I recommend this book for all of my students who are planning to attend college. The book is comprehensive, easy to follow, and unlike other books on college it has handy examples of sample resumes, worksheets for listing college visits and contacts, sample questions for interviews, timelines for scholarships and applications, and a sample of a thank you note for recommendations. The book is easy to follow and is based on Mrs. VonGruben's own personal experiences with her children. The college industry has become a big business and wise students and parents need to explore all options. This book will help them to know when to begin the college planning process, how to go about it, and enable students and parents to make wise decisions regarding college.

Job-finding expert Richard H. Beatty approaches a job interview like a general planning a battle. He talks strategy, from preparation to planning to execution. The target: making a good impression. He provides tips on what to do to win the job and how to avoid making mistakes that doom the interview and plunge you into instant defeat. While some suggestions seem like common sense, you can't have too much of that in a competitive market. The book is particularly strong in its coverage of specific questions to anticipate and the types of responses to offer. We recommend this book to people who just showed up in the job market and to those in the early stages of waging this war. Most well-established job soldiers already command these skills - otherwise they'd be on the sidelines.

Great Stategies for Winning the Interview.......2000-01-27

This book is extremely helpful in formulating strategies designed to help you win in the interview. Particularly helpful were the "performance voids" strategy and the "perfect candidate" strategy. Both are powerful techniques for helping you turn the interview around! Also, the chapter on "damage control in the interview" shows you how to handle negative information and shift the negative into a positive! This alone is well worth the price of the book! This is definitely a "must read" for the serious job seeker who wants to end up with the job offer! Great book!

Excellent resource for all types of potential questions. Easy format to follow and practice with. Applicable to a wide variety of job classifications. Provides both confidence and self-esteem. Recommended to anyone who is weak in the interview phase of recruitment.

Shallow.......1999-02-10

This book of 224 could be condensed to 124 without losing anything but the author's repetition of certain phrases. Some of the strategies mentioned are worthwhile, if a bit common sense (i.e. don't say a weakness that will disqualify you from the job--duh!), but most of the book is fluff.

And the 500 questions? More like 30 or so. The author groups maybe 50 questions together at the start of each chapter, questions that are virtually identical ("What is your main weakness?", "Where do you see room for improvement in yourself?" "If I asked a coworker, what negative thing would he say about yourself?") and then a common strategy is proposed for all of them (which almost always consists of "don't say something that would disqualify you from the job."

If you've got a video camcorder (and who doesn't these days) and children, you've probably created hours of footage of your kids doing kid kinds of things. Yes, those videos are fun to look at (at least for a couple of hours), but the way I used to go about it wasn't a whole lot better than snapshots. It wasn't until I bought The Child's Annual Video Interview Kit that I began to realize the true power of my camcorder to create a record of my childrens' growth over the years. Beginning with my eldest daughter's 5th birthday, I used this well-thought-out script and detailed instructions (and tips on interviewing children) to create a series of annual 15-20 minute interviews, repeated at about the same time each year, all on a single videotape. She graduates high school next month, and her Annual Video Interviews bring laughter and tears to my wife's eyes (OK, to mine too) every time we watch it. The Kit is well-written, easy to understand, and enabled us to create a true family heirloom that her children and grandchildren will be able to enjoy some day.

Working a full-time job and an being a partner in an upstart publishing house, I don't have a lot of time to plan a full-out strategy for interviewing, the Interview Survival Kit saved me time and a lot of stress with the great flashcards! I was able to (literally) whip through the items I really wanted to focus on when going through preliminary phone interviews with prospective consultants and interns since we should both be focused on the same things. I found it any easy way for me to stay focused and keep the conversations on track and informative. I recommend these highly to everyone I meet!

For a perfect summer read try picking up an old favorite... this collection of the work of Saki (real name: Hector Hugh Munro) includes over 130 short stories, three novels and three plays and sports an introduction by Noel Coward. Though written 100 years ago, this vast body of work is amazingly fresh and contemporary. Many of the stories are under four pages long, but they manage to paint amusing pictures of the privileged class as seen through the eyes of an obviously gay, brilliant and somewhat bored young man who uses a sharp knife to pry up the upper crust and expose what's beneath. Master of the Sublime - H.H. Munro - aka Saki.......2006-11-04

Saki is the consummate stylist and chronicler of a stuffy Victorian England nearing the end of its reign and world dominance. He savors the comedy of manners with all its many class-based restrictions and inbred peculiarities and finds ways to highlight--through ironic twists of fate--the inherent and underlying pathos of a people so stuck on themselves they frequently are tripped up on their own vanities.Therein lies the "beauty" of a Saki short story: he fleshes out the quirks and peccadillos of human nature--its pomp and its farcical facets--and we come away the better (and ennobled) for it. Saki (H.H. Munro) writes with a facility and style that guides the reader unerringly to the surprise denouement in which propriety is set on its head. His bitingly clever turns of phrase are made bearable by his eagerness to challenge and thwart the norms of society.

What Frothy Fun!.......2005-12-18

If you like your reading to be effervescent with a bit of vinegar thrown in for effect, look no further. Saki is hilarious at his best--which is most of the time. His stories of the misadventures of his alter-ego Reginald are unsurpassed.

"The Open Window" is here-it is considered by Saki aficionados to be his best story and who am I to argue. On first reading, it has the same effect as a pail of ice water - a shock to the system, but bracing!

And for the perfect practical joke, described deliciously, do read, "Reginald's Christmas Revel." You will never look at a paper bag in quite the same way, thereafter.

Sadly, his life was cut short by the Great War. One of his own bon mots will say it all: "To die before being painted by Sargent is to go to heaven prematurely." Amen.

Precursors to Twilight Zone.......2005-07-29

I never tire of Saki/HH Munro (1870-1916). His brilliant short stories pack so much in so few pages and usually have wonderful twists or surprises. They are timeless, but take no time to devour. The joy of this collection is that, with a glance at the Table of Contents (for length), you can pretty much find a tale you will be able read in one sitting, no matter how much or little time you might have available. Each time you pick up the book, you will be amused and entertained. Favorites will most likely change as you read new stories, novelettes and plays. And there are many great bedtime stories for young and old (but read them yourself before sharing with little ones -- some may seem rather scary and/or innapropriate for them, though many others are probably fine for anyone - let each care-giver decide for themselves!). I recall "The Open Window" was my introduction to Saki, and that was in my third grade reader (so I guess I was about eight or so), and I thereafter often took out his works from the library, at least until just after college. Nearly thirty years later, I now have the complete collection to enjoy, and even those tales I had read before, still remain as fresh as ever.

A delightful collection of stories.......2006-04-22

Hector Hugh Munro, alias "Saki", exposes with sharp wit all the absurdities and hypocrisies found in the country houses and clubs of the upper classes in the 1910s. Some stories are witty, others macabre and acid because the author drives a knife into the upper crust of the English Edwardian society. And the characters of the self-possessed Clovis or the vain and stylish Reginald are simply unforgettable.
