The long road and the book that took me ALL THE WAY.......2004-04-20

This book gets back to the basics that we forget along the way and inspired me to re-evaluate MY worth. Page by page I found myself saying "I know that, I knew that" and then saying "well, why the heck haven't I used these skills?!". Not to mention that the book made me take a long, hard look into the person I am, what I had brought to my organization, what I needed to be happy, and the steps that I had to take if I was going to earn MY WORTH....

6 Months later, withstanding internal executive and managerial changes, I was negotiating directly with the CEO of my company. I demonstrated my VALUE and came out of the negotiation earning what I am WORTH...a promotion and 35% increase in salary!

THIS BOOKED HELD MY HAND THRU NEGOTIATIONS.......2004-02-25

I always had a total fear of negotiating, asking questions, asking for more. I didn't really use the beginning of this book because I felt that I am just going to be me in an interview, and if someone does not like me, then, I wouldn't want to work there anyway. But after receiving 2 offers from 2 different companies, I did read the last two chapters of this book, which talks about how to decide if you want to accept the offer and how to negotiate for more. THESE TWO CHAPTERS WERE AMAZING. I literally read these chapters over and over, highlighting and making notes. I would read a section again for motivation right before picking up the phone to negotiate. The important thing is that, I had a FEAR of negotiating, of being direct, saying I have problems with this or that, asking for more, etc. And by reading this book, not only did i get over my fear, not only did I continuously make these types of phone calls and have these types of conversations, but I actually negotiated for a better salary! And, I actually had another company really respecting my negotiating savvy which is why they pursued me for days, even after I had already said that I was declining their offer.
Another important thing I should note, is I am NOT some senior executive. I am literally 2 months out of college and I did not major in business either! People were amazed that I was even negotiating at all and seemed to know so much about the whole offer/negotiation process, being that I think people in my situation and my age, do not normally even attempt to negotiate for these right out of college positions.

Not only did this book get me more money, get me the confidence boost of having two companies pursue me, but more importantly it got me over my fear of doing this kind of thing.

And now I'm a negotiating machine! An extra $200/month increase in my rent? $3 for this sack of oranges? $400 for this leather jacket? I don't think so...

Bates' book gives sound advice in an easy to read style. It speaks clearly to today's job seeker. Her broad experience supports her recommendations and provides wonderful anecdotes. I found the resume writing information exceptional. This will be a classic career guidance resource for years to come.

As a psychotherapist in Boston, I see lots of people come in for counseling who'd be better served by talking to a job coach. Workplace issues are, not surprisingly these days, all too common. And all too often, the problem comes down to an inability on the part of the patient to recognize -- and expect compensation for -- their contribution in the office. Over the past 75 years, water quality models have evolved as critical tools in determining rational and cost-effective solutions to water quality problems. However, despite all the progress, the correct calculation of sediment fluxes remained the one "missing link" in the water quality modeling paradigm.

Di Toro's book is a tour de force that lays out an elegant framework to forge this link and set it on a firm scientific foundation. As such, it should be in the library of every individual and institution involved in water quality modeling and management. Because of the cutting edge nature of his scholarship, the book should also be of great interest to researchers and graduate students.

Sediment Flux Modeling provides a comprehensive treatment of the science and mathematics underlying the impact of sediment processes on the quality of natural waters. A True Prophet of God.......2006-11-23

I was truly amazed at the spiritual insight that Tozer displayed in his writing. I don't think he suffered fools gladly but his vision of an extremely erroneous present day church was absolutely profound. He is a Christian author who certainly made me stand back in awe at the man's God given insight into how heretical the present church of our Lord Jesus Christ has apostasised from that which was established in the book of Acts. Thank God for men like Tozer who can shock us out of our Evangelical stupor but not submerge us into the present heresy in the Charismatic/Pentecostal hype and nonsense. I would thoroughly recommend this book for anyone who is emerging from that stupor into the light and truth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

A call to Awake and be watchful.......2006-04-12

Scripture teach us that as Christian we should be awake, watchful and praying att all times. How truth was our Lord when He described the condition of His Church at the end of times, a sleeping church, as sleeping virgins without oil on their lamps. This book is a call for the evangelical world, a cry to get back to the God of scripture, the Holy Spirit, not only textualism, but back to a Holy inspired word, the one who jumps to your kind everytime you read it. So many doctrine of demons have infiltrated the Church because of a sleeping body, so many pharisees, back to the law away from grace. Each line in this book gives conviction, scriptural conviction. We need more Tozers today!

Keys to the Deeper Life.......2006-02-18

W Tozer, without exception is one of the finest bible expositors of the early 1900's. He saw what many earnest christians of every generation saw, that is that most christians fail to experience God in the fullest sense. Like many of the classic writers of his day, he endeavors to lead the christian into a deeper relationship with God. This book is one of his finest.
Salvation is a free gift, but if one wants to walk with God, it will cost them much more than most are willing to give up. This book helps one find there place in that walk.

The high, clear call of the Spirit in a deadly quiet world........2003-01-26

"I believe we are under positive spiritual obligation to pray effectively till the present veil is torn away and the face of God is seen again by believing men," Tozer writes.

There is an irony that A.W. Tozer is more prolific and widely-read today than when he was alive. How I wish I could sit at his elbow and ask him about today's events, the future of the church, the coming King...In some ways, he answers those questions in "Keys to the Deeper Life."

Smith Wigglesworth once referred to the gifts of salvation, baptism of the Holy Spirit, and the deeper life as "Good, better, best." I think Tozer would agree.

Never afraid to speak truth, the first chapter sets the tone for the enitre book: "Leaning into the wind". Just like him. Eschewing the hypocritical, the false glory found in man's praise, and the shallow life, Tozer puts the trumpet to his lips to issue a clear call of the Spirit, to engage God at a deeper level. He urges believers to "1.)surrender, 2.)ask, 3.) obey, and 4.)believe in order to recieve the fullness of God, the Holy Spirit.

In the chapter, "Touching Heaven in Prayer", Tozer writes:
"What then shall we do?
We must deny self, take up the cross and count ourselves expendable.
We must cease to exercise the world's judgements and try to think God's thoughts after Him.
We must rekon ourselves dead to gain and glory and allow ourselves to become inextricably invloved with the cross of Christ and the high honor of God."

Putting God first and ourselves dead last.
What a concept.
Sounds like Christ.

Tozer: A Man of God.......2001-09-29

Although A. W. Tozer died during the 1960's, his books are as powerful as ever. He is the man of the hour. In this particular book he gave several major keys to the deeper life, and described what it really means to be spiritually dead. This book is worth reading!

In her book, The Catholic Challenge, Therese Cirner clearly and concisely lays out six "keys" to a deeper spiritual life. Cirner acknowledges the wisdom of the spiritual masters who have lent classic wisdom to the topic of living a holy life, but offers this book for those looking to "bridge" their own spiritual journeys to such classical writers as St. John of the Cross or Teresa of Avila.

Cirner's six keys, prayer, Scripture and spiritual reading, the sacraments, community, virtue and forgiveness, are each laid out in a chapter concluding with reflection questions and an inspirational prayer. The book could be used as a small prayer group resource, or would be excellent for individual contemplation and reflection. Additional literary references are recommended for each of the Keys, offering the reader a treasure trove of resources for the challenge of growing a deeper spiritual life.

"Creative Silence" contains about 140 pages and 12 chapters that encourage the reader to seek a deeper relationship with God through quiet contemplation instead of busy activity.

Indeed, the author states that God is much easier found when we humble ourselves in silence before Him instead of a frenzy of activity and hurried prayer. The struggle is with our flesh - we want to always be doing something instead of slowing down and taking time to listen to God.

My favorite chapter was the one entitled "A Slow and Certain Light" where the author lists the barriers we either encounter or have to deal with that keep us from hearing God.

The last chapter, "Out of the Darkness", lists such Bible verses as: Psalm 46:10, John 15:16, Matthew 14:27, Isaiah 41:18, and Romans 6:4 and elaborates on how those verses can aid us in hearing God's voice.

A good book to read to encourage you to slow down and spend time with the God who dearly loves us through His Son Jesus Christ.

Recommended.
