Managing Behavior in Organizations (4th Edition)
ASIN: 0874254736 |
Book Description
Learn what skills are required to be a successful leader in today's business environment. The Competent Leader concentrates on the interpersonal skills required to be a great leader. Most people in supervisory, managerial, or other positions of leadership have exceptionally strong technical skills but are not equally strong in their interpersonal skills. This is because most people are hired and promoted based on how well they perform the "operational" functions of a position. This book will aid both new and experienced leaders in concentrating on the necessary skills to fine-tune their relationship-building skills. The Competent Leader is written in an easy-to-understand "how-to" format, it offers action planning guides and assessments which help transfer newly learned skills back to the workplace.
Book Description
Becoming a Conflict Competent Leader combines research, conceptual models, practitioner experience, and stories that highlight the core conflict competencies. The book underscores the importance for leaders to develop the critical skills they need to help them, their colleagues, and their organizations deal more effectively with conflict and move their organizations forward.
Customer Reviews:
Behavior is the key.......2007-09-15
Fair warning to the reader! I work with the Conflict Dynamics Profile 360 assessment (CDP), which is the core of this book's approach to conflict. Having said that, I also want you to know that the reason I work with the CDP is because it provides a research-based behavioral approach to managing conflict.
The body of work in this book was developed in response to data showing that the most commonly low-rated behavior for people in leadership development programs was conflict management. Often the individual receiving such feedback had no idea what behaviors were leading to those low ratings. Conflict Dynamics clarifies the behaviors that escalate vs those that manage conflict, so that the reader can identify what behaviors to change.
Whereas other conflict management approaches focus on general styles toward conflict (i.e. competitive, collaborative, etc.) or individual personality differences that lead to conflict (nurturing vs. driving, for example), this book clearly describes behaviors, regardless of styles and individual differences. Filled with well written scenarios depicting the different conflict behaviors - both constructive and destructive - this shows readers how they may contribute to negative conflict situations and - more importantly - how they can move conflict situations to positive issue-focused resolution rather than destructive person-focused escalation.
No matter how this book is used, the reader will find that it contributes to growth as a leader in the real world.
Understanding a conflict situation.......2007-09-03
Conflict is a normal part of relationships, and thus its management is an essential leadership skill. Precipitated by an event and/or hot button, the initiated conflict is either escalated by `destructive' responses or de-escalated by `constructive' responses according to the Dynamic Conflict Model introduced by the authors. A conflict competent leader understands this model and the elements of conflict. By using self-awareness and self-control, and by understanding conflict styles and behaviors, the conflict competent leader is able to make a choice in their responses.
According to the authors, emotions play a key role in escalating conflict and there are five levels related to conflict situations:
* Level One: Differences
* Level Two: Misunderstandings
* Level Three: Disagreements
* Level Four: Discord
* Level Five: Polarization
One way to lessen emotionally driven destructive responses to conflict is to emphasize a positive emotional tone by managing effectively five core concerns:
* Appreciation - acknowledging the value of people
* Affiliation - developing connections with another person
* Autonomy - respecting the freedom of people to make decisions
* Status - recognizing the specialty of others
* Role - making sure that people have a clear, meaningful purpose
To promote constructive responses to conflict:
* Stay calm
* Encourage civility, fairness, and safety
* Use teaching and coaching
* Provide learning opportunities
* Embrace constructive conflict
The authors end the book by promoting the building of conflict competent organizations, including the adaptation of an Integrated Conflict Management System.
From an individual conflict management perspective, the book serves as a reasonable `how-to' guide for resolving a specific situation. From an organizational perspective, it misses the importance of building common purpose and shared goals as a performance foundation for conflict avoidance as well as conflict resolution. Dennis DeWilde, author of The Performance Connection
Superb, Accessible Resource.......2007-07-18
I have used the materials in this excellent primer to help senior management understand the immense internal and external impacts that unresolved conflict have on their organizations. Identifying how people actually behave during conflicts (and can improve) is a major step forward for creating better workplaces.
The divisions of behavioral responses and the familiar and enlightening examples used, help everyone learn how to manage their constructive and destructive and active and passive actions. The overall framework serves both diagnostic and monitoring functions for determining what needs to be done to improve workplace dynamics. The inclusion of hot buttons is ingenious as it allows everyone to see their own vulnerable areas and to prepare for more thoughtful responses.
I'm recommending this superb resource to all my workplace clients. Some have been using the Conflict Dynamics Profiles to help them and their employees learn to discuss and manage the differences that too often lead to unresolved conflicts as well as to poor business practices.
A conceptually sound and broadly applicable approach to conflict. .......2007-06-19
Runde and Flanagan present a convincing argument for the benefits of increasing the conflict competency of leaders. They then proceed to describe a research-based approach that allows leaders to increase self awareness and skill in managing conflict. Leaders and aspiring leaders will find the book filled with practical information to support their individual development. They conclude with a description of how leaders can devise an "Integrated Conflict Management System" that has the potential to transform any organization. Becoming a Conflict Competent Leader is a must-read for coaches and OD professionals.
Outstanding! .......2007-05-13
Tim Flanagan and Craig Runde have written an outstanding book for anyone who needs to deal with and manage conflict. The extensive research and academic integrity give the book credibility and authenticity. And yet, the book is loaded with both business and personal examples, which give it a "real world" flavor and feel. The section and chapter summaries add to the organization and understanding of key concepts. But, don't just read the summaries. You'll miss out on the entertaining "stories" which the authors relate to this serious topic.

Book Description
In the late 1950s, crowds massed to see a new spectacular and expensive instrument for British science. The Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope built on the Cheshire plains could be seen for miles around, but was equally visible displayed in documentary film, newspaper reports, and public lectures.
Science and Spectacle relates the construction of the telescope to the politics and culture of postwar Britain. From radar and atomic weapons, to the Festival of Britain and, later, Harold Wilson's rhetoric of scientific revolution, science formed a cultural resource from which postwar careers and a national identity could be built. The Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope was at once a symbol of British science and a much needed prestigious project for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, but it also raised questions regarding the proper role of universities as sites for scientific research.

Book Description
This authoritative, timely, and comprehensively referenced compendium on the bacteriophages explores current views of how viruses infect bacteria. In combination with classical phage molecular genetics, new structural, genomic, and single-molecule technologies have rendered an explosion in our knowledge of phages. Bacteriophages, the most abundant and genetically diverse type of organism in the biosphere, were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century and enjoyed decades of used as anti-bacterial agents before being eclipsed by the antibiotic era. Since 1988, phages have come back into the spotlight as major factors in pathogenesis, bacterial evolution, and ecology. This book reveals their compelling elegence of function and their almost inconceivable diversity. Much of the founding work in molecular biology and structural biology was done on bacteriophages. These are widely used in molecular biology research and in biotechnology, as probes and markers, and in the popular method of assesing gene expression.

Book Description
The Marquis de Sade, vilified by respectable society from his own time through ours, apotheosized by Apollinaire as "the freest spirit that has yet existed," wrote The 120 Days of Sodom while imprisoned in the Bastille. An exhaustive catalogue of sexual aberrations and the first systematic exploration-a hundred years before Krafft-Ebing and Freud-of the psychology of sex, it is considered Sade's crowning achievement and the cornerstone of his thought. Lost after the storming of the Bastille in 1789, it was later retrieved but remained unpublished until 1935.
In addition to The 120 Days, this volume includes Sade's "Reflections on the Novel," his play Oxtiem, and his novella Ernestine. The selections are introduced by Simone de Beauvoir's landmark essay "Must We Burn Sade?" and Pierre Klossowski's provocative "Nature as Destructive Principle." "Imperious, choleric, irascible, extreme in everything, with a dissolute imagination the like of which has never been seen, atheistic to the point of fanaticism, there you have me in a nutshell, and kill me again or take me as I am, for I shall not change."-From Sade's Last Will and Testament
Customer Reviews:
Worth picking up, but not for long, romantic nights...........2007-08-10
I grew up with this book around the family campfire....actually, they probably would have burned the damn thing. Anyhoozle, the actual book, 120 Days of Sodom, is not really finished. It was a first draft that de Sade composed in the Bastille for 37 days, and then was thought lost after the Bastille was stormed (de Sade was NOT in the Bastille at the time). Luckily, it was found again, and published properly in 1935 by Maurice Heine. There is some great writing in The 120 Days of Sodom, mostly in the introduction (the opening paragraph is prophetic in how it describes war and corruption by governments). When de Sade starts with the actual days (he only got as far as 37), it gets very tedious, repetitive, and downright disgusting (de Sade is obsessed with coprophilia here, which is known as "water sports" nowadays). The rest of the book is just a catalogue of tortures (some of which are shocking even today). It's hard to recommend the book, but if you are interested in de Sade, and as a historical document, you should. This edition has a great number of extras. Included here is Simone de Beauvoir's excellent, very well known essay "Must We Burn Sade?" (she says no), and Pierre Klossowski's provocative essay Nature as Destructive Principle. Also included is a hilarious rant by de Sade against the literary critic Villeterque for his review of de Sade's Les Crimes de L'amour (and Villeterque's original review). This is good for de Sade's admirers, and history buffs. Others, uh, no.
Sades a genius.......2006-12-22
The sex is the most unimportant part of any work by Sade. Its simply something he probably did out of boredom, being in jail half the time and everything. His long polemics on sin and the attainment of temporal power make him one of western civilizations great and most under appreciated philosophers. He argues that only the good die young, who could criticize him for stating such an obvious fact. He blasts the universe for it ceasless torment of the innocent;usurpassed as a writer, his repetitions must be forgiven. He was a monster in real life, true but that has no bearing on the truth of his thesis and the power of his logic.
STOP BEING CLOSED-MINDED!!!.......2006-12-08
I have read numerous reviews of Marquis De Sade's 120 Days of Sodom that condemn the book for its HIGHLY graphic sexual content. However, this is my favorite book ever written for that exact reason. Sade crossed the lines repeatedly to make us question! He wanted us to question ourselves, question others, and question our own desires.
The reason he is so graphic in the book is directly related to every person's own desire. The sexual boundaries are crossed because it is to make you (the reader) question your sexual desires of others. Is that normal? Is it accepted by society?
Personally, I think Sade is a genius in that he can make 1,000 people hate him, and then even more love him. When you purchase this book and begin reading it, think about what you're reading and WHY he wrote what he wrote. This book is for highly intellectual people or people that can think on an intellectual level. Don't buy it if you're not willing to think about what you've read and be open-minded enough to accept what the Divine Marquis has "suggested".
120 Days of Boredom.......2006-10-17
Since two of my favorite filmmakers name De Sade their source of inspiration and admit his influence (Luis Bunuel quotes "120 Days of Sodom" in his "Age of Gold" and Jan Svankmajer was inspired by his writings in his brilliant "Conspirators of Pleasure"), I decided to read "120 Days of Sodom". I tried. I really did and I went through first forty or so pages of "120 Days of Sodom" but it should be called "120 Days of Boredom". I stopped. I could not read it because it is not the novel really rather a catalogue of disgusting. The main characters have been introduced in the beginning as the fully developed monsters. Their victims just stayed that - the victims. There is no plot, no intrigue, and no development, just the endless loop of rapes, tortures, and murders. Yes, I understand that it is a satire and the absolute power corrupts absolutely but reading the book is a torture of boredom. Did I miss anything?
Serial Killer's Fantasy.......2006-08-02
I was reading an interview with serial-killer Richard Ramirez (the night stalker)and in it he talks about this book and De Sade in general. He was reading Justine at the time the article was written and I can't help but wonder why death-row inmates are allowed access to this type of reading material. I can see why he is so fasinated by this book - it reads like a serial killer's to-do list. Very sick stuff.

Another fine mess.......2007-07-28
This novel is such a mess that it is unworthy of serious comment. Rather, it calls to mind 2 questions:
(1) How on earth did this ever get published?
(2) What tasteless literary jury gave this an edgar for a first novel?
Don't waste your time on this. I pushed myself to read about 100 pages of it and it never got any better.
A good FIRST book. .......2007-04-29
It's his first book dude. It's a good first try.
not best work.......2006-11-16
In spite of enjoying most Patterson fiction and in spite of enjoying Will Patton readings of contemporary authors, this set is a dud. Not Patterson's best work and even Will Patton's reading cannot save this from being a work best not listened to in traffic or while operating heavy machinery. ZZZZZ.
The Thomas Berryman Number.......2006-11-05
I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as others by this author. I was a bit glad when I finished reading it.
Why Didn't I Listen to the other reviews!!!.......2005-09-05
Not much else I can really say. Read the other reviews posted and that sums it up. Unreadable. I don't think that the 'language' in this book was meant to be Southern style talk, but more like an ill, stereotypical attempt at ebonics. (This trend continues on in Patterson's writing career as those of you who have read every Alex Cross novel know what I mean.)
I thought I was going to take a shot at all of Patterson's books since they are such basic 1-2 day reads and generally keep my interest. Those plans progressively changed as I moved along in the Cross novels and 'Berryman' may just prevent me from ever picking up one of his books again.
