Description:
This research investigates the comparability and convergence of two sets of accounting standards from 1996 to 2002: United States' Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (U.S. GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The investigation involves a sample of companies from the People's Republic of China (PRC) that are listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). PRC companies traded on the NYSE generally prepare IFRS financial statements and provide a limited reconciliation to U.S. GAAP, creating a unique quasi-experimental opportunity to examine differences between two sets of accounting numbers produced by two different sets of accounting standards while holding the company constant. Comparability is measured by using Gray's index of comparability, and a set of measures are introduced to capture several dimensions of convergence over time in reported net income, net assets, return on net assets, and earnings per share. The evidence shows lack of comparability, caused largely by the revaluations of property, plant and equipment permitted under IFRS, but not permitted under U.S. GAAP. There is, however, substantial evidence of convergence over time.

Applying both the price-levels model and the lagged-price-deflated returns model, we investigated the incremental value relevance of the reconciliation of accounts from the Chinese Accounting Standards (CAS) to the International Accounting Standards (IAS) by those Chinese listed companies that have simultaneously issued A-shares and B-shares. In addition, we examined the usefulness of accounting numbers (earnings and book values) and their value relevance to the A- and B-share markets in China. The study finds that earnings and book values of owners' equity determined under CAS are more relevant accounting information for the purpose of determining the prices of A- and B-shares. The CAS-based earnings changes were reflected in stock returns in the B-share market, while the CAS-based earnings were closely associated with stock returns in the A-share market. However, the study found that the reconciliation of earnings and book values from CAS to IAS basis is partially value-relevant, mainly to stock prices in the B-share market, while the earnings reconciliation is generally not value-added to stock returns in either the A- or the B-share market. The study results suggest that accounting numbers based on domestic accounting standards, in contrast to IAS, are more value-relevant in the Chinese stock market at present.

WOW! Great book! Just what I needed!.......2005-02-21

I run staff development sessions and have been looking and looking for appropriate fun materials to use in a PowerPoint presentation. This book of excellent, very funny, professional cartoons is just what I was looking for. The first time I got permission to use one of the cartoons the audience loved it. How did the author come up with so many appropriate ideas, on such an esoteric topic, is something I'll never understand. I am happy he did.

A masterful work.......2003-09-10

Those who have read Clark's biography of Einstein, will find his study of Darwin and of his theory of wonderful interest. Clark was truly a master of the biographer's art. A thoroughly researched book that gives insight into Darwin as a kindly country gentleman who spent his life in earnest study of nature - indeed of the processes of survival. The book does not end at Darwin's death but continues on to examine the impact of his work and the development of knowledge about heredity well into the late twentieth century. The only regret the reader may have from this book is knowing that Clark is dead and we will have no more wonderful studies. He did not write many books, but instead gave remarkable attention to the figures he studied. Reading all of his biographies would be a worthwhile journey into the art of research and of writing that gives historical figures of gargantuan proportion a humanity that brings them to life. The Biography of Darwin also gives light to the ridiculousness of creationists who still struggle against the inevitable truth of his clarity of thought, as well as to how scientists could impale themselves against the guarded idols of the fixed paradigms of their own egoes. Would that some playwright would bring Darwin to life in a work of intellectual stature. There are surely enough characters of his time to make it most interesting.

A Comedy of Foresight and Truth.......2001-04-17

Giraudoux writes this play after World War I. He brings Greek mythology into the text and foresights World War II through his comparison of Troy loosing Helene and starting another war to Germany having everything taken away after WWI like the Rhinevalley and any hope of glory. There is a lot of comedy, but more importantly a lot of truth into the future. It is an amazing story and a quick read.

French and Greek lit--combined in passions of love and war.......2001-02-27

This is a humorous and also serious ficticious story of the events surrounding the Trojan War. We get up-close and personal with the characters (Helen, Paris, Hector, Ulysses, Priam) and also other people that would have had influences, but are totally made-up ("le Geometre," "Demokos," "Iris," etc.). Though this book does not have a lot of war action, its fast-pace politics are entertaining enough. The passions these characters have are immeasurable. Don't read this book if you want to learn about Greek mythology or a factual re-enactment of Troy. Do read this book if you enjoy fiction/fantasy and want to brush up on your french ;).

Fun series.......2007-08-31

I love little town series such as Jan Karon's Mitford or Philip Gulley's Harmony, so when I read about the Dearest Dorothy series, I decided to give them a try. I was not disappointed. The main character really is a dear! She's so spunky and fun loving. There's not a lot of drama or poignancy, just a nice light read.

A Great Find.......2007-06-15

I happened upon this book while looking for a good read. I admit when I saw "Partonville" I wasn't sure what I was in for! I loved it! Great characters, Dorothy is a spunky old women who reminded me of my own spunky grandmothers who both lived to be 98! and Josh is a breath of fresh air. The relationship they develop is wonderful. It's a light read and sure to put you in a good mood. I've shared it with my mother (an avid reader)and she mentioned the following books in the series, I've ordered them and am just finishing book two "Slow down You're Wearing Us Out!". It is just as entertaining as the first. Can't wait to start on book three "Dearest Dorothy, Help! I've Lost Myself!"

Not as expected........2007-01-15

The author of this was toted to be an upcoming and compared too... what. It is well written, but the plot, action and premises of this is yet to "get to me". As to "..... Are we there yet?" I still have yet to figure out what it has to do with the story of the book.

Wonderful Series.......2006-08-24

I came upon this book by accident and I am glad that I did. The characters are wonderfully written and you will find yourself laughing one minute and all of a sudden you will have tears in your eyes. Dorothy is the type of woman that you hope you grow up to be like. Even though she is in her late 80's, she is young at heart and people find her a joy to be around. Not only is the character of Dorothy well written, but the other people in the town are interesting too. After reading this book, I went and bought all the others that are out and look forward to upcoming books. If you have read and enjoyed the "Mitford" books, I know you will enjoy this also.
