Book Description
The potential threat posed by Leonid meteroids to orbiting spacecraft over the next several years calls for new dynamic mitigation strategies to assist the satellite community in reducing the danger to its vehicles. This book offers deliberate dynamic mitigation strategies to complement the traditional shielding strategies, providing mission operators additional ways to decrease the danger. Five different attitude control and orbit maneuvering options are examined in detail. The information is presented in algorithmic form to allow technically competent, but meteoroid inexperienced, operators to easily understand the phenomena, assess the danger, and implement procedures. Although general in scope, the book emphasizes the Leonid meteor events of the 1998-2002 timeframe.

Book Description
Provides a review of the most recent advances in the science and technology of controlling odour and wetness. This edition includes two new chapters on antiperspirant and deodorant formulations; two new chapters on relevant patent technologies of recent years; discussions on the chemistry of aluminium/zirconium antiperspirant salts; and a modernized chapter on the structure and function of the human eccrine sweat glands.
Customer Reviews:
Science Journal Worthy of Purchase.......2001-09-05
This journal of articles sums up in one book information that would take years to acquire by any other means. The section on higher efficacy aluminum and aluminum/zirconium salts and of basic aluminum complexes, is worth the purchase price alone. But then Dr.Laden has gone on to include new information about the structure of the human eccrine sweat gland. It is like icing on a cake. With a section on the apocrine sweat gland that reads like a seamless poem of scientific evaluation, and beautiful prose about the microbiology of the axilla and the odors it produces, this book is truly a valuable contribution in this field.

karl laden must sure have some bad b.o........2001-08-11
karl laden must sure have some bad b.o. because this book is real stinker. I have been waiting years for a book on this subject but was very disappointed in what dr laden had to offer. I couldnt get into this book at all. maybe its because i missed the first edition, but I think its because dr laden cant write. it would seem that prior to setting pen to paper on this tome, the longest thing he had written was a check. i find it hard to believe that Dr laden could miss on such a fascinating topic.
On a positive note, kudos to dr laden for a marvellous cover.
This book sure doesnt stink.......2001-08-10
This book will change the public's strongly held perception about books on anti-perspirants and deodorants. To those who would think that a book on anti-perspirants would be pretty dry reading, reading this book will be a revelation. Once I picked up the book and delved into the first chapter about the history of anti-perspirants and deodorants, I couldnt put it down. The only thing that could be added would be a chapter on how to best apply anti-perspirants and deodorants. I know several people who could benefit from reading such a chapter. I certainly hope that we see more books from Dr. Laden in the near future. Perhaps we might see a tome covering toothpastes and toothbrushes (including the electric models).

Book Description
Best-selling author Violet Blue searched the country and found the most stunning and brave sexual nonfiction writing of the year. Best Sex Writing 2005 includes pieces from more than 20 cutting-edge sex writers, including Michelle Tea, Carol Queen, Annalee Newitz, and Patrick Califia.
The author (Ultimate Guide to Fellatio, Ultimate Guide to Cunnlingus, Ultimate Guide to Sexual Fantasy) and erotica editor (Taboo, the Sweet Life series), Violet Blue turns her sights to nonfiction in Best Sex Writing 2005, first in a new series from Cleis Press. With Cleis’s trademark sharp, provocative editing and packaging, Best Sex Writing 2005 is destined to become an annual favorite. Best Sex Writing 2005 offers a swirling, multi-colored microcosm of American sexual practices and attitudes. Whether visiting a New York gay sex club, an L.A. escort agency, a Bronx sex ed. class, or a sex workers’ enclave south of the border, Violet Blue takes readers on a tour they won’t soon forget.
Customer Reviews:
Where the cutting edge of sex writing is.......2006-05-02
This book is hard to categorize, because it covers such a range of styles. I was blown away by the variety of it, and pleased that the writing is of exceedingly high quality throughout. Not every essay is for everyone, but it's overall an excellent book. I especially liked the confessions of a sperm bank teller and the article about sex at a sci-fi convention, and Patrick Califia's piece is as disturbing as it is thought-provoking and heartfelt. Challenging, creative, memorable and sexy writing.
Is this really the best sex writing there is?!.......2006-04-16
Ok, here's my big confession - I do a ton of reading about sex. This collection fell so far below most of what I've read in virtually every department - titilation factor zero, writing styles dull and unremarkable, insights into sex industry/sexual encounters almost nonexistant. The best piece by far is Patrick's Califa's and I would just recommend buying a book written entirely by him if you want to read something provacative & original. (Or something written entirely by Carol Queen, Susie Bright, etc.)This collection would only be appropriate for someone who is looking for a superficial account of some different facets of sex-related businesses, and to me the title "Best" suggests something beyond a sort of sex primer. At the risk of pissing off some of the many Violet Blue fans, bad editing is clearly to blame. By the way, the entirely uninspiring section by "Shirley Shave" (an alleged female porn star) has been subsequently revealed to be a James Freyish stunt. The person behind the pen name, a male fiction writer, came out as fabricating the entire blog from which the writing was taken. I hope that gives you some idea of the quality of this book's content.
Best Sex Writing is an Understatement.......2005-12-11
Often these collections of sexy short stories have maybe one or two decent pieces surrounded by dull, cliched rush-jobs that are about as exciting as cardboard.
Not so with this book. I read the entire book, cover-to-cover, in one sitting as each storie left me panting for more. My favorite story overall is "Dick Check" by Chris Ohnesorge. If you've ever wondered what it could be like working the door to an all-male sex club, "Dick Check" will definitely quench your curiosity. I also loved "Sex with Storm Troopers" by Annalee Newitz which provides some insight into the sexiness of sci-fi conventions and also "Hooker Booker" by K. St. Germaine. I had always wondered about the ins and outs of the call girl business...
Bottom line, buy this book. It's a steal at $10 and will be a staple in your erotica collection.
Looking for porn? Keep going. Looking to learn? Have a read........2005-09-30
I picked up this book after attending a reading by several of the authors. I could tell that this was less about erotica and more about the socialogy of sexuality. If you're looking for dirty stories, you probably won't enjoy this (but there are other books by/edited by Violet Blue that you may like better). But if you want some real insight into subjects ranging from visiting the Kinsey Institute, to working for an escort service as a client-booking agent, to trolling for Stormtroopers at a sci-fi/gaming con, then you need this book. My personal favorite stories were the ones by Carol Queen, Annalee Newitz, Chris Ohnesorge and Paul Festa.
academic interest.......2005-09-30
I found this interesting but only from an academic perspective. While the brain is supposed to be the biggest sex organ I found few of the stories did anything more than stimulate grey matter. Given the reviews and description of this work online, I expected hot and interesting. I sent it back because the copy I had was missing the last page of a story and like many of the other stories, I didn't care to know the end of anyway.
Book Description
Here is the year's best nonfiction writing on sex, for the first time expanded to include contributions from overseas. It includes an interview with Harry Reems of Deep Throat fame, essays on the growth of asexuality, the XXXChurch, “sexperts” and their lack of qualifications, sex in Japan, and alternative sexual practices. Publications featured include Wired, Salon.com, Village Voice, the Spectator, the Guardian (London), the Sunday Times (London), the Erotic Review (London), and more.
The distinguised and varied list of contributors includes: Dave Barry (Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and columnist for the Miami Herald) on sex, men, and fruit flies; Nigel Planer (novelist and actor) on the sexual allure of Tahitian women; Ron Nyswaner (screenwriter on Philadelphia) on his sexual and emotional domination by a male hustler; Toni Bentley (former ballerina) on her obsession with anal sex; Steven Rinella (novelist and journalist) on his discomfort watching a friend’s wife strip; Jeannette Angell (novelist and professor) on her experiences as an escort; Jonathan Margolis (novelist and author of The Intimate History of the Orgasm) on the obsession for orgasm; Sebastian Horsley (controversial British artist who underwent crucifixion as part of his art) on the benefits of no-strings, paid-for sex with prostitutes; and others.
Customer Reviews:
Not TOO hot to handle.......2007-05-17
If you've ever done any public speaking, you know that some of the best advice you can get is to open with a joke. You put both the audience and yourself at ease before diving into the weightier points.
Editor Mitzi Szereto seems to have followed that advice in compiling The World's Best Sex Writing 2005. This non-fiction anthology opens with a humorous article. "The Big Ooooooohh!"--if I have to tell you what it's about, you really need to read it--had me laughing hard enough to warrant a dirty look from the cat whose midnight bath I'd so rudely disrupted.
But then the content turns serious as we delve into "Andrea Dworkin, 1946-2005" and "The Sex Files." Antipornography feminism and the lingering legal ramifications of homosexuality represent a major point shift away from the opening article. Then we move on to political interference in scientific research on sexuality and the advent of female genital "plastic surgery." Weightier points indeed!
Like Szereto's previous editorial offering, Wicked: Sexy Tales of Legendary Lovers (see my review in issue 3.11), this collection has something to suit every taste and runs the gamut from humorous to horrifying.
Other reviewers have--and probably will--include the following proviso, but it bears repeating nonetheless. The World's Best Sex Writing 2005 is not pornography. It's not even erotica, although some of the memoirs test that theory. It is, however, a frank and sometime profane discussion of human sexuality.
Will you be offended at least once by the time you're done reading? No doubt. (I know I had to grit my teeth through some of the articles.) Sex is, after all, a delicate subject with countless variations of perception. What I find amusing, you might find obscene, and vice versa.
However, if you stick it out (so to speak) and read every article, you stand a far better chance of being educated, enlightened, and entertained.
Just don't expect to be coddled. The language used is often graphic. Little is left to the imagination. If you're offended by such things, don't read the book.
In fact, you probably shouldn't be reading this review. Now that I've brought the book to your attention, you might feel compelled to read it, if only for curiosity's sake.
Intriguing commentaries that shed light on our society's sexual hangups.......2005-12-25
Sorry to disappoint many of you, The World's Best Sex Writing 2005, edited by Mitzi Szereto, is not a compilation of an exposé of steamy sex stories. However, the twenty-five contributions that have been gleaned from such well-known publications and Internet sites as the New York magazine, Newsweek.com, Salon.com, The Sunday Telegraph (London), The Miami Herald, are rather a collection of thought provoking essays, memoirs, and opinions from a wide spectrum of writers and journalists, all pertaining to different aspects of the sexual culture of our times.
Freelance journalist Barry Yeoman relates how one research scientist's study of pornography, prostitutes, and seedy truck stops questioned the integrity and usefulness of the study and why the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development were funding the research.
Initially, the NIH were delighted when the grant proposal arrived in 2002. Apparently, there were very few studies pertaining to long-haul truckers and sexual health. It was pointed out that in the USA there was evidence of an outbreak of HIV among truckers. Furthermore, truckers can affect other groups, once they arrive home. It all blew up when a journalist questioned why the NIH was funding research pertaining to porn and before you knew it congress stuck their noses into the fray, such as Representative John Doolittle, a California Republican, who stated, "this flagrant frittering away of federal funds is borderline criminal." As the Yeoman asserts, "the incivility of the NIH debate has promoted neither good dialogue nor good science."
Sherry F. Colb, a professor at Rutgers Law School, fills us in on the details of a most unusual law suit wherein the plaintiff sued his ex-girlfriend whom he had engaged in oral sex. Apparently, unbeknownst to him, his girlfriend allegedly saved the resulting semen and used it to inseminate herself. The defendant subsequently gave birth and the DNA tests proved to be that of the plaintiff. Interesting enough, the plaintiff only learned about the pregnancy and the birth when he was ordered by the court to pay approximately eight hundred dollars a month in child support.
There is a an OB/GYN who recently founded the Laser Vaginal Institute of Michigan. This enterprising doctor offers his patients several elective female genital surgeries-the primary objective being to enhance sexual gratification for women.
In Alabama, there is a sex-toy ban that was passed by their legislature in 1998 that makes it unlawful to distribute "any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs." As a result of this law, Sherri Williams, owner of a chain of adult stores has spent the past six years suing the state of Alabama to overturn the law.
These are just some of the intriguing commentaries that shed light on our society's sexual hangups, some of which are quite hilarious and at times hypocritical. The World's Best Sex Writing 2005 is a joy to read; hopefully the right open minded readers will discover it.
