Book Description
This book contains the proceedings of the International Astronomical Union Colloquium no. 195, held in Torino, Italy in 2004. The meeting investigated the formation of galaxies within a full cosmological context, focusing on the outer regions of galaxy clusters. The observed correlation of optical and radio properties of galaxies with their environment indicates that the formation and evolution of galaxies is intimately linked to the formation of large scale structure. With chapters written by leading authorities in the field, this timely volume investigates the role of the environment in determining the properties of galaxies. It describes the distribution of matter and galaxies on the largest scales in the Universe, the processes of cluster and galaxy formation, their role and interplay. This is a valuable collection of review articles for professional astronomers.

Book Description
First published in 1870, Venus in Furs gained for its author both notoriety and a degree of immortality when the word "masochism"--derived from his name--entered the psychiatric lexicon. The novel describes the sexual obsessions of Severin von Kusiemski, a European nobleman with the desire "to be the slave of a woman." Severin finds his ideal of voluptuous cruelty in the merciless Wanda von Dunajew.
Not simply a lurid tale of sexual perversion, nor a Victorian fantasy of antique decadence, Venus in Furs is a passionate and powerful portrayal of one man's struggle to enlighten and instruct himself and his world in the realm of desire. Influential on Freud, Thomas Mann, and Arthur Schnitzler, Venus in Furs remains a classic literary statement on sexual submission and control.
Download Description
Leopold von Sacher-Masoch was born in Lemberg, Austrian Galicia, on January 27, 1836. He studied jurisprudence at Prague and Graz, and in 1857 became a teacher at the latter university. He published several historical works, but soon gave up his academic career to devote himself wholly to literature. For a number of years he edited the international review, Auf der Hohe, at Leipzig, but later removed to Paris, for he was always strongly Francophile. His last years he spent at Lindheim in Hesse, Germany, where he died on March 9, 1895. In 1873 he married Aurora von Rumelin, who wrote a number of novels under the pseudonym of Wanda von Dunajew, which it is interesting to note is the name of the heroine of Venus in Furs. Her sensational memoirs which have been the cause of considerable controversy were published in 1906. During his career as writer an endless number of works poured from Sacher-Masoch's pen. Many of these were works of ephemeral journalism, and some of them unfortunately pure sensationalism, for economic necessity forced him to turn his pen to unworthy ends. There is, however, a residue among his works which has a distinct literary and even greater psychological value. His principal literary ambition was never completely fulfilled. It was a somewhat programmatic plan to give a picture of contemporary life in all its various aspects and interrelations under the general title of the Heritage of Cain. This idea was probably derived from Balzac's Comedie Humaine. The whole was to be divided into six subdivisions with the general titles Love, Property, Money, The State, War, and Death. Each of these divisions in its turn consisted of six novels, of which the last was intended to summarize the author's conclusions and to present his solution for the problems set in the others. This extensive plan remained unachieved, and only the first two parts, Love_ and _Property, were completed. Of the other sections only fragments remain. The present novel, Venus in Furs, forms the fifth in the series, Love. The best of Sacher-Masoch's work is characterized by a swift narration and a graphic representation of character and scene and a rich humor. The latter has made many of his shorter stories dealing with his native Galicia little masterpieces of local color.

An Interesting Foray into Relationship Ideas.......2007-05-28
Leopold von Sacher-Masoch is the root for the term masochism and he portrays this in his novel 'Venus in Furs' by depicting the personal discovery of a young man whose relationship takes a turn when he realizes he wants to stay with his "venus" no matter the consequences. This devolves into his own urge to be treated badly by his lover, and results in his ultimately getting exactly what he wished for.
Told from the point of view of the man when he is older, he tells the story to another young man as a lesson to avoid suffering the pains he has suffered. Told with fascinating language and imagery, it is a book that offers an understanding of the source of the term "masochism" and provides a nice short story in and of itself.
I loved it.......2006-11-10
This is probably one of the best books I've ever read. I devoured it. A lot of people compare Leopold Von Sacher-Mosoch to The Marquis de Sade, but this novel was tragically romantic. I would compare it to something like Wuthering Heights.
Ground Breaking for the Era .......2005-12-15
Leopold von Sacher-Masoch manages to illustrate a deep sexual fantasy and moralize at the same time. The author artfully shows the reader the pain endured by Severin, the main character, and the twisted pleasure obtained from it. The obsession over furs is just one aspect of his pain-pleasure complex. It seems that von Sacher-Masoch, like Sade, oversimplifies complex feelings through autobiographical characters. However, unlike Sade's de Franval, the main character seems open to the possibility that this "deviant behavior" isn't perfection, but the manifestation of a personal problem dealt with in an unhealthy way. He seems to have enough of an open mind to "learn."
I highly recommend this novella and think any reader interested in Erotica at all will enjoy it.
Less interesting than the older translations.......2005-11-30
The Penguin Classics version of "Venus in Furs" is elegant, but doesn't engage the reader in the 19th century weirdeness of the book in the same way its contemporary translators managed to do. My old copy came (originally) from a book club that clearly catered to the tastes of fin du ciecle pornography fans, with end-papers containing ads that (essentially) said "If you liked this, you'll love..." books that, 20 years ago were considered genuine classics - Sade, Diderot, et al. Then, as now, Sacher-Masoch's writing did not belong in such company as literature, but merely as an exploration of sexuality (in the way that Sade's "Justine" may reasonably regarded as literature, whle the "120 Days" is not).
To regard this as a "classic" in literary terms is a mistake. It is a historical oddity and one best read in a period translation rather than one which - however inadvertently - smooths and modernises it.
In essence, the best thing that can be said about the book (unless you're a student of obscure Victorian sexuality) is that it isnpired a wonderful Velvet Underground tune...
Interesting but redundant........2005-03-25
If you enjoy European classics this novel is worth a read. It took little time to get the idea of what this story is all about. There's description galore of what goes on but it is basically the same thing over and over with different dialogues. Less than one third way into the novel I was thinking "Enough already!" How many times can the reader learn that Leo wants Wanda to wip and abuse him? If reading like this makes you feel a rush of adrenaline go for it. "Whatever gets you through the night..." as the song goes.

Book Description
In his stunning essay, Coldness and Cruelty, Gilles Deleuze provides a rigorous and informed philosophical examination of the work of the late 19th-century German novelist Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Deleuze's essay, certainly the most profound study yet produced on the relations between sadism and masochism, seeks to develop and explain Masoch's "peculiar way of 'desexualizing' love while at the same time sexualizing the entire history of humanity." He shows that masochism is something far more subtle and complex than the enjoyment of pain, that masochism has nothing to do with sadism; their worlds do not communicate, just as the genius of those who created them - Masoch and Sade - lie stylistically, philosophically, and politically poles a part.
Venus in Furs, the most famous of all of Masoch's novels was written in 1870 and belongs to an unfinished cycle of works that Masoch entitled The Heritage of Cain. The cycle was to treat a series of themes including love, war, and death. The present work is about love. Although the entire constellation of symbols that has come to characterize the masochistic syndrome can be found here - fetishes, whips, disguises, fur-clad women, contracts, humiliations, punishment, and always the volatile presence of a terrible coldness - these do not eclipse the singular power of Masoch's eroticism.
Customer Reviews:
A lot to learn.......2005-10-08
For those who want to become acquainted with the deepest mysteries of mind and their relationship to behavior, not only sexual, this book is indispensable.
Not So Painful.......2003-04-11
For those who have tried their hand at Deleuze's other works--notably _A Thousand Pleateus_ and _Anti-Oedipus_--the title of my review will completely make sense. In this essay, Deleuze presents an engaging arguement about the development of the Oedipal complex and its relation to masochism. Basically, in the final stage of Freud's Oedipus the son is meant to internalize an identification with the father. In revolt he engages in the masochistic drama--a desperate attempt to re-enter the early stage of identification with the mother. By engaging in Masoch's drama, the woman becomes the subject's mother, and she proceeds to ritualistically beat the father out of the son. After all, dad is the one guilty of forcing the two apart in the first place. But this woman, this actress playing the mother, is certainly not a "sadist"; she herself is a masochist, because masochism has by this point proven to be an entire setting--an entire life--all of the characters, tools, words, rituals and scripted parts involved therein.
Contract, ritual, drama and fear combine to show us complexities of human expressions of violence, care, sexuality and the inter-relation between these three. I do not understand why this book has not recieved as much attention as some of Deleuze's others; its brilliance and accessibility--packaged of course with the eloquent and important _Venus in Furs_--make it well worth your time and money.
man oh man!!!.......2002-09-12
this is HOT stuff!!!do yourself a favor and get yer mitts on this one!!!
More than meets the eye.......2002-03-04
This refers to the book, Venus in Furs, not the essay by Deleuze. I loved this book. Not because I'm some psycho who enjoys pain, but because it tastefully deals with an issue that is too often either misrepresented as some libertine taboo or dealt with in a clinical way. Instead you have a story that deals with love in a different way than a typical Danielle Steele romance novel or a "boy meets girl," sappy drugstore paperback. And while it deals with passionate cruelty it, unlike books by Sade, captures unbridled desire and an inflamed heart. It is truly a great work of literature, easily comparable to "The Sorrows of Young Werther" by Goethe.
If you like sappy romance stories, buy something else. If you want an intriguing love story full of the passion of life and the strumming of the stings of emotion, read away.

Good artwork.......2003-10-08
Again Guido has taken the erotic story of emanuelle and added something to it. His art portrarys what is in the mind of the young emanuelle while she is in the exotic loacations.
It is not a graphic sex book but at the same time it leaves very little to the imagination.
Best of Guido Crepax.......2000-05-08
This hardcover volume is the definitive collection of Guido Crepax's erotic comics. The inventive page layouts and the expressive line work are beautifully reproduced on high quality, glossy paper. There's so much wonderful material here it might even be too much of a good thing...Crepax overload. Be sure to check out the companion "O" volume, both are top-notch productions.
Customer Reviews:
Pedagogy of Concepts.......2003-02-06
This is a very good introduction for those who want to understand how Deleuze works and understands the thought of others. One thing is that he extracts from literature a solution to psychoanalytic problem. To do this he deconstructs the concepts of Sadism and Masochism which are found together in psychoanalysis (not exactly freud). Meanwhile he rebuilds the concept of Masochism following Sacher Masoch himself, especially using the help of his wife Wanda (important book to follow Deleuze's thought). This is what he calls in his book "What is philosophy?", a Pedagogy of Concepts, for from here he will extract future aspects of the chapter "Body without Organs" of his book "Thousand Plateau". He reads Masoch not to explain Masoh, but to explain Deleuze.
