Book Description
The approach to marketing set forth in this book is more than a sales technique. It's a philosophy that allows the professional to turn the right prospects into great lifelong clients. This book is not about closing sales; it's about opening relationships.
Truly professional marketing is not about trapping prospects into buying. Successful marketing results in clients who are greatful for the help and guidance the professional provides. Clients can discern in expert marketing that the professional is genuinely concerned for the well-being of others.
As a professional, you already have most of the skills you need to become more valuable to your clients and also to become a better salesperson. The suggestions in this book will help you: Be an expert diagnostician of client problems; be good at asking questions; deal with people in a non-threatening way; be trustworthy; be organized and systematic; be good at learning the why; and, be able to get to know your clients well.
This book gives step-by-step processes to help you market and sell services to both current clients and new clients. While acquiring high-quality new clients is a challenging opportunity, retention of current clients is the most important part of any marketing program. The primary focus should be on rendering high-quality service that clients perceive as valuable. Client service and communication skills are covered in this book to help you improve your ability to retain these clients.
This book offers practical guidance in how to prepare for a meeting with prospects or clients, how to conduct an interview, how to offer a solution, and how to obtain a firm commitment.
The biggest marketing mistake most professionals make is that they look, act, and talk like their competitors. Your business is unique. Finding the value in your uniqueness is the basis for improving both your client relationships and your bottom line. If prospects see no difference between you and our competitors, then they must make decisions on the basis of price. Target Marketing provides an effective way for you to soar above the crowd of competitors, expand your services, charge higher prices, and (for accountants) avoid the workload compression problems of traditional compliance work by creating work to be done in the off-season.
Using the material in this book, you will be able to accomplish the following: Decide what kind of clients you want to build your practice around; learn what clients and prospects look for in their professional relationships; see your relationships from the point of the view of the clients; learn how to develop contracts that result in prospects; understand and discover the needs and wants of a prospect or client; and, learn to present to prospects the benefits of your services in a manner that increases your percentage of engagements obtained.

Excellent Marketing 101 Info and Tools.......2000-06-14
As a marketing consultant to CPA firms, I acquired the book as a reference mostly for the checklists, questionnaires and other documents found on the accompanying CD-ROM. I was pleasantly surprised at the direct and practical way Mr. Cottle covers so many topics critical to the success of a CPA firm from an operational standpoint. This is good stuff! I pick up this book at least once a month as a resource for presentation topics and background information to support my recommendations.
Marketing Analysis - Top to Bottom.......2000-05-31
This book is an easy read, walking you through a comprehensive marketing program. From the receptionist through the managing partner, Cottle details how each of the pieces should look and act. Though the book does not offer creative ways to seek specific client or to target an industry, it does provide insight into building networks, getting referrals, pricing, proposals and more. There is a lot of detail on sales techniques and step-by-step help on the sales process. The CD had several documents I will use in my practice.

Book Description
Performance measurement is a very timely topic in the public and nonprofit sectors of the United States and in many countries around the world. Executive and legislative initiatives have required public managers to identify performance measures, set performance targets, and report on their progress toward meeting performance goals. Funders have similarly asked nonprofits to show results for the support provided them. Program managers and budget officers have eagerly sought help in designing performance measurement strategies and systems. Program evaluators can enhance current performance measurement efforts by bringing stakeholders together to clarify program goals and determine how best to report results. This volume critically reviews current design and use of performance measurement in public and nonprofit programs. The authors describe the context surrounding design and implementation of performance measurement systems, discuss best practices in performance measurement, and provide examples of the use of performance measurement in all levels of government and the nonprofit sector. This is the 75th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Evaluation.

Slouching Toward Managerialism.......2004-08-15
It is ironic to me how nonprofits are using the harmful methods of the profit sector to assess their own achievements. Even now with more and more focus on patient centered medicine and student centered education and flex time in the work force it seems regressive that nonprofits choose quantitative measure that dehumanize the people they serve when alternatives are available. So though this book is practical in helping nonprofits appear more business like by providing them simple value neutral models for measuring their outcomes these methods are superficial and make me think of how the Borg on Star Trek might assess their ways of assimilating people.
The book also begs the question why are staff at nonprofits are untrained in developing methods for evaluating what they do. Here is the externalism problem magnified by a belief in measurements that are unnatural and are not holistic, other regarding. It would be better for executives to do what Heidegger calls gellasenheit with respect to how they effect people then das gestell. For the books models of measurement are Tayloresque, outdated and will not provide thorough feedback to staff to improve whjat they do in a way that is meaningful to people they serve.

Book Description
This unique atlas contains 236 charts of more than 300 of the brightest galaxies, each specifically prepared to facilitate the discovery of supernovae. The comparison of these charts with the field seen in a telescope enables any extra-galactic supernova to be spotted immediately. The proto-type set of these charts has already resulted in the discovery of several new supernovae. The charts include 345 galaxies printed on translucent paper for use on a lightbox, each one carrying an explanation of the constellation in which the galaxy lies, special characteristics of the galaxy, observing instructions, expected maximum brightness for the supernovae in each galaxy, and the reference for the sequence. A handbook, which accompanies the charts, describes how to make and record supernova discoveries, and reviews the present understanding of supernovae.

Practical Aspects of Hyaluronan Based Medical Products
ASIN: 0080443826 |
Book Description
It was probably the French chemist Portes, who first reported in 1880 that the mucin in the vitreous body, which he named hyalomucine, behaved differently from other mucoids in cornea and cartilage. Fifty four years later Karl Meyer isolated a new polysaccharide from the vitreous, which he named hyaluronic acid. Today its official name is hyaluronan, and modern-day research on this polysaccharide continues to grow.
Expertly written by leading scientists in the field, this book provides readers with a broad, yet detailed review of the chemistry of hyaluronan, and the role it plays in human biology and pathology. Twenty-seven chapters present a sequence leading from the chemistry and biochemistry of hyaluronan, followed by its role in various pathological conditions, to modified hylauronans as potential therapeutic agents and finally to the functional, structural and biological properties of hyaluronidases. Chemistry and Biology of Hyaluronan covers the many interesting facets of this fascinating molecule, and all chapters are intended to reach the wider research community.
* Comprehensive look at the chemistry and biology of hyaluronans
* sential to Chemists, Biochemists and Medical researchers
* broad yet detailed review of this rapidly growing research area

"Everyday" Math, Definitely Not "Basic" Math.......2006-10-09
About six months ago I purchased both "Everyday Math Demystified" and "Pre-Algebra Demystified" at the same time. I was just finishing up the tail end of an Associate Degree in business studies, and was thinking about switching things up a bit for a Bachelor's.
When I received both books, I made the decision to dive into the "Everyday Math" book first, thinking it would be the most likely choice for a good mathematic foundation - what a mistake that was!
As soon as I took a look at the first chapter, I knew I was in for some trouble. Right off the bat, the book used explanations that were WAY to advanced and confusing for someone just starting out. After struggling through the first few chapters, I quickly became discouraged and neglected my extracurricular algebraic studies, without even bothering to take a look at the second Demystified book I had purchased.
Months later, for reasons still unknown to me, I was compelled to pick up the "Pre-Algebra Demystified" book and give it a crack. To my extreme delight and surprise, this book was actually helpful! The book used simpler, more straight-forward explanations, and included a little bit of everything; from basic math and ratios, to geometry, basic equations, and graphing - simply stated, this book was everything that the "Everyday Math" book was thought to be but wasn't!
After going through my "Pre-Algebra Demystified" book, I was a satisfied enough customer to go ahead and purchase "Algebra Demystified" since these books seem to be progressive and build on one another. Perhaps after reading the second algebra book, my "Everyday Math" book might start making some sense!
In conclusion, if you are wanting to purchase a study guide for core math skills and build a solid foundation for more advanced mathematics such as trigonometry and linear algebra, "Pre-Algebra Demystified" in my opinion would make a far more superior choice. The lay-out and explanations are excellent, and the little quizzes and exams they throw in there really do help out as well.
Should be "Everyday Math Mystified".......2005-12-15
I haven't studied math in many years, and I wanted to freshen up my skills. I was never a math wiz, but I'm certainly competent at the basics. When you get beyond the basics, my brain starts hurting a bit though. Unfortunately, this book is so poorly written that even the basics made my brain hurt.
First off, contrary to what the title and cover suggest, this book contains almost no information on the basics. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are all covered in less then a page and a half. But don't get your hopes up... He doesn't actually tell you how to DO multiplication (for example). He tells you that multiplication is represented by a "x". The actual process of doing multiplication is apparently left as an excercise for the reader.
Ok, no problem. Like I said, I'm pretty good on the basics, I wanted something a bit more advanced anyway. Unfortunately, what information is here is presented so badly that you pretty much need to be a mathmetician to read it (in which case you probably don't need this book). Take the section on primes from p. 12: "Let p be a nonzero natural number. Suppose ab = p, where a and b are natural numbers. Further suppose that either of the following statements are true for all a and b: (a = 1) & (b = p) or (a = p) & (b = 1). Then p is considered a prime number. In other words, a natural number p is prime if and only if it's two natural number factors are 1 and itself". That's demystifying? Primes are a pretty simple topic, but you'd never guess it from that definition. I have since picked up a different book "Math the Easy Way" (by Anthony Prindle) which has this to say on the subject: "A prime number is a whole number whose only divisors are 1 and itself". Not only is this definiton MUCH more clear, it's less then a quarter the length. If the goal is to demystify a subject, you should use the least complicated language possible to effectively explain the subject, and this book fails miserably on that front.
This may be a great book if you are already well versed in moderately advanced math. If you're looking for a more basic math refresher, this will not do you any good at all. I havn't read much of Math the Easy Way yet, but so far it's been head & shoulders above this at demystifing everday math for me.
Math that Every Adult Should Know.......2004-06-05
As an educator (retired), I got an advance copy of this book. My first reaction was, "This is everyday math?!" Then in the third chapter it hit me: This is not necessarily what everyone knows (if that was the case, there would be no need for the book). It's what every American adult should know by the time they graduate from high school. Sadly, given the state of math education in this country, this book probably should have the subtitle "in an Ideal World." I recommend that anyone who wants to really understand math, and not just rush through it as some sort of evil necessity, study this book thoroughly -- after, or in addition to, their high school courses. And don't fret the abstract stuff. Math is abstract by its very nature.

Dragged Away From His Dahlias.......2007-08-12
"Travels with My Aunt" was penned by its greatly praised British author Graham Greene rather late in his long life, and his long, prolific, greatly-honored literary career. In fact, Greene wrote it past the point at which he divided his work into 'novels--' serious, like "The Power and the Glory," and 'entertainments,' lighter, like "Our Man in Havana." He probably would, however, have called it an 'entertainment.' Mind you, this novel never has been a critical favorite; nor has the movie, starring Maggie Smith, who was Oscar-nominated for the role of Aunt Augusta, made from it. (Most of his books were filmed).
The novel is told in first person by its narrator Henry Pulling, a never-married, presumably virgin, stuffy, retired bank manager, looking forward to a lifetime of cultivating his suburban dahlias. At his mother's funeral, he meets his Aunt Augusta, absent from his life since his christening. She shakes him up, drags him on exotic travels, and gives him some better reasons to live. (It's noticeable that there's a certain family resemblance to Patrick Dennis's "Auntie Mame," penned roughly a decade earlier. But these two books involve protaganists at different ends of life: a boy, and a retiree, and, let's face it, anything written by Graham Greene, no matter how late in his career, has his touch, and his thoughts.)
The plot's episodic, and not as tight as some of the writer's great spy stories. But the book's well written. Furthermore, you can see the Greene touch in some of the book's flavorful characters. In addition to Aunt Augusta, there's the Turkish cop, Colonel Hakim, one of several powerful third world law 'enforcers' created by Greene. There's 'Tooley,' the airhead hippie girl met on the Orient Express (played by Cindy Williams, of "Laverne and Shirley," in the movie.) And 'Wordsworth,' as Augusta calls him, an emigrant from Sierra Leone, a part of the world with which Greene was very familiar, as he'd spent World War II there as a spy. Wordsworth (played by Lou Gossett in the film) is fiercely in love with Augusta, a woman at least twice his age, and devotes his life to her.
One of the more challenging results of the first-person narration is that the reader, like Henry, doesn't know what Aunt Augusta is up to, until we're told. There's a longish period, in terms of this short book, when Augusta is out of touch, and Henry thinks of really solidifying his suburban retirement -- as if it could be much more solid, he's already pretty well set in concrete -- by marrying a sad local spinster. In another interesting use of the first person, Greene does not always tell us what Henry's thinking: when the narrator at last realizes some of the central facts of his Aunt's life -- some of us might ask what took him so long -- he doesn't share his thought processes with us.
"Travels" is short, and funny. And the subject matter is touching: a man no longer young, discovering family he didn't know he had, rescued from a dread life cultivating his dahlias by that family. What could be bad?
An enlightening way to spend an afternoon!.......2006-08-23
I picked this up despite my negative memories of Graham Greene from high school & college reading, and I can honestly say that I enjoyed this book. Although it's not the type of book that you can't put down, it always leaves you glad you picked it up.
The story of boring Henry and his "eccentric" Aunt Augusta is entertaining and might get you thinking about what a successful life is and how to best spend that journey. All the same, it's a light-hearted novel and not at all suffocating or depressing in the way it teaches the "lesson." I checked it out of the library for the first read, but plan to purchase a copy for my next long bus/train/car ride!
A TRUE CLASSIC IN EVERY SENSE!.......2006-05-26
This intelligent and entertaining masterwork remains with me for all of my days. I often reflect on this, or that passage from the book, it happens unexpectedly, without warning, or even motivation, yet there it will be, all encomposing and lurid. This writing becomes a part of you, ingested , it is there for all time; it will suddenly emerge filling the senses, a type of remembrence that you relate to past events experienced on a personal level. I often realize with dispare that the experience I'm remembering was related to me through a great work of literature, and then I smile fondly realizing that few works of writing have been affected in such a pleasurable manner. I only dispare for the poor souls that have never experienced this mesmerizing sequence of adventures, yet for the fortunate few who take this journey for the first time in all it's splendor and amazement, I only wish it were myself again releshing with abandon and joy this fantastic voyage for the first time!
Do travel with Aunt Augusta and Henry.......2005-10-22
Great premise: at his mother's funeral, Henry's long-estranged aunt, Augusta, tells Henry that his lifelong beliefs about his parentage are mistaken. This leads to the development of a relationship between early-retired banker Henry with his septuagenarian aunt, who has a most decidedly colorful background that is in fullest contrast to Henry's staid bachelorhood and isolated life. Lighthearted moments often develop from the contrast of Henry's straight-laced views and Aunt Augusta's rather unconventional perspectives about the importance of the means vs. the ends, laws, and romantic relationships. (Not to mention her thoughts on truth, which lead Henry to understandably doubt her revelation.) Augusta is a character, in both senses of the word, to be absorbed and enjoyed. Henry is the well-suited foil or backdrop for her. The British-ness of the writing, the product names, sometimes the pacing and phrasing were not sufficient to diminish the story, but led to some feelings of awkwardness. Some of the goings-on reflect well on the time the book was written, the late 60s, both its influence and international repercussions of World War II some 25 years after its conclusion. It was a pleasant read and I will both recommend it and look to more Greene, most likely his two most highly praised works: The Power and the Glory and The Heart of the Matter.
Loads of Fun.......2005-09-05
Primality know for his somber novels of great moral dilemmas usually in developing world setting, "Travels with My Aunt" is something of a departure for the great Graham Greene. With its often absurdly situations this is a deeply comic novel rich in humor.
The story centers on Henry Pulling, a recently retired banker. He is stuffy, unimaginative, and not one prone to fun. Shortly after he meets his eccentric aunt, who he has not seen since he was a young child, he ends up on whirlwind travels that are best left for the reader to discover for his or herself. Suffice to say, however, the novel is very funny and the new world the travels open up to Pulling are only one part of the fun. Certaily not one of Greene's deeper works, but definetly one of his more entertaining ones.
Enjoy.
