Book Description
This comprehensive annotated bibliography, the first of its kind, provides lengthy entries on articles dealing with black health published during three time periods from post reconstruction to 1960. The compilers', Mitchell F. Rice and Woodrow Jones, Jr., introduction reviews the literature that composes the bibliography and discusses trends in the mortality, morbidity, and health care utilization behaviors of blacks from slavery to the mid-20th century. This cogent essay places the social context of black health care into perspective and enhances both linkages to the dominant themes of each period and a fuller understanding of the history of health care inequities in the U.S. A companion volume by the same compilers', Black American Health: An Annotated Bibliography (Greenwood Press, 1987), treats the more recent literature of the 1970s and 1980s. Following the in-depth introduction, the bibliography is divided into three chapters that annotate literature from the post reconstruction to the early 20th century, 1871-1919; from 1920 to 1950; and from 1951-1960. Each entry consists of an item number, author, title and source, date of publication, and page numbers as well as an exceptionally thorough and thoughtful annotation that averages ten lines in length. Subject and author indexes complete the work which will prove invaluable to students, scholars, and researchers in the fields of black history, medicine, and public health.

Book Description
This Astronomical Atlas features conventional star and galaxy maps, along with spectacular three-dimensional stereographs. These 3-D images are viewed with the red/green spectacles provided with the book, to show the stars and galaxies in three-dimensional space. This book contains three sets of comprehensive full-sky maps and 3-D stereographs. They cover local space, regional space, (the naked-eye stars) and distant space (with more than 20,000 galaxies). All the stereographs have been derived from the most accurate data available, including the results produced by the Hipparcos satellite. They can be used to directly measure approximate distances of the objects they show, as well as for viewing in 3-D. The distant space maps represent probably the most complete mappings of the galaxies available to amateur astronomers, and their accompanying three-dimensional views provide tantalising glimpses of structure at the largest scale of the universe.
Customer Reviews:
Definately try before you buy book.......2000-05-17
The book uses the traditional red/green images with special glasses in order to produce the 3-D effects. Some poeple may have trouble getting used to this (if you are not good at looking at 3-D objects using red/green glasses, then this is not the book for you). The trick is to stare at it for a long while and to make sure you have the book far away enough so that the whole page can be viewed by either eye. If you do this, the images can be spectacular (though after a while, the novelty starts to wear off a little). It would have been nice if they also had 3-D shots of nebula as well as our solar system. Images of the galaxy can be confusing as they use a weird coding system of characters. I wish they would have used another technology to makes the images 3-D (assuming it is possible), so that the colors of the stars could be more accurately represented. Definately a try before you buy book as some people will like it, others may not. Perhaps it makes a good book to put in the library or a local book club (assuming you can make sure nobody steals the glasses). I would have given this book 3.5 stars if possible (unfortunately, I can only give 3 or 4 stars).

Customer Reviews:
First book to use fuzzy logic in chemistry.......2004-07-31
A surprising thing about this book is that it appears to be the first to use fuzzy logic in chemistry. Given that it was published in 1997, that seems rather late, since fuzzy logic was well established in computing and electric engineering in the 1980s.
Ah, but better late than never. Since most chemists have never dealt with fuzzy logic, the editor chose the wise step of having several research chemists write the chapters. Hopefully, this will ease acceptance of the method amongst chemists.
The subjects of the chapters tend to be hard, unsurprisingly. No softball simple textbook examples. Instead, we deal with issues like determining the shape of a large molecule, or the design of a drug.

Book Description
In Part I, the impact of an integro-differential operator on parity logic engines (PLEs) as a tool for scientific modeling from scratch is presented. Part II outlines the fuzzy structural modeling approach for building new linear and nonlinear dynamical causal forecasting systems in terms of fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs). Part III introduces the new type of autogenetic algorithms (AGAs) to the field of evolutionary computing. Altogether, these PLEs, FCMs, and AGAs may serve as conceptual and computational power tools.

Book Description
A place of salmon runs, ancient totems, and a lesson a young vicar must learn....
Amid the grandeur of the remote Pacific Northwest stands Kingcome, a village so ancient that, according to Kwakiutl myth, it was founded by the two brothers left on earth after the great flood. The Native Americans who still live there call it Quee, a place of such incredible natural richness that hunting and fishing remain primary food sources. But the old culture of totems and potlatch is being replaces by a new culture of prefab housing and alcoholism. Kingcome's younger generation is disenchanted and alienated from its heritage. And now, coming upriver is a young vicar, Mark Brian, on a journey of discovery that can teach him -- and us -- about life, death, and the transforming power of love.
Customer Reviews:
a beautiful story.......2007-10-06
I'm adding this book to my short list of best books I have read, those that I want my children to read as they grow up. It left me crying, and happy.
A heart touching reading experience.......2007-09-16
This is a book that has truely stood the test of time. First published in Canada in 1967, it was later published in the US in 1973 and rose to #1 on the New York Times Best Sellers list.
I started reading "I Heard the Owl Call My Name" at 11 pm and simply could not put down. I finished it 3 hours later. From the first page, author Margaret Craven drew me into this novel of the lives of a Native Canadian tribe living in coastal British Columbia and the young vicar who is sent to minister to them.
The vicar, Mark, does not know that he has only two to three years left to live but in the prologue, we, the readers, find out when the doctor informs his Bishop. Being aware of that looming shadow of death makes the other deaths in the book even more poignant; the human deaths, as well as, the death of the Native way of life.
We travel with Mark on his path of discovery as he learns how to live and work among the people he's come to serve. We experience his loneliness, his uncertainty and share in the joy and sadness as he comes to love and respect this tribe and the individuals in it, just as they come to love and respect and ultimately to accept him as one of their own.
By the end, tears were streaming down my face. I can't remember the last time I was affected so profoundly by a book.
If you haven't read this, I highly recommend it. And if you are one of those who were forced to read this as a high school English assignment, I encourage you to come back to it in a few years time and read it again. You'll be able to see it then with different eyes.
I heard the owl call my name.......2007-07-26
the book was interesting and a wonderful story sad at the end but it was wonderful I couldn't put the book down and had to read it all.
Owl re-visited.......2007-02-01
I ordered this recently because I passed the copy I purchased in 1975 to my grandaughter , who has asked me if she can keep it.Of course I said "Yes" , but find I really miss having a copy in the house.
Story takes you out of the hubbub and into the essentials.
The Owl..........2007-01-21
What does one do for a friend who has only a year or two to live? Do you coddle him or challenge him? That's the premise of I Heard the Owl Call My Name. The bishop who is faced with this question, chooses to send his young ill vicar off to the hardest and most remote parish, a small village in British Columbia. The book covers the remaining months of the vicar's life without dwelling on his situation.
Instead, the book focuses on how the vicar learns the culture of the Kwakiutl and likewise how the Kwakiutl begin to slowly accept that the outside world is beginning to seep into their culture as their children seek education outside of the village.
I Heard the Owl Call My Name is a tender story about two cultures learning from each other as seen through the eyes of a young vicar sent to Kingcome, a village in the Pacific Northwest. It's one of the few books where neither culture is favored in how they are portrayed. Both have their good bits and their bad bits. Characters have good days and bad days and are allowed to grow into well rounded individuals.

Impress Your Colleagues, Enthrall Your Students.......2002-12-16
The sample lesson plan at the front of the book is in outline form for the entire unit and connects across the curriculum. Connections to Vocabulary, Science, Math, Culture, Art, and Logical Thought Process are included. Provided are testing materials to determine the level of learning (answer keys are included.) I was looking forward to teaching this unit, but alas, I did not have the opportunity to teach this grade level, (other than student teaching.)
With a scanner these lessons could easily be adapted to the computer.
Book Description
I am convinced that at birth the cake is already baked. Nurture is the nuts or frosting, but if you’re a spice cake, you’re a spice cake, and nothing is going to change you into an angel food.
Tall, slender Violet Mathers is growing up in the Great Depression, which could just as well define her state of mind. Abandoned by her mother as a child, mistreated by her father, and teased by her schoolmates (“Hey, Olive Oyl, where’s Popeye?”), the lonely girl finds solace in artistic pursuits. Only when she’s hired by the town’s sole feminist to work the night shift in the local thread factory does Violet come into her name, and bloom. Accepted by her co-workers, the teenager enters the happiest phase of her life, until a terrible accident causes her to retreat once again into her lonely shell.
Realizing that she has only one clear choice, Violet boards a bus heading west to California. But when the bus crashes in North Dakota, it seems that Fate is having another cruel laugh at Violet’s expense. This time though, Violet laughs back. She and her fellow passengers are rescued by two men: Austin Sykes, whom Violet is certain is the blackest man to ever set foot on the North Dakota prairie, and Kjel Hedstrom, who inspires feelings Violet never before has felt. Kjel and Austin are musicians whose sound is like no other, and with pluck, verve, and wit, Violet becomes part of their quest to make a new kind of music together.
Oh My Stars is Lorna Landvik’s most ambitious novel yet, with a cast of characters whose travails and triumphs you’ll long remember. It is a tale of love and hope, bigotry and betrayal, loss and discovery–as Violet, who’s always considered herself a minor character in her own life story, emerges as a heroine you’ll laugh with, cry with, and, most important, cheer for all the way.
From the Hardcover edition.

Don't miss this one.......2007-08-29
Hands down, Landvik's best work. I loved it, everyone I've loaned it to loved it, you will too!
Another Winner from Lorna!.......2007-02-13
I was hooked on Ms. Landvik after reading Patti Jane's House of Curl. This is another great read from her. The first chapter was a little hard to get into but I was quickly hooked! And very surprised with the turns the book took. I have to agree with the reviewer's remark about the historical information. I read things I had no idea about! The characters are real and unforgettable. I highly recommend this book.
Lorna never disappoints her readers.......2007-02-09
Once again Lorna Landvik presents a novel that is full of unique and endearing characters. How can we not fall in love with Kjel or want Violet to succeed? In a story that deals with both outer and inner beauty, readers are taken on a road trip that is not only memorable, but life-changing for each of the characters. Landvik's storytelling abilities are unsurpassed. I've enjoyed all of her novels and this one was one of her best. I can't wait until her next release.
Good but Forgettable........2007-01-30
Save this book for a rainy day. The main characters - Violet, Kjel, Austin, and Dallas - are all sympathetic, but slightly underwritten. It was a nice story, but nothing to sink your teeth into. I particularly felt that the author was thinking of what a nice Lifetime movie this would make as she got deeper into the book. How else to explain the immediate transference of love and loyalties following a tragedy befalling one of the characters? (When you read it, see what I mean, and try and tell me that I'm wrong.) The author seemed to run out of plot 3/4 of the way into the book, and cobbled together a hasty ending that not only didn't jibe with the rest of the story. It was a good read, but not satisfying, and completely forgettable 24 hours after reading it.
very enjoyable.......2007-01-22
Don't be put off by the corny title of this book (for me, it gives the impression of a sappy romance) - this book is great. I was pulled in right from the beginning and could not put this book down.
I loved Violet's character and enjoyed seeing her transformation. I loved the other characters as well - the band members, Elwin, the Clamshells, etc. My only (very slight) criticism is that the book got a tad slow for me at the very end but not enough that I wanted to stop reading it.
This is definitely one I will be recommending to my friends and to my reading group.
