Customer Reviews:
An outstanding approach on managing intangible assets.......2001-05-07
As a full time practitioner and researcher on Intellectual Capital Management since the beginning of the 90's, I am always looking for new useful concepts, methodologies and tools on managing intangible assets. This time in Weightless Wealth of Andriessen and Tissen I have found something unique that breaks the conventional thinking: a new practical method that leads to better strategic decisions focusing on core competencies, as the foundations of present and above all future value creation and as the unique bundle of intangible assets.
A took kit the "Value Explorer" guides the reader through the practical applications of the method. I would like to say, that my experience on the model ICBS (Intellectual Capital Benchmarking System), that follows a similar way, guarantees the effectiveness of this new alternative approach. Weightless Wealth is a well-written book, easy to read, enjoyable and engaging from start to finish.
Most valuable IC exploration and assessment.......2001-04-23
"Weightless Wealth is a very important contribution to the development of work on Intellectual Capital. It reviews the historical development of IC as well as addresses how to leverage the potential of your intangibles, competences and talents. It has a very interesting appendix called the Value Explorer Toolkit. It shows how to identify core competences and then calculate the value contribution of these competences. This will give a model and fundamental platform for identifying wealth creating dimensions and sustainable shareholder value cultivation."
Leif Edvinsson, the world's first corporate director of IC at Skandia, now associate professor of IC at the University of Lund
A well-written and engaging book..........2001-04-17
Finding a workable and practical means of linking the core competence approach to business management with financial measures has been the goal of many researchers. In Weightless Wealth, Andriessen and Tissen suggest an approach and illustrate it with the easily-followed example of a toy manufacturer which runs through the book. Andriessen and Tissen provide practical advice on how to define and test company competencies and link them to the basic intangible assets that underlies them. Their
toolkit, the Value Explorer, is described in the last part of the book and guides the reader through their suggested process. Their linkage of competencies to financial results and the future earning power of the company is new and provides an alternative perspective for managers faced with critical strategic decisions. This is of special importance in a world in which the value of businesses by traditional means has become very difficult. Weightless Wealth is a well-written book, easy to read and engaging from start to finish.
Weightless Wealth is a Heavy Hitter!.......2001-02-24
As a researcher in the field of intellectual capital, I am keen on examining various conceptualizations of managing the intangible knowledge assets of firms. This book provides a refreshing perspective on this matter. It is both an easy read and comprehensive enough to provide the reader with a firm understanding of the current management theories, concepts and measurement approaches in the field. I encourage anyone interested in the management of organizational knowledge (both practitioner and academic) to pick up a copy and enjoy.

Book Description
It is vital for organisations to use company analysis to gain understanding of their limiting and enabling factors and strategic capabilities. Profits can then be maximised by selecting the most effective strategies, and through successful implementation of mergers, acquisitions and divestment opportunities.
In this book Jenster and Hussey move away from the opinion based SWOT analysis commonly used, to provide a more objective step-by-step approach to objectively analysing an organisation. This important task is clearly explained, with information helpfully displayed in diagrams, and checklists of critical questions provided. In addition to the key, functional areas of management, corporate-wide approaches such as core competencies, critical success factors, industry analysis and the value chain are also examined.
The book is illuminated with examples from the authors' own experiences, resulting in a practical and effective approach which will provide a foundation for corporate strategy and add a strategic dimension to a due diligence study - and so prove invaluable to MBA students and lecturers in strategic management.
Every manager will be asked to participate in assessing strengths and weaknesses at some time in their career, and this book enables a considerable improvement to be made to many commonly used methods - and for those responsible for the development of strategies, it offers even more.
Customer Reviews:
Overall, this book is illuminating...useful even in a due diligence study!.......2007-09-23
Most businessmen & professionals are familiar with the concept of internal or position audit, better known as SWOT or SPOT Analysis in management/marketing books.
To recap, the purpose of an internal audit is to appraise the strengths, weaknesses, capabilities, resources & vulnerabilities in an organisation.
Personally as well as professionally, I prefer SPOT Analysis as the "Problems" in SPOT are psychologically easier to solve than the "Weaknesses" in SWOT. The latter is seemingly more inherent in the system.
In this wonderful book, the author puts internal audit into the spotlight with a comprehensive book-length treatment.
Probably due to space, there is only a relatively broad brush on industry analysis.
What I like about the book is the broader context in which the author has put internal audit - synconvergently (thanks to Michael Gelb) with creative strategic thinking, strategic decision making & implementation.
The author has dedicated one full chapter each to illustrate the key results areas to be considered in an internal audit, with a checklist of critical questions:
- Finance;
- Marketing;
- Production;
- Technology & Production;
- Human Resource Management;
- Management Effectiveness;
- Culture & Structure;
- Information Systems;
The writing is crisp & clear. Examples are well illustrated. The track record of both authors, particularly David Hussey, certainly helps in making the book useful in even a due diligence study of acquisitions, mergers, strategic alliances & divestments.
Overall, this book is illuminating.
I would recommend this book to be read in conjunction with any of the following books, to make your appraisal of core competencies, core capabilities, critical success factors & value chains a more complete exercise:
1) 'Scanning the Business Environment', by Francis Aquilar (my personal favourite!);
2) 'Strategic Issues Management: A Comprehensive Guide to Environmental Scanning', by John Stoffels;
3) 'Information Management for the Intelligent Organisation: The Art of Scanning the Environment', by Chun Wei Joo;
HOW TO DISCOVER ORGANIZATIONAL STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES.......2001-06-12
This book shows how to conduct an appraisal of an organization's strengths and weakness for purposes of strategic planning that goes beyond the "ask the managers" approach. It tackles the subject in an in-depth, thorough and holistic way, providing a basic framework, evaluative approaches and guidelines, and numerous questionnaires. The major subject areas covered are: finance; marketing; production; technology and innovation; human resource management, management effectiveness, culture and structure; and information systems. The authors also take a process orientation that cuts across departments or functions, avoiding the trap of thinking that optimizing performance in each part will lead to an optimal performance of the whole. The book also explores benchmarking, comments on reengineering, and examines the value chain approach. Another approach that is explored is core competencies and their related critical success factors and core capabilities, all cutting across the whole organization. Additionally, a chapter is devoted to conducting an industry analysis. The book concludes with insights about involving managers and drawing all findings together. This book is very rare, if not wholly unique work. Well written and organized, its potential value is enormous. Very highly recommended.

A biting, witty, and satirical look at medicine in the U.S.
Not true.......1999-06-14
It's disappointing to take home a book which is subtitled "Tales of a Country Doctor," and then read in the fine print of the prologue, "There will be some who ... will complain about the _fact_ of a particular matter [being] ... in need of correction.... You are in the minority. The sooner you learn ... that the greatness of Truth is that it transcends the lowly fact, the better off you will be."
In other words, not only is this another Palmer wannabe, but it's pure fiction masquerading as down-home fact.

Book Description
I was born with a fever, but it seemed to subside for sixteen years. . . . And then as I turned sixteen and stopped smiling, the fever returned though my skin stayed pale and sure, showing no sign of the heat inside me.
At Mt. Douglas (a.k.a. Mt. Drug) High, all the girls have feathered hair, and the sweet scent of Love's Baby Soft can't hide the musk of raw teenage anger, apathy, and desire. Sara Shaw is a girl full of fever and longing, a girl looking for something risky, something real. Her only possible salvation comes in the willowy form of the mysterious Justine, the outlaw girl in the torn skirt. The search for Justine will lead Sara on a daring odyssey into an underworld of hookers and johns, junkies and thieves, runaway girls and skater boys, and, ultimately, into a violent tragedy.
One of the most provocative and original coming-of-age novels to appear in a long time, The Torn Skirt is a lyrical story that soars with an honest understanding of the teenage condition.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable.......2007-05-15
This isn't the type of book that leaves you with a happy feeling at the end of it. Despite that, I still enjoyed this book. Sara's journey throught this book is definitely trying and kept my interest. I definitely reccomend it.
Eh.......2007-03-17
This book kind of sucked. I was sure I was going to like it but it failed to live up to some of the comments that others have said about it. I never really got into the story and the characters weren't at all people you would want to meet let alone read about. Save your money and buy a good book.
reminiscent of..........2006-07-26
An interesting book along the lines of The Catcher in the Rye. A girl in the lead. We follow her around and in the end, no harm falls upon her. A rarity.
Big waste of time........2006-06-06
Big Waste of Time pretty much sums up "The Torn Skirt". With such a nifty title and comparisons to Blake Nelson's "Girl" I thought I was in for a real treat reading this book. It has nothing to do with a "coming of age" story since it takes place of the course of about, a week. Sarah goes from sort burn out loser to complete wacko street crack-whore in the space of three days. She seems to be having a midlife crisis brought about by the guilt of not doing anythng to comfort a friend who was sexually assaulted and the fear of graduating from high school and an official Loser.
While yes, it's touching that she cares about her father, misses her kooky mother and feels...something for these runaway prostitute street children, the book is too poorly written to ever get a feel for the character's motivations, thoughts or feelings. It doesn't really feel like it is written by a teenage girl, troubled or otherwise.
I was glad when it ended and while I appreciated that the author didn't give us a neat and tidy ending, I could not have cared less what happened to Sarah, I was just relieved the book had ended. That's rare for me. Maybe you just have to be high to get this book.
it's ok.......2006-05-30
The Torn Skirt is an ok book. I don't think it deserves 4 stars, but it's better then 2 stars. It really is just ok. The story line is good, but a little hard to follow. The book gets slightly confusing at times, and makes you stop and flip a couple pages back to remember what happened. There are several perverted scenes in the book. If you don't like explicit descriptions this book isn't for you.
Don't waste your money on this book. It's not worth it. If you really want to read it then check it out from the library.
Book Description
The potential failure of a large bank presents vexing questions for policymakers. It poses significant risks to other financial institutions, to the financial system as a whole, and possibly to the economic and social order. Because of such fears, policymakers in many countriesdeveloped and less developed, democratic and autocraticrespond by protecting bank creditors from all or some of the losses they otherwise would face. Failing banks are labeled "too big to fail" (or TBTF). This important new book examines the issues surrounding TBTF, explaining why it is a problem and discussing ways of dealing with it more effectively.
Gary H. Stern and Ron J. Feldman, officers with the Federal Reserve, warn that not enough has been done to reduce creditors' expectations of TBTF protection. Many of the existing pledges and policies meant to convince creditors that they will bear market losses when large banks fail are not credible, resulting in significant net costs to the economy. The authors recommend that policymakers enact a series of reforms to reduce expectations of bailouts when large banks fail.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Analysis.......2006-05-14
As a 35 year banker (and loan officer) I have seen and survived the dark days of 1985-1992 when the banking industry was on the edge.
Penn Square as the harbringer of disaster and the impact on the industry was a rude awakening.
Thus, the spectre of TBTF; particularly as more banks continue to grow and we now have trillion dollar financial institutions.
This book covers TBTF with outstanding analysis. In fact, it should be required reading for government, regulators, and bankers (certainly senior management and boards),
An awesome book.
