Book Description
The quest for the farthest objects in the Universe remains one of the most challenging areas of modern astronomical research. Peering deeper and deeper into space reveals the most distant and powerful objects known and so unveils the embryonic epochs of the Universe not long after its birth in the Big Bang. Four world experts--chosen for their ability to communicate research astronomy at a popular level--each contributes a chapter to this lucid survey. They address the fundamental issues of scale in the Universe; the ghostly etchings seen on the cosmic background radiation; quasars and their evolution; and galaxy birth. This fascinating and accessible account offers an exceptional chance for the general audience to share in the excitement of today's forefront research of the early Universe.

A culinary student's point of view.......2007-08-02
1) Overview of Topics Addressed
For graduates of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) who are about to enter the professional world, this book is an easy way to brush up on basic mathematic skills before entering the job market. This 383 page book covers math topics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, solving percent problems, statistics, business graphics, and measurement systems English and Metric. It helps the student compute business records and transactions such as invoices, purchase orders, stock records, and time cards. Students can also learn to calculate the wages of employees with true-to-life word problem scenarios. For example, "Jack Green is paid $7.25 an hour for a 40-hour week plus time and a half for overtime. Last week he worked 45 hours. How much was his gross pay? Green worked 40 hours of regular time plus 5 hours of overtime". By practicing word problems that are realistic to the profession, this book helps people with basic skills in the restaurant industry.
2) How the Topic Relates to the Hospitality/Restaurant Industry
The hospitality/restaurant industry, according to the CIA Course Catalog 2004-2005, is an "industry that generates an estimated $440.1 billion in annual sales in the US." This book provides chefs a review of fundamental math skills which are imperative for running successful restaurant businesses. It teaches checking and accuracy methods, as well as shortcuts in business computations. "Anyone working in the business world must have a thorough knowledge of multiplication. When you are given the number of items purchased and the price of each, you find the total cost of the purchase by multiplication. Discounts are found by multiplication, as are sales taxes". It provides a practical review of applications to the business world. "Division is widely used by both businesses and consumers. In installment buying, the monthly payments are calculated by using division. When merchandise is purchased in quantity, the unit price is found by division". By using step-by-step explanations and exercises based on forms used in business and word problems drawn from actual business situations to reinforce skills, this book presents case problems from retailing, purchasing, management, and finance which are directly transferable to the hospitality industry.
3) How the Information is Useful to Me as an Executive Chef
This information will be useful to an aspiring executive chef like me because I will be responsible for all aspects of managing the kitchen and kitchen personnel. As an executive chef, I will have to ensure the proper handling, storage, quality preparation, and presentation of all menu items. I will also have to have a thorough knowledge of coordinating the purchase of all labor costs and develop profitable menus. "Many business transactions involve fractions, or parts of units. Many items are sold in pounds or fractions of a pound, in dozens or parts of a dozen. Hourly wages are computed with fractional parts of hours, and overtime pay is usually figured an 1 1/2 times the regular rate". I have to understand the fundamentals of mathematics in order to maintain and control food and labor costs. It is a useful book for the CIA student or graduate because it covers all areas of business mathematics. It starts with decimals and whole numbers. Like building blocks in the CIA curriculum, the book brings students along, bit by bit, through fractions, percents, statistics, and equations, to specifics of business-related mathematics applications such as payroll, discounts, markup/markdown, interest, credit, depreciation, inventory, insurance, and taxes. Procedures, rules, and formulas are broken down. I recommend this book to anyone in the restaurant/hospitality industry professional because it is easy to follow.
Business Mathematics Is There A Finer Book.......2001-03-23
Hi, I would like to tell you how much I enjoyed the Business Math book. The book was so fun and easy to catch on to that before I knew it I was done. This book is thick so you would think it would take you months to do but it dosent. The book is designed as a teacher first they explain the work and give you examples then you do the work and refer to the examples as you would a teacher so thank you for writing this book Colman Goozner.

Book Description
Manalive pits a group of disillusioned young people against Mr. Innocent Smith, a bubbly, high-spirited gentleman who literally falls into their midst. Accused of murder and denounced for repeatedly marrying his wife and attempting to live in various houses, Smith prompts his newfound acquaintances to recognize an important idea: that life is worth living.
Download Description
All next day at Beacon House there was a crazy sense that it was everybody's birthday. It is the fashion to talk of institutions as cold and cramping things. The truth is that when people are in exceptionally high spirits, really wild with freedom and invention, they always must, and they always do, create institutions.
Customer Reviews:
Middling Chesterton.......2007-08-17
This is not Chesterton's best book. However, forgetting for a moment that it is Chesterton (a word which here means 'one of the greatest author ever to live'), this is a wonderful book.
Full of Chestertonian whimsy, humor and outlandish ideas, it is a charm from beginning to end.
You will probably appreciate this book more if you are a die-hard Chesterton fan, but you need not be to enjoy it.
If, however, this is the first Chesterton you have read, please do not stop at this one, but go on to read his others. This is an author you cannot miss.
Sanity has broken out, and is spreading.......2007-04-13
Sometimes we need a little madness just to know we're alive. That's the basic message of "Manalive," a delightfully strange mystery (of sorts), in which G.K. Chesterton demonstrates just why life is worth living -- and that a bit of craziness can be extremely beneficial.
A wind blows a new tenant into the dreary Beacon House -- Innocent Smith, an exuberant, eccentric and sweet-natured man who seems to be nuts. But Smith has a positive effect on the house -- he creates his own court, brings a few couples together, and falls in love with a paid companion next door. All seems to be well with the world.
Then the unexpected happens: Smith shoots at one of the tenants, and two doctors arrive to arrest him, claiming that he's a bigamist, an attempted murderer, and a thief. But cynical writer Moon insists that the case be tried there -- and they explore Smith's past history, revealing startling truths about what he does. Is he the wickedest man in Britain, or is he "blameless as a buttercup?"
You gotta love "Holy Fool" books, although Chesterton's take on it is sunnier than Dostoyevsky's or Cervantes'. Instead, "Manalive" focuses on a childlike, optimistic man who is far cleverer than anyone suspects, because he knows the value of living life, and how to keep it from ever getting dull.
The first half of the book is a bit predictable, but Chesterton throws an unprecedented twist into the plotline by having the "allegorical practical joker" turn out to be a fugitive. Then, it's half legal battle, half philosophical argument, in which which Chesterton points out the beauty of living life, and how nothing makes us appreciate it more than the nearness of death.
"With our weak spirits we should grow old in eternity if we were not kept young by death. Providence has to cut immortality into lengths for us," Smith explains.
But since this is by Chesterton, it's full of hilarious dialogue ("In the matter of his being a flamingo, my client reserves his defence"), and lushly detailed writing, where something as small as a man standing in a moonlit garden is given an ethereal eerieness.
And Innocent Smith is a bit of an enigma -- charismatic, innocent, weird, eccentric and lovable. Yet how can he have committed these crimes, and still live up to his name? He's surrounded by a bunch of people who have fallen into dullness or cynicism -- Irish reporters, timid doctors, heiresses -- but who show signs of the "sanity" as they spend time around him.
"Manalive" is a twisty, hilarious tale where nothing is as it seems -- but Chesterton also throws in some philosophical points about how great it is to live your life, and appreciate it. Definitely a good read.
funny and challenging.......2007-01-10
One of my favorite books--I have read it 3 times. The imagery is engaging and funny. The book encourages one to live life to the fullest.
Contrived story; brilliant ideas.......2006-05-05
While the very story of the book is rather contrived and artificial, the ideas conveyed in it make this a worthwhile read. Basically Chesterton uses an allegory to show that contemporary society cannot begin to comprehend a truly Christian man. Remarkably Chesteron set this book in an ostensibly Christian society. However his understanding of a Christian meant someone like the protagonist Innocent Smith; a man who was dead to the world in that he paid no heed to the laws and customs of man but held dear the eternal principles and laws of God.
Chesterton also slips in some harsh criticism of science, psychology in particular, throughout the course of the book. Although Gould and Pym constantly change their scientific explanations of Smith's behaviour, they pompously expect everyone to except their decisions because it is science. While science does explain things of the material world, Chesterton makes it clear that the soul of man is above such crude analysis becuase it is made in the image of God.
So as a man fears things he does not understand so do entire societies fear men they do not understand.
Whimsical.......2006-03-01
Manalive is all the things stated by the other reviews given here, except the inference of being a great book. It has some wonderful prose. It has interesting ideas. It has a truly unique main character, Innocent Smith.
At the same time, there are two clear issues with Manalive. First, it is rife with extreme plot contrivances. Allegory or not, these are very distracting. A trial is enacted in a single afternoon, and letters used as evidence simply appear from all around the world. Innocent's wife takes vacations of a week or two in different locations about Britain, but people know and care about her as if she'd been there for a year or more. Etc. Second, the characterizations, other than Innocent, are shallow and stereotypical. There is the sleepy elder matron, the sardonic playboy, the intelligent but uptight D'ebutante, the stodgy closed-minded doctor, and so on.
A third problem with Manalive is that the central theme does not hold up, other than perhaps whimsically. Chesterton uses Innocent Smith to break conventions, to think beyond the norm, to witness the sunrise, to portray the essence of being alive. A crucial component of being alive is to never harm anyone: Smith shoots but never hits, he thieves but only from himself, he seduces and runs off with many women but (it turns out) they are all his wife. He and his wife play a recurring game of seduction and elopement, and it is here that Chesterton's core idea fails. Innocent and his wife never let anyone know what has happened to her. She simply runs off with him, and they've done so much of this--a young woman disappearing with this unusual man, to never be heard from again--that Innocent is feared to be a serial murderer or polygamist. The key is that the people left behind had grown to care for his wife. Perhaps they care in a stodgy, uptight, and not-alive manner, but in a very real sense, Innocent and his wife harm these people by never letting them know what happened to her.
Manalive has many wonderful attributes, but in a seriously flawed package.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent collection of Chesterton.......2006-03-10
I must say that I immensely enjoyed these three books by Chesterton. Manalive was my favorite of the three, followed by The Ball and the Cross, then The Flying Inn. I have individually reviewed each of the three, so I won't go into them here (just look up the books individually if you want to read about them). A previous reviewer said that The Flying Inn was the only book in this collection worth reading. I strongly disagree. Manalive and The Ball and the Cross became two of my favorite books after reading them. Manalive is definitely one of the best five books that I have ever read.
As to this specific edition, I was very pleased with the in-text notes. They really explain a lot of issues, and give information about many of the (somewhat) obscure historical figures that Chesterton referrences a lot (obscure in our time, not his). I do have one complaint about this edition, though: the introductions. I do not like to have the ending spoiled for me, and I knew that introductions to Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday had spoilers in the editor's introduction, so I decided to put off reading the introduction to this collected work until I had read the works. I am glad I did, because there are spoilers for both The Ball And The Cross and Manalive in the introductions, so DO NOT READ THE INRODUCTIONS unless you want to be deprived of the surprise which Chesterton indended for readers reaching the end of his books. I am very disappointed that Chesterton's editors repeatedly feel the need to give away the endings before the book even begins. Other than that, though, this was an excellent editions of some very hard to find Chesterton novels.
Overall Grade: A (Chesterton: A+, This edition: A-)
hold on a sec.......2005-05-10
You gotta be careful with Chesterton. When he's at his best, he can't be beat, but he was also responsible for some clunker novels. Even Chesterton's most avid readers have to admit this.
Well, such are the first two novels in this omnibus: forgettable.
The only one of them worth reading -- but it's REALLY worth reading -- is "The Flying Inn" about a future England which has fallen under the spell of a super-virile form of Islam.
However, if you are going to only read this novel (a course of action I heartily recommend), there's a much cheaper edition out there, the Dover Thrift edition: ISBN 048641910X, also available on Amazon. A much more prudent purchase.
An Excellent Group of Novels.......2004-09-01
These three novels are wonderful and the introduction and notes superb. Highly recommended for anyone who has been waiting a long time to find these rather rare books in a ready format.
Book Description
Here's a delightful collection of G. K. Chesterton quotes from 1900 to 1911, one for each day of the year--all selected by Chesterton himself. Every word of his 1912 classic is in this newly typeset edition. There are also newly created notes shedding light on events from his day that have been dimmed by the passage of time. In addition, there is a bibliography of sources and a detailed 17-page index to guide you to the quotes you need. Finally, there are several humorous sketches by Chesterton.
This book was previously published in the U.K. in 1911 as A Chesterton Calendar and in the U.S. in 1912 as The Wit and Wisdom of G. K. Chesterton. It includes Chapter 13, "The Movable Feasts," which was left out of the U.S. edition.
Customer Reviews:
The quotes were selected by Chesterton himself, so they represent what he thought was important........2007-01-17
This book serves two purposes. It is intended to be a daily devotional (like Oswald Chambers "My Utmost For His Highest"), focusing on G. K. Chesterton's wit and wisdom. The quotes were selected by Chesterton himself, so they represent what he thought was important, as opposed to reading another person's second-guessings.
One good point is that it has moveable feasts in an appendix, like Lewis's "The Business of Heaven." A down point is that the book lacks an entry for Leap Day. This is a common mistake made by all devotionals I own, except for Chambers's. If you are smart enough to include the Roman Catholic feast days (which you would expect from Chesterton), then why can't you remember Leap Day? It is beyond me!
The second purpose of the book is an unintentional one. This book serves as a de-facto quote book. I love quote books, since they serve as random sampler for a person's thought. C. S. Lewis said, "The only use of selections is to deter those readers who will never appreciate the original, and thus save them from wasting their time on it, and to send all the others on the original as quickly as possible." (The Quotable Lewis, #447)
This book accomplishes both: it is a wonderful daily devotional, and it whets the appetite for more.
G.K Chesterton.......2006-03-15
I bought this book for my grandmother and she loves it. It's hard for her to sit and read for a lond piriod of time. This book is nice because it has one little reading for every day. I would highly recomend this book.
