Accounting Theory: Essays by Carl Thomas Devine (Routledge New Works in Accounting History)
Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0415309883 |
Book Description
One of the outstanding accounting theoreticians of the twentieth century, Carl Thomas Devine exhibited a breadth and depth of knowledge few in the field of accounting have equaled. This book collects together eight previously unpublished essays on accounting theory written by Professor Devine.
Professor Devine passed away in 1998, prior to the significant scandals that have plagued accounting and business since the collapse of Enron and Arthur Andersen. Many of the essays collected here are particularly important given these events. The first three essays are devoted to ethics and provide profound insights into the importance of a profession's ethical presuppositions. The book then presents essays which provide a critical examination of the relevance of hermeneutics and deconstruction to an understanding of accounting practice and an analysis of the academic "game" particularly with respect to Professor Devine's experiences in the Florida university system. The final essay in the volume is devoted to acritique of rational choice theory applications in accounting.
Revisiting and building upon themes developed in earlier work, this collection of essays will be essential reading for accounting historians, accounting theoreticians and all those interested in the work of Carl Thomas Devine.

Competition, Efficiency, and Welfare: Essays in Honour of Manfred Neumann
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792382935 |
Book Description
Competition, Efficiency and Welfare contains a collection of papers in honor of Manfred Neumann. This collection was prepared as a tribute to a teacher and scholar, whose accomplishments have enriched various fields of economics. The magnitude of his interests is reflected in the breadth of topics covered in this volume: industrial economics, competition policy and related topics. However, if one unifying principle runs through Manfred Neumann's work, it is the belief in the power of competition. Born on May 16, 1933, Manfred Neumann studied economics at the University of Cologne. He graduated in 1960. In 1969 Manfred Neumann was appointed Professor of Economics at Nürnberg University. He was Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, President of the European Association for Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE) and Chairman of Industrial Organization Study Group of the Verein für Sozialpolitik. Most of his professional career has been spent at Nürnberg, where he has helped to make the Economic Institute one of the leading research centers in Industrial Organization. He has also been involved in various advisory activities. The volume contains 18 essays. The first twelve are grouped into four categories: Innovation and R&D (Part I), Cartels (Part II), Mergers and Merger Policy (Part III), and Methodological Issues in Industrial Organization (Part IV). These papers fall within the bounds of industrial economics, which has been Manfred Neumann's primary research interest throughout his career. Part V includes two papers on theories of international trade, which has been a recurring topic of interest for Manfred Neumann through the years. The last three papers look at broader policy and macroeconomic issues. Contributors to this volume include Karl Aiginger, David B. Audretsch, Paul A. Geroski, Stephen Martin and Dennis Mueller.

Essays on Accounting Theory in Honour of Joel S. Demski
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387303979 |
Book Description
Essays on Accounting Theory in Honour of Joel S. Demski is a collection of previously unpublished essays on accounting theory. The contributors are students, collaborators, colleagues and friends of Professor Joel S. Demski. Most of the contributors share Professor Demski’s view of accounting as the production and consumption of a very special and powerful economic good called information. Like Professor Demski, they also prefer an economic analytic approach to accounting theory. However, some contributors have chosen other perspectives on the field of accounting.
The book also contains an extensive review of Professor Demski’s own contributions, to the theory of accounting over the past four decades, written by Jerry Feltham, professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia. The integration of Accounting and the Economics of information worked out by Joel Demski and those he inspired has revolutionized accounting thought.

Effective Training Strategies: A Comprehensive Guide to Maximizing Learning in Organizations (Berrett-Koehler Organizational Performance Series)
James R. Davis , and Adelaide B. Davis Manufacturer: Berrett-Koehler Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 157675037X |
Book Description
In today's knowledge-based society, where intellectual capital is an organization's most competitive asset, learning is serious business. But to insure that learning actually happens takes more than a few clever activities and trendy techniques. Effective Training Strategies offers a comprehensive approach to creating a focused philosophy of learning, choosing the best approach to planning programs and activities, and developing appropriate systems for assessing results.Authors Davis and Davis draw on their own experiences as educators, their broad-based conversations with trainers, and a synthesis of the latest research from such diverse fields as psychology, sociology, philosophy, and communications, to describe seven powerful training strategies-each providing an easy-to-understand framework for thinking about a particular kind of learning. They provide a detailed description of each strategy-the well-researched learning theory behind it, illustrative examples of it in practice, its strengths and weaknesses, and practical guidance to its appropriate use-and demonstrate the strategy in action, showing how the facilitator can use it effectively to maximize learning. For managers, supervisors, trainers, engineers, and consultants alike, Effective Training Strategies demonstrates how to facilitate the many types of learning required to ensure that individuals, groups, and teams do their jobs more effectively, efficiently and, sometimes, even more creatively. This compendium of solid theory and current practice challenges the quality expectations that organizations have for learning, and offers a rich set of real-world examples of how to set new standards of excellence for knowledge-based performance, take the guesswork out of training, and contribute to increasing the overall effectiveness of organizations.

This book has a very strong grounding in basic learning theories and its relevant applications to the training arena. It also relates it in a easy to read approach that can make trainers like us learn from the authors.

The Turtle and the Stars: Observations of an Earthbound Astronomer
Arthur Upgren Manufacturer: Times Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 080507094X |
Book Description
No matter where we travel on Earth, the sky is the one great constant, bearing extraordinary colors and images in every kind of weather. Modern astronomy has revealed many secrets of the sky, and now the most intriguing ones have been distilled for a popular audience. With illustrations and engaging text, The Turtle and the Stars brings stargazers face-to-face with facts and lore. Topics include: What color is the atmosphere of Mars, and might it someday appear as blue as ours? How does the Milky Way cast shadows? Why is it that we never see the sunset as its actually occurring? Earthly questions range from why the Taj Mahal glimmers when you gaze up at it to why the top of the Empire State Building travels farther than its lower floors each day. With contagious enthusiasm, Arthur Upgren also invites us to contemplate the natural beauty of the universe through recollecting scenes such as a leatherback turtle depositing her eggs under a sky lit only by Venus, or witnessing a total solar eclipse in Venezuela. A treasure trove of facts sprinkled with references to history, literature, film, and music, this is the ultimate tour for armchair astronomers and naturalists alike.Customer Reviews:
Could have been a really great book.......2002-06-11
a) Mr. Upgren did not harp on the dark-skies issue in many of the chapters, and adding up to about 1/4 of the book. Granted, I think he's right about the uselessness of outdoor lighting wasting energy to the night sky. However, he goes way overboard on this, to great detriment of the book. It could have been in one epilogue chapter at the end.
b) the author explained what the turtles have to do with the rest of the book cause it's not really clear to me (oh, yeah they can navigate pretty well in dark skies, whoopeee!).
c) the writing were of the quality of Arthur C. Clark. It's not, but pretty readable anyway.
I did note that the basic math, on distances to the horizon, center of mass of earth/moon system, etc. seemed right. In fact, I noted no math/numerical errors, which is amazing in and of itself.
Very interesting; just ignore the preaching about the streetlights.

Microbial Growth Kinetics
N.S. Panikov Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0412566303 |
Book Description
Microbial Growth Kinetics opens with a critical review of the history of microbial kinetics from the 19th century to the present day. The results of original investigations into the growth of soil microbes in both laboratory and natural environments are summarised. The book emphasises the analysis of complex dynamic behaviour of microorganism populations. Non-steady states and unbalanced growth, multiple limitation, survival under starvation, differentiation, morphological variability, colony and biofilm growth, mixed cultures and microbial population dynamics in soil are all examined. Mathematical models are proposed which give mechanistic explanations to many features of microbial growth. The book takes general kinetic principles and their ecological applications and presents them in a way specifically designed for the microbiologist. This in itself is unusual but taken with the book's fascinating historical overview and the many fresh and sometimes controversial ideas expressed, this book is a must for all advanced students of microbiology and researchers in microbial ecology and growth.

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Woman*.......2003-11-07
The Man Who Loved Children is a novel about power structures within relationships. I really enjoyed Stead's genius with the monologue, Henny Pollit's excessive and abject speeches and Sam Pollit's frightening idealistic speeches that transform the entire world into a homogenous suburb. The novel is full of amazing realistic and violent detail.
Don't reach for this book if you want to relax or looking for an exciting plot. This is a book that resists easy reading. Unfortunately, the novel has never received the popularity it deserved because it was out of print for some years, making a comeback only in the 1960s when it was popularised in the U.S.
*Taken from James Joyce's Modernist masterpiece- A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
Masterpiece, but dark. Don't read the "introduction" first.......2002-10-17
That's why it gives away the plot.
I have no idea why the idiot publisher put it first this time.
Anyway, while it takes some patience to get through Sam's babytalk and Henny's rages, there is gold all the way through. The inner life of a house and family is conveyed as in few other books, with vividness and specificity.
Just don't expect to like any of the characters, and you will be rewarded with high drama and deep insight.

Creditor Rights and the Public Interest: Restructuring Insolvent Corporations
Janis Sarra Manufacturer: University of Toronto Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 080208754X |
Book Description
Creditor Rights and the Public Interest supports the greater representation of non-traditional creditors in the process of insolvency restructuring in Canada, concentrating particularly on restructuring under the federal Companies' Creditors' Arrangement Act (CCAA). Arguing in favour of the representation of such non-traditional creditors as workers, consumers, trade suppliers, and local governments, Janis Sarra describes the existing process of addressing their interests, analyzes four case studies that focus on non-creditor groups, and compares the Canadian approach to that of several other countries, such as Germany, France, and the United States.
Sarra draws on a comprehensive body of academic literature that covers a broad range of issuesinsolvency theory, corporate governance theory, legislative history, and bankruptcy and insolvency practice. She further surveys the relevant legislation and supplements her analysis with insights drawn from extensive primary research of court records and personal interviews with lawyers, judges, and government officials.
Creditor Rights and the Public Interest ultimately illustrates the way in which the concept of the public interest can be utilized to foreground the concerns of non-traditional stakeholders. Sarra provides a coherent account of the justification for recognizing these creditors by situating insolvency law in a legal regime that realizes a duty to maximize all of the interests and investments at stake in the corporation. In an academic field where scholarship is currently scarce, Sarra's text will be a welcome contribution.
