Book Description
This book demonstrates how managers can be more effective in gathering and processing performance information about subordinates, making ratings on performance appraisals and multisource feedback surveys, and feeding back this information in a way that is nonthreatening and leads to productive changes in behavior. It also shows how employees can gather, accept, and use meaningful performance information from appraisals, surveys, and informal discussions to change their own behavior. In doing so, the volume suggests how human resource practitioners and training professionals can help managers give and use feedback more effectively.
Five years have elapsed since the first edition of Job Feedback was published. This revision covers the following updates in the field:
*new theory and research on organizational performance management;
*new methods for linking strategic planning with individual goal setting and development;
*the emergence of globalization and cross-cultural factors affecting performance evaluations and the use of technology to collect performance data; and
*new chapters on person perception, multisource feedback, team feedback, and feedback in multicultural organizations.

Just about Feedback.......2000-06-14
Finally, a book devoted to just feedback! It's about time. London's book describes the characteristics of feedback, sources of feedback, giving feedback, using feedback and way to enhance the effectiveness of feedback. London uses a model to help you understand how the content and process you use can effect of the feedback delivered and the reaction you will get from the recipient. There is also indepth information regarding how people process information (which we know effects the message)and how to be prepared for different responses you may incounter. There is informaiton on performance appraisals and how to turn that process from montitoring/judgement to employee developer and coach. This book also discussed organizational culture and it's effects on feedback. If you get one book that covers all aspects of feedback - this is the one! Every manager/leader of people and teams needs this book.

Book Description
This book aims to extend the range of application of analytical and semi-analytical techniques of classical celestial mechanics for the case of motion in highly eccentric orbits. The technique, developed by the authors and described in detail here, is based on the traditional mean, true, or eccentric anomalies with the elliptic anomaly and corresponding Fourier expansions for Jacobi elliptic functions. It makes it possible to represent more effectively the motion of celestial objects in highly eccentric orbits, which until now has been studied mostly using numerical integration. The specific methodology described in the book is linked closely to mathematical software used widely in the West, and is therefore of relevance to researchers worldwide.
Primarily addressing itself to readers who are not satisfied by the possibilities of numerical integration and who are interested in studying highly eccentric orbits in more depth using analytical and semi-analytical techniques, this text is of specific

Book Description
Hyper-structured molecules are topologically well-defined molecules in two or three dimensions and are expected to show novel quantum effects in the molecules themselves or in molecular sequences. This book, covering the supramolecular chemistry and characterisation of hyper-structured molecules, provides an invaluable resource on the design and synthesis of topologically controlled molecules such as dendritic polymers, and on ways to handle them using techniques such as photon scanning tunnelling microscopy. The book presents a comprehensive discussion of the real application of hyper-structured molecules to organic quantum devices for molecular electronics, photonics and spinics and should be of interest to all researchers working in supramolecular chemistry and molecular electronics.

Book Description
There are many separate groups working in gut biology, and they feel that the gut is an excellent model for investigating general problems in differentiation, growth control, stem cell biology, and regeneration and adaptive responses. There is a pressing need to define the objectives of the next 5 to 10 years, and the meeting, Part III of the Gastroenterology Symposia Freiburg 1996 (Falk Symposium No. 94), held in Freiburg, Germany, October 25-26, brought together some of these groups with a view to identifying areas which are not being utilized and need to be exploited, such as transgenic and knockout approaches, retrovirus delivery systems, and model cell/tissue systems.
The main themes of the book are gastrointestinal development and differentiation, gut stem cell biology, and the control of gut growth in normal and abnormal situations. Basic research findings are related to clinical situations, and the book will appeal not only to gut cell and molecular biologists, but also to gastroenterologists interested in the potential applications of these subject areas.
Book Description
Complete in one volume, the five books that created the modern American crime novel
In a few years of extraordinary creative energy, Dashiell Hammett invented the modern American crime novel. In the words of Raymond Chandler, "Hammett gave murder back to the kind of people that commit it for reasons, not just to provide a corpse.... He put these people down on paper as they were, and he made them talk and think in the language they customarily used for these purposes."
The five novels that Hammett published between 1929 and 1934, collected here in one volume, have become part of modern American culture, creating archetypal characters and establishing the ground rules and characteristic tone for a whole tradition of hardboiled writing. Drawing on his own experiences as a Pinkerton detective, Hammett gave a harshly realistic edge to novels that were at the same time infused with a spirit of romantic adventure. His lean and deliberately simplified prose won admiration from such contemporaries as Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, and William Faulkner.
Each novel is distinct in mood and structure. Red Harvest (1929) epitomizes the violence and momentum of his Black Mask stories about the anonymous detective the Continental Op, in a raucous and nightmarish evocation of political corruption and gang warfare in a western mining town. In The Dain Curse (1929) the Op returns in a more melodramatic tale involving jewel theft, drugs, and a religious cult. With The Maltese Falcon (1930) and its protagonist Sam Spade, Hammett achieved his most enduring popular success, a tightly constructed quest story shot through with a sense of disillusionment and the arbitrariness of personal destiny. The Glass Key (1931) is a further exploration of city politics at their most scurrilous. His last novel was The Thin Man (1934), a ruefully comic tale paying homage to the traditional mystery form and featuring Nick and Nora Charles, the sophisticated inebriates who would enjoy a long afterlife in the movies.
Customer Reviews:
The Maltese Falcon.......2006-11-07
An intriguing plot with just the right blend of wry humor, sex and secrets.
Very exciting and convenient.......2006-06-19
I do like these stories, though they are so rough! It is very helpful to be able to have them all together in this one good volume, I think. But it is dangerous to read them late at night, because you either get too excited to sleep, or you dream of bad men with their car headlamps switched off in the dark!
The first benchmark.......2005-08-19
Very nice edition of the master's novels. In addition to my love of Hammett's prose, I am fascinated by the subtle political aspects of his work: he was the first crime writer to question the status quo so frankly. K. C. Constantine said, "The crime writer is society's stoolie", and Hammett is still a reliable informant.
A classic.......2004-08-26
"A Classic"
What makes a classic? In the case of a detective novel, it is a book that can be read and reread and that gives pleasure on each reading. The Maltese Falcon is now seventy-five years old, yet it continues to amaze, to amuse, to engage.
You may know the plot, but you still can't remember every twist and turn of the unfolding story, and you are surprised by details here and there you did not previously notice, or had forgotten. You may know the principal characters-the cynical detective Sam Spade, the seductive adventuress Brigid O'Shaughnessy, the exotic Joel Cairo, the crafty Caspar Gutman. But they are so expertly drawn, so powerfully realized, that you learn more about them on each reading.
You may already have committed some of the most famous lines of dialog to heart ("The cheaper the crook the gaudier the patter"-- "You're good. You're very good. It's chiefly your eyes, I think, and that throb you get into your voice when you say things like `Be generous, Mr. Spade'"). Yet you continue to discover more, and you continue on each reading to relish the bite, the humor, the intelligence of Hammett's prose.
It's practically impossible to read this book without thinking of the motion picture starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet. Don't try. John Huston's script departs here and there from the story line of the novel, but not in any serious way. Most of the changes are efforts to streamline the story and make it fit the standard (for 1941) length of a screenplay. And the best lines spoken by Bogart, Astor, Lorre, and Greenstreet are pure Hammett. The movie is true to the spirit of the book, and if you are familiar with both you can love them both.
At age seventy-five, The Maltese Falcon is a classic, and there is good reason to believe that in another seventy-five years it will still be one.
Well worth the time........2004-07-28
I have read all five novels at least twice. Will go for three times when winter arrives.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating Mysteries.......2001-03-16
Dashiell Hammett's novels have fascinating mystery plots and the essential elements of film noir: dangerous dames, wise-cracking "ops" (= operative = P.I.), cagey crime orgasnisers, and trigger-happy "muggs".
Hammett's novels include The Maltese Falcon (#3) and The Thin Man(#5), which are great films but they are missing some of the intrigue of the real stories. For instance, there's another angle of Sam Spade involving Iva Archer that doesn't quite make it to the film version . . . .
The Red Harvest (#1) reveals shocking corruption in city politics as the Continental Op (literally) wades through bootleg liquor and tries to keep track of the soaring body count.
The Dain Curse (#2) is a confusing compound of drug use, a religious cult, and a family's vicious criminal record. It isn't a neat, fictionalised detective story, but rather the slough of deceit Hammett must have seen while working for Pinkerton.
The Glass Key (#4) also deals with city-level political corruption, but there's another message: think of trying to use a glass key . . . .
When fortifying myself for a six hour layover and a trans-Atlantic flight, I stumbled upon this book quite by accident, but I couldn't have made a better choice. Hammett's novels make excellent reading: interesting plots, clever wording and some of those "lines" film noir can't do without. I can't resist giving an example "line" (from The Glass Key):
"'A copper found you crawling on all fours up the middle of Colman Street at three in the morning leaving a trail of blood behind you.'
'I think of funny things to do,' Ned Beaumont said."

Customer Reviews:
a very long crisis pregnancy pamphlet .......2007-09-26
Francine Rivers is by far one of my favorite Christian novelists. I have read her Mark of the Lion : A Voice in the Wind, An Echo in the Darkness, As Sure As the Dawn (Vol 1-3)series at least three times. It's phenomenal! And this summer I read, for the first time, Redeeming Love, an instant new favorite which I will likely read again and again. I didn't hesitate to buy The Atonement Child. She's a great author and I was confident I would like anything she wrote. I was wrong.
This book centers on a young college student named Dynah. She's engaged to the campus hottie, who is studying to be a pastor. Life is wonderful until one night changes everything. On her way home from work, she is raped. She soon discovers she is pregnant as a result. The book twists and turns with the reactions of her friends and family members. What advice do they give? What decision will she make? Who will support her in that decision? Is an unborn life still valuable if it comes from such horrific beginnings? Can an abortion have lasting effects?
I love the controversial topic of this book. The plot is fantastic, but the delivery leaves much to be desired. The dialog was trite. I often felt I was reading a very long crisis pregnancy pamphlet rather than a novel. Much of the book was predictable and several of the characters were poorly developed. Some seemed mere shadows rather than true characters with key parts in this story.
Final Thoughts: Dissappointing. If you want more information on pro-life arguments, this is a good book to read. If you want to lose yourself in a novel, pick up one of her other books.
eye opener.......2007-09-14
The Atonement Child is the story of Dynah, a typical college student. One day after work, Dynah's life is turned upside down when she is raped. Things only get worse when she finds out she is pregnant. She then begins to lose everything that she held dear. As her family is torn apart, she ponders over what she should do. Should she hold fast to her faith and what she believes, or should she have an abortion? Ultimately, it is up to Dynah to decide.
Francine Rivers is an accomplished writer. She has written numerous titles and won many awards. After attending the University of Nevada, Rivers had a successful writing career in secular writing, but in 1986 after becoming a born-again Christian, Rivers wrote Redeeming Love, her most popular book. She has also received acclaim for her three-book series the Mark of the Lion. Her books range from historical fiction to children's books. Her most recent project is The Sons of Encouragement Series.
Rivers always does an excellent job of developing her characters in her stories. The Atonement Child is no exception. She weaves the story in such away that the reader experiences almost every possible emotion as Dynah experiences hardships. It is very easy for the reader to be swept up into the story and even be reduced to tears many times. There is also a hint of suspense as readers anticipate what is going to happen next.
This fictional account of a young girl's struggle through a crisis pregnancy stirs the emotions of every reader. It sheds light on a controversy that continues to plague American people and people all over the world today. It delves into the emotional and the spiritual aspects of abortion and takes the reader on an unforgettable journey. This book is not just another easy read. It will take readers to a place within themselves they have never known.
*****10 Stars*****.......2007-08-16
One of the best books I have ever read!
This book deals with abortion and may not be for you, so you be the judge.
I was skeptical when it was recommended to me, but "they" were right. This author dealt with the touchy issue in a wonderful way.
This is an EXCELLENT LOVE STORY.
The best Rivers novel!.......2007-07-18
If you haven't read this book, you are in for an outstanding read. I couldn't put this book down. Francine Rivers approach to the abortion issue is right on the money. I have passed this book to many of my friends and all have loved it and been changed by it.
book.......2007-03-12
Great book; should be a must read for all young girls and the parents of children who are pregnant and not married. Gives a great message of how the road of christianity is not easy.

Book Description
German Requiem recounts the haunted memory and experience of war as seen through a child's eyes, the most vulnerable and impressionable witness to man's inhumanity to man. Each poem is the crystallized image of a particular experience cast into narrative poetic form and impelled by powerful emotion. Collectively, the poems describe a psychic journey from loss, dislocation, and suffering through the healing catharsis of art, which transmutes all grief into beauty.
