    Book Description

This book attempts what for many in the accounting profession has been the impossible: a unified accounting system for measuring and reporting the performance of human service organizations as well as firms in the profit sector. The model developed recognizes the centrality of the consumer and the significance of optimizing consumer preferences whether the consumer is an individual purchasing services and products in the profit sector or the consumer is society in the role of consumer-payer of the services and products of human service organizations. Equating society as the consumer-payer of human services leads to the use of societal income as a measure of the effectiveness of human service organizations. Accounting is a social institution whose chief function is measurement. Given a statement of goals, accounting should measure the achievement of these goals. Thus accounting can be viewed as a feedback system to report the differences between goals and their achievement. In a democratic society, the economic goal for its members should be their continuing gains in independence from a self-sufficiency viewpoint and satisfaction of their needs and wants from a consumption viewpoint. These are common goals in the profit and nonprofit sectors. The societal model developed by Herson, Gordon, and Cherny has long-run implications for the professions of accounting, human services, economics, and political science and the book will be a provocative work for professionals in these disciplines for some time to come.

    Book Description

When Betsy Howie became pregnant, she realized a frightening truth: She was about to lose control. So, she itemized her concerns: Can I physically handle it? Do I have the patience for the job? Can I have my career and take care of a baby? Will I be able to sidestep my own neuroses and negativity enough to raise an at least slightly healthy human being? And, of course: Do I have enough money?

Only the last question seemed answerable. "How much does a baby really cost?" she wondered-and began saving receipts. The result was Callie's Tally, the real-life, day-by-day diary of her daughter's first year of debt.

In this deliciously engaging and irreverent memoir, Callie's expenses-Pampers, formula, York peppermint patties for Mom's postpartum blues-mount as Howie searches for a tiny corner of order in a world otherwise lost to sleepless, timeless mayhem. Part Bridget Jones's Diary (after Bridget snags the boy) and part Operating Instructions (for the fiscally obsessed), this is a wickedly funny and fresh story of shifting relationships within a modern American family.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny.......2005-04-01

I loved this book. I laughed so much and insisted on reading passages to my mom and/or husband throughout the book. As a first time mom of a baby girl, it was so funny to hear her take on the first year.

It's very much in the same comic vein as the "girlfriend's guides" books. Raising a child is serious business, but you need to have a sense of humor!

I sympathize with her desire a) to take back some control over the tumultuous event of having a child and b) reclaim and reintegrate your "old" life into this new one. I loved reading the financial "categories" for her expenses.

I highly recommend the book and will add it to my list of baby shower gift books!

5 out of 5 stars Humerous Look at Finacial Part in Having a Child.......2004-04-22

I saw this book at a library display and decided to read it. What a refreshing and unique way of looking at having a baby, especially a daughter. I was able to relate to so many of the stories and laugh at the creativity of the author. Wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a soon-to-be first time mom!.......2004-01-16

Come on Jessica from Michigan, lighten up! You didn't "get" this book at all, did you even read it? She's not actually charging her daughter anything, just trying to figure out what it really costs financially, and even more so the huge life changes involved in having a child. And her eventual point is that we ALL owe each other... in ways that you can't ever really count, and it doesn't matter because you can't count what you get in return either. I certainly owe my mother more than I could ever pay her, for the financial, physical, and emotional sacrifices she's made. I expect that it will be the same way when I have a daughter... in fact, my having a daughter is one way of trying to repay my mother. That's just how it goes. This book made me think, more than anything else I've read, about what my mother's done for me, and the changes that I'll go through when my baby is born. I laughed, I cried, and I have a whole new appreciation for my mom, and for what I'm getting ready to do. I plan to buy it for the next friend who gets pregnant!

1 out of 5 stars This book left me bitter towards the woman who wrote it........2003-09-15

First of all, this woman has "unprotected sex for several weeks" and now she has the nerve to bill her first born for all the expenses. If she made the choice to to put herself in that situation then she should have been responsible for the outcome. Her daughter Callie was in no way indebted to her mother for her mother's actions. This book was dreadful and I can't imagine any mother indebting her own unborn child.
Take responsibility for your own actions, your child owes you nothing.

So I guess Callie will be billing her mother for all Callie's psychologist appointments when she is older.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book for a first time mom!!.......2003-07-07

Loved it. I wish I had it when my daughter was born. Betsy writes about so many of the ups and downs of the first year. I will be purchasing it for all girlfriends when their first children are born!

      Book Description

The size and jurisdiction of English royal government underwent sustained development in the thirteenth century, an understanding of which is crucial to a balanced view of medieval English society. The papers here follow three central themes: the development of central government, law and justice, and the crown and the localities. Examined within this framework are bureaucracy and enrolment under John and his contemporaries; the Royal Chancery; the adaptation of the Exchequer in response to the rapidly changing demands of the crown; the introduction of a licensing system for mortmain alienations; the administration of local justice; women as sheriffs; and a Nottinghamshire study examining the tensions between the role of the king as manorial lord and as monarch. Contributors: NICK BARRATT, PAUL R. BRAND, DAVID CARPENTER, DAVID CROOK, ANTHONY MUSSON, NICHOLAS C. VINCENT, LOUISE WILKINSON. ADRIAN JOBSON is at the National Archives, Kew.

          Book Description

Social indicators are an important tool for evaluating a country's level of social development and for assessing the impact of policy. Such indicators are already in use in investigating poverty and social exclusion in several European countries and have begun to play a significant role in advancing the social dimension of the European Union as a whole. The purpose of this book is to make a scientific contribution to the development of social indicators for the purposes of European policy-making. It considers the principles underlying the construction of policy-relevant indicators, the definition of indicators, and the issues that arise in their implementation, including that of the statistical data required. It seeks to bring together theoretical and methodological methods in the measurement of poverty/social exclusion with the empirical practice of social policy. The experience of Member States is reviewed, including an assessment of the National Action Plans on Social Inclusion submitted for the first time in June 2001 by the fifteen EU governments. The key areas covered by the book are poverty, including its intensity and persistence, income inequality, non-monetary deprivation, low educational attainment, unemployment, joblessness, poor health, poor housing and homelessness, functional illiteracy and innumeracy, and restricted social participation. In each case, the book assesses the strengths and weaknesses of different indicators relevant to social inclusion in the European Union, and makes recommendations for the indicators to be employed. Indicators for Social Inclusion in the European Union is being published at a critical stage in the evolution of the social agenda of the European Union. It is hoped that the report will play a role in widening public debate about the social dimension of Europe and that it will be of value to the social partners, to non-governmental and grass roots organizations, and to those living in poverty and social exclusion. It seeks to provide both a constructive background document at a crucial juncture in the evolution of the social dimension of the European Union and a reference work of continuing value.

From the supplier: The spread and acceptance of online banking is inevitable. However, such a trend does not mean that face-to-face banking services would soon become obsolete. Judging from the adoption of new technologies in the past, society tends to incorporate emerging technologies rather than replace older practices and inventions. The simultaneous availability of the two forms of banking services does not mean that the two services would be on equal footing. Customers' visits to concrete banking establishments will become minimal, but the practice shall not disappear.

From the supplier: It has been a tradition among financial institutions to participate in socially responsible activities by investing in affinity credit cards and community outreach programs. This practice started in the 1800s when religious institutions decided not to invest in businesses that are related to things that they morally condemn such as alcohol and tobacco. Hence, financial institutions made investment activities based on their own policies.

5 out of 5 stars Interactive OJT Training.......2007-04-17

Three sections. Thirty-two techniques. Four "Adult Learning Principles." An eight-step instructional design process. Three bonus techniques. By the numbers, this book adds up to one very valuable resource for on-the-job trainers who want to center their OJT directly on their learners. Pike, Solem, and Arch's "One-on-One Training" focus on just that.

Each activity is categorized by the purposes it serves: revisiting content; promoting safety; honoring values, giving control to the learner; encouraging directed thinking; encouraging active listening; giving positive feedback; or promoting reading, writing, or speaking. A good number of these are activities from "50 Creative Training Openers and Energizers" and "50 Creative Closers", cleverly adjusted to an OJT session which will have only one trainee. Others are new to this book, and designed specifically for only one trainee. "One-on-One Training" also includes short sections with advice for lecturing (when necessary) and using videos.

I have used most of these techniques. I have found the EFFECTIVENESS GRID to be a very useful tool for previewing and reviewing material, and CREATE A FILE has been an excellent means for me to provide learners with job aids. SEE ONE, DO ONE, TEACH ONE is the heart of OJT, and I have found INTERVIEWS to be a highly motivating activity for learners. If you're looking for some ideas to refocus your OJT on your learners, their needs, and the transfer of their learning to the workplace, this book is a great start.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of good ideas.......2001-05-16

I was so lucky to see Lynn train one time. She just blew me away. The training world will miss her. Don't miss this book if you do any one on one. Clear, concise and readable

                    1 out of 5 stars Not impressed!.......2001-05-04

This book is not worth the money you spend on it. Out of twenty inputs, there are only two training ideas that are worth any time reviewing. And, the last twenty pages have one question per page to use as icebreakers. You could search the web and find more effective training techniques.

                        Book Description

                              Description:
The effects of anionic-nonionic mixed surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) mixed with Triton X-100 (TX100), on the desorption and biodegradation of phenanthrene in soil-water system were investigated in an aim to improve the efficiency of surfactant bioremediation technology. Results indicated that the presence of SDS not only increased the solubilization of TX100 for phenanthrene, but also reduced the sorption of TX100 onto soils. As a result, the desorption efficiency of phenanthrene from the contaminated soil was greatly enhanced by mixed surfactant solutions compared with that by single TX100 solution and appeared to be positively related with the mole fraction of SDS in solution. Mixed surfactants with relatively smaller ratio promoted phenanthrene biodegradation, for example, the biodegradation percentage of phenanthrene in 1:9 SDS-TX100 mixed solutions was about 165% of that in the single TX100 solution at the same TX100 concentration of 1.6mmol/L in 24h. But the biodegradation was inhibited with larger ratio of SDS in the mixed solutions, which may be due to the preferential utilization of SDS by phenanthrene degraders. Thus, the selection of mixed surfactants should consider simultaneously the effects of SDS on desorption and biodegradation. The experimental results can be used to provide valuable information in designing the surfactant bioremediation technology for contaminated soils.

The Steinbeck Centennial Collection: The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, The Pearl, Cannery Row, Travels With Charley In Search of America (Boxed Set) Description: No writer is more quintessentially American than John Steinbeck. Born in 1902 in Salinas, California, Steinbeck attended Stanford University before working at a series of mostly blue-collar jobs and embarking on his literary career. Profoundly committed to social progress, he used his writing to raise issues of labor exploitation and the plight of the common man, penning some of the greatest American novels of the twentieth century and winning such prestigious awards as the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. He received the Nobel Prize in 1962, "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception." Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures.

The boxed set, containing deluxe trade paperback editions with french flaps, is being released in honor of the Steinbeck centennial being celebrated throughout 2002. 5 out of 5 stars The Steinbeck Centennial Collection.......2006-11-03

I purchased it to replace volumes
"borrowed" over the years and read all again, some for the first time in decades. They haven't changed and they never disappoint.
This would be a perfect gift for a young reader just beginning to build their adult collection.

                                    4 out of 5 stars well..........2006-07-04

excellent excellent EXCELLENT! what a set! my only problem is that penguin continues to ignore the fact that they should be printing on acid-free paper!! i don't get this? such a leading company, with amazing products, yet, how long will these books actually last before they start to deteriorate?

                                    5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection.......2005-10-25

I just moved to Salinas, CA when I ordered this set. I had never read John Steinbeck before, and thought this was a good time to start. Wow was I in for a treat! Phenomenal poetic language, incredible story lines, wonderful location descriptions. How exciting it is to read such stories taking place in the very settings I'm exploring now! I recommend this to others who haven't ever been here either, you may just find yourself with another destination on your "places to go list."

                                    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection.......2004-02-17

I just finished < > in my reading class,we even had discussed the similarities between Lennie and Forest Gump, and the differences between Steibeck's concise style and Hemingway's typical terseness.Afterward,I ordered < >,checked < >from my high school liabary. And now,you got a chance to read all of his masterpieces in the same time.I respectfully recommanded you to looked at Steinbeck's novels based upon Salina Valley,CA,his hometown,a heavenly countryside throughout the spiritial world of the master writter.I think Steinbeck's distinguishment is that he reflected two worlds in a character, both historically and mentally.Of course,he had written an epic with roustic American speciality.

                                    3 out of 5 stars The Pearl.......2003-01-04

There was a poor family in La Paz, in a small village. Kino and Juana had a son name Coyotito.
One day, Coyotito was pinched by a scorpion, but his parents did not have enough money to pay for the medication. They unexpectily found a big pearl from the sea, so they decided to sell it and use the money to save Coyotito. Unfortunately, no one was willing to pay a decent price for the pearl. Since the price offer in the village was not enough to pay for the medication, the couple then decide to go to the capital and hoped to find a better buyer who was willing to offer a better price. Although the parent knew better that there would be many obstacles and problem throughout the journey, their love for their son gave them bravery motivation to move on.
The story is very interesting, but the topic is not my favorite. The story is described in detail and it gives me many images as I read on. Therefore, I would give this ***.
