    Book Description

One of the outstanding accounting theoreticians of the twentieth century, Carl Thomas Devine exhibited a breadth and depth of knowledge few in the field of accounting have equaled. This book collects together eight previously unpublished essays on accounting theory written by Professor Devine.

Professor Devine passed away in 1998, prior to the significant scandals that have plagued accounting and business since the collapse of Enron and Arthur Andersen. Many of the essays collected here are particularly important given these events. The first three essays are devoted to ethics and provide profound insights into the importance of a profession's ethical presuppositions. The book then presents essays which provide a critical examination of the relevance of hermeneutics and deconstruction to an understanding of accounting practice and an analysis of the academic "game" particularly with respect to Professor Devine's experiences in the Florida university system. The final essay in the volume is devoted to acritique of rational choice theory applications in accounting.

Revisiting and building upon themes developed in earlier work, this collection of essays will be essential reading for accounting historians, accounting theoreticians and all those interested in the work of Carl Thomas Devine.

        Book Description

Mancur Olson wrote important books in the area of Collective Choice and is considered one of the founding fathers of Public Choice as a field of economics. The chapters in this volume cover three main areas of Olson's life work: Collective Action, Institutional Sclerosis and Market-Augmenting Government. Some chapters directly assess Olson`s contributions, focusing on distinguishing what was original in his works from what was already in the literature, and guaging his impact on the fields of public economics and economic history. Other chapters present new tests and frequently extend his work. Each of the chapters is a new piece of scholarship inspired by and intended to honor Mancur Olson, and extend his influence to another generation of Collective Choice scholars and researchers.

          Book Description

Competition, Efficiency and Welfare contains a collection of papers in honor of Manfred Neumann. This collection was prepared as a tribute to a teacher and scholar, whose accomplishments have enriched various fields of economics. The magnitude of his interests is reflected in the breadth of topics covered in this volume: industrial economics, competition policy and related topics. However, if one unifying principle runs through Manfred Neumann's work, it is the belief in the power of competition. Born on May 16, 1933, Manfred Neumann studied economics at the University of Cologne. He graduated in 1960. In 1969 Manfred Neumann was appointed Professor of Economics at Nürnberg University. He was Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, President of the European Association for Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE) and Chairman of Industrial Organization Study Group of the Verein für Sozialpolitik. Most of his professional career has been spent at Nürnberg, where he has helped to make the Economic Institute one of the leading research centers in Industrial Organization. He has also been involved in various advisory activities. The volume contains 18 essays. The first twelve are grouped into four categories: Innovation and R&D (Part I), Cartels (Part II), Mergers and Merger Policy (Part III), and Methodological Issues in Industrial Organization (Part IV). These papers fall within the bounds of industrial economics, which has been Manfred Neumann's primary research interest throughout his career. Part V includes two papers on theories of international trade, which has been a recurring topic of interest for Manfred Neumann through the years. The last three papers look at broader policy and macroeconomic issues. Contributors to this volume include Karl Aiginger, David B. Audretsch, Paul A. Geroski, Stephen Martin and Dennis Mueller.

5 out of 5 stars Critical Essays in Monetary Theory.......2004-07-15

The author, who is not primarily a monetary economist, has nevertheless written two papers on money, 'A Suggestions for Simplifying the Theory of Money' (1935) and 'Mr Keynes and the Classics' (1937), that have become very well known. These are reprinted here, but most of the other essays that are included are new. They are the fruit of a re-thinking of these older papers in the light of more recent work; they lead up to a view of the 'Keynesian revolution' which is rather different from that which is usually accepted. They conclude with a set of studies of the contributions to monetary theory of three eminent authors - Henry Thornton, of 'Paper Credit,' the Keynes of the 'Treatise,' and the Hayek of 'Princes and Production.'

            5 out of 5 stars Devine Inspiration.......2000-02-14

Dr. Devine's philosophies were viewed by many scholars as not only exemplar but legendary. I can remember when Berkeley thought he had radical and rebellious thought processes back in the sixties. Little did anyone know how important his work was, let alone how influencial it had become. He was truly a modest hero. He believed what he believed and didn't care what the general concensus thought. These essays are the best he could do. Which is more than most of us can comprehend. These books took a lifetime to compose and should be required reading for any accounting or finance doctoral student. I am most sure that I am not biased. These essays are of a high intensity level. Believe me when I tell you that these are a must read. They should be coveted. I should know since I spent all of my 34 years watching him write them on the dining room table. I know how incredible his work is and hope you will enjoy them as much as I have. I enjoyed being his daughter.

              Book Description

Essays on Accounting Theory in Honour of Joel S. Demski is a collection of previously unpublished essays on accounting theory. The contributors are students, collaborators, colleagues and friends of Professor Joel S. Demski. Most of the contributors share Professor Demski’s view of accounting as the production and consumption of a very special and powerful economic good called information. Like Professor Demski, they also prefer an economic analytic approach to accounting theory. However, some contributors have chosen other perspectives on the field of accounting.

The book also contains an extensive review of Professor Demski’s own contributions, to the theory of accounting over the past four decades, written by Jerry Feltham, professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia. The integration of Accounting and the Economics of information worked out by Joel Demski and those he inspired has revolutionized accounting thought.

                  Book Description

In today's knowledge-based society, where intellectual capital is an organization's most competitive asset, learning is serious business. But to insure that learning actually happens takes more than a few clever activities and trendy techniques. Effective Training Strategies offers a comprehensive approach to creating a focused philosophy of learning, choosing the best approach to planning programs and activities, and developing appropriate systems for assessing results.

Authors Davis and Davis draw on their own experiences as educators, their broad-based conversations with trainers, and a synthesis of the latest research from such diverse fields as psychology, sociology, philosophy, and communications, to describe seven powerful training strategies-each providing an easy-to-understand framework for thinking about a particular kind of learning. They provide a detailed description of each strategy-the well-researched learning theory behind it, illustrative examples of it in practice, its strengths and weaknesses, and practical guidance to its appropriate use-and demonstrate the strategy in action, showing how the facilitator can use it effectively to maximize learning. For managers, supervisors, trainers, engineers, and consultants alike, Effective Training Strategies demonstrates how to facilitate the many types of learning required to ensure that individuals, groups, and teams do their jobs more effectively, efficiently and, sometimes, even more creatively. This compendium of solid theory and current practice challenges the quality expectations that organizations have for learning, and offers a rich set of real-world examples of how to set new standards of excellence for knowledge-based performance, take the guesswork out of training, and contribute to increasing the overall effectiveness of organizations.

5 out of 5 stars If you only want to read a book about training...........2000-12-03

The authors write about different strategies that can be used to maximise learning in the organizations with key emphasis on learning theories, current trends in training and relevant examples from companies all around the world.

This book has a very strong grounding in basic learning theories and its relevant applications to the training arena. It also relates it in a easy to read approach that can make trainers like us learn from the authors.

This has been my most effective and enjoyable read in this area. Like the authors would say, it has maximised my learning experience!

3 out of 5 stars Intereresting case studies, but weak in theory.......1999-04-30

The book is filled with interesting examples of training programs around the world; however, the strategies overlap and are lacking in solid theory and substance.

5 out of 5 stars Substantive and Relevant.......1998-12-06

I really like two things about this unique and practical book. The first is that the seven training strategies come from a solid analysis of the learning challenges facing adults in organizations. The second is that substance of the seven strategies comes from solid learning research-- unlike the gimmicks and games featured in many training books.

Earthly questions range from why the Taj Mahal glimmers when you gaze up at it to why the top of the Empire State Building travels farther than its lower floors each day. With contagious enthusiasm, Arthur Upgren also invites us to contemplate the natural beauty of the universe through recollecting scenes such as a leatherback turtle depositing her eggs under a sky lit only by Venus, or witnessing a total solar eclipse in Venezuela. A treasure trove of facts sprinkled with references to history, literature, film, and music, this is the ultimate tour for armchair astronomers and naturalists alike.

4 out of 5 stars Could have been a really great book.......2002-06-11

This book really got my attention because I was a hobbyist astronomer many year's back. It's a fascinating subject. Mr. Upgren intended to write a bunch of rambling essays on the subject, while teaching some basics at the same time. This would be in the manner of Arthur C. Clark and H.A. Rey (also of "Curious George" fame). It could have been a much better book if:

                      a) Mr. Upgren did not harp on the dark-skies issue in many of the chapters, and adding up to about 1/4 of the book. Granted, I think he's right about the uselessness of outdoor lighting wasting energy to the night sky. However, he goes way overboard on this, to great detriment of the book. It could have been in one epilogue chapter at the end.

                      b) the author explained what the turtles have to do with the rest of the book cause it's not really clear to me (oh, yeah they can navigate pretty well in dark skies, whoopeee!).

                      c) the writing were of the quality of Arthur C. Clark. It's not, but pretty readable anyway.

I did note that the basic math, on distances to the horizon, center of mass of earth/moon system, etc. seemed right. In fact, I noted no math/numerical errors, which is amazing in and of itself.

Very interesting; just ignore the preaching about the streetlights.

                          Book Description

Microbial Growth Kinetics opens with a critical review of the history of microbial kinetics from the 19th century to the present day. The results of original investigations into the growth of soil microbes in both laboratory and natural environments are summarised. The book emphasises the analysis of complex dynamic behaviour of microorganism populations. Non-steady states and unbalanced growth, multiple limitation, survival under starvation, differentiation, morphological variability, colony and biofilm growth, mixed cultures and microbial population dynamics in soil are all examined. Mathematical models are proposed which give mechanistic explanations to many features of microbial growth. The book takes general kinetic principles and their ecological applications and presents them in a way specifically designed for the microbiologist. This in itself is unusual but taken with the book's fascinating historical overview and the many fresh and sometimes controversial ideas expressed, this book is a must for all advanced students of microbiology and researchers in microbial ecology and growth.

                            Description:
A mathematical model describing the kinetics of continuous production of single cell protein from cheese whey using Kluyveromyces fragilis was developed from the basic principles of mass balance. The model takes into account the substrate utilization for growth and maintenance and the effect of substrate concentration and cell death rate on the net cell growth and substrate utilization during the fermentation process. A lactose concentration below 1.91g/L limited growth of yeast cells whereas a lactose concentration above 75g/L inhibited the growth of the yeast. The model was tested using experimental data obtained from a continuous system operated at various retention times (12, 18 and 24h), mixing speeds (200, 400 and 600rpm) and air flow rates (1 and 3vvm). The model was capable of predicting the effluent cell and substrate concentrations with R^2 ranging from 0.95 to 0.99. The viable cell mass and lactose consumption ranged from 1.3 to 34.3g/L and from 74.31% to 99.02%, respectively. A cell yield of 0.74g cell/g lactose (close to the stoichiometric value of 0.79g cell/g lactose) was achieved at the 12h retention time-3vvm air flow rate-600rpm mixing speed combination. The total biomass output (viable and dead cells) at this combination was 37g/L.

                              Description:
Priming effects are expressions of complex interactions within soil microbial communities. Thus, we aimed at building a microbial population growth model which could deal with different substrates, resources and populations. Our model divides the decomposition/growth process at the population level in two stages, mimicking mechanisms taking place at molecular and cellular scales: (1) the first stage is a reversible process whereby microbial biomass capture their substrate to form a complex within definite proportions; (2) the second stage is the irreversible rate-limiting utilization of substrate per se. It is supposed to be a first order process with respect to the quantity of complex. We put these assumptions into equations using an analogy with chemical reactions at equilibrium. We show that this model (1) provides a mathematical formalism that bridges the gap between first order decay of substrates and Monod kinetics; (2) sets constraints on the possible combinations of microbial functional traits, yielding microbial strategies in agreement with observations; (3) allows to model both positive and negative priming effects, and more generally complex interactions between the various components of a soil system. This model is designed to be used as a kernel in any soil organic matter model.

Sam and Henny Pollit have too many children, too little money, and too much loathing for each other. As Sam uses the children's adoration to feed his own voracious ego, Henny watches in bleak despair, knowing the bitter reality that lies just below his mad visions. A chilling novel of family life, of the relations between parents and children, husbands and wives, The Man Who Loved Children is acknowledged as a contemporary classic.AUTHORBIO: Christina Stead was the author of over a dozen works of fiction and the recipient of The Patrick White Prize. She was born in Australia in 1902 and died in 1983.

5 out of 5 stars "Now they believe in their poor little dad".......2007-06-03

The human being in the title of Christina Stead neglected masterpiece "The Man Who Loved Children" is Sam Pollit, a person in his late thirties but who acts as if he was a kid - at least most of the time when he is with his kids. For them, he is a sort of `jealous god', as describes Randall Jarrell in the introduction to the Picador edition.

On the other hand, Henrietta, aka Henny, Sam's wife and the mother of most of his children, is the incarnation of the devil. Selfish and mean, she threats to kill their child a dozen of times throughout the narrative. However much she is not a good person, Stead doesn't make of Sam a saintly figure - he is just human. And surprisingly, so is Henny.

This is the most beautiful quality of "The Man Who Loved Children" it is a book populated by people that the readers feel they are made of flesh and blood, not made up characters for a narrative purpose. The theme here is family and its dynamics. It is natural that Sam is a man who likes children - specially his - because he is somehow a child who uses strange language, and acts as if not believing the world is real and mean.

The Pollit kids are as just as any kid we know. They like to play, don't like to go to school, behave bad sometimes, and are full of dreams and innocence. This portray of family created by Stead makes "The Man Who Loved Children" one of the most important books written about the subject.

Sam is a man who does not believe in God, but in Science. He says that his kids now believe in him, `their poor little Dad', but when they grow up, they will `believe in Faraday, Clerk, Maxwell, and Einstein". This clearly exemplifies how the world is shaped in his point of view. But the book cannot be read as the clash between science and faith, since Henny is not a religious person. This is a narrative about family ties and all the troubles that come with once we want to keep these ties alive.

5 out of 5 stars Novels can do that? .......2006-02-14

I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to experience the trials of a smart family coping and not coping with their ignorance, unemployment, poverty, conflicts of morality and vision. Witness the dynamics of the Pollit family - depictions of life on a magnitude of veracity itself. Proving as no other twentieth century novel Tolstoy's thesis as stated in Anna Karenina "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." Here we find literary documentation of an engaging, charming, joyful group with a unique brand of unhappiness as bitter as madness. Madness of high acidity - both propositions packaged in to one loose baggy flowing monster. An incredible accomplishment.

5 out of 5 stars It kidnaps you!.......2005-12-19

I think this book is one of th first books I ever read that pulled me in head over heels, and I've just reread it and am bowled over again by coming up for air after being inside the family of the Pollits. This book is painful but absolutely brilliant, and no one who loves literature should live his life without reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Woman*.......2003-11-07

The Man Who Loved Children by Christina Stead is a rare literary masterpiece. It tells the tale of the inner life of the Pollit family (Sam and Henny Pollit with 6 children). The novel is representative of Christina Stead's past. And Louie, the protagonist, is of course, a version of young Stead who grew up in Sydney.

The Man Who Loved Children is a novel about power structures within relationships. I really enjoyed Stead's genius with the monologue, Henny Pollit's excessive and abject speeches and Sam Pollit's frightening idealistic speeches that transform the entire world into a homogenous suburb. The novel is full of amazing realistic and violent detail.

Don't reach for this book if you want to relax or looking for an exciting plot. This is a book that resists easy reading. Unfortunately, the novel has never received the popularity it deserved because it was out of print for some years, making a comeback only in the 1960s when it was popularised in the U.S.

*Taken from James Joyce's Modernist masterpiece- A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece, but dark. Don't read the "introduction" first.......2002-10-17

The introduction, which is by Randall Jarell (not Doris Lessing) was originally intended as an Afterword, and is so published in previous editions of the book.

That's why it gives away the plot.

I have no idea why the idiot publisher put it first this time.

Anyway, while it takes some patience to get through Sam's babytalk and Henny's rages, there is gold all the way through. The inner life of a house and family is conveyed as in few other books, with vividness and specificity.

Just don't expect to like any of the characters, and you will be rewarded with high drama and deep insight.

This book is not helpful in any way. I am taking bankruptcy now and everytime I try to use this book the information I need is not included, or it only covers the topic in an extremely general manner. For a much better supplement use the debtor creditor examples and explanations. It is much better than this book.

                                                    Book Description

Creditor Rights and the Public Interest supports the greater representation of non-traditional creditors in the process of insolvency restructuring in Canada, concentrating particularly on restructuring under the federal Companies' Creditors' Arrangement Act (CCAA). Arguing in favour of the representation of such non-traditional creditors as workers, consumers, trade suppliers, and local governments, Janis Sarra describes the existing process of addressing their interests, analyzes four case studies that focus on non-creditor groups, and compares the Canadian approach to that of several other countries, such as Germany, France, and the United States.

Sarra draws on a comprehensive body of academic literature that covers a broad range of issues—insolvency theory, corporate governance theory, legislative history, and bankruptcy and insolvency practice. She further surveys the relevant legislation and supplements her analysis with insights drawn from extensive primary research of court records and personal interviews with lawyers, judges, and government officials.

Creditor Rights and the Public Interest ultimately illustrates the way in which the concept of the public interest can be utilized to foreground the concerns of non-traditional stakeholders. Sarra provides a coherent account of the justification for recognizing these creditors by situating insolvency law in a legal regime that realizes a duty to maximize all of the interests and investments at stake in the corporation. In an academic field where scholarship is currently scarce, Sarra's text will be a welcome contribution.
