Big Brother in the 21st century.......2004-01-28
A few months ago, I applied for an adjunct position -- teaching one course, online from my home computer. To my amazement, the private "alternative" university demanded a background check. I said thanks but no thanks -- and only now do I understand what happened.
Lane, author of Naked Employee, explains that companies fear risks associated with loose cannon employees, although he doesn't use those words. They risk embarrassment, lawsuits and more. And now, when it's so easy to order background checks, why take those risks?
If you resist, says Lane, prospective employers won't think you're principled; they'll think you're hiding something. After all, background checks revealed that fifty percent of resumes submitted to a major search firm included falsified information, ranging from imaginary degrees to exaggerated responsibilities.
Once you're hired, you can be subjected to physical exams and ongoing surveillance. Lane reviews the relative invasiveness of hair, blood and urine tests. Uniforms can be equipped with devices to prevent theft and track your whereabouts. Personal phone calls can be monitored long enough to discover they're personal -- a good two to three minutes.
As I read this book, I grew more and more horrified. Lane stays focused on what's happening today, only briefly suggesting ways to frame the problem on a broader scale. For instance, at the very end of the book, he notes that providing health insurance gives employers a solid basis for questioning employee lifestyles, on and off the job.
In a much earlier book, JobShift, WIlliam Bridges called for individuals to become independent contractors rather than employees. He argued that separating health insurance from employment would protect our privacy as well as our physical health. A paradigm shift, requiring major changes in infrastructure, would be required to alter our relationship with our employers, careers and jobs.
Thus the employment relationship has become decidedly lopsided. In return for invasion of privacy, the employer offers no long-term guarantees of employment. And in at least one non-traditional "university," the background checks have become a substitute for hiring: the "dean" didn't know anything about what was being taught -- just checked off boxes. I wonder how prevalent this trend has become.
Packed with both social analysis and business insights.......2003-07-20
Technology has made it easier for employers to monitor and investigate employees' behavior - in turn, affecting morale and productivity. The Naked Employee offers an analysis of how technology is compromising workplace privacy, with chapters covering the social, legal and moral implications of different types of employee monitoring systems. From issues of employee privacy to the nuts and bolts of current investigative surveillance systems, this is packed with both social analysis and business insights.

Personally I think it's a good book to prepare medical students for short cases. The only thing that minus is the photos inside the book are in black and white, which could be better if posted in color format.

Book Description
Globular clusters are spherical, densely packed groups of stars found around galaxies. They are thought to have formed at the same time as their host galaxy and thus provide a powerful probe for understanding galaxy evolution, as well as being studied as objects of interest in their own right. This volume presents invited articles by a team of world leaders who gathered at the X Canary Islands Winter School of Astrophysics to review our current understanding of globular clusters. It provides an accessible introduction to the field for graduate students, and a comprehensive and up-to-date reference for researchers.
Customer Reviews:
the night sky.......2005-02-15
What must is be like to live on a planet of a star inside one of these globular clusters? A night sky that is never dark? This perhaps is an inevitable thought if you read the book. It goes into all sorts of technical detail about our current understanding of the clusters. And the latter are described, both within the Milky Way and in other galaxies.
A very specialised book, that is best suited for the professional astronomer. Most of the observational details discussed will probably be mostly intelligible to such a person.

Book Description
Globular clusters are roughly spherical, densely packed groups of stars found around galaxies. Most globular clusters probably formed at the same time as their host galaxies. Therefore they provide a unique fossil record of the conditions during the formation and early evolution of galaxies. This volume presents a comprehensive review of globular cluster systems. It summarizes their observed properties and shows how these constrain models of the structure of stars, the formation and evolution of galaxies and globular clusters, and the age of the Universe. For graduate students and researchers, this timely volume provides the definitive reference on globular cluster systems.

Globulars are everywhere.......2001-09-07
I have found this peice to be very enlightining. It is fairly comprehensive and is well written. It delves in depth into one of the most amazing facets of the universe. Globulars are not only beautiful and amazing to behold but are probaply one of the most curious objects in the universe. This work explores most of the recient research on globulars and tries to make sence of it all. I would recommend it to any one interested in this aspect of Astronomy. It is fairly technical and does require background in stastics and at least be an intermediate astronomer.

Galactic Dynamics (Princeton Series in Astrophysics)
ASIN: 0691084602 |
Book Description
One of the world's most distinguished astrophysicists presents a comprehensive theoretical treatment of the dynamical evolution of globular clusters. These clusters, of which there are typically 100 per galaxy, each containing some 100,00 stars, evolve slowly and their cores gradually collapse as a result of gravitational encounters between pairs of stars. Lyman Spitzer's research in this field established the framework for decades of investigation. Now he summarizes in a unified, systematic way this branch of theoretical astrophysics with its still challenging problems.
An introductory chapter summarizes observations on the globular clusters of our Galaxy. Then follows a full description of the theoretical analysis developed during the last twenty years. The final two of the seven chapters discuss how the collapse of a cluster core terminates as a result of double star formation, with neutron stars and black holes possibly involved. In addition, the postcollapse phase, currently a rapidly developing field of research, is briefly described.
Lyman Spitzer, Jr., who was awarded the Crafoord Prize in 1985 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Science, is Senior Research Astronomer at Princeton University. His books include Physics of Fully Ionized Gases (Wiley), Physical Processes in the Interstellar Medium (Wiley), and Searching between the Stars (Yale).

Book Description
Dramatic progress is a trademark of the recent study of globular cluster systems. Considerations about the formation and evolution compose the first chapter, followed by a chapter on young star clusters. Then come four chapters reviewing the globular cluster system of early-type, late-type and dwarf galaxies, as well as of groups of galaxies. One chapter is dedicated to stellar population models and their applications to the field. Finally a chapter reviews the kinematics of galaxies derived from globular cluster systems and another their role in the context of galaxy formation and evolution studies. As a whole, the book gives an up-to-date view of the field at the beginning of the new decade, which will without doubt again bring significant progress in our understanding of globular cluster systems and galaxy formation and evolution.
Book Description
The gravitational million-body problem is a model for understanding the dynamics of rich star clusters. This text describes the theory astronomers need for studying globular star clusters. After introducing the million-body problem from various view-points, the book systematically develops the tools needed for studying the million-body problems in nature, and introduces the most important theoretical models. Written for graduate students and researchers in astrophysics and astronomy, this text also has important applications in the fields of theoretical physics, computational science and mathematics.
Download Description
The globular star clusters of the Milky Way contain hundreds of thousands of stars held together by gravitational interactions, and date from the time when the Milky Way was forming. This text describes the theory astronomers need for studying globular star clusters. The gravitational million-body problem is an idealised model for understanding the dynamics of a cluster with a million stars. After introducing the million-body problem from various view-points, the book systematically develops the tools needed for studying the million-body problems in nature, and introduces the most important theoretical models. Including a comprehensive treatment of few-body interactions, and developing an intuitive but quantitative understanding of the three-body problem, the book introduces numerical methods, relevant software, and current problems. Suitable for graduate students and researchers in astrophysics and astronomy, this text also has important applications in the fields of theoretical physics, computational science and mathematics.

Book Description
The gap between experimental objects and models for calculations in chemistry is being bridged. The size of experimental nano-objects is decreasing, while reliable calculations are feasible for larger and larger molecular systems. The results of these calculations for isolated molecules are becoming more relevant for experiments. However, there are still significant challenges for computational methods. This series of books presents reviews of current advances in computational methodologies and applications.
Chapter 1 of this volume provides an overview of the theoretical and numerical aspects in the development of the polarizable continuum model (PCM). Chapter 2 demonstrates a multiplicative scheme used to estimate the properties of two- and three-dimensional clusters from the properties of their one-dimensional components. Chapter 3 discusses the application of ab initio methods for a reliable evaluation of the characteristics of hydrogen-bonded and van der Waals complexes.
Ab initio quantum-chemical methods are popular among researchers investigating various aspects of DNA. The properties of DNA base polyads linked by base-base hydrogen bonds are reviewed in Chapter 4, while Chapter 5 reviews the primary radiation-induced defects in nucleic acid building blocks, and how DNA can be influenced by chemical and environmental effects. Finally, Chapter 6 discusses available experimental data of DNA bases, base pairs, and their complexes with water.
Customer Reviews:
good summary of trends.......2005-08-06
Stay current in computational chemistry with this text. The chapters summarise recent techniques and show the continuing influence of advances in computer hardware and software. Basically, the molecules that you can usefully simulate keep getting bigger.
Several chapters discuss ab initio methods. Conceptually, these are always attractive, in enabling a first principles construction of molecules or reactions. There is extensive specific discussion of applying the methods towards DNA molecules. In part to predict various three dimensional structures.
The book is ideal for a graduate student in the field.

Book Description
In this provocative work, noted social and economic theorist Graeme D. Snooks exposes fatal flaws in the foundations of the Darwinian theory of evolution. Further, he develops a remarkable replacement theory of evolution. The new dynamic-strategy theory views life as a strategic pursuit (rather than a game of chance) in which organisms adopt dynamic strategies (only one of which is genetic change) to survive and prosper. This theory reveals the organism as empowered, rather than as the plaything of gods, genes, or blind chance. And it provides a powerful new basis for humanism.

Customer Reviews:
A product of the Cold War era.......2007-09-07
This book was written in a time when nuclear war seemed probable. Bomb shelters were practical things to buy and "duck-and-cover" was being used in schools. Looking back, it seems silly to think like that. We, the people of the 21st century, understand that a cache of nuclear weapons--except in the hands of madmen--are only useful for pschological warfare. We also grasp more fully the power and environmental hazzards of a nuclear strike. Because of our 50+ years of accumilated knowledge, ALAS, BABYLON may be a hard pill for some to swallow, but it isn't without merrit.
The problems with the book, first. The war, besides being relegated to pure background noise, is just thin. It's a setup that doesn't seem believable today. The effects of the nuclear strike are greatly under estimated. Considering that everything around Fort Repose (the fictional setting of this book) has been devastated by Russian nukes, it is highly unlikely that radiological fallout would not contaminate the area entirely. Ultimately, this leads the book to an overly "rosy" conclusion. (In a post-Katrina United States, we know the inneptitude with which the government reacted to a disaster we saw coming, and that two years later we still haven't fully restored that one region that was hit. How are we to believe a nuclear disaster of this scale, one that we had no time to prepare for, could start to be mended only one year later?)
But ALAS, BABYLON is not bad. In spite of some iffy dialog and their improbable resourcefulness, the characters are what make this book interesting. Randy Bragg (our main character) is certainly a progressive when taken in the context his time. The interaction of Randy and his surroudings gives us great insight into the mind of Pat Frank, I think.
This book works better as a tool to understanding American society (race relations, the state of optimism, fear of war, misinformation, etc.) in the Fifties, than it does as an actual tale. When viewed in that context, ALAS, BABYLON is quite good.
Alas, Babylon 1959.......2007-08-10
Plot Kernel - The people within a small town in Florida cope with uncertainty and the limitations of supply after their area is spared from the devastation of a massive nuclear exchange between the U.S. and Russia.
Alas, Babylon.......2007-08-07
Great book. I first read this book in college, 30 years ago. Some parts of this book have stayed with me all the years since that time. For instance, the description of "valuable items" traded in the market place, including safety pins and pencils. The struggle to survive of the regular citizens of this small town makes me want to go learn something about survival skills, or hope that I am at ground zero of a bomb myself.
Powerful and memorable - certainly the best of the post-nuclear war genre.......2007-07-04
I first read this book as a teen in the 70s and it had a powerful effect on me then. The images conveyed by this novel have stayed with me ever since. There are scenes from this book that I vividly remember more than 30 years later and I recently decided to reread it. Judging from some of the other reviews, there are many readers who share this view and have returned again and again to this novel. There are lots of other reviews that contain detailed plot summaries which I won't repeat here. The story revolves around the survivors of an all-out nuclear war living in rural Florida in the late 1950s. The day after the attack isn't too different than the before for Randy Bragg and his family who are located far from any military or civilian targets. Over a few days though it dawns on Bragg and the other residents of Fort Repose that many of the things that have been taken for granted in modern society (like regular deliveries of food to the grocery store) are long gone and likely will never return. There will be no more deliveries of heating oil, money is worthless, and once the small amount of gasoline is gone, everyone walks. If anyone still believes in the folly of a 'winnable' all-out nuclear war, they should read this book. One aspect of this genre (and this book in particular) that I find compelling is how the author treats the problem of what things from modern society will disappear and how will they be replaced. There are many obvious things (electricity, refrigeration, medicine, etc.), but many more mundane problems (e.g. shoes) that will become progressively more important months or years after the initial attack. Randy Bragg and his cohorts encounter and overcome a wide range of obstacles in their fight to survive. If I had any negative comment about this book, it is in fact far too optimistic about the fate of the survivors. Randy Bragg and his family never seriously have to contend with the fall-out, famine, and disease that would afflict all survivors to a greater or lesser degree. These things are touched upon (and even encountered), but they don't affect the residents of Fort Repose in a severe way. In any case, this is a powerful story about survival and the attempt to maintain and rebuild civilization after the catastrophic destruction of our organized society. A great book though that you will never forget, definitely worth the money to buy as you'll likely want to read it again and again.
very good book.......2007-06-27
somewhat outdated in belveability, however, it could still happen today. This book was written at the height of the Cold War and the fears of nuclear war. well written and worth ther time it takes to read it.

SCIENCE FICTION, LITERATURE
Customer Reviews:
The best post nuclear holocaust book I have ever read.......2006-12-28
My first experience with this book was when we were required to read it in our ninth grade English class. I enjoyed it so much that I have read it twice since then. The premise is that there is a great deal of tension between the Soviet Union and the United States and it erupts into a full-blown nuclear exchange. Randy Bragg lives in Fort Repose, a small town in Central Florida. His brother is an officer in the Strategic Air Command and sends his family to Randy's home where he thinks they will be safer.
While Randy is warned about the possibility of a nuclear war and he tries to prepare, much of what he does is of little value. The bombs explode and the world is suddenly turned upside down. On the bad side of the ledger, society is disrupted and there is a substantial collapse of social order. On the good side, it brings people together and all racial animosity between blacks and whites is gone.
Since he also served in the military, Randy organizes a defense force and strikes back against the criminal element. With the help of the local black people who are more accustomed to doing without and improvising, they start to rebuild their society. They begin producing food, moonshine and learn to eat animals that they previously would have ignored.
This is the best post nuclear holocaust book that I have ever read. It speaks of the incredible destruction, but also demonstrates the resilience of the people. If there is one weakness of the book, it is the lack of hordes of outsiders moving into their area. With the large tourist population of Florida, there would have been a flood of refugees moving into the area. In this book, that does not happen. In real life, there would have been a flood of sick and dying people desperate for any kind of assistance they could have received.
Sad, but heroic.......2005-07-26
"Alas, Babylon" tells the story of a small town in Florida right after nuclear war accidentally breaks out between America and the Soviet Union. If full-scale nuclear war had occurred, the novel is not realistic, as it minimizes the global damage. "On the Beach" depicts that sceranio better. But, if a limited, quickly aborted war occurred, "Alas, Babylon" becomes all too realistic. Such a "small" nuclear war is now more likely than a global nuclear war, with the changes in the former Soviet Union and the upsurge in state-sponsored terrorism.
In "Alas, Babylon", basic survival becomes the first goal of the now-isolated Florida town, with a rebuilding of an economy and a social structure addressed next. The characters are believable, the story flows well, and the reader is left with the impression that he/she has been to this place and met these people.
Like "On the Beach", "Alas, Babylon" takes humanity's worst-case scenario and moves forward with it. When I was a child, a global nuclear war did not seem implausible. It now seems less likely, but who can say after 9/11/01? Read "Alas, Babylon" and think. Hopefully, this story will forever remain fiction.

Book Description
St. Elizabeth's is a home for unwed mothers in the 1960s. Life there is not unpleasant, and for most, it is temporary. Not so for Rose, a beautiful, mysterious woman who comes to the home pregnant but not unwed. She plans to give up her baby because she knows she cannot be the mother it needs. But St. Elizabeth's is near a healing spring, and when Rose's time draws near, she cannot go through with her plans, not all of them. And she cannot remain forever untouched by what she has left behind ... and who she has become in the leaving.

Another winner.......2007-07-18
This book was a good read and rates as high as her other books I've read: The Magician's Assistant and BelCanto. Patchett's style is unlike any other author I've read.
Every rose has its thorn.......2007-06-12
This marked my first foray into Patchett, and I feel fortunate that someone insisted I read it. For one, Patchett's style allows the reader to view this family life from three very different perspectives, which--as an afterthought--may enable us to personally wonder how our own patchworked families operate. Is everything as it seems to be? What do we hold out from one another? Do we really know or want to know all of the details of our spouses or parents? As an aside, the novel shows how unwed mothers may have felt during a time when they were shunned, forced to live secluded lives of "visiting" out-of-town relatives for six to eight months. I felt a sense of empathy for each character, including Rose who could never enjoy her life. Overall, this web is a gem.

I really like Bel Canto but loved The Patron Saint of Liars. So many times a notable author's follow-up book is not good (e.g. Sue Monk Kidd). Ann Patchett's book was lyrical and moving. You feel each of the characters deep in your soul. A most incredible book! A must read!
Patron Saint of Liars: Patchett Teaches Life's Asymmetry.......2007-05-31
As she does in Bel Canto, Patchett draws her reader in with good prose and a compelling story. Whenever I had to leave Patron Saint of Liars, I marked time until I could get back and have Patchett tell me whatever she wanted to. But disappointment followed encouragement. Like her protagonist, Rose, Patchett leaves us three times, to enter abruptly into Son's life and then into Cecelia's, and then again at the end to form our own conclusions about so many issues she has raised. I yearned for resolution, for Son to tell Thomas and Cecelia the truth about Cecelia's father. I wanted Rose to come back or at least to explain why she left. But I've reconsidered: real life is not symmetrical or synchronous: sometimes there is no reason or resolution; sometimes we miss fulfillment by just seconds or hours. Prayers are not answered directly. And your deepest wish may not come true for you but for someone close to you, someone who has no use for it and no idea you ever dreamed at all. That's how Patchett rewards her reader. I think I can handle her next book now.
Loved it!.......2007-05-28
I love Ann Patchett's usage of language.
The characters were so complicated and hard to relate to:especially Rose. However, Patchett is able to entice us into her story.
