Maybe a bit too ambitious; some great pearls though.......2000-11-22

For us layman physics enthusiasts, the Holy Grail is a book that deals with theoretical physics at the mathematical level but doesn't require an amount of math beyond basic calculus and trigonometry. On the surface, Steve Adams has provided such a book, although it may be that trying to reduce all physics to such a level of comprehension may not be possible.

Penned by a well-credentialed British science educator, FRONTIERS ambitiously sets out to survey some of the most difficult-to-understand areas of physics. Some experimental physics is covered, but theory gets the lion's share of treatment. I have read a lot of physics books aimed at general readers, and this is by far the most challenging and takes the most time to get through. However, a patient reader will be rewarded with new insights across the whole spectrum of physics. Profusely illustrated with diagrams, the book gives many unique examples of concepts in an attempt to make them understandable. Some examples fall flat, but most do score right on target.

Mathematical examples are relegated to so-called "maths boxes," and these are the weakest parts of the book. Variables are often undefined, and steps are so flagrantly skipped that some examples remind me of a classmate who answered an organic synthesis question with the word "POOF!" between the reactant and the product. So, I really didn't get much out of the maths boxes, but the rest of the book is well-written and at least as easy to follow as the abstruse subject matter allows. I will say that after reading this book, I am finally--after decades--starting to sort of understand particle physics, if only at the level it takes to appreciate the humongous intellect of the professional physicists who work in this highly abstract area.

I appreciate the author's attention to detail by including the glossaries. While Glossaries 6 through 9 are quite useful, the others are really more in the line of textbook material, requiring fairly advanced math to understand them.

I read this book cover-to-cover, but is also would be a nice reference, so I am going to keep it readily available to answer future musings.

The "Product Details" Amazon lists for this book which states "Haynes Manuals, Inc.; 1 edition (September 25, 1998)" is WRONG. Haynes is a different publisher and their 1998 publication is a totally different book. This Chilton book is copyrighted 1994 and is, consequently, 13 years out of date as of this review (August 2007). I verified this by ISBN number to a copy I checked out from my local library. Further, 1994 is the current edition listed on Chilton's website. So, if your engine is newer than 1994, the data will not be current.

That said, this seems to be the most detailed and useful small engine repair book I have found. It may still be useful for some later models that may not have changed much. As previous reviewers have recommended, check your local library copy to see if the information might apply to your engine.

My husband was very excited to get this book - now if he would just repair all of the small engine things we have to be fixed it would be great!

I can't bring myself to be as harsh as the one star reviewers, but they more or less have it. If your engine is 10 years old or newer, you might be disappointed.

My other complaint is that the index is not very good. It is not comprehensive, and it is split up by manufacturer (the latter could be good or bad per search).

Lack of Information - WHAT A RIP OFF!.......2006-02-01

The book, "Small Engine Repairs" was from 1992 and earlier. When I ordered the book, there was no information on the book to tell me what years the book covered. I paid $19.95 for the book and shipping. When I returned the book I was re-imbursed under $8.00, half of what I paid for the book. I needed a repair manual from 1995 to current. I will tell everyone I know what a rip off amazon.com is! I could understand paying for return shippment, but half for a book I could'nt use? I am very dissatisfied with your services. Brenda

Don't buy this book unless you're absolutely sure it will help you. The other reviewer had it right, go to the library, match your engine with those covered. If you have an older small engine this book may be of use, if your engine is newer than 1994, good luck. Many of the diagrams are small and compact, a magnifying glass helped.

I came to know Maugham through his novels, especially The Razor's Edge, Of Human Bondage, and Cakes and Ale. I purchased this collection not knowing what to expect. The stories are character focused, at times incredibly witty and amusing, at times melancholy and near heart-breaking. As in his novels, Maugham has the ability to make the reader see what is not written. Highlights include The Rain, a commentary on the work of missionaries, and The Pool, one of the saddest shorts ever written. Others, such as The Three Fat Women of Antibbes, will probably make you laugh out loud. A first rate collection.

The Writer's Writer.......2002-12-22

I've only just discovered the wonders of W. Somerset Maugham. This was the first of his works that I have ever read, and it was an absolute pleasure. There are other reviewers on these pages who are more knowledgeable and better critics than I, so I am just going to tell you how much I enjoyed this particular compilation. Every story was a treasure. Every single character was so well drawn, that for the first time in a long time I found myself empathising with these people, loving them, hating them, lamenting for them and genuinely caring about what happened to them.

Every story started off in a fairly prosaic, nondescript fashion. But every story had me hooked by at least the first page. Sometimes they unfolded as funny stories, other were tales about how an individual's world had changed catastrophically. I never got bored, and the writing was never predictable, Maugham always had a surprisingly poetical observation to make that would send me into raptures. This is truly a writer of sensitivity and talent. I can honestly say that I have been searching for a writer of this calibre for a long time. If you care anything at all about the amazing stories that ordinary, little people have, then read this book and Maugham's other works. He truly is a master.
