Leader's Guide To Transform An Enterprise For Learning .......2005-03-28
Purington & Butler do an outstanding job of providing a systematic approach to managing positive change in training & development. The book is full of very specific & useful recommendations to upgrade an organization's culture cost effectively and gain competitive advantage in its ability to learn quickly. It shares many examples of what worked well along with a few examples of flexibility with plans that needed to be changed. The only negative to the book ... and it is only a minor negative is that it sometimes repeated some of the examples. If you are in a training department, are in a position to influence or approve a training department's strategies or are selling & marketing to the training & development market ... this is a must read!!
The next "bible" for Training Professionals.......2003-05-01
Purington and Butler have succeeded by detailing how to implement the strategy they so clearly recommend in the book. The book sets forth in an orderly and easily understood manner the steps that will greatly improve any training department. If there is any one book that will pull it all together for the training professional, this is the one. A must read book.

Well-Balanced, World View.......2001-06-10
As I start to explore diffrent modalities of healing, this book is a wealth of cross-cultural information about the roots and practices of health and wellness. There is sufficient depth to get you started and links to places with more information.
Though organized as an encyclopedia I enjoyed reading it cover to cover as a kind of medical anthroplogy 101 class. The writing is very accessible and thr presentation is balanced.
Yesterday I went to a Health and Harmony Fair (a new-age country faire.) This book served as a very good glossary and guide to the many labels, banners and claims.

Product Description
It is well known, that the Sun as central star of our solar system gravitationally controls the orbits of planets and minor bodies. Much less known is the domain of plasma, fields and charged particles, however, in which the Sun with a radius of less than 0.7 Million km governs the heliosphere out to about 15 Billion km, an area about 2000 times bigger in radius or nearly 10
10 times bigger in volume. What forces activates the Sun to maintain this power? Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and their descendants are the troops serving the Sun during high solar activity periods.
This volume offers a comprehensive and integrated overview of our present knowledge and understanding of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and their descendants, Interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs). It results from a series of workshops held between 2000 and 2004. An international team of about sixty experimenters involved e.g. in the SOHO, ULYSSES, VOYAGER, PIONEER, HELIOS, WIND, IMP, and ACE missions, ground observers, and theoreticians worked jointly on interpreting the observations and developing new models for CME initiations, development, and interplanetary propagation.
The book is intended to provide scientists active in space physics research a with an up-to-date status of the current understanding of CMEs and ICMEs and their effects in the heliosphere, and also to serve the advanced graduate student with introductory material on this active field of research.
Book Description
Solar science has evolved rapidly over the past ten years as the results of a new generation of solar space missions have become available. This book provides a thorough introduction to the subject of solar physics, based on those spacecraft observations. The author introduces the solar corona, which has a temperature of several million degrees, and sets it in the context of basic plasma physics before moving on to discuss plasma instabilities and plasma heating processes. The latest results on coronal heating and radiation, which are fundamental processes in all stars, are presented. Spectacular phenomena such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections are described in detail, together with their potential effects on the Earth. The author draws together observations made at many wavelengths from hard X-rays, soft X-rays, extreme UV and radio wavelengths. This paperback study edition of Markus Aschwanden’s highly acclaimed Physics of the Solar Corona will include 50 pages of problems and solutions which will much enhance the value of the book to students.

Book Description
Expanding upon the ideas first proposed in his seminal book Cosmical Magnetic Fields, Eugene N. Parker here offers the first in-depth treatment of the magnetohydrodynamic theory of spontaneous magnetic discontinuities. In detailing his theory of the spontaneous formation of tangential discontinuities (current sheets) in a magnetic field embedded in highly conducting plasma, Parker shows how it can be used to explain the activity of the external magnetic fields of planets, stars, interstellar gas clouds, and galaxies, as well as the magnetic fields in laboratory plasmas. Provocative and fascinating, Spontaneous Current Sheets in Magnetic Fields presents a bold new theory that will excite interest and discussion throughout the space physics community.

Book Description
This thoroughly revised textbook is a basic introduction to plasma phenomena in solar and stellar coronae emphasizing non-MHD aspects. The natural way in which the author unifies observations and theory gives a wide perspective to the subject. An important feature is the lucidly written presentation of the fundamentals of plasma physics. The basic theory thus developed is then extended to some exemplary and important observations of coronal dynamics, such as coronal currents, particle acceleration, propagation of particle beams, and shocks.
The book has grown from teaching introductory courses on plasma astrophysics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). It addresses advanced undergraduates and first-year graduate students without a background in plasma physics. It will also be of interest to more senior research workers involved in coronal physics of the Sun and other stars, solar/stellar winds, and various other fields of plasma astrophysics.

Book Description
Most newcomers to the field of linear stochastic estimation go through a difficult process in understanding and applying the theory. This book minimizes the process while introducing the fundamentals of optimal estimation. Optimal Estimation of Dynamic Systems explores topics that are important in the field of control where the signals received are used to determine highly sensitive processes such as the flight path of a plane, the orbit of a space vehicle, or the control of a machine. The authors use dynamic models from mechanical and aerospace engineering to provide immediate results of estimation concepts with a minimal reliance on mathematical skills. The book documents the development of the central concepts and methods of optimal estimation theory in a manner accessible to engineering students, applied mathematicians, and practicing engineers. It includes rigorous theoretial derivations and a significant amount of qualitiative discussion and judgements. It also presents prototype algorithms, giving detail and discussion to stimulate development of efficient computer programs and intelligent use of them. This book illustrates the application of optimal estimation methods to problems with varying degrees of analytical and numercial difficulty. It compares various approaches to help develop a feel for the absolute and relative utility of different methods, and provides many applications in the fields of aerospace, mechanical, and electrical engineering.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding inclusive text on estimation theory!.......2004-06-03
It presents the fundamentals of state estimation theory and the tools for the design of state-of-the-art algorithms for navigation and tracking, vehicle attitude determination. There is a lot of material that is covered by this book. The examples are well presented and they really help you when working on the problems at the end of each chapter. Also, computer routines for all the examples shown in the text can be accessed. I have to say that this is an excellent book for estimation of dynamic systems.

Good Work by a Great Author.......2007-08-25
In HUMBOLDT'S GIFT (1975), Bellow starts with the character Von Humboldt Fleisher, who is a rich and contradictory personality. He's brilliant about high culture but fascinated and informed about low culture; he's benevolent and caring but also a bully; he is committed to high-minded pursuits but also wants money and success; he's impractical yet also shrewd and litigious; he feels qualified to advise the President but ends in a flophouse. For about 200 pages, Humboldt is like a great glitter ball rotating above a dance floor, with each flash of Bellow's light creating a character that has elements of Humboldt's immense personality. He's the big tent. All other characters are inside.
But then, we're in Chicago, more than a decade after Humboldt's death, and in the life of Charlie Citrine, the narrator of this book and Humboldt's buddy. For this time and place, Bellow once again creates characters that are reflections of elements in Humboldt's personality. But these are not just canny explorations of Humboldt's contradictory needs and values. Instead, the characters tend to be extreme parodies of elements in Humboldt and explode the book's character-based structure. While they make sense in Charlie's out-of-control life, the personalities and shenanigans of the characters Cantabile, Thaxter, and Renata are grotesque or hurtful variations of forces within Humboldt and mismatched with the start of the book. It's Humboldt-gone-wild. As a result, the final 280 pages of HUMBOLDT'S GIFT reads like Bellow has no structure. While a lot happens, this part of the book seems undisciplined and sometimes arbitrary and very very long.
There are, by the way, many similarities between HUMBOLDT'S GIFT and the great HERZOG (1964). In each there is a brilliant and successful male protagonist, a crazy ex-wife, interaction with cops that involves a gun, and so on. Each book even has a character with a limp. Just speculating here: but surely Bellow was aware of these similarities. So in HUMBOLDT'S GIFT, maybe he decided to explode already strong character into grotesque parody. This is the opposite of HERZOG, where continuums of character narrow to sanity.
HUMBOLDT'S GIFT is a long but worthwhile journey. It helps to show why Bellow is a great author.
Glory Time.......2007-07-21
This is my favorite of a very rich, thrilling body of work. The story of Delmore Schwartz has been told well by biographer James Atlas, but this literary treatment has the drama and humor of a Shakespearean history. Here, as elsewhere, Bellow mixes gangster antics with philosophy, with scenes that make one cry with laughter. There is the gorgeous Mercedes pummeled by the baseball bat swinging, maddened Chicago punk. There is the weirder than ever meeting held in a wash room behind the swinging doors of a toilet booth. There are, as ever, the demanding, beautiful women, but here there is Humboldt, the manic genius who gossips about T. S. Eliot, and dies one day while taking his garbage out of a flea-bag hotel. Bellow plays himself as Charlie Citrine, the guilt-ridden former friend of Humboldt/Schwartz, who agonizes over his own success and his brilliant friend's failure. New York intellectuals in the American laugh machine, Tolstoy in Disneyland: it's Bellow's subject. How does the serious man make a life in America?
Like a person from a painting.......2007-07-19
Saul Bellow's model for Von Humboldt Fleisher is Delmore Schwartz. The Bellow stand-in, the narrator, is Charlie Citrine. Humboldt was inspired, shrewd, nutty. The book registers the past, using flashbacks to show the life and times of Humboldt as observed by C. Citrine, and the present, detailing Citrine's encounters with the mobster-like figure, Rinaldo Cantabile. It seems that Cantabile's wife is doing a thesis on Von Humboldt Fleisher.
Citrine describes Stendahl, Kierkegaard, and Baudelaire as experts on boredom. When Citrine tried to get his play into suitable shape to run on Broadway, his debut was interrupted by Humboldt telephoning the theater from Bellevue. Humboldt collected psychoanalysts and lawyers. He had no old friends, only ex-friends. Leonard Lyons wrote of Charlie Citrine, but Humboldt was famous at the White Horse Tavern. Citrine was developing the notion for his projected journal, THE ARK, that the French were especially sensitive to boredom. The Rinaldo Cantabiles of Chicago and elsewhere gave Citrine the opportunity to experience a Runyonesque life.
Another of the novel's characters, Thaxter, the supposed editor of the never-to-be-issued journal, THE ARK, possesses the attributes of the fathers of Geoffrey Wolfe and John LeCarre. Citrine's friend Renata claims that Charlie is self-absorbed but doesn't know the first thing about selfishness. Melville and Poe were solitary geniuses. The truth is is that there is no literary life.
Dying, Humboldt had left Kathleen, his former wife, and Charlie Citrine with copies of an outline for a movie. On the other hand, a movie script Humboldt and Charlie had completed years earlier has turned into a hit, giving Charlie another avenue to riches.
Humboldt had always contended that Charlie's hit play had been based upon his portrait. Thus, Humboldt is given reburial and his old uncle receives a substantial share of the payments. The focal point of the book, the madness and accomplishments of Von Humboldt Fleisher, is surrounded amusingly by the filigree of Charlie's domestic and foreign entanglements.
Dead poet anxiety........2007-07-12
The year after he published Humboldt's Gift (1975), Saul Bellow (1915-2005) won both the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1976. His friendship with the American poet Delmore Schwartz was Bellow's inspiration for the novel (which was first intended to be a short story). Like Schwartz (1913-1966), Bellow's title character, Von Humboldt Fleisher, was a brilliant though self-destructive poet, whose later life became a downward spiral into alcoholism and insanity. Despite their failures, both poets aspired to raise American values through art. By contrast, Bellow's protagonist, Charlie Citrine (possibly a version of Bellow), is a wealthy, best-selling author who has no desire to transcend mid-century American culture through his work. Middle-aged, divorced, bored, and struggling financially, Citrine is haunted by the past, obsessed with Humboldt's death, and fearful that his own life will end in failure. "How sad," he says, "about all this human nonsense which keeps us from the large truth." But it is the "human nonsense" that seems to intoxicate Citrine in the restaurants, sweat baths, courtrooms, and bedrooms of Chicago. While he struggles to find meaning in his life, a minor character, Rinaldo Cantabile--a small-time gangster, encourages Citrine to use his art for profit. Deeply moving, Humboldt's Gift is characteristic Bellow, equally rich in existential angst and humor.

My Favorite Bellow Novel.......2006-05-21
This is my favorite Saul Bellow novel of the several I have read. It is based on the life of the amazing poet Delmore Schwartz, and chronicles the deterioration and fall of a man of genius. Bellow obviously loved Delmore, and the protagonist in this work is viewed sympathetically, but with candor. Bellow was at the height of his powers when he wrote this fine novel. I recommend it highly for its fascinating plot, great character development, and style of prose.
