Too obvious for me.......2003-09-06

I think this is best for people who have some major blind spots when it comes to other people's responsibilities and to their own boundaries. Yes, it gives examples and solutions. But it all seemed obvious.
I don't think I had any "ah ha" moments. If you agree that it's for people with major blind spots, I think you'll agree it should address the readership as well, since such big blind spots generally come with other issues that can get in the way of following the advice in this kind of book.
In my corporate experience, it is usually the more subtle behaviors that don't get addressed and fester, or problems that are more systemic and pervasive as part of the company's culture. But The Addictive Organization it isn't. If it went farther, it could be a codependence recovery book about deeper changes that have to happen to deftly handle the situations it addresses.
If the folks that gave those five star reviews can come back a year later and say that their work lives were really changed, then I'd be more open to the idea that this book is relevant.

Not just a time management book.......2000-08-31

A lot of books about organizing only deal with time management. In this book, the author deals with other types of disorganization. I had to laugh when I read the part about the deceptive chaos creating boss. I now think of that former boss as only a guy with nothing more than a clean desk and a leather Day-Timer. On the surface, he looked organized, in reality, he was never prepared for many of the meetings.

Great Book!.......2000-04-25

Harriet Schechter's Conquering Chaos at Work is fun to read and very comprehensive. It covers different types of chaos creators and provides methods to deal effectively with these habits, whether they exist in ourselves or other people. In describing the way that people can contribute to unnecessary disorganization, the book does more than describe general behavior and various tips to overcome these tendencies - she gives interesting case histories as well. This is part of what makes it fun to read! It has just the right balance of substance and light-heartedness. I highly recommend it as an easy read that is well worth referring to again and again.

it is not a encyclopedia in the traditional description. it is more of a leisure read,concerning medical topics. with the expected diseases and historical figures, come the little quirks;the elephant man, zombies and midwifes. the index makes finding specifics difficult, but if you're looking for fun and weird facts to scare your friends, then this is the book for you.

First of all this is not a manual of anatomy, physiology or pathology. It's not a book to use as a home medical guide. It is a compendium of articles that relate to medicine, but there seems to be no overall focus to the book. There are many historical entries covering such topics as Greek Medicine, Nursing in Britain, medicine in Italy, the Plague, the Flying Doctors and the Sisters of Charity. Most medical specialties such as dermatology, neurology, gynecological oncology and obstetrics are given coverage.

There are a variety of articles on medical research, but none on the topic of research methodology in general. Although not a guide to medical diseases there are articles that do pertain to such specific ailments as diabetes, and sexually transmitted diseases. You will find philosophy represented here in an article on epistemology (the study of knowledge). There is also a section on religion, and the medical views of various sects and denominations. I found that the authors refrained from being critical of religious beliefs as they pertain to medicine. The article on Christian Science is a benign one. The article on Chiropractic is also quite gentle. Indeed the book states that Chiropractors tend to get to know their patients to a far greater extent than medical practitioners.

Again, this is a strange compendium of many different topics: hysteria; hypnotism; near-death experiences; mummies; and the pharmaceutical industries. Will this book fill any of your special needs? It is of value to me by simply being an interesting volume of medical articles that I often just read at random..

Oxford Illustrated Companion to Medicine.......2002-02-08

This book is dedicated to sir Ronald Bodley Scott (1906-1982), a family physician and specialist in internal medicine, who was affiliated with St Bartholomew's Hospital and appointed physician to King George VI and Queen Elisabeth II. Together with a collegue he conceived the idea of this companion, which was in its planning stage at the time of his death. The present companion is the 3rd edition. The three editors are wellknown physicians, Stephen Lock, a hematologist who edited the British Medical Journal from 1975-91, John M Last professor emeritus in epidemiology from the Univesrity of Ottawa and George Dunea, the chairman of nephrology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
This companion is not a standard encyclopedia, but rather a selection of more than 500 short papers by more than 200 authors on subjects from abortion to zombification. Each entry is connected to the historical perspective of medicine, relationship with culture or art and information on the persons behind.
It can be learned that autopsies are not without side effects. A certain Josef Kolletschka died of sepsis following an infection acquired after sustaining a wound during autopsy. It was the similarity of his illness and in patients with puerperal fever that led Ignaz Philip Semmelweiss (1818-65) to understand that puerperal fever was caused by infection. This Hungarian obstetrician, working at the Allgemeines Krankenhaus in Vienna observed that the maternal mortality was higher in the ward attended by students (that came directly from the dissection room to the ward) than in the ward attended by nurses. When he enforced hygiene the mortality fell from 9.95% to 1.3%. The administration did not like his ideas and he was forced to leave for Budapest, where he became professor of obstetrics in 1855. His ideas on hygiene (Die Aetiologie der Begriff und die Prophylaxis des Kindbettfiebers, 1861) was not received well and in 1865 he suffered from an mental breakdown and died from septicemia from a wound infection.
On the lighter side you will also find some nice quotations on the medical profession, like the one of Thomas Fuller (1609-61) on "physicians, who like beer, are best when they are old".
All in all, a book with a wealth of information on medicine and its history.

Required Reading For Adults.......2007-04-04

"The Death of Adam" is unapologetically written for folks who actually value the activity of thinking. Robinson's writing style, as with her novels, requires some adjusting. She actually expects us to hold a thought in our head as she rambles a bit as the muse of reflection gathers her thoughts, but her penetration is exquisite.

I am a Christian of conservative persuasion, though Robinson is not. There are points of departure in her thought that run counter to my own inclination. But Robinson's iron sharpened mine in distinct areas and I greatly profited by her thought. I have not found a better debunking of Darwinism (in contrast to evolution) written anywhere. Her insistence that people ought to actually read Calvin and Darwin and others before they ridicule or embrace them is refreshing in the extreme. Her winsome insistence that intellectual courage begins by standing against the "Petty Coercion" of faddish opinion takes the best thought that could be gleaned from Jean Paul Sartre (though she does not trace her thought there) and firmly takes it captive under a Christian banner. These essays are a reminder that people can think and a moral admonition that it is an activity we ought to undertake more often.

Warning: Robinson warns you up front that she will not stoop to using simplistic language when nuanced thought demands complex phrasing. If you are looking for "bumper sticker" philosophy you will not find it here. If you are up to the challenge of pondering what she says and why she says it as she does, the fruit is well worth the effort.

i read this collection of essays on the strength of MR's novel Housekeeping. it is very rare indeed to find prose as strong and elegantly written in 20th century america - mostly we must turn to emerson, thoreau, fuller, hawthorne, to find such good writing, which by definition must be elegant, exact and tuned to its own pitch, as this collection surely is. again, to compare this work with emerson, reading this is much like reading Nature for the first time. Maybe you will not agree with MR, but if you read her rightly, your disagreement will be your own, not your newschannel's or your professor's opinion. her essay on darwinism (as distinct from evolution) is a masterwork of radical liberalism.

"I really take Nitezsche to town." .......2006-04-25

"I really take Nietzsche to town"--this is a quote from Marilynne Robinson. I heard her say this once at a writer's workshop in Saratoga Springs shortly before this collection, The Death of Adam, was printed. Who would SAY such a thing? It's not that one cannot argue with Nietzsche's thought--but "take him to town"? One may recall Rush Limbaugh, for instance, who, whenever he is under fire for getting someone angry, responds, "That's because I'M RIGHT."

Her book never gets much more intelligent than her quote.

The reviewer who said Robinson has an axe to grind here was right! These essays are well written but often full of a grudging and largely uninformed conservative viewpoint. Like many books that espouse such views, this one seems to see itself as some kind of enlightening alternative to the "accepted" wisdom about contemporary science and morality. Bosh!

This book was written out of sheer discomfort. Robinson doesn't seem to have given writers such as Darwin and Nietzsche the kind of reading they deserve--that is, the type in which the reader does not immediately discount all ideas that seem like they will lead to undesirable consequences (Nietzsche and Darwin led to Hitler, that kind of tiresome cliche). Come now Marilynne, didn't we get enough of that kind of thing listening to the frat boys argue with the professor in Humanities Seminar back in freshman year? For one who sets out to undermine accepted wisdom, Robinson espouses it in ludicrous amounts.

If you don't happen to agree with Robinson already, most of her thinking will jump out as the usual smokescreen behind which essentially conservative thinkers carry out their specious assault on everything that makes them uncomfortable.

Tackling a Century's-Worth of Thinking.......2006-02-22

Marilynne Robinson, in this fascinating book, tackles a century's-worth of thinking, and comes out with hardly a scratch. In learned, clear-minded, and engaging essays, she does damage to assumptions, and provides convincing alternative views. Read it.

Apologia pro libris.......2004-12-14

How pretentious of me to think that I should defend someone as brilliant as Marilynne Robinson. Having sat under her masterful teaching at the University of Iowa, I can say with utter certitude that these negative reviews are not only wrong, they're downright pigheaded in their oblivion to Marilynne's topic and methods. Poor Mr. Conover of San Francisco seems never to have read anything other than the first chapter. And this deliberate blindness is matched perhaps only by his positively Martian ignorace of the existence of supply-side economists. The reviewer who recommends less Calvin and more Prozac obviously has never developed a taste for thoughtful writing, and thus sees obtuseness in a prose that only a century ago would have seemed deliberately humane and overtly accessible.

The pleasure of Marilynne's prose and thought is comparable perhaps only to the self-indulgence of chocolate. But this analogy fails when one considers the content--it's mostly a warning against priggish self-indulgence, a sharp reminder that we will only understand the problems of our time after we've recognised and owned up to our contributions to them. Marilynne is without doubt one of the few great mavericks of our time. If you read her even with the slight generosity you might show a common garden slug, you'll find yourself flat on your back, reeling from a solid wallop of sanity and--dare I say it?--human goodness.

Despite His Hydrocephalus Politics and Latest Duds, THIS IS CLANCY AT HIS BEST!.......2007-09-27

I do not like Tom Clancy. I despise his totalitarian amoral politics and I canNOT stand him slapping his readers with them in his latest oversized and underwritten duds.

However, Tom Clancy was once an EXCELLENT technothriller writer. He might not have invented the genre, yet he launched it into the stratosphere.

This is HIS BEST BOOK and it is actually very good.
The mid-80's Cold-War atmosphere, the paranoia, the double-agents, the clandestine methods and the hardware are all expertly presented.
Now, him being, well...Clancy there still are stereotypes and bigoted characters galore. Deciding to overcome this however, the reader can actually enjoy this one.

Do not judge CARDINAL OF THE KREMLIN based on his deteriorated career.

this is one of Clancy's better novels, it has a little of everything, Military, intel gathering in the field, counter-espionage, and CIA operations. It isnt a big Clark book but it is still good.

Moscow's CARDINAL........2006-06-22

The Cardinal of the Kremlin features a situation that could only been constructed by Clancy. The cold war is at its peak, and tensions are running high with both countries independently developing there own space laser systems. The Americans are doing fairly well and are advancing rapidly seeing as they know what it is that they are doing, but the Soviets are working with the best that they have and have already accidentally managed to create a working laser. CIA witnesses the laser blast and asks there inside man in the Soviet government CARDINAL to relay the info. It is now reveled that the CIA's inside man in the Kremlin is Colonel Filitov, the three-time hero of the Soviet Union and disgruntled patriot. But because CARDINALs courier is burned, they must retrieve their info some other way. The need Mary-Pat Foley to be a direct pick up with CARDINAL. The KGB catches them, but because Foley has diplomatic immunity she is deported but Filitov isn't so lucky. He is arrested. CIA knows what the Soviets do with spies so now they have to decide what to do about Filitov. Do they leave him to die or do they show loyalty to the agent that that loyalty provided information for over thirty years? The Cardinal of the Kremlin is a great book that is more Spy craft and ethics than action and gadgets.

This book really makes me sad that the Cold War is over and the Soviet-American struggle and intrigue is a thing of the past.

CIA operatives struggle to get a Russian spy for America out of the Soviet Union before he is executed. Sounds simple but it's not and it takes great effort on the part of all involved. The husband-wife CIA team are great at what they do and make exceptional characters that you really want to cheer for like it's a football game or something. I like the way Mary Pat portrays herself as a bimbo but is secretly the brains of the operation.

God, I miss the Cold War...

Abridged, but great for newbies.......2003-12-29

These three novels by Clancy were all excellent stories. If you are a true fan of Tom Clancy, do not let these take the place of reading the novels. However, I still enjoyed listening to the abridged version after reading his novels.

Those new to Tom Clancy should enjoy this series of stories, as all of them are intriguing. My introduction to Tom Clancy was through an audibook, and now I've read thousands of his printed pages. See for yourself.
