              Book Description

Is it possible that extraterrestrial life forms exist within our Galaxy, the Milky Way? This book offers a critical analysis by leading experts in a range of sciences, of the plausibility that other intelligent lifeforms do exist. Exploration of the Solar System, and observations with telescopes that probe deep space, have come up empty handed in searches for evidence of extraterrestrial life. Many experts in the fields of astronomy, biology, chemistry and physics are now arguing that the evidence points to the conclusion that technological civilisations are rare. After ten billion years, and among hundreds of billions of stars, we may well possess the most advanced brains in the Milky Way Galaxy. This second edition contains many new and updated aspects of extraterrestrial research, especially the biological viewpoint of the question.

              5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-08-26

Many interesting topics. It reachs the same conclusion as others serious books I have read: We are probably alone! Unfortunately.

4 out of 5 stars Out the main road.......2003-02-28

Certainly, this book is different. Unlike a large fraction of the books published about extra-terrestrial, it jumps above the Drake equation and other classic idea and bring new reflexions and concepts. Very few books does that: Inteligente life in the Universe Shlovsky and Sagan, Cosmic Connection Sagan, Extraterrestrial Asimov and After Contact from Alan Harrison. If you are already familiar with the main ideas of the field, this book will add a new dimension to your reflexion. Beyond that approach you are in the realm of astrobiology, which is really a different thing.

4 out of 5 stars The classical and largely skeptical SETI volume, revised.......1999-09-11

They aren't here, that's for sure-are is it? Nothing is sure in
this wide-ranging collection of essays. Opinion seems fairly evenly
divided: about half say we are probably alone in the galaxy, and the
other half say we probably have intelligent neighbors. Clear to me is
that extraterrestrial life is very, very likely, since life itself is
probably-as several of the writers in this volume assert-an
emergent property of matter and energy. "Intelligent" or
communicating extraterrestrial life is another matter. The guess here
is that it is much less common.

Jared Diamond, who writes one of the
essays, makes the point that intelligence, as we define it, has
evolved here on earth only once, and so the argument from convergent
evolution, sometimes advanced to support there being intelligent life
elsewhere in the galaxy, is not convincing. Diamond gives the example
of the woodpecker which did not evolve in Australian, nor did any
other bird converge sufficiently to assume the woodpecker's niche
              there.

The damnable thing about the arguments both for and against
intelligent extraterrestrial life is they are all based on
assumptions: if your assumptions differ, your conclusions almost
              certainly will.

              Another problem is defining "intelligent"
life, or even life itself, for that matter. One of the writers
defines life in terms of matter that goes through a Darwinian
evolution, which I guess is the way life is defined these days: seems
strangely narrow, but maybe not. The amazing truth about intelligent
life is we may be looking right at it and not recognize it!

              This
is an excellent (although uneven) book that I read at varying degrees
of attention: some of it is highly technical, and some is popular.
It's revision of the 1982 edition. The title refers to the quote from
Fermi, whose famous opinion about extraterrestrial intelligent life
was summed up in the skeptical phrase: "Where are they?" What he meant
was, if they existed they'd be here by now. This book addresses that
argument, mostly in agreement with Fermi. One authority estimates
that humanoid-like beings would have explored the entire galaxy in 60
million years. My question (and the question of others) is WHY would
they? Further I suspect that ETI may not share our psychology, and
have no desire to explore at all. Or may have no need to explore, or
may have explored so long ago there is no trace...etc. One author
comes close to the old idea that the stars themselves are
"alive" by postulating life forms that live within the stars
as "plasmobes." He even sees possible life on neutron
              stars.

My bottom line belief is that intelligent life evolves into
something that we can't recognize as being alive (and, paradoxically,
maybe it isn't). It may be that life is just a primitive step on the
way to Becoming; that our consciousness is just a trick of the
evolutionary mechanism, and that it is information itself that is
alive, and that "real" "intelligence" in the
universe is something beyond our kin and beyond our ability to
comprehend in the slightest, just as our day-to-day concerns are
beyond the comprehension of a bacterium.

Though Jonas Salk is the stuff of legends, Ronald Reis has managed to ferret out historical bits the reader is not likely to have heard. His careful research provides both personal insights and a chance at understanding the polio epidemic that swept the world in the last century. Reis has a very readable style, making Jonas Salk: Microbiologist an easy text both for the heretofore disinterested student-on-biography-assignment and the mature reader who wants another look at a life in a time not quite forgotten. This is a buy and keep book. Highly recommended.

                          Book Description

A sumptuous new edition of the great American novel.

"All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn," Ernest Hemingway once declared. First published in 1885, the book has delighted millions of readers, while simultaneously riling contemporary sensibilities, and is still banned in many schools and libraries. Now, Michael Patrick Hearn, author of the best-selling The Annotated Wizard of Oz, thoroughly reexamines the 116-year heritage of that archetypal American boy, Huck Finn, and follows his adventures along every bend of the mighty Mississippi River. Hearn's copious annotations draw on primary sources including the original manuscript, Twain's revisions and letters, and period accounts. Reproducing the original E. W. Kemble illustrations from the first edition, as well as countless archival photographs and drawings, some of them previously unpublished, The Annotated Huckleberry Finn is a book no family's library can do without; it may well prove to be the classic edition of the great American novel. 274 illustrations, two-color throughout.

No repeats of the due praise by previous reviewers. If you have never read Huck Finn before, do not start here, the annotations would make it difficult to read with a curious eye to the margin notes breaking up the flow, like watching a DVD movie with the director comments turned on. But do come back when your done a non-annotated version (or even audio); travel down the river again with the annotations by your side, here as lengthy as the book over again, a whole new magical worlds awaits in the margins; you will discover the hidden depths and meanings of one of the most important literary works about America ever written. An amazing book lovingly produced.

Mark Twain opined that a classic is a book everyone wants to own but nobody reads!
However if you want to read Twain's best book with a full
critical apparatus, an introduction over 100 pages and excellent
illustrations this is the volume for you!
Anyone teaching Huckleberry Finn in high school or college should make use of Michael Patrick Hearn's well researched notes
which make this volume required reading.
I have read all of the Norton Annotated Classics and found this one (along with the Sherlock Holmes volume) the best.
Huckleberry Finn deals with the tragedy of 19th century slavery as Finn helps the black slave Jim escape down the mighty Mississippi river. In Huck's odyssey down the river he also travels from boyhood to manhood.
Twain's use of dialects is amazing as is his dissection of prebellum southern/southwest society rife with violence, bigotry, child abuse and cruelty.
Norton is to be commended for their series of classics opening up new ground for all students of Mark Twain. Excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful insight into an American classic.......2002-03-28

I purchased this book for my son, a high school student who was assigned HUCKLEBERRY FINN in an American Studies class, and promptly fell in love with it. The commentary is delightful, and the many illustrations (many taken from the original edition,) photographs, prints, cartoons, and maps give a real sense of time and place. Homey details that might not be familiar to the modern reader are explained in some detail, as are customs of the time. The author includes material from Twain's notes and details about his life, always in a manner that illuminates the passage.

HUCKLEBERRY FINN frequently turns up on lists of banned books, and it's interesting to read of the controversy that dogged this story from the beginning. The particulars of readers' outraged sensibilities might change, but the response this book has always engendered suggests the timelessness of Twain's targets: ignorance, cruelty, hypocracy, racism. The story is a clear-eyed yet subversive look at a society in transition, and a relentless skewering of treasured myths concerning childhood. These themes remain as troubling today as they were in the 1840s, the supposed setting of the novel.

This book is an excellent resource for students and teachers, as well as for those of us who love Mark Twain's stories. The book itself is beautiful, with high quality paper and binding. A worthy addition to every library!

Mark Twain at his best...great pictures and annotation...that are first rate. Due to time restraints, I have only skimmed the book. What I have read is great. It is a Norton book...always-great editions. If weight means anything, then this is a heavy-duty book. I look forward to reading the entire book after graduation in the spring. In addition, it even looks good on the shelf....

5 out of 5 stars "When I couldn't stand it no longer, I lit out.".......2001-12-05

The greatest American novel, still. The country it sees is still in front of our eyes. The Americans it shows, we still are, though we live nearer to highways now than rivers. Twain's tale can be read both intellectually (yuck) as symbolic of the American quest for masterlessness (see Studies in Classic American Literature by D.H. Lawrence) and as a kid-on-a-raft-let's-see-what-happens story. Art and fun. Not an easy achievement to tie those two rascals together with one rope. Master of structure and flinger of fun though he be, the most exciting reason to read Twain is the language. The book is a hundred and sixteen years old, the writing ain't --"Steamboat captains is always rich, and get sixty dollars a month, and they don't care a cent what a thing costs, you know, long as they want it. Stick a candle in your pocket; I can't rest, Jim, till we give her a rummaging. Do you reckon Tom Sawyer would ever go by this thing? Not for pie, he wouldn't. He'd call it an adventure-that's what he'd call it; and he'd land on that wreck if it was his last act. And wouldn't he throw style into it?" --One caveat: Be careful the illustrations don't mess up the pictures the author can put in your head with his sentences.
