and the stories are really a lot of fun. The translations by Jessie Coulson (published by Penguin, I think) are also very good.
Great companion, the ulitmate translators, Everyman, what more needs to be said.......2006-01-31
The perfect little companion piece to two of Dostevsky's several short stories, and two of his best if not THE best might I add.
I have read both these stories before but translated by different authors in the Great Short Works compilation by Perennial classics. Before I go on to mention about the Peaver/Volkhonsky translations which are superior I will talk briefly about both stories, not so much what they are about (you can find many of those around here) but of the translations themselves.
The Double is quite a fascinating short story, but for a lot of people it doesn't have closure, and the ending gives the impression of cheating the reader. I first read the George Bird translation which is actually okay compared to this one, but nowhere near as colourful. You will really get a kick of Mr. Golyadkin's play into madness, it is quite a wild ride.
The Gambler is truly one of those books that litteraly makes your skin crawl. Also Peaver/Volokhonsky's translation compared to Constance Garnett is FAR superior full of life and what I call Dostoevsky "flow" where as Garentt's comes off as 'flat'. The Gambler isn't just a well written story but also gives a glimpse into a time period that doesn't exist any more, (his comments about Frenchmen, Englishmen, Germans and Poles is quite insane) and a depth into the soul of the tortured novelist who suffered the afflictions of the main character. You will also get a serious kick out of the high wheeling grandmother (baboushka) in this book, she is one of the most memorable characters in any story EVER.
Both these stories are great page turners you wont be able to stop until you are done.
More importantly, the Everyman book looks great on my book shelf as always. And this is just the perfect thing highlighting two of his great short stories. The only one I can think that were better than these two is "A Nasty Anecdote" (sometimes translated as "A disgraceful affair").
As for a Dostoevsky work and how it is presented in this companion, it is a sure 5 star winner!
Book Description
Double Down is a true story, a terrifying roller-coaster ride deep into the heart of two men, and into the world of floating Gulf Coast casinos. When both of their parents died within a short time of each other, the writers Frederick and Steven Barthelme, both professors of English in Mississippi, inherited a goodly sum of money. What followed was a binge during which they gambled away their entire fortune-and more. And then, in a cruel twist of fate, they were charged with cheating at the tables.
Told with a mixture of sadness and wry humor, and with a compelling look at the physical aura of gambling-the feel of the cards, the smell of the crowd, the sounds of the tables-Double Down is a reflection on the lure of challenging the odds, the attraction of stepping into the void. A cautionary tale (the brothers were eventually exonerated), it is a book that, once read, will never be forgotten.
Customer Reviews:
A must read!!!.......2004-10-09
Excellent! A wonderfully entertaining story, beautifully told. The only problem, I wish it had gone another 100 pages! This is one of those stories you wish someone would develop into a screenplay for a movie!
Final thoughts: BUY THIS BOOK! You wont be disappointed!
Of Nepotism and Naivete.......2004-06-06
First, the obvious: neither Barthelme brother would have cushy college-teaching jobs had not their eldest brother, Donald, been a trendy post-modernist icon. The younger brother, Steven B., has managed to publish exactly one (1) book of short stories; Rick, the larger, plumper one, has some sort of gossamer reputation among those who like trailer-park fiction. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of better writers with better qualifications who would kill and maim with gleeful abandon for jobs at Southern Mississippi -- and who would devote themselves to those jobs, and to their students, rather than run off two or three times a week to squander Daddy's money at the blackjack tables [disclaimer: the undersigned thinks she is one of those "better writers"]. That said, this slender volume does indeed fascinate: I read it straight through in five hours, and so will most readers of a literary bent. The brothers B. have in fact done me a service, one years of shrink visits and antidepressants have failed to do -- in one stroke, they have made me glad, glad, glad that I abandoned the academy, failed to obtain a Ph.D., and find myself teaching high school English thirty years after my Iowa fiction MFA. Theirs is a cautionary tale, of what may happen to smart people with minimal reality contact and few, if any, day-to-day responsibilities. The cavernous lack of common-sense knowledge they display in their forays to the Gulf Coast casinos would be inconceivable to anyone who's punched a clock or handled an insurance claim. They are actually surprised to find that casinos have a corporate identity! Gee, they thought those people were their friends ... gahh! As for the dead father they apparently despised, I felt sorry for D. Barthelme Sr. His hard work, his habits of deep thinking and attention to detail, become monstrosities in the ham-hands of his two youngest sons, who in fifty-plus years on this planet have not managed to obtain perspective one. The book is good -- the descriptions of gambling's intoxications, the minute processing of each foolish and silly and self-deluding thought as it arises, are executed with consummate skill -- and yet one can't help concluding, as the memoir shrinks down upon itself into a puddle of anticlimax, that six months or so in prison would have been good for these men, taught them a painful life-lesson or two. Crucial to an understanding of the brothers' plight is the fact that neither Barthelme bothered to have children, thus giving themselves the right to be babies forever. They are not so much perpetual adolescents as they are pre-pubescent (wife and girlfriend notwithstanding), mired forever in Fiftiesland where, if you want to be a cowboy, you just put on the hat and yell, "Bang-bang!" They are not intellectual -- or accomplished -- enough for the ivory-tower defense they so quickly assume; what they are, are second- and third-tier journeymen blessed with a famous name and a glib ability to sling the relativist Crisco. While one may end up wishing Barthelme Sr., who unlike his sons appeared to be able to distinguish right from wrong, had willed his inheritance somewhere else, this reviewer is grateful for the folly of his heirs. A job at Southern Mississippi may be gravy, but that thin gruel isn't nourishing. Real life is the real meat.
A story of loss.......2004-06-02
Double Down is a terrific book about loss. Frederick and Steve Barthelme are brothers who moved to Mississippi to become college professors. They come from a very close knit family, and when it is unwoven from the death of their Mother and Father, a gambling addiction is triggered. Steve and Frederick become regulars at The Grand, a local casino, and they start going at least once a week and spending the whole night there all the way into early morning. After blowing all of their inheritance from their parents, they are acussed of cheating. They were indicted and charged with a felony, and forever kicked out of their favorite casino. This didn't stop their gambling addiction, however it did slow it down. They make fewer trips, to another casino and are less intense gamblers.
The book was well written and for the most part it kept my attention. Some parts they seemed to ramble off about their parents and family, and it gets slow. The accounts of their gambling binges keep you wanting more. They know they should stop, but keep throwing their money in anyway. I recommend this to everyone who is intrested in gambling.
Double Down.......2004-05-18
Double Down, a book about two brothers who discover the world of gambling, has the suspense and drama needed for a good gambling story. The two brothers, who happen to be respectable college professors, move down South to Mississippi to be around their parents. The family, which has drifted apart through the years, has come together for their parent's final years. Soon after their dad die's, the inheritance money starts burning a hole in the brother's pockets. Riverboat gambling puts out the fire. The wild ride lasts for two years, until the Casino accuses them of cheating. Through it all, the brother's learn about themselves, family, and why people do the things they do.
Good story poorly told.......2004-03-13
An interesting book for anyone who's ever been addicted, especially to gambling. This work has a major weakness, the lack of an ending, satisfactory or otherwise. The idea that gambling addicts could spend as much time at the casinos as they say they did and not shortchange their employer and students, doesn't ring true. Also, there is no indication that either brother kept a detailed diary during their gambling sprees. The details, amounts, conversations, they supposedly recall for the book are suspect. Still, Double Down is a decent read. The brothers, however, were about the easiest pickings ever to enter a den of gambling. They learned surprisingly little about how to gamble. There is a bookshelf full of better books on the gambling life than this one. For example,Anthony Holden's Big Deal, Andy Bellin's Poker Nation, Jesse May's Shut Up and Deal, Ben Mezrich's Bring Down the House.

too wordy.......2006-02-04
I've lost interest in the last third of this book. I'm skipping over many pages. I feel that he is too wordy and descriptive. A lot of his writing is not essential to the plot? Just get to the point. He should definitely not be compared to the great Elmore Leonard, I love his books.
helluva writer-great story!!.......2004-02-22
been there and came close to what he writes about, and he knows the feelings -the depression after the all day and night game-the hollowness felt on returning to the other non poker world, even as a winner and the discipline and bile producing tension of the game -the oppressive, stifling heat of south florida the pillsbury man hates so much--the seediness underlying palm beach's supposed grandeur-the people are scary real--they exist! - he must know their prototypes-these can't be whole cloth inventions!--best poker story-let alone novel,i've read to date.he writes with a patience for his characters' thoughts that is fluid and comes only with superior craft and brilliance of exposition-wonderful stuff-not a hack writer and tough to repeat these intensities again and again-where leonard is formulaic kakonis is unique--more gritty and nasty and real -he doesn't use his people for laughs-if there are any they arise naturally from the action--there is that place he writes about and he writes about it better than anyone else-got to get michigan roll since this is the first kakonis book i've read--a find!!
As good as leonard? I don't think so........2002-05-16
After reading the glowing reviews of this book, I ended up disappointed by it--although I want to give Michigan Roll a try. First, the plot was predictable. Waverly is holed up across a conveniently abandoned hotel, which you just know is going to figure prominently. When his room gets conveniently fumigated (convenient from the perspective of the plot), you anticipate what is going to happen. So, the action comes across as contrived. Second, Kakonis completely and relentlessly overdoes the slang. Slang brings life to dialogue, but I've never heard anyone in real life use slang as much as his characters do. It was almost as if he would take every single nonslang sentence like "We need to get $200,000" and then translate it into slang ("We need to score 2 balloons" or something), which is OK in moderation, but just don't do it for *every* sentence, because then it doesn't sound authentic. Leonard is a master at capturing everyday speech patterns, but he never overdoes it. Third, the pace of the book starts off too slow. For the first half of the book, I keep picking it up and then putting it down after a couple of pages. The plot doesn't gather steam until the card games. Fourth, his characters are blatant stereotypes--*every one*. Fifth, Waverly is supposed to be the sympathetic "doomed yet philosophical tough guy," someone at home in Jacktown but who can quote Marvell, yet I got tired of his self-pity. Sixth, some scenes included errors (a room is too dark to see in, and then suddenly a character is gathering up small objects from the floor as if it were well-lit) or were just plain unbelievable (would he/she really act this way in this situation?). Given all that, why am I going to try another of his other books? Because this book had a few things going for it: the gambling angle, humorous characters, occasional exciting action sequences. Maybe Michigan Roll hangs together better.
America's finest mystery writer has put his pen to another w.......1997-02-22
Tom Kakonis is perhaps the best mystery writer in America
today. Though he has not received one tenth of the acclaim or the attention given to Elmore Leonard, his cast of characters is more colorful and his plots more intriguing. Tom Kakonis is a true artist with respect to the "craft " of writing. As a former bookseller at one of Denver's more renowned bookstores,I recommended Tom Kakonis hundreds of times and always heard gratified thanks from returning customers. Double Down is a top-notch mystery/suspense that will be enjoyed by any reader of James W. Hall, Elmore Leonard, or James Burke

Book Description
High roller Skye McNally can't seem to go straight. She wants a thirty-day coin from her Gamblers Anonymous group, but the odds have always been against her. Her father is one of New York's biggest bookies and she's spent most of her life betting the over-under, and learning how to double-down.
Vegas may not be the best place for a gambling addict trying to make sense of her life -- so Skye escapes to the Nevada desert. There, she has a chance encounter with Mark Shannon, a star quarterback who's made headlines by disappearing weeks before the Super Bowl. For the first time in her life, Skye discovers that there are some things more intoxicating than the rush of numbers.
But the people invested in Mark's career aren't about to lose their golden boy to a bookie's daughter with a checkered past -- and they're willing to play hardball. But don't bet against Skye. She's always been a woman who knows how to play the long odds . . . and win.

Double Down.......2005-08-16
Skye McNally's addiction to gambling was inevitable, somewhat. Being the daughter of a bookie and a resident of Vegas stacks the deck against her. No matter how hard she tries, she just can't seem to break free, until on her way back to Vegas after a visit home, she has a chance encounter with an on the lam football player. She and Mark find themselves falling in love, and better yet, she loses all need to gamble. Yet, love is the biggest gamble of all, and when her past comes to light, Skye may have to lose to save the man she loves more than blackjack from scandal.
*** This compelling drama flies by quickly. Skye is an empathetic heroine. Though it is unlikely that many of us share her problem, most of us do have some issue that dominates our lives, and her finding freedom gives everyone hope. Tess Hudson's writing has more of an edge than Susan E Phillips, but there is a similiar feeling to the writing. So, if you enjoy the Stars, you may like this as well. ***

interesting look at gambling addiction .......2005-04-27
Having learned to double down before she knew her times table, Skye McNally grew up in a bookie's household as her father was and still is one of New York's leading bet takers. Skye resides in Vegas where she tries go straight (not a poker hand) by joining Gambler's Anonymous. However, the casino siren calls for her so she falls off the wagon until she decides to flee into the nearby Nevada desert where no cards, dice, wheels, or slots can tempt her.
In the seemingly middle of nowhere trying to detox off of gambling, Skye meets New York Mustangs superstar quarterback Mark Shannon who vanished recently. The duo share a royal straight flush and fall in love, but his handlers have a million dollar item in the Big Apple's Golden Boy and they will never allow a bookie's tainted daughter to devastate that image.
DOUBLE DOWN is an interesting look at gambling addiction starring a likable female protagonist. Skye drives the intriguing story line with her need to wager seemingly part of her DNA make-up although some of it is obviously caused by nurturing. Her need will remind readers of Altman's California Split with the two compulsive gamblers never satiated even with the big score. Once her addictive personality decides to bet that Mark is her sure thing big score, no one will stop her pursuit of him except if he punts her out of his life as his advisors insist he must.

Double Down is a sure bet!!!.......2005-04-25
WOW!!! I loved this book by Tess Hudson....Skye is just great, she finds herself in quite a bit of trouble on occasion, and has a best friend to lean on who tries, without much luck, to keep her on the straight and narrow! The QB that's MIA is only fuel to the fire and sounds like a real stud! It's a great book, a quick read, and one I highly reccommend!
