This is a natural follow-up to Ms. Clark's "e-Learning and the Science of Instruction." For me, no other author has written about e-Learning visual and textual design and content, with the authority, clearity, and explicitness as Ms. Clark. "Graphics for Learning," clearing links design concepts to supporting reseach in a manner not often found in instructional and graphic design books. I appreciate reading facts and not someone's opinion about why one should do one thing or the other. Especially for those designing e-Learning or distance learning this is a must have book.

The Best of Both Worlds.......2005-04-11

"Graphics for Learning" takes on the challenging task of bridging two ways of looking at instructional graphics: the academic research that deals with how people learn from graphics and the practical application of that research. You don't need a Phd to read and understand the research findings, as Clark and Lyons summarize and explain them well, with ample use of helpful graphics.
The books flows easily from the foundation of research into the practical planning of graphics for instruction. The emphasis is always on the crucial process of planning and thinking about graphics that support learning goals and fit the situation. The authors do a good job of integrating case studies and examples to make their points clear.
One thing I especially appreciate is that Clark and Lyons recognize the realities of time and budget constraints and offer advice and examples that work whether the budget is large or small.
This book is an excellent resource for instructional designers and others who are serious about taking their communications to a higher level of effectiveness.

Very Useful Reference.......2005-02-18

It is usually quite difficult to find a good How-To book in the Infographics/Instructional Design arena. So, I was quite delighted to discover this book by Dr Ruth Clark and another book (Creating Graphics for Learning and Performance : Lessons in Visual Literacy) by Dr Linda Lohr.

I have found these information very useful:
- 7 communication functions of graphics (decorative, representational, mnemonic, organizational, relational, transformational, interpretive)
- mapping of appropriate graphical functions (or types) to different content types (facts, concepts, processes, procedures, principles)
- numerous graphical examples for different content types
- numerous instructional design tips, e.g., chunking and sequencing to minimizing memory load, use of visual cues to direct attention, use of certain graphic types to build mental models (e.g., cause and effect)

What would have been even more useful could be the setup of an online Infographic Design resource where members of the public can collaboratively view, discuss and refine the guidelines, use and contribute more examples (especially), etc. Would certainly look forward to be involved in such an endeavor.

Buyer beware.......2004-12-29

I was extremely disappointed with this book. The theory is very inaccurate. The authors don't seem to have a grasp on what working memory is or on mental models. I was looking for a book that applies the practice of graphics in education to sound theory. This is not it.

If you want instructions on how to become a genius, read and practice this book. If you don't want to become a genius, but want to become a killer engineer, accountant, physicist, doctor, scientist, teacher or any other professional using math, read and practice this book.

Modern Math texts cite this book constantly. They elevate the 5 step process to the word of the (something). Unfortunately, the rest of the text is about performing step 3, solving the algebraic equation. Step 2, writing the equation is the harder part for most students. Practice step 2 every day, and you will become master of time and space. We got computers to do step 3, that's not the hard part.

I tell students this book is about how to solve word problems. It is not about math, but how to use it.

I found a copy of it in a stack of books in a sandwich shop on Main street. It belongs in every stack of books everywhere. It will improve the world.

Excellent book.......2007-08-12

I was turned onto this book by my boss. And it was a very good recommendation. I have had my group read it and even those in the group who were sceptics have been converted once I reminded them of the methods they used to sucessfully complete their projects.

If you want to figure out how to fix a satellite dish, program a piece of software or some other thorny problem, read this book. It will help.

Was hoping I could generalize the problem-solving tips here to my work as a programmer, but alas, other than a couple of great quotes ("simplex sigillum veri", for one), it's too much of a stretch. This book is really geared towards people teaching mathematics.

Great book for engineering.......2007-01-21

I know the original version seemed like it would be great for someone that study math or physics and was heavily involved with proofs. However after reading the whole book and with some time I was able to really apply it to how I solve engineering problems. I will be honest it took some trial and error but within a year I was able to completely changed the way I solved problems (i.e. it needed an overhaul). The area I use it the most is thermal fluid systems and have had many complements on the way I articulated or solved problems, and I'm not a genius. The book is helpful and for the price you could take away a couple of items with out a hit in the pocket and just be that much better at figuring out problems.

Hints for getting the most out of the first reading.......2006-12-17

This is a wonderful book. On a first reading it may seem a little confusing because the heuristics are organized alphabetically, rather than pedantically. This is not hard to overcome because Polya helpfully boldfaces related heuristics and by following the suggested threads you can get a fairly smooth read on the first reading. The way I dealt with it was I put sticky notes on the topics as I read them, so I could skim the ones I had already looked when threads hit a topic repeatedly.

I read this book many years ago, but it is still by my work station. I consult it when I get stuck on a problem, the heuristics do work.

For a first reading, the flipping around is annoying, but for reference purposes, the alphabetical order of the heuristics is quite convenience. I suspect that the first reading will not be your last, so the author's tradeoff was the right one.

Insightful historical & personal account of Israeli Occupation .......2006-08-07

This book by Mourid Barghouti captures the spirit of the Palestinian peoples in the poetic glances of one man's journey back to his homeland after exile and during occupation. It is every Palestinian's wish to live, work, play, breathe without the fear of death, torture, constant threats, and imprisonment of the occupation forces. Truly, every Palestinian needs to write their stories for the world to know... as the "Logic of Beings" indicates in this book. My heart goes out to the Palestinian people after reading such a depiction of unthinkable loss, constant uncertainty, and simple wishes of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

Palestinian poet Mourid Barghouti tells of a brief return to the West Bank where he lived as a boy and now may visit only by permission of the Israeli occupation authority. It is a bittersweet homecoming told with a poet's sensibility, emotions reflected in what seem like fragments of free association, as he remembers the years between 1948 and 1967 and notes the many changes that have taken place during his absence, from the growth of Israeli settlements to the impact of liberation politics on a new generation.

Identified as a dissident in the aftermath of 1967, he was expelled from Egypt where he had been a university student, was married and had become a new father. Barghouti has since lived as a displaced person in several different countries, a member of the Palestinian diaspora. He writes of his particular kind of homelessness with poignancy and sharp clarity. Interwoven are accounts of the deaths of friends and his brother Mounif, lost to the dark forces of political strife. Not surprisingly, there is anger, as well, in Barghouti's book. Anyone with an interest in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine would do well to hear him out.

Eloquent personal history that tells the Palestinian story.......2005-09-24

I love this book! I read it first in the original Arabic and was thrilled to discover that Ahdaf Soueif's masterful translation renders the spirit and the language of Barghouti's prose beautifully. This book has fast become my number one recommendation as an introductory book on the Palestinian experience. Barghouti captures the experiences of exile, occupation, and less than optimal "return" as no one has before. I know so many fellow Palestinians who have experienced exactly the range of emotion he describes crossing the bridge from Jordan to the occupied West Bank, or receiving that phone call at night in a foreign country, with relatives scattered across the globe. Barghouti's book humanizes Palestinian life in all its complexity, grief, humor, and presents to the reader in sincere and lucid language. This book is a must read for anyone hoping to understand Palestine and the Palestinians.

They refunded my book! And I needed it for school so now I'm in trouble. Why they post an option and then don't give it to you is annoying and harmfull. Oh well serves me right for using online shiping for school books.

My eyes have been opened.......2005-06-04

For a person with little exposure to conflict in the Mid-East, this is a very good book. He mentions a couple of wars that I'd never known about because of my age, which sparked interest. But more than that, his emphasis is on the HUMAN ASPECT of these conflicts, which current affair venues skim over. Barghouti mentions the conflicts and assassinations he's seen and felt through his life only as a backdrop to the way the people he knows and loves have been affected.

This is not a light read. The author addresses emotionally draining topics. But there was a sense of healing through the journey and resolution of the book, and a universal spirituality that unites humanity. It is a very powerful book.

This book was given to me, and I'm very glad because I would never have sought it out on my own. It is a surprising story which tells of pain and loss, and still offers hope.
