Not a book that can be recommended.......2004-01-27
This book simply does not explain;and not for student. If you really want to buy, try
Modern Advanced Accounting By E. John Larsen.
Save trees and retire this dog.......2003-11-25
This book was required for my college class. It is clearly designed for the student who enjoys reading textbooks over and over again, just to find the smallest bit of information; versus those who need information fast and reliable.
Not designed for modern day accelerated learning. There are barely any examples and no callouts.
The authors must be simply trying to get their 35 pages per chapter quota. It would be interesting to see what this book would be like if they were compensated based upon student comprehension instead.
With Excel, Hoyle's Book Excels.......2002-06-12
I had to use this book for my Advanced Accounting class at the U of I at Chicago, and I followed it along with Bill Gates' Excel. Even without an available student's solutions manual, I recommend this book.
The learning approach I employed was different. I used the exhibits, figures, and other tables, and duplicated them in Excel. Within the cells, I created formulas to derive the numbers shown in each debit (credit) line item in the worksheet. When it came time to try a different problem, I just changed the inputs, and in most cases, the numbers fell into place. If something didn't, it usually meant that I had to modify or add to a formula or input until the entire worksheet balanced.
After each chapter, the instructor provided the solutions so that we were able to check our answers, but in most cases, I really didn't need them because the answers would just reinforce the solutions that I derived.
With this book and Excel, learning advanced accounting (consolidations) was fun and intellectualy stimulating, and I learned a lot. Moreover, I refined my Excel skills. I just hope I don't become too overconfident and not sufficiently study for the consolidations portion of the CPA exam! :-)

Must read for HR students.......2005-09-20
As a student of the HRD program at GSU, I found the book very helpful in providing a starting point for my career. The chapter discussing the various 'hats' that HR professionals wear provided insight into what a potential job in a corporation may look like for a new graduate and job seekers alike. I was impressed with the case studies and the wealth of experience that both doctors shared with their audience. I would recommend all students and practitioners read this book and keep it as a reference.
Human Resources - Just Ask the Experts.......2005-05-14
This book is a superbly rounded picture of Human Resources as it exists today in most institutions, corporate or otherwise. It offers a versatile model for viewing HR in an organized way and applies it differentially so that it makes sense across settings. Sprinkled throughout are interesting case studies showing ways the model works in practice. The authors' rich variety of HR experience as well as their years in the business sum to a formidable background in the field. They are eminently suited for this book... and it shows. In addition, vignettes and pointers from seasoned HR leaders interviewed by the authors are liberally and poignantly cited, adding more credibility and real-life flavor.
Despite their unassailable resume for writing the book the Kahnweilers maintain humble but optimistic attitudes regarding what can happen in HR. They honor individual differences in the application of their ideas, noting the variety and sometimes unpredictability of human experience that calls for special skills for HR professionals. They posit self knowledge as one important trait for facing HR challenges and outline critical personal areas as well as constructive ways to achieve optimally in those areas.
We live in times of downsizing, mergers and other strains of economic fluctuation. The Kahnweilers have expertly pointed to some overall strategies and critical tactics for surviving and thriving during what can become discouraging trials for Human Resource professionals.

Book Description
A new branch of physics, black hole gravitohydromagnetics (GHM) is developed from the rudiments to the frontiers of research. GHM describes plasma interactions that combine the effects of gravity and a strong magnetic field, in the vicinity (ergosphere) of a rapidly rotating black hole. This topic was created in response to the astrophysical quest to understand the central engines of radio loud extragalactic radio sources. The theory describes a "torsional tug of war" between rotating ergospheric plasma and the distant asymptotic plasma that extracts the rotational inertia of the black hole.

Book Description
This book provides, for the first time, clear, authoritative guidance on removing graffiti and protecting surfaces from further attack.
Customer Reviews:
No Good.......2006-10-06
This book is not only overpriced. But, it is outdated as well...by 15 years. Making this book more or less useless in regards to removing graffiti. Because, newer chemicals are being used to remove newer dye type components of ink and paint that is used to deface property with graffiti.
You are better off to save your money and buy a book that is able to match the graffiti of today. I think common sense dictates this.
Getting Rid Of Graffiti.......2001-01-19
If you have an interest in removing graffiti or protecting buildings from graffiti then this book will give you the best guidlines of how to proceed. The author's experience comes from his own studies and implementation of graffiti removal on the London Underground. The book not only explains the psychology of graffiti gangs/individuals, but also the best techniques of removal and protection from the various forms of graffiti on different surface types and locations. It's explains how it's techniques have been proven through actual case studies in London and New York as well as providing key addresses and contact details of suppliers of the tools and chemicals needed in the process. Additionally, it provides charts for the best methods to proceed for removing graffiti with the most appropriate chemicals and methods. The only downside to the book is that it was written in 1991 and has not been updated to list the latest chemical products. However, if it's something you're serious about then this book is a must.

Book Description
The first book in the history of mankind to challenge on scientific, philosophical and plane common sense grounds, at the same time and inside the same book, both the scientific theories as well as the religious teachings about the origin of life and human beings. The only book not backed or proded by any scientific or religious interest group
Customer Reviews:
Badly Written, Badly Researched.......2004-03-11
This book is shocking. Its potential to be a well thought out, well presented challenge to Darwin's theory of evolution by means of natural selection was let down by a remarkable lack of knowledge and understanding of the subject and a laughable approach to attempted scientific writing. El Ayouty justifies his lack of scientific language by claiming this makes it more accessible to the layperson, but instead it becomes a book for the brainless, with no references to papers or particular work by any scientists, and therefore no justification with evidence for any suggestions he puts forward. His experience of good scientific technique is clearly minimal, as there is no science in the book whatsoever. Whatever can claim to be taught biology is quoted incorrectly or simply wrong, with no foundation or research-based backing. The list of mistakes made about biology and evolution is too long to touch on here, I'm sure the author has received much in the way of corrective material already! My advice to anyone who reads this book is to read another one, or to take a course in macro-biology. Some biochemistry wouldn't hurt as well! Poor Cherif El Ayouty! He has tried to write a book on a subject which he has come across (not specialised in), seen it to be a bit doubtful, decided to be different and question this subject. Unfortunately, though questioning things is always good, deciding by yourself that, just to be different, you will come up with an alternative theory and discard any previous attempts is not always the best idea, especially when your alternative involves an alien culture. Need I say more? El Ayouty claims without question that evolution by means of natural selection has as much evidence for it as invasion of Earth by alien cultures. I refer El Ayouty to the numerous occurrences of natural selection in the field, the laboratory, the home, the hospital etc, where evolution is continuous and observable. Once again, poor Cherif! I lament the ignorance shown within this book! Take nothing in "Goodbye Darwin", dear unfortunate reader, as truth. Unless the person in question already has knowledge of the subject, no-one should ever be exposed to this cascade of misunderstanding and untruthfulness, for fear of brainwashing. To make matters even worse, El Ayouty makes several comments which verge on racism. Whether this is mere paranoia on my part is up for debate, but references to 'blacks, whites, browns, reds and yellows', the differences in childbirth between African and European women, and the suggestion that we are all almost different species, are hard to fathom, and certainly conflict with El Ayouty's description of himself as open-minded when it comes to that sort of thing.
To write more would be either to continue writing on El Ayouty's writing, or to start correcting some of his mistakes, both of which are unnecessary in this review, so I'll round of with another final warning to a prospective buyer: if you are to buy this book, bear in mind that it is representative of all that is NOT science or biology, it does not give what it claims to, and it is not an alternative to Darwin.

Book Description
In a volume he describes as "a series of covert and not-so-covert autobiographical pieces," Jonathan Lethem explores the nature of cultural obsession—from western films and comic books, to the music of Pink Floyd and the New York City subway. Along the way, he shows how each of these "voyages out from himself" has led him to the source of his beginnings as a writer. The Disappointment Artist is a series of windows onto the collisions of art, landscape, and personal history that formed Lethem’s richly imaginative, searingly honest perspective on life. A touching, deeply perceptive portrait of a writer in the making.
Customer Reviews:
Might be worth reading BEFORE you read other works by Letham.......2007-03-23
Anyway, I sure wish I'd read this one BEFORE I'd read Motherless Brooklyn and some of his other works, as this collection gives insight into the novelist himself. It is not fiction, but a sort of memoir or a set of essays that focus on things that interest Lethem as well as parts of his life. You'll discover quite a bit about him here, all written very well.
There is quite a lot of variety in this book but I found the parts that focused on his family, his early, rather unconventional life and all the events, large and small, that affected him, to be most engaging for me. I could see how certain aspects related to his books He also writes quite a bit about popular culture and he is the only writer I've read who has admitted to a similar obession to me- watching and rewatching favorite movies, sometimes more than 20, 30...even 40 times. But all this makes sense to me in the context of Lethem's work.
I also happen to believe that it is the losses or more difficult parts of our life that often form the basis for our creativity, our urge to understand, come to terms with or even transcend that loss. Letham admits to being affected by loss, a particular loss, but I'll let you read the book to find out what that was (I hate spoilers). Well worth buying and for those of you short on time, you can read just about any essay in this book, in any order. A DEFINITE plus for those of us who are short on time. This is NOT, however, a book to just read lightly or skim through. There is plenty to think about, sink your intellectual teeth into...and all that.
Amazing writing.......2006-11-23
The reason to read this collection of personal essays, is not their subjects, but the thoughfulness of the author and his simply amazing writing skill. Regardless of my interest in the topics, if found them all captivating -- from the consistence of his brilliant writing and the deeply personal cast he lent to each of them. The essay about his father, the painter, is deeply affecting. Lethem's insights into what shaped him as an author and as a person are so candid and meaningful. Now I feel I will be able to read his novels next with a broader perspective into what went into them.
??? how could others give this 2 stars.......2006-06-23
i'm not sure how anybody could give this less than 4 stars. If you became a teenager in the 70's, this book is the rarest treasure.
Companionable Writing But..........2006-04-01
The mock music reviews, the odd bits of arcane conversation, and all the other eddies of thinking that appear in The Fortress of Solitude evoked curiosity I hoped this book would fulfill. What sort of essayist would Lenthem be? He is certainly a skilled one. His prose is direct and honest while being, as you'd expect, witty and creative. As a companion piece to his novel, this collection explains a great deal. The chief trouble with this memoir, however, is that Lenthem ultimately leaves his audience behind, pursuing his literary and pop-cultural obsessions past a point readers can follow. By focusing on the books, movies, and music that forged his character, Lethem risks self-indulgence. The early death of his mother, his unconventional upbringing, and his father's artistic distance promise emotinal payoff, but this collection devolves. By the end, human concerns seem less important to Lenthem than the content of his bookshelves. He opens his closets...and reveals stuff.
The Essay as Memoir.......2006-03-10
This is a particularly apt title, as I find Lethem's fiction either completely exhilarating (Gun With Occasional Music, Motherless Brooklyn, half his short stories) or completely disappointing (Amnesia Moon, The Fortress of Solitude, the other half of his short stories). This slim collection of nine essays (all but one previously published in various magazines) falls into my disappointing camp. To be fair, I simply saw "Lethem" and "Essays" on the cover and thought "sweet!". What I failed to realize is that the essays are less about their ostensible topics than they are about Lethem. And since I'm not particularly fond of memoir or biography, it follows that most of the essays did very little for me.
"Defending The Searchers" is about Lethem's relationship with the 1956 John Ford and John Wayne film The Searchers. This is an excellent film which often appears on "Top 100" of all time film lists, and yet is problematic in some ways. Even though the essay is really about Lethem's obsession with a cultural artifact, it's probably best read after you've seen the film. I only read a page or two of the title story before moving on, as I wasn't particularly interested in the writer Edward Dahlberg. In "13, 1977, 21" Lethem examines his obsession with the first Star Wars film (21 viewings) and how that interacted with his mother's cancer-related decline in health. He writes well about the experience of going to the films, the physical details of the environment, but the larger theme of his use of the film never really connected with me.
My favorite essay was "Speak, Hoyt-Schermerhorn", about Lethem's childhood Brooklyn subway station. Again, here he writes very well about place, and the essay is enjoyable simply on that level alone. Those who read his last novel, "The Fortress of Solitude" will find many familiar themes in "Identifying With Your Parents", which delves deep into Lethem's obsession with comics and the childhood friends who shared this obsession. Again, one's connection with the writing is probably enhanced if one is well-versed in the intricacies of the Jack Kirby/Stan Lee relationship and the cast of '60s comic book characters. Another good essay is "You Don't Know Dick", which examines another Lethem obsession, the collected works of prolific science-fiction writer Philip K. Dick.
I skipped over "Lives of the Obsessives", which is about Lethem's father, who is a painter. The most traditionally critical essay (that is, least corrupted by Lethem's own life) is "Two or Three Things I Dunno About Cassavettes", and again, is best read by those with a knowledge of John Cassavettes' film oeuvre. The final piece is "The Beards", in which Lethem attempts to relate his pop-culture obsessiveness -- and if the collection makes nothing else clear, it's that when Lethem's fancy seizes on something, he becomes obsessive to the point of autism -- to his own work. But ultimately I don't really care about Lethem the person, or how his mind works, or how that relates to his fiction, I'm only interested in the final product of his creative mind -- and so this collection of essays had little to offer me, although I'm sure others will find it much more enjoyable.

Book Description
Laws enabling the avoidance of transactions are an important and complex part of insolvency legislation. This book is the first to be solely devoted to this topic, enabling these powers to be examined in greater depth than has previously been possible. The book analyses these provisions, and related rules of common law and equity, in the context of both corporate and personal insolvency law. A wide range of practical issues are considered, including the link between transaction avoidance and director disqualification proceedings; the funding of the avoidance action; and evidence gathering. The extent to which other remedies, such as an action for misfeasance, can be pursued in addition to, or as an alternative, to proceedings under the transaction avoidance provisions is examined in detail In the area of bankruptcy law particular attention is paid to pensions, the family home and divorce proceedings. The complicated issue of cross border transaction avoidance is considered in detail. The book also contains some important new arguments relating to the issue of entitlements to any sums recovered as a result of an avoidance action, setting out the existing law, as established in Re Yagerphone but arguing that this case does not sit easily with the provisions of the Insolvency Act 1986.
