Book Description
Hidden somewhere among all the numbers in a financial report is vitally important information about where a company has been and where it is going. This is especially relevant in light of the current corporate scandals.
The sixth edition of this bestselling book is designed to help anyone who works with financial reports--but has neither the time nor the need for an in-depth knowledge of accounting--cut through the maze of accounting information to find out what those numbers really mean.
Customer Reviews:
great book.......2007-07-30
I spent a long time trying to find a book that could help me read a financial statement. It needed to be simple without sacrificing substance. Finally I found this book. It shows how income, cash flow, and balance sheet are related, in a visual, line by line way.
I think the only way you could do it better is by having a spreadsheet which linked all these together, which you could play with and see the linkages in action. But barring that, this book is great.
It does require study, but I don't think it requires much accounting background. I had no business or accounting background, and I found this book approachable.
The one downside is that it doesn't teach you how to interpret a financial statement. It teaches you to understand how one works, and how it fits together. But how to spot things that might be "troublesome" or in need of further inquiry in a real business report, this book doesn't tell you.
You need another book for that sort of thing. And I haven't found one of those yet -- that is simple and strong in its own way.
Excellent terse intro to financial statements.......2007-06-19
I loved this book. John Tracy does an outstanding job introducing financial statements: how to read them, how to make sense of the numbers, and the basic framework around the statements. His language is easy to understand, and his examples illustrate the new concepts very well. The book is 200 pages long, and there is zero fluff. I found everything to be very useful information - nice and crisp.
Tracy jumps in by introducing cash flows and basic financial statements. He continues through the first half of the book by going down the income statement and the balance sheet together, describing how the numbers from the two statements work together (i.e. which portions of the income statement affect various numbers on the balance sheet).
Next, Tracy jumps into cash flows and describes the cash flow statement. He nicely illustrates how cash flow and profit differ and how they can grow in opposite directions depending on whether the business is expanding or shrinking. Tracy then covers logistics - he talks about statement footnotes, the importance of CPA audits, and the organizations and standards surrounding financial statements. He continues by discussing the various methods of expensing the cost of goods (LIFO, FIFO, average) and various depreciation and amortization techniques, and wraps up with common financial ratios (ROE, ROI, P/E, etc.) and a brief FAQ of basic questions and answers.
There are many diagrams throughout the book, and they are, for the most part, very helpful. I found a couple small errors in the diagrams (and a couple typos throughout the text), but they didn't really hinder my understanding - it was obvious what the author was trying to say and show.
This book does not require any previous knowledge of the subject. In fact, Tracy does a fantastic job defining everything he discusses. I like how new terms and concepts are italicized to emphasize their importance. The book is well organized (see 2nd and 3rd paragraphs of this review), although I wish that chapters 20 and 21 (cost of goods expense methods, depreciation & amortization techniques) came earlier in the book - closer to where Tracy discussed these items on the income statement. However, I do understand his motivation to save these items for later - so as not to confuse the reader with more advanced topics while introducing the basics - and to postpone the discussion of various ways to affect the net income.
Tracy is unafraid to give his own personal advice. He often uses "I think" and "in my opinion" throughout the book to emphasize his own preferences and thoughts rather than the generally accepted ideas. He expresses his opinions on the GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles), the organizations that ultimately govern the GAAP, and, most importantly, on acceptable and average values for various financial ratios - I found this to be most helpful.
On a totally different note, the book has an interesting physical format - it is wider than it is taller. While this sucks for bookshelf storage, it gives lots of room for the large and clear diagrams.
In conclusion, I recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn about financial statements. You will not see very advanced topics, but you will get a great introduction and quite a bit of practical advice. Excellent job by John Tracy!
Pros:
+ very easy to read and understand - Tracy's explanations are simple and straight to the point
+ lots of diagrams, which nicely illustrate the flow of numbers
+ great intro to the 3 basic financial statements
+ additional useful and interesting info on the organizations and standards surrounding financial statements
+ practical advice (average values for certain ratios, what to look for first in the financial statements, etc.)
Cons:
- a couple small diagram errors and typos (not very significant)
- could include more info on advanced topics
A pleasure to read.......2007-06-17
I am only a little way through the latest edition of "How to Read a Financial Report". One area i can already see as a huge plus is the style in which the book is written. Candidly, clearly and entertainingly relaying information on a topic that can so easily become one of the dreariest around has helped me understand and retain much more information on the terms and concepts I need to know.
Without even finishing half of this book, I am compelled to offer a strong recommendation to anyone contemplating purchasing it. I have only done what could best be described as rudimentary level accounting previously. This has left me with a great number of terms and definitions but little real understanding on the interconnectedness of financial reports and the terms within them. "How to Read a Financial Report" essentially gathers all the pieces of the puzzle and clearly shows you how it is put together. Whilst I cannot comment on the latter half of the book, this explanation of the way the financial statements connect has already proven invaluable to me.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone wanting to truly understand the nature of financial statements

Arrows, Diagrams, and Simple Explanations.......2007-05-18
If you already know how to read financial reports like a pro or you work in the accounting department as an auditor, this book is definitely not for you. However, if the reams of reports spit out by corporations dumbfound you or you just feel intimidated when your accountant hands you a P&L, this book is perfect for you!
The author starts by explaining, line-by-line, each item in each type of report: Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and more. The author then uses good ol' fashion simple diagrams and arrows that show direct interactions between lines in each report. The concepts are as easy to grasp as "if this number goes up, this other number goes down and here's why." It's just that elegant!
In my opinion, this should be required reading for any college graduate. In today's world a certain level of business acumen is expected which includes the ability to read and comprehend basic financial reports. This book gives you enough knowledge so that you can comfortably understand those reports. Of course, you can always delve deeper, if you choose, but keep in mind that this book is for the uninitiated which is just perfect for most of us mere mortals.
Uses Visuals to Show Financial Relationships.......2006-12-07
How to Read a Financial Report uses a lot of visuals to show the relationships between balance sheets, income statements, and statements of cash flow. If you have ever looked at a financial report and wondered what everything meant, this book is for you. This book took me from knowing hardly anything about financial statements to being able to understand them. I highly recommend this book to both investors and business owners.

Book Description
Research of the interstellar medium (ISM) has been advancing rapidly during the last 10 years, mainly due to immensely improved observational facilities and techniques in all wavelength ranges. We are now able to investigate the ISM in external galaxies and even the intergalactic and intracluster medium in great detail. Increased spatial and spectral resolution have provided us with a great deal of information on the interstellar gas in its various phases, the magnetic field and the cosmic rays, and of course, also the stellar component, which is the driving agent of the interstellar matter cycle.
Since only fairly recently, a sufficient amount of computing power has become available to tackle these problems with some prospect of obtaining a self-consistent picture of the ISM, a major goal of this workshop was to bring together observers and theoreticians sufficiently close, so that intense discussions about the necessities and desiderata of modelling the ISM could be stimulated. Observers have shown in great detail on this conference of what is seen on all scales of the ISM, near and far, and what boundary conditions would be appropriate for realistic models, and theoreticians pointed out what assumptions and simplifications their codes need, and how future observations could test their models. As a first step towards this goal, some self-consistent numerical simulations with a minimum number of relevant physical processes were also presented on this meeting. There was wide agreement, that this approach - to keep observers and theoreticians in close contact and also in sometimes quite controversial discussions - will bear fruitful results in the near future.

Description:
A new ''grafting to'' strategy was proposed for the preparation of polymer based ion exchange supports carrying polymeric ligands in the form of weak or strong ion exchangers. Monodisperse porous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene dimethacrylate), poly(GMA-co-EDM) particles 5.9@mm in size were synthesized by ''modified seeded polymerization''. Poly(2,3-dihydroxypropyl methacrylate-co-ethylene dimethacrylate), poly(DHPM-co-EDM) particles were then obtained by the acidic hydrolysis of poly(GMA-co-EDM) particles. The hydroxyl functionalized beads were treated with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate to have covalently linked methacrylate groups on the particle surface. The selected monomers carrying weak or strong ionizable groups (2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid, AMPS; 2-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate, DMAEM and N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] methacrylamide, DMAPM) were subsequently grafted onto the particles via immobilized methacrylate groups. The final polymer based materials with polyionic ligands were tried as chromatographic packing in the separation of proteins by ion exchange chromatography. The proteins were successfully separated both in the anion and cation exchange mode with higher column yields with respect to the previously proposed materials. The plate heights obtained for poly(AMPS) and poly(DMAEM) grafted poly(DHPM-co-EDM) particles by using proteins as the analytes were 80 and 200@mm, respectively. Additionally, the plate height exhibited no significant increase with the increasing linear flow rate in the range of 1-20cm/min. The most important property of the proposed strategy is to be applicable for the synthesis of any type of ion exchanger both in the strong and weak form.

Description:
Selenium species present in water-soluble fractions of proteins of lyophilised biological samples, such as fish (tuna and trout), shellfish (krill, oyster and mussel), vegetal tissues (white clover and wheat flour) and selenized yeast were evaluated. The water-soluble fractions with and without 4% (w/v) sodium dodecyl sulphate were analysed by size exclusion chromatography coupled to both inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (SEC-ICP-MS) and UV spectrophotometers. Two different columns with effective separation ranges between 300 and 1kDa (Biosep-SEC-2000) and 7 and 0.1kDa (Superdex Peptide HR 10/30) were used, with 5mM sodium phosphate at pH 7.2 (0.8mlmin^-^1) and 5mM sodium phosphate with 60mM NaCl at pH 7.5 (0.6mlmin^-^1) as mobile phases, respectively. The enzymatic digests of both the water-soluble fractions and the non-soluble residues were analysed by cation exchange chromatography-ICP-MS, using a Hamilton PRP-X200 column and 4mM pyridine (1mlmin^-^1) at pH 2.8 and 4.7 as mobile phases. The presence of high molecular weight selenoproteins (150-50kDa) in the samples studied, except for fish and white clover with proteins
<30kDa, was demonstrated and low molecular weight (
<5kDa) compounds were also found. Selenomethionine species (SeMet) within the range of 0.2-600@mgg^-^1 was quantified in the selected tissues, although selenocystine (SeCys"2) was identified only in vegetal samples (0.1-0.7@mgg^-^1). Trimethylselenonium ion was quantified (0.1-0.3@mgg^-^1) in oyster, mussel, trout and white clover tissues. Inorganic selenium as selenite was found in the selenized yeast, krill, and white clover samples (0.2-3@mgg^-^1), while selenate was found to be present only in yeast tissues (8@mgg^-^1).

Description:
A thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) system was interfaced to a mass spectrometry (MS) detector to investigate the thermal evolution of decomposition products from microorganisms. Traditionally, TGA-MS has been used to investigate the thermal parameters and chemical composition of materials such as the coal and lignin energy producing compounds and a wide range of technical organic polymers. The relative weight loss of biochemical species and compounds in bacteria from the TGA system allowed a comparison to the relative amounts of the same substances in bacteria from conventional microbiological extraction and isolation techniques. MS is shown to produce information rich total ion chromatogram profiles of thermal products from biochemical standards and microorganisms. The TGA thermal weight loss chromatogram (TWC) provides a degree of resolution, because the bacterial biochemical substances and components partition in a temporal fashion. Standard biochemical substances such as dipicolinic acid, polyhydroxybutyric acid, and peptidoglycan are produced in the same general temperature region in the TWC profile, and the compounds have similar mass spectra compared to those from microorganisms. Characterization of microorganisms was possible by the relation of their thermal events and extracted mass spectra to those of low and high mass model biochemical compounds.

Description:
Three strains-Nocardioides sp. MFC-A, Rhodococcus rhodochrous MFC-B, and Stenotrophomonas sp. MFC-C-were newly isolated from rice soil or bark compost as microorganisms capable of cometabolically degrading mefenacet (2-benzothiazol-2-yloxy-N-methyl-acetanilide). Several other species belonging to the genera Nocardioides, Rhodococcus, and Stenotrophomonas were also capable of degrading mefenacet, suggesting that the ability is not specific to these isolates, but common at least in these genera. N-methylaniline and 2-benzothiazoloxy acetic acid were identified as the metabolites by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Besides mefenacet, the isolates could degrade one or more other amide pesticides, such as flutolanil, mepronil, metolachlor, and pretilachlor. These results indicate that the strains Nocardioides sp. MFC-A, Rhodococcus rhodochrous MFC-B, and Stenotrophomonas sp. MFC-C degrade mefenacet via hydrolysis of the amide bond, but their substrate specificities differ.

Book Description
Siddhartha is perhaps the most important and compelling moral allegory our troubled century has produced. Integrating Eastern and Western spiritual traditions with psychoanalysis and philosophy, this strangely simple tale, written with a deep and moving empathy for humanity, has touched the lives of millions since its original publication in 1922.
Translated by Joachim Neugroschel
Introduction by Ralph Freedman
Customer Reviews:
Lessons for life........2006-02-18
This is an excellant book for people seeking answers to living life to its fullest. Siddhartha learned the lessons the hard way and through his journey we then learn those same lessons and find out just how simple they really are. I recommend reading this book again as most of us have probably read it years ago.
Come On.......2005-06-25
People that say this book changed your life and that if you get it it is the best book and the only book you need, clearly didn't get the book. That is the antithesis of one of the main points of the book. The point is that "teaching" is wrong, striving to "learn" is wrong. You have to find the answers within yourself, you have to truly see and hear yourself without your ego clouding the truth. This is the way to happiness and "enlightenment" The point of this book is that you cannot learn what it shows/tells you. You must find it within yourself, you must experience it yourself. The point is that a book on enlightenment on spirituallity can never truly show you these things can never bring enlightenment to you, that is something that must be discovered within yourself. You must strive for it, go through hardships for it, it cannot be handed to you or it loses all value.
great if you're in the mood for a mid-life crisis.......2005-04-29
Seriously, if you're gonna read Siddhartha, this is certainly the edition to get -- the slightly oversized Penguin Classics one.
It features a useful (35-page!) introduction by Ralph Freedman, which includes suggestions for further reading.
The translation by Joachim Neugroschel -- a new one -- also reads swiftly and naturally.
There are no footnotes for the text itself, however.
Amazing!.......2004-09-27
this book is simply amazing! and when i say simply, i also mean that it is an interestingly simple book... very short and concise... and yet filled with so much knowledge and meaning... it really is a treatise on life itself.
this book truly is a two way conversation. you just cant help wondering, asking new question you've never asked before... some books are strictly written for the excitement, making them a one way conversation, the author just telling you things and there is nothing you can say that will make what he (or she) said better... but this book, as i said, truly is the opposite of that.
read the book and you will know where I am coming from... it is a great book and worthyto be read by everyone...
Humanity Needs This Book.......2004-05-19
I would have never read this book had it not been for the advice from someone I admire greatly. It was highly recommended as a spiritual experience....so I tried it.
With all of the emphasis placed on religion today I found this book to inspire not religious practice but true inner peace and spiritual values comparable to many religious texts. This book has something to say and if you get it the message will follow you forever, yes it has that much impact on an open heart.
The story revolves around an Indian youth named Siddhartha, who with a restless heart and many questions attempts to experience the world before making a commitment to tradition. He struggles with the ties of family values and the pull of an unknown world. So he takes a plunge and leaves his security nest to find what life is all about. He works, he strives, he succeeds, he finds wealth, love and humanity but in the end all he really needs is peace of mind and freedom to choose his own path. Sounds achingly familiar to us all dosen't it?
I highly recommend you experience this book, for the beauty, the bravery and the freedom of choice. It will remain a part of your soul if you let it!
