Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable and encouraging - very worth reading........2006-10-29
I was looking for a book on team building for my department and found this book on accident as I took others off the shelf at the local library. I checked out five books that day and read them all - but this is the only one I renewed. I am on Amazon right now to purchase a copy of it to keep on MY shelf permanently.
Whether a manager, a supervisor or just a co-worker, we are often presented with performance problems in the work place. How to handle them in a way that will bring about change and not degrade morale of the group or the individual?? To me, that is what this book speaks to.
What can we do attain the performance we seek from our team?? We can coach, we can mentor, we can counsel. Which to do when and how? That is what this book presents in a very human and compassionate style. And when performance problems are the topic, we often let frustration, anger and exasperation rule the moment instead of what might FIX the issue - a coach, a mentor or a counselor.
This book will help you approach the team buidling aspect of work with a better attitude and some new ideas.
Redundant, trivial compilation of lists, opinions and generalizations.......2005-07-12
It looked interesting when I saw it on the shelf, but unfortunately you cannot judge a book by its cover. Coaching, mentoring... is disapointing work which neither gives a "how to" set of instructions or provides interesting theoretical reflections on coaching. Mostly it is a book of trivial lists (the 10 values of a successful coach) and vacuous statements ("no coach has ever had the perfect team"; "support is tied to synergy"). And, you will search in vain for any empirical evidence that any of the authors assertions are true. Should have left this one on the shelf.

Customer Reviews:
One of the top two or three business books of the year........1998-06-01
This is for me, the definitive resource for anyone looking for clear and concise explanations on the new role for management.
Book Description
Stop Managing, Start Coaching! highlights the critical skill of performance coaching-demonstrating how managers can balance the roles of trainer, mentor, career coach, and confronter to improve productivity in the workplace. This pioneering guide shows how to: develop a practical and cost-effective human resource strategy and evaluate its effects on performance improvement; reinforce positive work traits through reward strategies; master and practice the art of employee ``self-esteeming''--the next step beyond employee empowerment.

Not Quite on the Mark.......2001-07-10
"Stop Managing, Start Coaching" has some very helpful insights, for example about giving feedback. On the other hand, I felt the authors could have more effectively expressed themselves in terms how coaching and management differ. While the authors suggest that coaching demonstrates more genuine interest and respect for people, they continually identify results of coaching solely in management terms-for example, increased job performance.
I think the authors would have better demonstrated the value of coaching (vs. managing) if they had emphasized that coaching balances the interests of both the coached employee and the employers. Where effective coaching increases the potential, self-actualization, and self esteem of coached people, enhanced performance is one of several by-products of people with increased potential and healthier self esteem. Rather the authors suggest, "Performance coaching is a series of one-on-one exchanges between you and your people. The purpose of each exchange is to help you solve problems, improve performance, or get results." This seems to sound quite similar to traditional command and control management-especially in terms of expressing little of "what's in it for me?" from employee' perspectives.
I think the authors' good ideas would be more evident if presented in a context giving credit to other positive initiatives toward human development. Instead, the authors dismiss the value of research, personality instruments, and leadership profiles and also the value of human resource development efforts. The authors may over generalize management malpractice. While there are many examples of "management malpractice," there are also many conscientious managers trying to do their best for both their companies and their employees. It seems we should be learning from the passion of these conscientious managers and working toward nurturing similar passion in our employees-instead of dismissing these conscientious managers and generalizing them as malpracticing.
While "Stop Managing, Start Coaching" expresses some valuable ideas, I think these effective ideas may be overshadowed lack of respect for and integration into other human development paradigms.
Useful AND challenging framework.......2000-04-10
This book is a useful and challenging framework for how to move from managing to coaching. It starts with an overview of "Contributions to Managerial Malpractice", including skills, attitudes and behaviors. Then they move on to explain the concept they call "Performance Coaching". They review the "Eight Elements of the Performance Coaching Process": 1. Developing a new human resource development philosophy. 2. Modularizing training. 3. Creating transfer of learning strategies.
4. Using human resource development professionals as internal consultants responsible for performance management systems. 5. Enhancing employee relations and creating an ownership attitude. 6. Using managers as performance coaches to do training. 7. Creating self-esteeming employees and teams. 8. Identifying reward strategies that motivate employees, improve their commitment, and get results. They use the "Four Phases of Performance Coaching" as a useful framework. 1. Developing a synergistic relationship with employees 2. Using the four roles of performance coaching 3. Developing self-directed and self-esteeming employees 4. Selecting rewards that build commitment and get results.
I believe the framework is useful, but the implementation will still be a challenge. The nuts and bolts "how-to" is left for the reader to figure out.

Book Description
Provides systematic coverage of the mathematical theory of modelling epidemics in populations, with a clear and coherent discussion of the issues, concepts and phenomena. Mathematical modelling of epidemics is a vast and important area of study and this book helps the reader to translate, model, analyse and interpret, with numerous applications, examples and exercises to aid understanding.
Customer Reviews:
Great, but not as an intro to Infectious Disease Modeling.......2006-09-26
I purchased this book partially because one review proposed that this text would serve as a good, teach-yourself introduction to mathematical modeling of infectious disease (I.D.). I'm currently in a master's-level class on I.D. modeling which has no specific text requirement, and having only a so-so math background and little knowledge of model construction, I thought a self-teach book would be nice.
Simply said, this book is not for those who stumbled through calculus 1. In fact, unless you're quite well-to-do in the math department, you'll find much of this text either very challenging or impenetrable. The worked-out problems are a very nice touch--one that many authors would do well to note--but the high-level math is too much for this budding epidemiologist.

The "secret book" of the title--or libro segreto, in the old Florentine manner--is the detailed account of Grazia dei Rossi's exciting and turbulent life, written so that her son might know his legacy. Inspired by a letter written centuries ago by a young Jewish woman to Isabella d'Este, The Secret Book of Grazia is a rich and complex work of fiction. This historical novel brings to life the sublime art, political corruption, and religious intolerance of 16th-century Florence from a rarely explored vantage point: the complicated symbiosis between Christian and Jew. Grazia dei Rossi, educated daughter of a wealthy Jewish family, has fallen in love with a young Christian nobleman. Forced to choose between her love and her faith, she chooses love. But her betrothed is whisked away by kinsmen, and the humiliated Grazia is ruined--until fate throws her another chance in the guise of a second marriage proposal, this one from the powerful Judah del Medigo, scholar, physician, and adviser to popes and kings. Under his guardianship, Grazia flourishes as a scholar and scribe, eventually becoming the secretary to Isabella d'Este, where she reenters the world of courts and courtiers.
And that's just the beginning; Park blends scholarship, imagination, and a compelling heroine to serve up good, old-fashioned literary stew, thick with the irresistible details of place, plottings, and passions.
Book Description
The Secret Book of Grazia dei Rossi is a sweeping tale of intrigue and romance set in a time rife with court politics, papal chicanery, religious intolerance, and inviolable social rules. Grazia, private secretary to the world-renowned Isabella d'Este, is the daughter of an eminent Jewish banker, the wife of the pope's Jewish physician, and the lover of a Christian prince. In a "secret book," written as a legacy for her son, she records her struggles to choose between the seductions of the Christian world and a return to the family, traditions, and duties of her Jewish roots. As she re-creates Renaissance Italy in captivating detail, Jacqueline Park gives us a timeless portrait of a brave and brilliant woman trapped in an unforgiving, inflexible society.
Customer Reviews:
A for research, D for characters.......2007-06-19
It's a shame; with a fascinating era and characters with such potential, this should have been excellent. I give the author an A for research and a D for plot and characterization. I rarely put down a book without finishing it, but this was so dry that I finally skipped ahead every few pages to find out what happens and saved myself plenty of boredom. This heroine is billed as the Scarlet O'Hara of the Rennaisance, but I have to say NO. I cared about the characters in GWTW, but not one whit about these people. The author moves them about Italy so often throughout the story, with no apparent reason other than to use the factual historical events that take place at that time. The author apparently couldn't decide whether to hint at the sex or make it utterly graphic, ultimately using both in the most unsatisfying and unappealing way. This book is supposed to be a letter from mother to son, but what mother gives graphic details to her young son of every orifice she and her lover explored all night long? This book could have been one of my favorite books; the author had fascinating material to work with, but she failed us. I've been meaning to buy this book for 10 years; and I'm thankful I merely borrowed it from the library rather than spending money on it.
She had me until the end..........2007-02-13
I'm not going to give anything away, but I was very disappointed about how the book ended -- or didn't. After a great journey, I felt like there was very little resolution. I would have liked a few more chapters.
Intriguing lesson in life, love and the Italian Renascence.......2006-08-14
Grazia Dei Rossi is an amazing woman, celebrated author, court confidant, loving mother, shrewd business woman, spirited lover, and a Jew. She's also fictitious. The world she lived in, and most of her supporting characters, however, are brilliantly drawn and historically accurate. Grazia's story, framed as a secret memoir to her son, brings to life Italy of the 1400 and 1500s.
At 567 pages this is no light read, but if you enjoy historical fiction, Italy, the Renascence, and a good story it is worth the effort. My only suggestion would be the inclusion of an glossary to explain some of the period Italian terminology.
Fantastic detailed work for lovers of historical fiction.......2006-08-02
The Secret Book of Grazia dei Rossi will delight lovers of historical fiction looking for something meaty, involved, and brimming with detail. Park has recreated Renaissance Italy masterfully and provided insight into Jewish culture, history, and persecution during this time period.
This is no quick read. The details, family intrigues, and the complex dynastic and religious history of the time require attention to detail when reading. Those with some knowledge of the time may have an advantage over those who don't, but in all this is a book - written to her son - about a young woman's life and her personal and familial struggles, not Renaissance history (but that is the fascinating back drop!). It is a beautiful story.
A Jewish view of Renaissance life in Italy.......2006-07-03
This fact-studded book is a sheer delight for those of us who love the Italian Renaissance. Famous characters, Savonorola, Columbus, Martin Luther, Charles V, the Este and Medici families, several Popes etc., etc. abound on almost every page, while the ficticious Grazia dei Rossi lives and suffers among them. If you are a true scholar of this period, this book will disappoint as too many of the famous receive only cursory attention. The strenght of this book lies in the depiction of the Jewish community in Italy at that time: its limited legal rights, its uncertaintity of being accepted by the different rulers and the constant fear of losing their livelihood. When visiting Italy in modern times, the role and influence of that community is rarely exhitited. The main character, Grazia, the daughter of a prominent Jewish pawnbroker, is inspired by a real Jewish woman who was urged by Isabella d'Este to convert to Christianity so she could marry her secret lover. The author then used this person to experience the turbulent times with its constant warfare between the city states. The book depicts the establishment of the first ghetto, named after the "campo gheto" in Venice an area where a foundry cooled its slags and where all Venician Jews had to live.
I thought the writing style was perfect for the time depicted. My only regret is that Jacqueline Park did not provide a more detailed bibliography. I know a novel doesn't require any at all, but so many of the events and characters are real, that it would have helped those of us who would like to read more about the Italian Renaissance.
