    Book Description

The papers in this volume were presented in Budapest at the 20th Colloquium of the Société Universitaire Européenne de Recherches Financières (SUERF), arranged in association with the Robert Triffin-Szirák Foundation. Each paper deals with a different aspect of the characteristics of and trends in corporate governance. The three main topics are:
  • Corporate governance of financial institutions;
  • Corporate governance as exerted by financial institutions;
  • Financial instutions as participants in the transfer of corporate governance. £/LIST£
The structure of financial markets and institutions has a significant impact on the ways in which the power to manage corporate resources is allocated. The relative roles of different types of owners and the legal framework within which they operate are currently in a state of flux throughout Europe. Financial integration in the European Union, the transition to open market economies in Central and Eastern Europe and privatization, have a profound effect on the behaviour and influence of different enterprises. This collection of papers demonstrates the range of aspects of corporate governance in a world characterized by rapid technological, political and institutional change which is currently concerning researchers and practitioners.
The authors come from a wide number of countries and disciplines, and include people from leading banks and corporations, public officials and academics, providing different perspectives on corporate governance, financial markets and global convergence in eastern and western Europe.
Their contributions will be of considerable interest to academics in the fields of finance and banking, monetary economics and macro-economics, and also to professionals in banks, securities houses, corporate treasuries, pension funds, consultancies, law firms, central banks and regulatory bodies.

      Book Description

Learning and Development enables students and managers of learning and development (L & amp;D) to understand the theory and practice of L & amp;D in organizations. The book explores the concept of learning from a variety of perspectives through the use of examples of research and practice from all over the world. It takes a broad view of learning as encompassing both explicit and implicit and individual and collective learning processes. The central argument of the book is that the practice of L & amp;D should be based upon a rigorous theoretical and empirical base. To this end, each chapter uses synopses of research studies and case studies from businesses to illustrate the most important theories, concepts and models. For the benefit of students and teachers each chapter also contains lists of key concepts, knowledge outcomes, 'perspectives from practice ', 'perspectives from research ', discussion points (for individual or class use), and concept checklists and is illustrated with diagrams, tables and 'L & amp;D facts and figures '.

        Book Description

Now published in its Second Edition, the Textbook of Clinical Trials offers detailed coverage of trial methodology in diverse areas of medicine in a single comprehensive volume.

        Praise for the First Edition:

"... very useful as an introduction to clinical research, or for those planning specific studies within therapeutic or disease areas." BRITISH JOURNAL OF SURGERY, Vol. 92, No. 2, February 2005

The book’s main concept is to describe the impact of clinical trials on the practice of medicine. It separates the information by therapeutic area because the impact of clinical trials, the problems encountered, and the numbers of trials in existence vary tremendously from specialty to specialty. The sections provide a background to the disease area and general clinical trial methodology before concentrating on particular problems experienced in that area.  Specific examples are used throughout to address these issues.

The Textbook of Clinical Trials, Second Edition

An invaluable resource for pharmaceutical companies, the Textbook of Clinical Trials, Second Edition appeals to those working in contract research organizations, medical departments and in the area of public health and health science alike.

This latest volume in the Advances in Chemical Engineering series, is a contemporary analysis of the preparation, structure and properties of
biomaterials with emphasis on the molecular design and material/polymer
interactions. The book addresses cell-biomaterials adhesion,
biomaterials and gene therapy, protein adsorption , platelet and white
cell activation processes, molecular design and surface modification of
                              novel biomaterials.

                                  Book Description

The complexity of the microbial population of the animal gastro-intestinal trac has been recognised long ago. However, thus far, investigations have been limited to a few major groups, considered to be dominating, and pathogens that are detrimental and may case diseases and concomitant financial losses in the production animal. Thanks to the latest developments, including improved micriological detection and sampling techniques, and the application of molecular tools to monitor the presence of specific strains in the intestine, our knowlede has increased rapidly in recent years. In addition, new approaches towards improving and/or stabilising animal health, are addressed, with special emphasis on probiotics, and also with regard to the use selected bacterial strains as vehicles for delivery of pharmaceutically active compounds to the muscosa. The book is unique in several respects, not only by its coverage of an extremely wide area in animal gut microbiology, but also by the fact that production animals such as fish and reindeer are included. Scope and treatment of the subject matter and the kind of information that can be found in the volume: Colonisation and development (succession), and mucosal surface composition of the normal microbial population flora in the healthy animal are addressed, whilst estensive information is given on diverse and dominating bacterial populations of different animal types. Reference is also made to those microbial groups considered to be of special benefit to the health and immune protection of the (young) animal bacteria. The development and application of models of the Gastro-Intestinal tract provides a solid basis for studying gut microbial interactions, whilst molecular approaches and the us of molecular tools to monitor the presence of specific strains in the intestine is treated in a comprehensive manner.

Have you ever sat and thought, man, I wish someone would write a book about living? And possibly loving? Well, Henry Green has gone out and done just that. I had never thought that a book about going to parties might be necessary, but after reading it I think that Mr. Green has indeed performed a valuable service. This wonderful collection of novels is, quite frankly, a comprehensive exploration, and no new books need be written on any of these subjects.

In any case, the writing made my jaw drop in spots, it was so good, and Green way of looking at things is funny and humane while being mercilessly clear-eyed. The only reason I think they've stopped teaching his books in colleges is because they don't have the sort of things one can write papers about: complicated networks of imagery and whatnot that can be dug out of the text and have a title slapped on them. Green's book are too alive to have anything particularly systematic going on in them, while retaining the structure and unity of true works of art. Amazing books, go out and read them.

I only read "Loving," but let me tell you, that book is the worst. Every fundamental rule of writing is broken is this "book." Yuck! I mean, the last line of the book is really "and they lived happily ever after." Puh-leeze!

3 out of 5 stars Loving, Living, and Party Going.......2002-12-07

Three satirical novellas about three different classes of British citizens.

'Loving' is a comical look at British servants. The setting is Ireland during the 2nd World War. The dialogue is typical of the class of people being profiled and is mildly funny. The servants steal, gossip, and con each other as they struggle with their future and fret over the potential Nazi threat to Ireland.

'Living' is set in Birmingham and features charcaters who work in a factory. Younger workers and upcoming managers clash against older workers and management. Even though it was not as funny as the other two 'Living was was my personal favorite beacuse the characters were easier to relate to.

'Party Going' is a tongue in cheek satire of the rich and spoiled as they are stranded at a train station waiting to begin a holiday in Paris.

A constant theme in all three novellas is the uneasiness of all the characters over what they perceive as a changing world.

If John Updike is a writer's writer, Henry Green is a writer's writer's writer! This volume is an excellent introduction to this little known, fascinating, 20th century British writer.

"Loving" reminds one of "Remains of the Day" but even though it was written decades earlier is richer in theme (notice the peacocks in the book).

"Living" is my favorite of Green's novels, a lovely evocation of working class life that contains some of the most beautiful prose of the 20th century (stylisticly, Green eschews the use of articles, and this gives his prose an other-worldly poetic quality).

"Party Going" is at once more existential and more funny... upper class silly young things (kindred spirits of Bertie Wooster) are caught in an Ionesco-esqe fog that traps them in a train station (notice the pigeons in the book).

If you love Green as much as I did after finishing this volume, you'll quickly seek out his other 6 books.

Written at the end of the Second World War, sandwiched between 'Once upon a day' and 'they lived happily ever after', a death and a marriage, 'Loving' is a fairy tale of the rarest enchantment. While war and social disruption echo from the 'real' world, 'Loving' offers us a sprawling castle from which we never leave, crowded with brilliant peacocks, doves making love on a huge dovecote replica of Pisa's Leaning Tower, and the most elaborately absurd decor in fiction. Within this rarefied, hermetic milieu, broadly familiar from the novels of Elizabeth Bowen and Evelyn Waugh, unravels a tale of a declining aristocracy (the cuckolded man of the house is at war) and cast of bickering, spying, scheming, anxious, unsettled servants, with the focus, unusually, on the latter, especially Raunce the new butler, and Edith, the beautiful, lively maid, two of the richest characters in fiction, not because they're particularly extraordinary, but because Green, in fleet, tightly packed comic-romantic-ironic-prismatic prose, remains alert and faithful to their every mood, whim, desire and fear, creating a genuine, joyful, life-like unexpectedness, and, in the combination of unreal surroundings and emotional realism, rapture after rapture of epiphany, such as the distant sight of two girls waltzing to a worn phonograph, endlessly reflected in the glass of a chandelier. It is one of my favourite books.

'Living' is an astonishing achievement by any standards, never mind those of a 24-year-old, and one that suggests that Green's peers are not his schoolfriends Waugh or Anthony Powell, but prose-poets like Virginia Woolf or Samuel Beckett who try to capture the quicksilver complexity of human behaviour. Like 'Loving', 'Living' is a story of the working class, here labourers in an iron foundary in Birmingham, and their wives, daughters and children, with their 'superiors' again playing a subordinate, even ridiculous role. The novel's style is at first daunting, spliced into cross-cutting vignettes, and written in a language that approximates a proletarian idiom. This could have been embarrassingly patronising, a la Galsworthy or Arnold Bennett, but actually facilitates an elastic language full of pure, pregnant poetry. The sharp cross-cutting highlights the novel's many divisions - boss-worker, man-woman, young-old, community-individual etc. - but also connects them in unexpected ways. The title is typically multi-layered - meaning the work people have to do; the way it defines their lives; the struggles of people to better their lives, or simply to live well in an atmosphere of mechanical routine; the idea of class or work as a living in the religious sense, as a vocation you can't avoid. Rigid livelihoods and iron works, a world where the public and private are virtually indistinct, paradoxically produce metaphors emphasising flight, water and fluidity.

The focus of these two novels is reversed in 'Party Going', with its cast of brittle Bright Young Things going on holiday to the Riviera. In a startling narrative conceit predating by two decades Bunuel's similar film 'The Exterminating Angel', the entire novel takes place during four hours in a London railway station, as the passengers are stranded by a heavy fog. Wrenched out of a glittering social context, the party-goers' superficial personalities are exposed, their petty selfishness barely masking fears (identity, sexual, social, gender, age, the future etc.) and resentments. As their tempers fray in the railway hotel, the suburban crowd below sing and laugh and grow increasingly irked outside, a terrible mass embodying various hysterical anxieties for the socialites when they can be bothered to notice them. As this structural image suggests, 'Party Going' can be read as a 'State of the nation' allegory, written between 1931 and 1938, and oppressively articulating the general deterioration of a decade Auden called 'low, dishonest' - it is irresistable to see it portending the coming war and social upheaval. The novel begins with a character finding a dead bird, and besides the fog-dark plot inertia that stills the novel, 'Party Going' is suffused with thoughts and images of sickness and death, its minimum narrative unfolding in interminable, sterile tableaux. If this makes it sound like a downer party, I must add that it is Green's funniest novel, with situations and dialogue as laugh-out-loud funny as Waugh, but with the added, mercurial Green poetry (water and birds again) and descriptive geometry, lending dignity and depth to non-entities who don't seem to deserve it.

Three novels - some of the most remarkable prose of the 20th century.

Henry Green explored class distinctions through the medium of love. This volume brings together three of his novels contrasting the lives of servants and masters ( Loving); workers and owners, set in a Birmingham iron foundry ( Living); and the different lives of the wealthy and the ordinary, ( Party Going).

                                  1 out of 5 stars Rubbish.......2006-09-24

Do NOT buy this book. It is an utter, irredeemable waste of time. Basically, to give the prospective reader an idea of what to expect, it's as if Henry Green had set down tape recorders in various rooms at different time periods, let them run, and then played them back and transcribed the parts he fancied. I can not convey how utterly boring these dialogues are. The modern reader will be surprised to know that what brought these books to the attention of people when they were published was sex. Not that there's any in here explicitly or implicitly. But there's certainly talk, talk, talk about it, which was a bit risqué at the time. So John Updike, the narrator-in-chief of adultery in America, writes an absurdly glowing introduction here in which he reveals that his favourite scene is the one in Party Going where Amela (Yes, that's how she spells her name) gets out of her bath and massages her breasts as if they were "puppies." This, dear reader, is the most explicit scene in the book. Well, let me, since I took the time to read them, make a few comments on each of the three books in this volume:

Loving-Is set in early WWII Ireland among the Protestant English gentry and their servants. What else can I say? There's nothing else to say because nothing of note happens, and the writing, again, is not writing, it's transcribed talking.---If you're interested in the decaying Protestant gentry in Ireland the book to read is Troubles by J.G. Farrell: A true classic with real writing that conveys the tragic and comedic aspects of this decay in virtuosic fashion.

Living-The worst - Set in industrial Birmingham where the tape recorder picks up no definite or indefinite articles (the previous reviewer has done a send-up of what you'll find here in his review); I don't know how I managed to slog through it.

Party Going - A rather silly group from the moneyed class wishes to go on holiday to the South of France, but, oh dear, the dratted English fog has shut down the train station and so they have to spend the night in a perfectly horrible hotel waiting for the fog to clear----Don't waste your time....Please read anything by P.G. Wodehouse instead of this tripe.

Which leaves me just to say, what? Oh yes, DON'T BOTHER WITH THESE CRASHINGLY DULL PERIOD PIECES! Life is just too short, and there are so many better works out there that cover this era delightfully.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Brum speak.......2003-05-12

Partly set among workers in foundry in Birmingham (Brum) England, and partly among top management in London. Parallel love affairs occur in each setting. Intrigues pit younger workers against older ones. Elderly owner of company is dying and son wants to take over. Work at foundry is horribly dangerous and highly skilled.
Interesting, and perhaps distracting, feature is use of Midland English. Happen author read DH Lawrence who wrote around same time. People in this part of England often leave out articles, such as "a" and "the". Green adopts mannerism, not only when transcribing speech of Birmingham characters but also in exposition parts. It gives narrative strange texture, especially in London scenes.
Book is my second Green (had read Blindness) and so far I'm not finding him great superlative talent but folks as know say both are early works and not typical. I'm not great fan of dialect writing with phonetic spelling. Updike wrote rave introduction to volume contains this along with "Loving" and "Party Going." Likes of VS Pitchett and Anthony Burgess said Green was greatest author of time.

                                        Book Description

For more than two decades, internationally renowned pioneer in energy medicine Caroline Myss has been studying how people use their personal power. Through her special brand of spiritual insight and intuition, her popular workshops, and her bestselling books, Myss has helped hundreds of thousands of people meet the lifelong challenge of managing their spiritual energy and improving their lives.

Now, in this inspiring new book, Myss expands her message about power in an entirely new spiritual direction. With characteristic originality, she explains how we become channels for divine grace and a conduit for miracles through kind, compassionate, generous actions or, as she calls them, invisible acts of power. When we act compassionately, without a private agenda or expectation of credit or reward, God works invisibly, anonymously through us. And as we move from visible acts, such as giving a friend a helping hand, to invisible acts, such as prayer and healing, we undergo a profound journey of personal empowerment.

Myss explores the seven stages of the practice of compassion and generosity and shows that the choice to do good, to act in service to others, is as essential to our physical and emotional health as it is to our intuitive development. In fact, she reveals, generosity is a biological and a spiritual necessity.

As she conveys these insights, Myss tells her trademark electrifying personal stories along with numerous others about life-changing acts of service, chosen from among more than twelve hundred letters that were sent to her Web site. The myriad simple but profound ways that people connect to create small miracles, gain a greater sense of spirituality, and transform their own -- and others' -- lives in an instant will inspire you to your own invisible acts of power...and attract them to you.

1 out of 5 stars Rambling, unstructured nonsense.......2007-05-15

This is the most rambling piece of nonsense I have ever listened to (listened to the book on tape).

The author seems extremely arrogant -- she makes a ton of assertions with absolutely no fact base (e.g., every prayer is answered, you absolutely can tell if there is a person in need nearby, even if you cannot see them). She seems to think she is a god or something - I found her tone to be very patronizing.

This whole book is based an e-mail solicitation that the author put out to receive examples of invisible acts of power. Then she builds this whole idea up as if she has some sort of blinding, inspirational insight -- it really is a bunch of useless ramble.

It seems that she just wanted the glory of writing another book so she tried to get some "filler" material.

After listening to the first CD, I could not take it any more, there was no structure to her thinking and nothing of practical use or inspiration.

I would not recommend this to anybody - as boring as it is, it is not even good for a sleeping aid, as the author's tone is so annoying.

3 out of 5 stars Caroline Myss is amazing.......2007-04-11

I love most of Caroline Myss's writing and some of it has been life changing for me. Particularly 'Why People don't heal' and 'Sacred Contracts'. This book was great but I have reservations because the christian element was a little too much for me. A good read though.

                                        2 out of 5 stars MAJOR REMIX.......2006-06-27

Review title says it all! If you've read any of her other stuff, this will be totally boring. She has explained most of the chakra stuff in her other books. If I had to read anyone else's chakra-related story, I was gonna scream!!

Can't think of any reason to purchase or read this one!

2 out of 5 stars Not as interesting........2006-03-11

I think of Caroline Myss' other two books as adding to my information and spiritual knowledge. This boook however does not have the same effect. It's main theme is to 'pay it forward'.

5 out of 5 stars Carolyn Myss gets it. . . she really gets it.......2006-01-26

This book is beautiful -- abundant with truth and inspiration. I can only imagine what the world would be like if everyone took the time to consider the concepts that Carolyn highlights in this work. Please do yourself a favor and read this book, regardless of where you are in your life.
