Nice to own a good math book of this type.......2005-09-27

I had read some of this book as a library book first and wanted it for my own! It isn't obvious from the title that it is a MATH BOOK at first, but considering it does say "Mechanics", there is a hint. It is a very good review of that part of math that one may not get in a regular Physics schooling or Math degree. It truly covers the stuff that is involved with plantery orbits (and even their perturbations), ie: Rotating Coordinates, Central Forces and Inverse Square Law. Fourier series, Bessel and Legendre functions and other studies of classical potential theory are a main theme. Grossman builds upon a students knoledge of calculus and develops towards his love of celestial mechanics as a study of love of the joy of applicable mathematics. J.E. Lear

A phenomenal achievement, Lonesome Dove could well be considered the Great American Novel. Part road trip, part character study, this amazing novel should be on everyone's reading list!

Mr. McMurtry has succeeded admirably in creating a cast of characters that any writer could be proud of, and especially of absolutely nailing a complex relationship between the two principle characters. In August McCrae and Captain Woodrow Call, McMurtry has gifted us with two of the best and most complete characters ever written, let alone loosed upon the Western landscape. Add to them a host of other rich characters, and an understanding of the trials and dangers of a complete north-to-south transverse of America, and you've got Lonesome Dove.

Desperately moving, though often humorous, this is American writing at its very best. Despite its length, it's a quick read. That's probably true because, as other reviewers here have said, once you begin this beautiful book it will accompany you everywhere you go until it's finished.

Reading this book is was one of the best experiences of my life. Truely it soaks into your soul and becomes a part of who you are. Its is something that you never forget. How it made you feel. Each of the characters and how you still pull for them despite their fictional exsistance. Physically it has its effect on you as well. Especially since you have to put it down to wipe your eyes many times through out. Read! Experience! Enjoy!

New Favorite.......2007-09-05

My husband read this some 16-17 years ago and told me I should read it one day. Well, I just read it and Lonesome Dove is now one of my top 5 favorite books ever. I absolutely loved it. It was truly sad at the end, all those characters were with me for those wonderful days of reading and now I'm done. I'll just have to read it again....

I read this book about 15 years ago, and I never read another western since. Nothing can measure up to this masterpiece. Even though it started out slowly and I almost gave it up, I stayed with it and I am so glad that I did. This is a true classic.

I found this book a little slow at the start but I'm glad I persevered. This is a magnificent novel. One of the best I've read in years.

Lonesome Dove.......2002-12-04

Lonesome Dove is one of the best books I have ever read. It has drama, action, love and everything that makes a good book good. The story begins with the author describing the characters and the story, and you really can connect with the characters. The main character is Gus McCrae, an ex Texas Ranger who is very lazy, and loves to drink. Despite this, he is an excellent ranger and his name is known all throughout America. The other main character is Call. He is a hard working, stubborn man who doesn't like ot talk alot. The story goes on from there. I recomend this book for advanced readers, who want a spellbinding story.

Outstanding, exciting & entertaining account of early Texas.......1998-07-15

I have read "Dead Man's Walk", "Comanche Moon","Lonesome Dove" and am now starting "Streets of Larado". My only disappointment is that the books don't contain a map depicting the locations of the major events. I wish the author could post one, so I can track the events and better relate to the actual locations. I loved the books- I grew up in West Texas and can identify with much of the landscape descriptions.

Larry McMurtry has an easy-going, though smart, style, that I identify with deeply. He doesn't try to pummel you with big words and confusing sentences. He writes like it feels.

THE LAST PICTURE SHOW was set in a town about a hundred miles from where I live. Like all Texas towns, after the Korean War, television killed the down town area along with the picture shows. Larry was able to capture the smell of hot pop corn and hot bodies pressed against one another. Back before that war, young men had little more on their minds than how they could earn enough money after football pratice so they could take the beauty queen out - and sometimes, the football coach's wife. When the retard was killed by a fast truck, an era ended. If you are in Archer City, visit Larry's rare book store. You can pick up bargains for $5 to $1,000
