* A "first book" on how to access the vast and expanding array of medical information now available and how to critically evaluate it
Customer Reviews:
Helpful Gem.......2002-12-10
This is a gem of a book . It will be most helpful to those people who want to be an active participant in the healthcare decisions being made for them or for someone who they are close to and who needs an advocate. It does this by explaining, in layman's terms, how medical professionals arrive at conclusions about diagnoses and treatment. The book can be unsettling because it shows how much uncertainty is associated with medicine. But it will help anyone begin to understand the medical treatment they or a loved one might be undergoing. It does this not by being a medical textbook about diseases, though it contains many medical examples; instead it is a guide that helps the reader to ask questions and search for further information about what doctors say.
I was recently diagnosed with a medical problem. The book has helped me to think more actively about my treatment and to help me ask my doctor questions that I might not have thought about. Doctors are of ten not the all-knowing professionals you want them to be. In fact they should read this book as well.
The best way I can describe the contents of the book is to quote from the Preface, "This book sets the stage for understanding medical information in Chapters 1 and 2 .... Chapter 3 provides an overview of the types of medical research [and] the role of statistics in evaluating studies .... Chapters 4, 5, and 6 comprise a central core of knowledge about the high - as well as lower-tech processes by which we make diagnoses of individual patients, assess the health of populations, make decisions about treatments under conditions of uncertainty, and attempt to provide the best prognostic judgments possible given the great complexity and diversity among patients. The final sections of the book, Chapters 7 and 8, provide conceptual as well as practical guidelines for assessing the quality of medical information available on the Internet, explain the ways in which Internet resources might best be used to capture good information, and confront the current realities of what can and cannot be expected from "artificial intelligence."
Don't be put off by the statistical tables and terminology. They are explained remarkably well. You will learn how necessary statistics are to medicine without having to be a math whiz. I was amazed how the book made it easy to understand complex ideas in science, medicine and statistics. Reading this book is also a small intellectual adventure about how the science of medicine has evolved. The chapter on the Internet helps to grapple with the mass of information that can swamp you.
Each chapter is followed by a summary with suggested references. What I particularly liked was the short blurbs accompanying the references, making it easier to decide what might be worth further investigation.

Book Description
The field of Adaptive Optics (AO) for astronomy has matured in recent years, and diffraction-limited image resolution in the near-infrared is now routinely achieved by ground-based 8 to 10m class telescopes. This book presents the proceedings of the ESO Workshop on Science with Adaptive Optics held in the fall of 2003. The book provides an overview on AO instrumentation, data acquisition and reduction strategies, and covers observations of the sun, solar system objects, circumstellar disks, substellar companions, HII regions, starburst environments, late-type stars, the galactic center, active galaxies, and quasars. The contributions present a vivid picture of the multitude of science topics being addressed by AO in observational astronomy.

A general guide for the interpretation of analytical data.......1999-04-18
This book is a remarkable exposition of the importance of the information-theoretical concepts in the understanding of chemical analysis, as well as a guide for practical usage of these powerfull mathematical and conceptual tools. The main merit of the book is the clear and rigorous analysis of many laboratory metodologies and systems, which makes evident the adequacy of information-theoretical concepts in description and analysis. It covers a great amount of the analytical chemistry scope, with subjects like: -IDENTIFICATION OF COMPONENTS -QUALITATIVE -QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS, both single and multiple -OPTIMIZATION of strategies -QUALITY ASSURANCE -STRUCTURE ANALYSIS -CHEMOMETRICS

From the incredible wizardry of Merlin to the undeniable passion of Sir Launcelot, these tales of Arthur and his knights offer epic adventures with the supernatural-as well as timeless battles with our own humanity.
Download Description
The legends of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table have inspired some of the greatest works of literature--from Cervantes's Don Quixote to Tennyson's Idylls of the King. Although many versions exist, Malory's stands as the classic rendition. Malory wrote the book while in Newgate Prison during the last three years of his life; it was published some fourteen years later, in 1485, by William Caxton. The tales, steeped in the magic of Merlin, the powerful cords of the chivalric code, and the age-old dramas of love and death, resound across the centuries.

Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
I have to say it took me quite a few sausage roll lunch hours to get through this one as a kid. There is no doubt it is very interesting and important for the whole Arthur thing.
Those interested should definitely check it out from that point of view, even if only having a browse, it is well worth the time to see the origins of a lot of this.
A classic.......2007-08-24
What a delight. I read this book as a child [over 50 years ago] and it was a wonderful trip back in time for me to read it again. I had forgotten how well produced and written it was. This Malory version captures the spirit of the era.
Well worth purchasing.
You need it if you are going to read Vol II.......2007-07-08
I purchased this book because my husband owns vol II and wanted to read vol I first. If you love epics, masonry, legends, and the like this is the book for you.
Keith Baines's Modern Version.......2007-06-29
Aamazon has lumped together reviews of most available versions and editions of Malory's classic, and it isn't always possible to tell just which one a reviewer is talking about. This review applies solely to the Signet Classic modern-English version by Keith Baines.
Sir Thomas Malory's "Le Morte D'Arthur" was published in 1485. That was at the very end of the Middle English period. What that means is that the ERnglish that Malory spoke was in many ways closer to Chaucer's than to our own. You can read the original, but you'll need an extensive glossary and a good deal of practice.
Nearly fifty years ago Keith Baines took the somewhat daring step of presenting Malory's proto-novel in Modern English. Baines called his work a "rendition" rather than a "translation" because he has cut out a fair amount of repetition and done a good deal of paraphrasing as well. Nevertheless, the resulting edition faithfully sets out all of the substance and most of the detail of the original in straightforward Modern English. There are no archaic "thees" and "thous," for example, yet, fortunately, Baines makes no attempt to "modernize" the level of diction. His prose therefore sounds appropriately sober without being stilted.
I read the Baines version in high school when there was no way I could have handled Malory's original Middle English. I loved it. Scholars are appropriately annoyed that Baines may have condensed a little too much, but if you're curious enough to delve deeper there's always Janet Cowan's Penguin Classic edition, which just modernizes the spelling, and the Norton edition which meticulously reprints the original and includes a number of academic essays to boot.
By the way, Malory's 1485 narrative of the Arthurian legend is quite a bit different in almost every way from T.H. White's deservedly popular and very humorous "Once and Future King." For one thing, Malory wasn't kidding around. His enduring classic of world literature is serious though filled with wonders. If you're mainly interested in the story, the Baines "rendition" is the best version of "Le Morte D'Arthur" available. (But take the fascinating introduction by poet Robert Graves, author of "Goodbye to All That" and "The White Goddess," with several grains of salt.)
Just the text, ma'am.......2007-01-08
This Modern Library edition runs true to form, lacking much in the way of supplemental material or notes but providing a good basic presentation of the text on quality paper in a good binding. An edition to keep on the shelf for occasional reading rather than a student's book. If there's a really good scholarly edition of the "Morte" out there I don't know about it - anyone?

Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
A decent short book, done in the PI type of style you would expect, if you add in a mythological city, ghosts, timewarps, monsters, and a very bad house.
The main character is a Nightside resident living in the ordinary world to be left alone.
A woman comes to him with a case and pulls him back in, which, for him, is very dangerous. Lucky thing is he has more than one superpower.
Interesting.......2007-06-09
More along the lines of a short story than a full novel, this is an entertaining quick read. A good premise and interesting charactors. Can't wait to hear more from the Nightside.
A good start for an even better series.......2007-01-09
Far away from the busy, congested streets, and the bright blue skies of London, lies the Nightside, a cesspool of dark pleasure and terrors that can only be told in languages long forgotten. John Taylor was born there, and his special gift or "private eye" helps him find things in the Nightside with accuracy. He hadn't had a case in weeks, so when the millionaire named Joanna Barrett walked in with the case of her missing daughter, he couldn't refuse. Hopefully he knows better now. This case takes him on a journey into the darkest parts of the Nightside, from its nightclubs infested with the most demonic types of people, to its spontaneous events that thrust you into Timeslips. The end of his journey brings a twist that contradicts everything that was just summarized. Read this book at your own risk. It offers a grotesque experience that is enjoyable only to a select few readers.
Like I just said, this book is disgusting at times. You don't believe me? Let me offer you an example. Take this selection found early on in the story. Skip it if you find it offensive, for I'm sure you will: "There is a room where silence is caged, and a deceased nun will show you her stigmata, for the right price she didn't rise again, but she will still let you finger her blood- caked holes." It only gets worse, and these sentences are quite common. I personally found no offense, but that may just be me.
On a positive note, Simon R. Green has made a point to come up with some unique characters for his story. Don't expect any fantasy stereotypes in this story. There are people like Razor Eddie, a psycho-killer with body odor that is rivaled only by the killing potential of his pearl-handled razor. There is also Suzie Shooter. She is also a psycho-killer. John Taylor has very violent, troubled acquaintances. Suzie is always strapped from head to toe with ammunition, guns and explosives. Both are friends of John, but he makes an effort to make sure that no one ever gets close to him.
At the end, it leaves a lot of unanswered questions and things not fully described. This is bad, right? Not so much. You see, this is only the start of a series. On its own, it would only warrant the award of three stars, but as the start of a series, I would give it four or five. Who is John's mother, and why did she disappear? What will Cathy, Joanna's daughter do now that she is okay? These things rattle in my head as I prepare myself for Simon R. Green's next masterpiece.
Suggestive themes, great characters, and questions left unanswered. What more could you want. This is a great start for a series that breaks all of the fantasy genre rules. This is a fantasy book that deserves a movie.
J. Bowman
Surprisingly Entertaining.......2006-11-14
In this novel, Mr. Green creates a world parallel to the beloved city London, but entirely different in itself. "The Nightside" is a darker version of London where pretty much anything goes, and it is always 3 AM. The weather is created by the feeling of the city itself, and a person can slip into the past or future simply by walking in the wrong place. Everything flows in this novel from the fast paced plot to the truly original characters. Finally I encountered a twist that I actually did not see coming. I would defiantly recommend this book to any fellow fantasy heads. The only thing I noticed that irked me was frequent grammatical errors, but they do not disrupt the reading. I will defiantly continue with this series.
this is really good!.......2006-10-15
This book is a really good starter to a new series. I have just discovered this author. I had to have the rest.
John taylor is somewhat like the old detectives and sometimes the cliches get in the way, but it is real good.
A Wild trip in to the nightside.
LOVE his charactors names

Fresh and Fun.......2006-10-10
Everybody Comes to the Nightside, by Simon R. Green is actually a Science Fiction Book Club 3-in-1 book including originally published: Something From the Nightside, Agents of Light and Darkness, and Nightingale's Lament.
The Nightside books center on John Taylor, a private investigator who has special abilities that help him find things in a dark, magical place called the Nightside. My favorite passage that pretty much sums it up is from the forward in Nightingale's Lament:
"My name is John Taylor. I've made that a name to be respected and feared, but it's also made me a target my whole life.
I operate as a private eye, in a world where gods and monsters are real. The Nightside: the sick, secret magical heart of London. A place where dreams come true, whether you want them to or not. It's not easy to find a way in, and it can be even harder to find a way out.
I can find anything, solve any mystery. Except the answers to the dark and deadly secrets of my own past.
My name is John Taylor. And if you've come looking for me, either you're in trouble, or you're bound to be."
In the first book, Something From the Nightside, a woman comes to John to ask him to find her daughter. They must travel to the dark and magical world of the Nightside, from where John has fled. The story incorporates dark humor, suspense, and horror, all wrapped up in an eerie mystery. This is my favorite in the series so far, simply because the Nightside is such a mystery and the slow reveal is great because it's such a new and different place.
In the second book, Agents of Light and Darkness, the Nightside is already exposed to us, so Green can concentrate more on the plot, meanwhile still introducing new, creepy places within the city. A mysterious monk comes to John to ask him to find the Unholy Grail. Angels, demons, and everyone else dangerous seems to be searching for it as well. John teams up with Shotgun Suzie, a deadly assassin who once tried to kill him, for this disturbing tale.
In Nightingale's Lament, the third book, Taylor is hired to find a famous singer in the Nightside whose audience seems to be committing suicide after her shows. Many more creepy (and yet fun) characters are introduced in this story that either aid or try to kill Taylor along the way.
I love how these are written in a sort of classic pulp fiction detective novel, yet very fresh and fun.
