Description:
A novel simple on-line emulsion formation system for multi-element analysis by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) was developed. A laboratory made magnetic-stirring micro-chamber was used for continuous edible emulsification with Triton X-100 and for subsequent introduction of the emulsion into ICP-AES. The optimum concentration of oil in emulsion for maximum sensitivity was 50% (v/v). The performance of the system was demonstrated for Ag, Al, B, Ba, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, In, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Tl and Zn determination in olive, sunflower and corn oil. Good agreement was found between calibration curves for oil emulsion and aqueous ones for the most of the investigated spectral lines. The calibration curves for each element were linear at least up to 1.0mgl^-^1 and the correlation coefficients were ranged between 0.991 and 0.999. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of olive oil sample and compared with ETAAS-wet digestion method. No significant differences were observed between the two methods.

A flow injection analysis system for on-line preconcentration and simultaneous determination of Bi^3^+, Cd^2^+, Co^2^+, Cu^2^+, Fe^3^+, Ni^2^+, Pb^2^+ and Zn^2^+ in aqueous samples by inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-atomic emission spectrometry with a charge coupled detector is described. The preconcentration of analytes is accomplished by retention of their chelates with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate in aqueous solution on a solid phase containing octadecyl silica in a minicolumn. Methanol, as eluent, is introduced into the conventional nebulizer of the ICP instrument. The effects of different parameters, including preconcentration flow rate (equal to sample flow rate (SR)), eluent flow rate (ER), weight of solid phase (W) and eluent loop volume (EV), were optimized by the super-modified simplex method. The optimum conditions were evaluated to be SR 7.2mlmin^-^1, ER 3.5mlmin^-^1, W of 100mg and EV of 0.8ml. An enrichment factor of 312.5 for each analyte was obtained. The detection limits of the proposed method for Bi^3^+, Cd^2^+, Co^2^+, Cu^2^+, Fe^3^+, Ni^2^+, Pb^2^+ and Zn^2^+ were evaluated as 1.3, 1.0, 0.8, 0.3, 14.7, 0.5, 5.5 and 0.1ngl^-^1, respectively. The effect of several metal ions on percent recovery was also studied. The method was applied to the recovery of these heavy metals from real matrices and to the simultaneous determination of these cations in different water samples.

Description:
The goal of this study was to identify and quantify particles emitted from railway traffic. For that purpose PM10 samples were collected near a busy railway line using a wind direction and speed controlled sampling equipment consisting of five devices. Measurements taken perpendicular to the railway lines at 10, 36 and 120m distance enable an identification and separation of particles caused by the railway traffic from background particles. Morphology and chemistry of more than 11,000 particles were analysed by computer controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM). Based on chemical composition five particle classes are defined and assigned to their sources. The mass of the individual particles is determined by multiplying their volumes, calculated based on their morphology with a density assigned specifically to each particle class. The density of the particle classes is derived from their chemical composition. To estimate the PM10 contributions of the railway lines, the mass of PM10 at 120m (background, not influenced by the railway lines) is subtracted from the mass of PM10 at 10m. The emissions of the railway lines are dominated by 'iron' particles, which contribute 2.9@mgm^-^3 or 67% to the railway related PM10. In addition, 'aluminium' and 'calcium' particles contribute also to the railway related PM10 (1.0@mgm^-^3 or 23% for the 'aluminium' and 0.4@mgm^-^3 or 10% for the 'calcium' particles). These particles are assigned to abrasion of the gravel bed and re-suspension of mineral dust. Long-term gravimetric results of the contribution of iron to the mass of railway related PM10 from a study performed earlier at the same site are in good agreement with the data presented in this study.

A novel and simple hydride generator has been developed. The hydride generator has good stability and high gas liquid separation efficiency. The generator serves as an interface of capillary electrophoresis (CE) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). This device eliminates the nebulization step and overcomes the common problem of suction flow resulting from the use of nebulization gas in ICP. Selenium compounds that were separated by CE were converted into the corresponding volatile hydrides, followed by ICP-AES measurement. The effects of the concentration of the hydride generating reagents (HCl and NaBH"4), the carrier gas flow rate, and heavy metal interference on Se emission intensity were discussed. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of peak area, based on six determinations of 50ngmL^-^1 standard of Se^I^V and Se^V^I, were 1.5% and 1.8%, respectively. The detection limits (3@s) of peak area were 2.1ngmL^-^1 and 2.3ngmL^-^1 for Se^I^V and Se^V^I, respectively. Speciation analysis of inorganic Se^I^V and Se^I^V species using the HG-CE-ICP-AES system was demonstrated in tap and river water samples.

Goethean science in the animal world.......2000-08-07

Ernst Michael Kranich has written an interesting book on the possibility of evolution without necessarily having to be of the Darwinian type. Even though his work is predated in the main by Wolfgang Schad (Man and Mammals) who also provides a far deeper analysis, it does add some new aspects to Goethean science.

Goeathen science or in other words the way of science developed by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (the famous German poet) is different in the sense that it stays with the phenomenon rather than going outside of it. Goethe stresses this by statements such as "the phenomenon is already theory" using the Greek meaning of theory rather than the modern meaning which almost dissociates itself from the phenomenon under question. As such this approach is purely objective in the true sense of scientific, to get an idea of the full aspects of such a science in a very clear and methodical way devoid of speculation read the book by Henri Bortoft, The Wholeness of Nature, which can expand on this idea.

Kranich uses the Goethean approach to look carefully at the animal world and its developments such as horses skeletons and the organ arrangement in mammals, the important aspect is that he brings out the wholeness of the animal in question rather than an analysis of each part. The animal is seen whole rather than constructed of parts. For example does the word arm or hand having any meaning when abstracted from the body it is connected to, and so too for the organs and structure of the animal. This approach of Kranich is both satisfactory in a very human way and yet does not sacrifice scientific rigour.

Given the comments above I must note that not all of the book was as well written as I would have liked, its possible the translation from the German was not the best perhaps because of the concepts used in German which may have had untranslatable aspects. But I also felt that at times the science was on shaky ground never feeling quite secure in Kranich's argument and always feeling that either there was more to do to make one really believe it or that the opposing arguments from accepted science could not be fully dealt with.

Nonetheless a satisfying book and a good lead into Goethean approaches to science.

Nonreligious Expose of Current Evolutionary Theories.......2000-05-23

If you think that only those with religious motivations find current evolutionary theories inadequate, this book is for you. These German scholars demonstrate that gradual accumulations of mutations does not add up to biological novelty. The abrupt appearance of fossils in the fossil record, as noted by the German paleontologist Otto Schindewolf decades ago, is also recounted. The work of Michael Denton is also mentioned.

I bought this selection because of the title, which credits the stories to Mark Twain. I would have loved ten of his stories! Unfortunately, the selections for inclusion (other than Mr. Twain's) were some of the poorest examples of American literature that I have read. They weren't even good irony; they were just depressing. I'm sure there could be a great collection of American short stories; these were certainly not that.

I bought this and a few other books on CD for my husband who has a bit of dislexia (sp?) and has trouble reading. He was so engrossed in the stories that if he were near the end of one, he would sit in the driveway and listen until it was done. So then, by proxy, I know all of the stories and it seems like a wonderful 'read'. This is a perfect gift for someone who enjoys fine adventure literature by fine authors.

Muy bueno a mi parecer, cuando lo empece no lo pude dejar, finalmente me animo a ver las cosas de otra manera en especial en este momento donde mi vida necesita respuestas y me encanto eso de reencontrarse a uno mismo, y aunque las cosas no terminen como uno quiere, aprendemos que la vida es mucho mas que eso, y es un viaje interminable.

Nunca he sido fanatico de Coelho. Siempre me parecio absurdo su estilo de 'guerreros de luz' y cosas sobrenaturales. Sin embargo empece a leer este libro por casualidad, un dia bien aburrido y caliente en una libreria de Miami. Era el unico libro en espanol y por eso lo compre. Al principio el libro atrapa con la sospecha y la especulacion de la esposa desaparecida. Luego el analisis de la sociedad y el comportamiento social que deriva en la busqueda interior del personaje por hallar una explicacion razonable a lo que no tenia logica alguna. Si todo estaba bien...por que todo cambio?. Como decia mi abuela: si funciona bien, no lo arregles. Pero todo se trastorna, todo se mueve, y somos tan cobardes, tan ciegos y tan irresponsables con nuestra vida y la de los demas que no nos atrevemos a ser felices porque creemos que eso hace infelices a otros.
Quede impresionado con el libro. Pense al principio que no pasaria del primer capitulo y al bajar del avion lo dejaria en la silla. Pueda que desista como yo de leer el libro cuando vaya a la mitad. Ese es un puente necesario para entender el final. Invierta en el libro. Y si tiene suenos como yo y tiene pareja estable, hagase un regalo y regaleselo a ese ser especial. Tal vez lo entienda a usted mejor cuando decida hacer de su vida lo que siempre quiso que fuera.
Nunca termine de leer 'El Alquimista'. Me parecio pesado y demasiado filosofico para una epoca en la que pasaba del Rock a las depresiones juveniles mientras sobrevivia a la euforia de las hormonas. A lo mejor ahora tras esta experiencia me decida a leerlo.
