A Step-by-Step Guide for Building Innovative Capacity in Organizations
"Practical in so many ways, this book should top your reading chart if you are at all interested in the business of being more innovative— or coaching others. I use the term — business because innovation is no longer a soft skill, but one that drives organizational success."
— Dr. Mitchell Kusy, coauthor of Fast Forward Leadership
This definitive guide for building innovative capacity in organizations teaches you how to create an environment that fosters creativity, innovation, and risk taking. Based on the work of Richard E. Byrd, a pioneer in the field of organization development, this book includes an assessment tool for determining what drives creativity and risk taking and offers a four-step process for building innovative capacity in individuals.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough and Practical.......2002-09-24
Byrd and Brown show how innovation can help organizations grow and how the lack of innovation can stifle companies. Recognizing that it takes all types of people to have a functioning organization, this book helps individuals, groups and organizations recognize their innovative strengths and weaknesses. Equally important are the stop signs that inhibit organizational growth. Many people talk about the value of innovation in organizations but this book takes that discussion much further, defining and thoroughly analyzing innovation and, more importantly, providing the reader with tools that can be easily applied.

You better have the time!.......2005-01-24
For the first 93 pages, the "Plan" sounds pretty good, then we get to the menus!
Ironically, just after writing "Having been an avid reader of diet books for many years, the thing that I found most frustrating was having to "wade" through 16 pages of information fo find out what to have for breakfast", the author does just that. Pages and pages and pages of menus and recipes that only a person who has no job and no life could possibly have time to shop for and prepare week after week.
This book was written in 1990 and has, apparently, never been updated and there have certainly been scientific breakthoughs and changes in the last 15 years. Skip this one and get "Dieting for Dummies".
Excellent.......2000-01-26
I have used this book as a reference in my nutrition education classes at a large hospital center. It is easy to understand and gives the reader practical advice on reducing body fat healthfully. I highly recommend it for anyone truly serious about losing weight.
Lost weight PERMANENTLY w/ great health benefits!!.......1999-10-06
So sensible and easy to follow!! Explains, in a way you can easily understand that the problem with over-weight has everything to do with biology, not willpower. Correcting body chemistry to end cravings is very important. I lost over 70 pounds and have kept it off for 7 years without a struggle. In addition I had severe health problems that I lost with those 70 pounds. This book has been on the market for some time now and it is truly way ahead of its time. I've never been so happy and felt this good--seems almost too good to be true considering that I had been a "seasoned dieter" for many years before reading this book. It saved my sanity and my life!!
This is a well thought out plan that is easy to follow........1999-02-07
When I saw that I was getting a paunch I looked for ways to help me lose weight. I was turned off by diets that banned one thing or another. In this plan Jeanne Rhodes spells out in a very clear and understanding way why most diets ultimately fail. I saw that, in my effort to lose weight, I was cutting back in all the wrong places. The author lays out menus to be followed for the first few weeks and explains how you plan your meals after that. The menus that are presented are not much different from what I would normally eat. There were some small changes. (I developed a taste for yogurt, for one thing!) The exercises, which are necessary for long lasting weight loss, are relatively easy and are explained well starting from the warmup right through to the not be be left out stretching exercises at the end. Yes, there is a strong urge to want to cut back on the routines and the author addresses that point in several parts of the book. The results will not be fast. If you're expecting to lose 10 pounds a week look elsewhere. I found that I was losing two to three pounds per week and keeping it off. It's better to take six months or ever a year to lose the weight that stays off than to lose it fast and gain it back with interest. The one drawback in the book was in finding some of the supplements and mixes mentioned in the recipes. I couldn't find some of the items but was able to substitute newer products that are on the market today. As with any weight control plan, it's always advisable to check with your doctor to be sure that it's safe for you.

Book Description
Galaxy groups and clusters provide excellent laboratories for studying galaxy properties in different environments and at different look-back times. In particular, the recent detections of high-redshift cluster candidates, only possible with the current high-technology instrumentation, add a new dimension to the problem. Along with the ever increasing computing power and sophisticated algorithms to model clusters of galaxies, it may help us to understand the origins of today's groups and clusters, as well as of their member galaxies. These workshop proceedings provide a snapshot of the current research in this subject, covering the observations, theory and numerical simulations relevant to galaxy evolution in groups and clusters. In this book, intended primarily to researchers in the field, particular emphasis is given to the recent impressive progress in the field, on important new results, and on the future prospects and open questions to be tackled.

Book Description
For every galaxy in the field or in clusters, there are about three galaxies in groups. The Milky Way itself resides in a group, and groups can be found at high redshift. The current generation of 10-m class telescopes and space facilities allows the observation of the members of nearby groups with exquisite detail, and their properties can be correlated with the global properties of their host group. Groups in the local Universe offer us the chance to study galaxies in environments characterized by strong interactions. In the cosmological context, groups trace large-scale structures better than clusters, and the evolution of groups and clusters appears to be related. All these aspects of research on groups of galaxies are summarized in this book written by scientists working in various fields.

Book Description
The interfacial behaviour of surfactants and proteins, and their mixtures, is of importance in a wide range of areas such as food technology, detergency, cosmetics, coating processes, biomedicine, pharmacy and biotechnology. Methods such as surface and interfacial tension measurements and interfacial dilation and shear rheology characterise the relationships between these interfacial properties and the complex behaviour of foams and emulsions is established. Recently-developed experimental techniques, such as FRAP which enable the measurement of molecular mobility in adsorption layers, are covered in this volume. The development of theories to describe the thermodynamic surface state or the exchange of matter for proteins and protein/surfactant mixtures is also described.
Features of this book:
• Reflects the state-of-the-art research and application of protein interfacial layers rather than a snapshot of only some recent developments.
• Emphasis is placed on experimental details as well as recent theoretical developments.
• New experimental techniques applied to protein interfacial layers are described, such as FRAP or ADSA, or rheological methods to determine the mechanical behaviour of protein-modified interfaces.
• A large number of practical applications, ranging from emulsions relevant in food technology for medical problems such as lung surfactants, to the characterisation of foams intrinsic to beer and champagne production.
The book will be of interest to research and university institutes dedicated to interfacial studies in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, medicine and food engineering. Industrial departments for research and technology in food industry, pharmacy, medicine and brewery research will also find this volume of value.

Book Description
This book opens with a description of fundamental aspects of protein adsorption to surfaces, a phenomenon that plays a key role in biotechnological applications, especially at solid-liquid interfaces. Presented here are methods for studying adsorption kinetics and conformational changes such as optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy (OWLS). Also described are sensitive bench techniques for measuring the orientation and structure of proteins at solid-liquid interfaces, including total internal reflection ellipsometry (TIRE), dual polarisation interferometry (DPI) and time of flight - secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF–SIMS). A model study of fibronectin at polymer surfaces is included, as are studies using microporous membranes and textiles with immobilized enzymes for large-scale applications. Biocompatibility, anti-fouling properties and surface modification to modulate the adsorption and activity of biomolecules are among the other topics addressed in this invaluable book.

Book Description
This book gives an overview of gene transfer and stability in those aquatic and terrestrial environments where bacteria and fungi can survive and interact genetically. It examines the role played by sex between microbes in the evolution of populations and their survival. Special emphasis is placed on methodology, including the analysis by novel techniques of genetic material extracted directly from soils, rivers and lakes. The natural spread of antibiotic resistance and the safe use of genetically manipulated microbes are matters of considerable scientific, medical and public concern upon which the investigations presented here have direct bearing. This unique collection will be of value to specialist researchers in applied microbiology, ecology and biotechnology as well as biomedical scientists interested in the environmental risks of genetic engineering.

Debasing, but not necessarily limited to Southerners..........2007-09-26
I find it rather humorous to note that not only do the majority of the people getting offended by this work of literary brilliance hail from south of the Mason-Dixon, but also that no one seems to have hit on his primary intention. It's been how many years now and we still can't forgive the poor man? Tsk, tsk. At any rate, if you're interested in a book that you can read at face value and take a story and then go on to another book, look elsewhere. Caldwell's always-controversial characters, particularly the men, represent not a backwards view of the South or an attept to persist a stereotype, but the abstraction that humans are little more than hairless animals. This work in particular needs a lot more study than the casual reader is usually willing to give it. Someone else said it earlier: if you want a pretty picture, read Steinbeck. If you want to take a look at the true, ugly, primal nature of man, pick this book up, especially if you're writing a paper...lots of material here!
Depressing, Disappointing, and Depraved.......2007-06-15
Don't waste your time on this book!
While I certainly didn't expect it to be cheerful, given its look at the life of subsistance farmers in the depression in the deep south, I was unprepared for the utter lack of redeeming quality in any of the characters, the plot, the themes, or the writing.
The characters in this book are utterly selfish, coarse, and debased. They are barely human beings, seeking only to satisfy animal needs. They kill and maim and destroy thoughtlessly. While out on a joy ride, two of the characters kill a man; they later kill a family member. There is no remorse. The characters repeatedly make fun of physical deformities. They revel in destruction of property. They're racist and ignorant.
This could be thought of as a type of satire, a hyper-exaggeration to produce comedy (as others reviewers have suggested) except that there is a problem with that. The writing, 99% of the time, isn't funny. Humor comes from the same word as "human" and with such grim material, there's little there to recommend it.
Still trying to purge this from my memory (sadly hard to do) and I'd suggest you pass this one by. Literature is suppose to uplift, or if it cannot uplift, it should educate, or illuminate. This just debases. Read Steinbeck instead.
Tobacco Road.......2007-06-14
I'm not easily offended, but found Tobacco Road obscene. Not for the sex, for the protrayal of poor, white Southerners without compassion, or, in my opinion, any real understanding. Is making the same joke about physical deformities again and again and again satire or even good dark comedy? Not in my book. In well-drawn humor we are able to see our own wekanesses reflected and recognize the human link between ourselves and the most foolish. But Caldwell's characters are so devoid of humanity that poking fun of them just seems juvenile and cruel. Additionally, I found whole passages of the book poorly written and repetitious. I confess to being a Southerner and from poor stock and perhaps that colors my view. But I love Faulkner and O'Conner. I think Caldwell is best forgotten.
Don't Miss Erskine Caldwell.......2007-06-14
It's been a lot of years since I read "Tobacco Road," but I thoroughly enjoyed it. "This Very Earth" and "God's Little Acre" are two other great reads. These are all short novels but very rewarding.
masterpiece of rural american humor........2007-02-06
i was not prepared for how outrageously funny this book was. I didn't know a thing about erskine caldwell other than that this book was on modern library's top 100 novels of the 20th century list. considering many of the other books on that list, i figured this might perhaps be a bit on the dry side. what a great surprise. this is an american comedy classic. a look at the underbelly of the southern economic system in the early 20th century, to be sure: this is dark humor. but mr caldwell makes it a hoot, even as you cringe. never have i enjoyed the ignorance of others as i did in this vastly enjoyable book.

Book Description
In 1795 the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill became the first state university in the United States to open its doors to students. As the celebrated institution prepared to observe its bicentennial, William Snider provided a rich chronicle of its history.
Snider describes the signal events of the university's first two hundred years: the chartering and siting of a charming campus and village; the trying years of the Civil War and Reconstruction, during which the University closed its doors; the period of remarkable renewal in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; the achievement of national and international stature in the 1920s and 1930s; the challenging 1960s; and the period of expansion and innovation in the late 1970s and 1980s.
Throughout, Snider provides fine portraits of individuals prominent in the life of the university, from William R. Davie and Joseph Caldwell to Harry Woodburn Chase, Frank Porter Graham, and William C. Friday. His book evokes for all who have been part of the Chapel Hill community memories of their own associations with the campus and a sense of the greater history of the institution of which they were a part.

As the first public university in the United States, UNC truly served as a "light on the hill" in advocating for public higher education. Tar Heels will love learning about the history of their illustrious university and all its traditions and legacies. This book is historically accurate and intellectually provocative, while still compelling and interesting for leisure reading.
This is a great gift for any Tar Heel!

Book Description
A major new biography, Erskine Caldwell: The Journey from Tobacco Road presents the fascinating life and times of a prolific and profoundly influential -- yet nearly forgotten -- figure in American literature.
In the 1930S and '40s, Erskine Caldwell's impassioned work dealing with the Southern poor -- most notably, the novels Tobacco Road and God's Little Acre -- earned him wide critical acclaim. Although many Southerners reviled him for his brutal exposes of their region, literary scholars at the time ranked him alongside Fitzgerald, Wolfe, and Steinbeck. William Faulkner thought him one of America's five greatest novelists, and as late as 1960, Caldwell was under consideration for the Nobel Prize.
Although Caldwell worked for years in abject poverty, eventually his commercial success matched his lofty critical standing. The dramatic adaptation of Tobacco Road became the biggest hit in Broadway history, and paperback editions of Caldwell's novels -- frequently under attack for their explicit sexuality -- sold in record numbers around the globe. By the 1960s, in fact, his publicists declared him "The World's Best-Selling Novelist," and by 1970 he had written more than one hundred short stories and twenty-five novels. This should have secured Caldwell an enduring place in America's literary history, but today he is largely forgotten, one of the great disappearing acts in American letters.
Caldwell's personal life was no less complicated than his professional one, and Dan B. Miller's evocation of it is uncommonly subtle and provocative. Lonely and isolated as a boy; Caldwell treated his own children with alternating neglect and brutality. He was married four times (once to the photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White), had a number of extramarital affairs, drank heavily, and was prone to violent mood swings. Yet Caldwell could be extraordinarily generous, gentle, and funny, a man of startling inconsistencies and startling energy.
The first scholar to explore the entire (and voluminous) collection of Caldwell material at Dartmouth College Library, Dan B. Miller blends narrative grace, keen psychological insight, and dispassionate analysis to trace the tumultuous arc of a true American original and the vibrant literary culture in which he lived.
Customer Reviews:
The Establishment can destroy you..........2003-11-08
For some time, I wondered why such an important chronicler of the uderprivileged people of the South ,who was recognized and read as comparable to Steinbeck, should be pushed aside to the point he is almost forgotten today.By the early 1960,s,between anthologies, novels, travelogues, and other nonfiction monographs,he had published thirty-eight books, and his domestic sales had reached 55 million copies. His works were translated into dozens of languages. He was among the world,s best selling authors. So,what happened?
Miller,s book shows how he was really not part of the "system" .It was the millions of readers who liked his work;thc critics couldn't stand him.
The critics and literary establishment won out and have pushed his work into obscurity...for now, anyway.
I am surprised that the author Miller, is so young. One day with the help of people like him,Caldwell may well become known again.
An excellent book if you want to know the whole story.
A REVEALING PORTRAIT.......2002-01-27
In the thirties critics acclaimed Erskine Caldwell as one of the most influential writers of his time. His books sold in the millions and his play, Tobacco Road (based on the novel), had an unprecedented record run across the nation. By the time the sixties emerged, Caldwell falls into obscurity, disdained by the critics and forgotten in the canon of southern literature.
Caldwell's Icarus-like rise to fame and descent into obscurity is the catalyst which inspired Dan Miller to explore one of the south's most prolific writers. What was behind the man who was so passionate in his work yet ended up destroying his professional career, his marriages and his relationships with his children.
The Journey from Tobacco Road takes a microscopic look at the forces which shaped and made Caldwell the writer that he is. Born of educated parents who were members of a fundamentalist presbyterian sect, we find a man full of contradictions. His parents had formal education. Their son never graduated from high school (or any school for that matter) and was a poor writer and reader. Their denomination, The Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church, was highly fundamental yet Caldwell's father had a great passion to confront the injustice of poor and Black people. His passion was transferred over to his son who became the extentsion of his cause for justice.
You will come across layers of complexities of Erskine who was controlling in all of his relationships with his wives and daughters. His obsessive need for control extended itself into the lives of his children to the point of abuse. Yet despite these tendancies Caldwell reached the hearts and minds of his readers in his depiction of the southern poor.
Miller has given the reader a revealing portrait of a man who was at the top of his literary popularity only to fall in obscurity. We are shown the elements of why this happened and can see that the same trap is set for writers who become popular but are spurned by the academic literary community. Caldwell's journey is an interesting one as he goes through the school of hard knocks only to rise a winner. Miller's biography is clear and concise. He doesn't put Caldwell on a pedestle but he reminds us this is an author who shouldn't be ignored. You will enjoy this biography.
Miller's concern about Caldwell's obscurity is not to be ignored. Recently I sat on a class in southern literature. When I read the syllabus, I saw the conspicuous absence of Caldwell's name. On approaching the teacher, I asked why and she immediately became embarassed and said she that Caldwell's name had mistakenly been dropped while editing the syllabus. Miller's book is certainly one we need to remind us of the life and contributions of this man of southern literature.
Great Biography, Best Selling american author of his time........1997-01-24
Dr. Miller tells the interesting truth behind one of the best selling authors of all time. Caldwell's life growing up poor in the deep south set the tone for what his work will become in the upcoming years. Miller, a student of David Donald (2 time pulitzer prize winner, "Look Homeward Angel:Bio of Thomas Wolfe", and official Lincoln biographer) at Harvard University, gives the reader a complete picture of an author who has been forgotten in time. Caldwell's gritty, often pornographic style has been belittled by todays critics, but Miller shows Caldwell was more than a pulp writer, he was a complex man, with a simple style.
A must read.

Book Description
Archie "A.B." and Ida Clements both grew up poor on farms in rural Southside Virginia, spending their formative years in the deprivation of the Great Depression, and their early adulthood during the heartache of World War II. Tom Brokaw called theirs "The Greatest Generation." Moses and Connie Clements just call them Mama and Daddy. In the world of A.B. and Miss Ida, integrity is the greatest virtue, economy is a way of life, and hard work is mandatory. The tales they have to tell are, in turn, inspirational, heartbreaking, and thoroughly entertaining. Their lives are a testament to the desire and force of will it takes to make a living in the good black soil of Tidewater, Virginia. Any Road: The Story of a Virginia Tobacco Farm is a series of short stories inspired by the lives of author Connie Clements Ellison's parents. Archie and Ida lived their lives based on faith, honesty, hard work, and humor as they strived for-and eventually achieved-the American Dream.

A wonderful southern family and community..........2007-01-12
What a wonderful story of southern values and a tribute to a family life style that is a thing of the past. If your Dad ever told you that "you ain't got a lick of sense" or that "you ain't never going to amount to nothing" you will both laugh and cry with Connie as she shares her families' love and devotion to each other, their family farm and to their treasured rural culture.
