Riddled with Errors and Typos.......2005-03-24

As an accounting intructor at a technical college, I adopted this text after successful use of a previous edition. However,in my opinion, this textbook is horrible! Riddled w/ errors, typos, and omissions, SW/Thomson Learning should be embarrassed to claim it as its own. What happened to their editors? Use something else when possible!

Wish I'd gotten the updated version.......2007-08-07

As much as I wanted to like this diet, it just did not work for me. She recommended eating 2400 calories for my body type/weight and I knew that would never help me lose weight. The biggest thing this book helped with was knowing that it's really important for me to make the most of every calorie while breastfeeding, for my OWN health. Diet info is changing constantly, and I felt like Behan recommended way too many starches and way too little protein, especially for a mom who's getting back into strength training. I don't know what her 2007 version of this book suggests, but I'm sure it's more updated in this regard. I've read over and over on the internet that a breastfeeding mother should eat at least 1800 calories, so I've been sticking with around 1800-1950 using some of Behan's suggestions (and also using Bob Green's Best Life Diet), and have immediately seen weight loss and have no problems with milk supply.

I really enjoyed this book. I found that it was really easy to read and it didn't take long to read the entire book. I really didn't want to "diet" while breastfeeding but was wanting information on how I should eat while breastfeeding. I found that when I started eating better by following the book's suggestions and began excercising regularly, I started losing half a pound a week. I am now proud to say that I weigh less than I did before I got pregnant and am still nursing my 7 month old daughter.

This book was such a disappointment to me! The majority of her information is completely inaccurate. I would have expected a little more coming from a dietician. The only thing I can say about this book on a positive note, is a few of the recipes are okay and she supports breastfeeding. I felt like this book was/is right with our culture...focused on how mom looks after having a baby. New mom's have enough on their plate worrying about how to adjust to this little person who's taken over their life. They don't need another book emphasizing how their body should look or perform. Every mom is different, I know. I just think mothers should be focused on breastfeeding successfully and loving their sweet baby, not trying to fit into prepregnancy pants 2 weeks postpartum. A lot has changed in 14 years and new mom's need to realize that as well...this book is 14 years old. Good luck.

Excellent Read!!.......2006-05-29

This book was the best. There is so much useful information inside that is easy to understand and written in such a way it reads guickly and you don't have to dwell over each page to grasp it. It had the information I couldn't find other places about the nutrients you need while breastfeeding and how to know that you can eat healthy and lose the weight without having to worry about depriving your child or yourself of the wonderful bond of breastfeeding.

Advanced, interesting, not always easy to follow..........2007-10-02

Oliver Heaviside of operation calculus (i.e. Laplace transform) fame once said "Even Cambridge mathematicians deserve justice." However, the author of this Cambridge Press book is actually from Oxford, and so I did not bump up my rating of 3 stars. However, this may also be unjust. There are many very interesting examples from a wide range of subject areas, but unless you are studying that subject area, I think it will be hard for most to follow along. I would absolutely rate this book 5 stars if there was a substantial "hints" section in the back or a little more exposition in the text that would enable those with a less broad background to follow along more easily. When the author says in the preface he assumes you have a background in vector calculus, partial differential equations, fluid mechanics, linear algebra, etc., pay attention, he means it. The book is good for advanced students who want to get a taste of areas often not covered in undergraduate engineering coursework (e.g. Charpit's method for solving first order nonlinear PDEs, Buckingham-Pi theorem of dimensional analysis, "generalized" functions, asymptotics, perturbation theory, etc.). I think the order of presentation is questionable at times. As one example, in problem 2 of section 2.5, after giving the formula for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor, the author asks us to estimate the electrical capacitance of an elephant. I like this as an unusual example, but I am not sure how the parallel plate capacitor formula helps. After another paragraph about how much charge a human body can store (still part of problem 2.5), he gives an outline of the derivation of a capacitance of an isolated sphere, which I know can be used to give an upper bound for both the above examples, but the author never points this out, leaving it just hanging there, before continuing on with an RC circuit example (while still in problem 2.5!!). Because the spherical capacitance formula comes well after the elephant question, and looks like it is leading into the next part of the question (which rambles on endlessly) I am torn between applauding the author for including an interesting example that makes one think about how to calculate a useful estimate when the elephant shape is too complex to handle exactly and complaining that he can give a few more hints so that someone not that familiar with electrostatics can follow the problem more easily.

Perec's work reminds me of a potted plant on a windowsill of an old apartment, a free-growing natural form set in an urban environment. It's like seeing that one tree outside your apartment window, the one that reminds you that not everything has to hold to the grid. His style reminds me somewhat of Glenn Gould's interpretations of Bach.

The best two pieces are a review of an old 19th century travel guide to London and an interview where Perec describes his experience serving as a paratrooper during France's Gaullist period.

As the author of the world's longest palindrome and other literary feats, Perec's phenomenal linguistic skills and imagination remain incomparable. His works, however, on not merely experiments within the constraints of language; I am not as impressed with his ability to write a 300-page novel without a single letter "e" as much as his endearing sense of humor and humanity. "Species of Spaces" stands as a critical piece of his oeuvre in that it serves as a primer of sorts for his other major works, like a meta-text or map of his other works. Beyond this function, though, lies a vision of what literature can be, beyond genre. Perec explores the spaces we inhabit, beginning with the most evident, the page itself on which he writes (and you read), and "zooming out" into ever grander scales: the apartment, the street, the city, the country, and the universe itself. He does not cease to inscribe himself in each of these spaces, for the crisis that drives this book is that Perec does not exist except in language, on the page, in the apartment, in the street, etc. Every act of writing is an existential re-affirmation, made poignant by the author's circumstances (Perec was the son of Holocaust victims). The darkness of his own history is mitigated, however, by these attempts to capture the here-and-now in writing.

This is a perfect book for the writer seeking inspiration, since the way Perec does not use language as a clunky tool but rather plays with it, tests its limits. Literature seems then not a struggle for self-expression but an exercise in creativity. Perec's approach is refreshing, original, and terribly underappreciated.

All hail the Wondering Boy Poet.......1998-09-15

A welcome addition to the under-translated oeuvre of an incomparable writer. Species of Spaces is a collection of essays, fictions, and verbal bagatelles showcasing a Parisian who "never wanted to write the same thing twice." Perec fuses quotidian concerns with psychological imperatives, and takes you to places you've never been before. Perec's work is the infra and ultra of literature's spectral continuum. And he's gut-busting funny, too.

As a result, few studies relating to bank failure have paid much attention to the regulatory framework for failing banks and the conduct of formal bank insolvency proceedings. However, in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis, more attention has been focused on issues of bank insolvency. Structural reforms in the banking sector of various Asian countries, in particular the implementation of effective exit rules to expel insolvent and non-viable banks from the market, have been considered of primary importance to restoring confidence in the troubled banking sector. In addition, the ability of governments within the European Union to rescue insolvent banks has been significantly limited by strict rules on competition, suggesting that failing banks will become increasingly subject to insolvency proceedings. The Legal Aspects of Bank Insolvency compares the legal framework for dealing with insolvent banks in Western Europe, the United States and Canada, identifying the distinctive features of each regime and discussing the main issues and choices in dealing with failing banks.
