Terminology for Allied Health Professionals.......2006-02-01
Being new to the healthcare field, I have very little knowledge of medical terminology and procedures. This book is incredibly informative in a way that is understandable to even a beginner. It's well written, with clear, concise terminology and has plenty of color illustrations to help make sense of what would otherwise be overwhelming to a non-clinical person.
MORE INFO THAN YOU MAY EVER NEED!.......2001-02-04
I am using this book right now in my Medical Terminology class and we are not using the whole book because I am not trying to be a Doctor or Nurse, but a Certified Medical Transcriptionist. Well, this book is impressive, to say the least. I am learning so much from the reading, the pictures, the 2 floppy disks and cassette tape that came with it. It is basically a textbook/workbook; there's a lot of review questions, etc. at the end of each chapter and also, on the floppies, there are sample tests and games to play to assist you in learning the material. Using the cassette tape has listening exercises on it so you can type along, as if the Doctor was dictating a letter and so you use it as dictation material and you can learn a lot of new medical terms that way, also. I don't think there could be a better book out there if you're wanting to learn Medical Terminology. I recommend it highly!
Book Description
This comprehensive workbook provides lessons to help students and practitioners learn the skills required for medical transcription fast and easy while assessing their knowledge. The workbook contains exercises for Continuing Education, Skills Refinement, Certification Preparation, and Employee Assessments in medical terminology, sentence structure, anatomy, laboratory medicine testing, and proofreading. The exercises use such fun and interactive techniques as medical crossword puzzles and medical records. Also included are articles on professional development and technology. The workbook, with an emphasis on many types of knowledge, is also applicable for medical coding/billing and medical assisting.

Book Description
An international conference entitled "Zdenek Kopal's Binary Star Legacy" was held on the occasion of the late Professor Kopal's 90th birthday in his home town of Litomyšl/Czech Republic and dedicated to the memory of one of the leading astronomers of the 20th century.
Professor Kopal, who devoted 60 years of his scientific life to the exploration of close binary systems, initiated a breakthrough in this field with his description of binary components as non-spherical stars deformed by gravity, with surfaces following Roche equipotentials. Such knowledge triggered the development of new branches of astrophysics dealing with the structure and evolution of close binaries and the interaction effects displayed by exciting objects such as cataclysmic variables, symbiotic stars or X-ray binaries.
Contributions to this conference included praise of the achievements of a great astronomer and personal reminiscences brought forward by Kopal's former students and colleagues, and reflected the state of the art of the dynamically evolving field of binary research, which owes so much to the pioneering work of Zdenek Kopal.

Book Description
Using small-town life as a springboard to explore the loftiest of ideas, Haven Kimmel’s irresistibly smart and generous first novel is at once a romance and a haunting meditation on grief and faith. Langston Braverman returns to Haddington, Indiana (pop. 3,062) after walking out on an academic career that has equipped her for little but lording it over other people. Amos Townsend is trying to minister to a congregation that would prefer simple affirmations to his esoteric brand of theology.
What draws these difficult—if not impossible—people together are two wounded little girls who call themselves Immaculata and Epiphany. They are the daughters of Langston’s childhood friend and the witnesses to her murder. And their need for love is so urgent that neither Langston nor Amos can resist it, though they do their best to resist each other. Deftly walking the tightrope between tragedy and comedy,
The Solace of Leaving Early is a joyous story about finding one’s better self through accepting the shortcomings of others.
Download Description
Langston Braverman does not come home to Haddington, Indiana, because she is searching for a simpler life. Having just walked out of her Ph.D. oral exams and abandoned the remains of a disastrous affair, she has retreated to her parents' attic to nurse a bruised heart and maybe even write a great American novel. It does not escape her attention that the town is abuzz with the death of her childhood friend, Alice, but not even this morsel of intrigue can rouse Langston from her self-imposed existential dilemma.
A few houses down Plum Street, Amos Townsend is obsessed with Alice's murder and his inability to stop it from happening. A preacher struggling with his role as a spiritual leader after suffering a profound crisis of faith, he finds comfort in helping Alice's two small girls, who have renamed themselves Immaculata and Epiphany. When the children claim to speak to the Virgin Mary in the backyard tree, Amos and Langston become adversaries in their attempts to protect the girls, failing to recognize that they are on the same side.
Told with remarkable wit and sweeping empathy, The Solace of Leaving Early is the story of finding our better selves through accepting the shortcomings of others. With gentle humor, beautiful prose, and a warm empathy for the buried wounds of the human heart, Haven Kimmel has created an unforgettable and wise debut.
Customer Reviews:
Better Than Zippy.......2007-08-11
Having previously trashed "A Girl Named Zippy," I had very low expectations for "The Solace of Leaving Early." Zippy made Kimmel famous, got her a spot on The Today Show, but Solace is much superior.
Amos Townsend is a thoughtful preacher suffering a crisis of fault in a small Indiana town. One of his parishioners has been murdered, leaving two daughters orphaned and witness to her death. Langston Braverman, a washed up PhD candidate caught in a haze of existential contemplation, has returned to childhood bedroom to hide from the world. Langston's wise and affecting Mother, AnnaLee, knows just the medicine the egocentric Langston needs. The orphan girls need guidance and AnnaLee won't rest until Langston starts thinking of someone other than herself. There's a quirky grandma, a pillar of strength father, and a town of oddballs so real I can attest to their existence (I'm from close to the same place as Kimmel). The story progresses as we find out, along with Langston, what happened to the girl's mother and the fate of the two orphans.
Kimmel certainly has a kind pen. There were so many passages of simple beauty in this little gem; I've a page full of quotes. One thing Kimmel does especially well is limiting words while keeping the most thoughtful of meaning. However, her characterization is a bit uneven. I hated Langston for the first half of the book and wanted to throw fire on Amos to get him excited. They were developing into nice little souls. And then she dropped the ball. The last third is too contrived, with a neat little bow and all. The plot is assisted by a `who-done-it.' There are just enough hints and secrets to keep us guessing as to the circumstances of the murder.
One imperfection in the novel is one of the things I found most interesting. Kimmel uses lofty philosophers and authors like adjectives. All the name-dropping can be distracting. Some might have difficulty believing that Indiana farmers sit around reading Kierkegaard and John Donne; but I know that not everyone in a small town is a peabrain. And her analogous use of lofty ideals does a good job juxtaposing the simplistic nature of small town life.
My favorite thing about the novel was Kimmel's faithful rendering of small town folks. They live their lives without question, in application and not theory. Langston's life has been one of theory, her Mother's one of application.
This novel is worth a look for anyone interested in the nuances of small town life or the human implications of our choices, consequences and flawed perceptions.
Lifetime TV Movie In Print.......2007-05-01
I picked up this book on the recommendation of a friend that described it as "reading like a poem."
While the language and flow of the book were easy to follow and smooth, the plot was extremely weak.
The whole thing reads like a Lifetime Movie and has all the hallmarks of such a movie:
Troubled girl leaves school
Small-town murder/suicide leaves orphaned children
Lonely pastor
Lonely pastor spars with troubled girl over care of orphaned children
Lonely pastor and troubled girl are left as guardians of orphaned children, fall in love, get married, raise orphaned children.
Sadly it has turned me off of Kimmel. I won't be reading anything else by her.
The Solace of Leaving Early.......2007-03-14
This novel was one of the best I've ever read. Having Haven come into one of my classes was amazing. She is very funny and talented. I would recommend this book to anyone, and if you get a chance to hear Haven speak, do it.
Go back to the drawing board, Ms. Kimmel!.......2007-01-22
This book is in such stark contrast to Haven Kimmel's delightful novel "A Girl Named Zippy" that I am finding it a chore to get through it. I am still not through it, but I think that I may have to say enough is enough and move on to a more rewarding piece of literature. I loved "A Girl Named Zippy" - the simplicity, the elegance of the sparseness of her words, Ms. Kimmel's humorous recollections of her childhood and life in a small town. This novel also takes place in a small town, but it's as if Ms. Kimmel is saying "I'm grown up now, so my first novel will be in a grown-up style" with lots of references to philosophers, religion, heavy literature, etc. Please Ms. Kimmel, go back to your roots and draw from what works for you - understatement.
Not Zippy, but wonderful too.......2006-06-26
I am struggling to find words to describe this book...I loved it. Langston Braverman, an ultra intelligent and academic young woman who walks out when in the final stages of her Phd. Returns home to live with her parents. Returns home to her small, Indiana hometown. Against her will, her life becomes entangled with two children, who have witnessed a murder, and the tortured church pastor. I don't want to give it away.
Langston is extremely bright and different. I did not understand most of her thoughts (the same could be said for the pastor, Amos), but I was not put off by this. They are two people who understand the esoteric writings of people who are way out of my league, but I accepted this and it did not take away from the story. I loved the way she spoke to people, so raw and honest--some would say bizarre.
A story about grief and love. The epilogue caused me to tear up. I was so moved by the outcome of this novel. I wish I could describe it better. I wish I could write like Haven Kimmel.
Book Description
" The Enneagram is an extraordinary framework for understanding more about ourselves. No matter from which point of view we approach it, we discover fresh conjunctions of new and old ideas." So writes Don Riso in this expanded edition of his classic interpretation of the Enneagram, the ancient psychological system used to understand the human personality. In addition to updating the descriptions of the nine personality types, Personality Types, Revised greatly expands the accompanying guidelines and, for the first time, uncovers the Core Dynamics, or Levels of Development, within each type. This skeletal system provides far more information about the inner tension and movements of the nine personalities than has previously been published. This increased specificity will allow therapists, social workers, personnel managers, students of the Enneagram, and general readers alike to use it with much greater precision as they unlock the secrets of self-understanding, and thus self-transformation.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful and educationional .......2007-08-12
This is one of my favorite reference books. Without getting all detailed about the contents, because the book description is accurate enough, I can say that this book has helped me many times in dealings with difficult people and also in analyzing my own behavior. I have never seen a personality profiling book so accurate before. I have never found an instance where I have not been able to classify someone as one of the 9 personality types with the correct "wing". Go get this book, if you are at all curious about how people work and what motivates them.
An Interesting Theory of Personality Types.......2007-03-10
The deduction of personality types is not an exact science, and those who criticize Riso in this regard are missing the boat. Riso, a Jesuit, has developed an interesting classification of personality types based on the Enneagram. He first traces the history of the Enneagram, then invites the reader to deduce which of nine personality types that s/he is. This is based on self-evaluation: "Which one word best describes me?"
Each one of the nine personality types has an average-person manifestation, a highly-developed manifestation, and a pathological manifestation. I will now focus on one of these personality types--the thinker. In Freudian terms, the thinker is believed by Riso to correspond to the oral-expulsive type. An average thinker may simply come across as a bright person. When pathological, the thinker may tend towards eccentric behavior or mania. But when highly-developed, the thinker may have an unusual ability to solve problems, and, at an extreme, be a gifted inventor.
A good resource.......2006-07-19
I approached the enneagram from MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) and this book has been a good companion many times.
The 9 levels of integration/disintegration will help you determine which way you are moving and let you correct your course at crucial moments of your life.
Awful, Do Not Buy This Book.......2006-05-24
The author finds fault with the traditional types of personality categorization systems because he claims they only look for abnormal behaviors and are too narrow and abstract.
He claims that there are nine basic personality types which themselves stem from an even more basic type. These types are:
1. the feeling type: motivator helper, and individualist
2. The instinctive type: peacemaker, leader, and reformer
3. The thinking type: investigator, loyalist, and ... forgot that one.
He gives no explanation as to why his view is correct, and why it should be based on the enneagram. And his historical overview of that symbol shows it has occult and origins and was used by a conartist to rip people off (but he doesn't say that.) Regardless of why he uses it, he is wrong in his conclusions. As one reviewer noted, the personality traits he assigns to these so called personality types are applicable to other personality types. I can go into great detail about this but I don't want ot melt anyones brain. The point is, his view is no better than a palm reader telling you that you are a charming person at times, sometimes get angry, but you do your best when you are happy. The author's personality type theory is that bad.
Although he does uses some biblical justification for his theory, he, incredibly, says that various negative traits are what make someone a leader or peacemaker, etc.. For example, he claims that peacemakers complacent and want to keep things they way they are. That is absurd. Complancency does not lead to peace and trying to keep things the way they are certainly does not always lead to peace. He even said Abraham Lincoln, a murderous war monger, was a good example of, get this, A PEACEMAKER!
The best part of this book is the historical backround of the enneagram, near the beginning.
Great in-depth information on the levels of each type, but lots of redundant material with their other books........2006-05-03
If you are a serious student of the Enneagram this is an important book to own because of the in-depth material on the different levels of each type and the dynamics of how ascent and descent work.
This book also contains good descriptions of each type, but they are often redundant with Riso and Hudson's other books. In other words, it appears there is a lot of recycling of information.
Riso and Hudson are pioneers because they have clinically validated the Enneagram model and mapped various DSM categories to levels and types. There work is credible and I have found it useful in coaching each type as well as for my own personal growth.
If you want a general book on the Enneagram, then I recommend Riso and Hudson's the "Wisdom of the Enneagram" as a better general reference. I also think Sandra Maitri's book, "The Spiritual Dimensions of the Enneagram" is incredible and a necessary compliment to the "Wisdom of the Enneagram" for those who want to go deeper into the spiritual aspects of the Enneagram.
I gave this book a four rating because of the redundancy with their other books and because it is not as well-organized in my opinion as the "Wisdom of the Enneagram." I also think their explanations can be clearer in places and that they do a better job in less space in describing the types in the "Wisdom of the Enneagram" as well.
