This book produces a tangible result in less than twenty pages! For those that cannot concentrate, or their mind wonders, the author has laid out this entire book in Question and Answer format and where appropriate has expanded. The publisher hasn't come across a serious book written anywhere close in this format. This could set the trend for the future! Book Description

With recent downsizing trends, many seasoned executives have left the workforce, taking with them the knowledge and wisdom gained from years of experience. In this dramatized presentation between mentor and students, a veteran business leader takes two young professionals under his wing to show them how to find the inspiration and the self-understanding they need to forge strong ties with their customers and build their careers. Addressing 15 key issues, Jack Carew gives powerful force to such truths as "Life is one big sales call," "Everybody is selling somebody something," and "To be successful in selling, your beliefs have to become your cause." Carew's twenty years of training in sales techniques for such clients as Coca-Cola, Georgia-Pacific, Andersen Consulting, and International Paper give him the background and the expertise to make these truths come alive for any reader in search of success.

2 out of 5 stars Sales maybe, business maybe, not life.......2004-10-13

What is a salesperson, really? Isn't it a middleman who serves as the agent for a seller? Rarely, the salesperson will serve as an agent for the customer or buyer.

Thus, there is a basic contradiction in the lives of most salespeople: they are working on their own behalves and for their suppliers or sellers, but the customer necessarily comes third. This is part of the capitalist system and Jack Carew's little pointers are hardly going to change that, no matter that he dresses it up with "spiritual" recommendations.

To get to the spiritual, the salesperson would finally have to give up playing the "getting game" for himself or herself, but when that happens, the game is over. No more "success" in worldly terms, in terms of monetary gain, in terms of quantity of sales, or even "happiness" of the customers.

A new game has started, that of the spiritual paradox (the sound of one hand clapping?): You give up striving to do for yourself, you give up striving to make the sale, you give up striving to gain the monetary reward, and paradoxically, life takes care of itself.

Don't believe it? Try it. Try it, Jack Carew. Quit trying to swing people over to materialism and capitalism by throwing in a few spiritually-oriented words. It won't work. They're in basic opposition. The way of the world is not the way of the spirit. Sorry to be so preachy. Diximus.

1 out of 5 stars "Pay no attention to the little man behind that curtain".......2000-04-16

What a disappointment. A ficticious "after hours" chat with Tim and Jill and "the mentor" who knows all. Lots of beating around the bush, but no berries. Any author who can't be more direct and uses phrases like "inner knower" to describe intuition and instinct isn't worth reading. Spend your $$ on something else.

4 out of 5 stars A Mentor ... for your job and personal life.......1999-06-10

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding tool for Sales Professionals.......1999-02-17

I was impressed with this book. I ordered 5 to begin with and am now ordering 5 more for my staff. A great tool! A must read.

          Book Description

Star formation is the fundamental cosmic process which makes galaxies visible, and regulates the evolution of normal matter in the Universe. New instruments and technologies are now enabling the exploration of fundamental cosmic processes. Scientists are beginning to understand the beauty and complexity of star and planet formation and their role in cosmic evolution. This fascinating book combines the latest astronomical images and data with descriptions of the exciting recent developments in the study of star and planet formation. The authors discuss isolated star birth in dark clouds, the formation of star clusters and nebulae, the ‘ecology' of interstellar gas and dust, and the violent starbursts that may produce black holes. They relate these processes to the evolution of galaxies and the origin of life on Earth. Written using non-technical language, the book will appeal to readers with an interest in understanding the Universe and our cosmic origins.

5 out of 5 stars Clear Description, Magnificant Photographs.......2007-03-31

Besides having an excellent and clear description of how our current theories think stars are being born, this book has the most spectacular set of photographs I've seen collected in one book. The photographs are from virtually every major telescope on Earth and those that we have put into space. Further the photographs are in every frequenty from radio waves to x-rays.

This book is aimed at the casual, non-technical reader. It is 'math free.' But it still manages to convey the tremendous magnitude, majesty, and mysteries of the universe we can see. Its main subject is the birth of stars, and mostly within our own galaxy, the Milky Way. With the birth of the stars, there is also the death of stars. The book was published in 2006. That was back when Pluto was still a planet -- and that's OK with me, I still think of it as a planet in spite of how the vote went. In its discussion about planets around other stars, it is pretty up to date, but of course new ones are being discovered all the time.

                            Book Description

Stochastic Calculus for Finance evolved from the first ten years of the Carnegie Mellon Professional Master's program in Computational Finance. The content of this book has been used successfully with students whose mathematics background consists of calculus and calculus-based probability. The text gives both precise statements of results, plausibility arguments, and even some proofs, but more importantly intuitive explanations developed and refine through classroom experience with this material are provided. The book includes a self-contained treatment of the probability theory needed for stochastic calculus, including Brownian motion and its properties. Advanced topics include foreign exchange models, forward measures, and jump-diffusion processes.

This book is being published in two volumes. The first volume presents the binomial asset-pricing model primarily as a vehicle for introducing in the simple setting the concepts needed for the continuous-time theory in the second volume.

Chapter summaries and detailed illustrations are included. Classroom tested exercises conclude every chapter. Some of these extend the theory and others are drawn from practical problems in quantitative finance.

Advanced undergraduates and Masters level students in mathematical finance and financial engineering will find this book useful.

Steven E. Shreve is Co-Founder of the Carnegie Mellon MS Program in Computational Finance and winner of the Carnegie Mellon Doherty Prize for sustained contributions to education.

                            4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-10-01

I agree that most concepts are clearly explained....emphasis on *most*. OK, I'll nitpick. And I admit I'm nitpicking. For example, the proof of Jensen's inequality (which he oddly dives into without defining convex functions), is rather non-intuitive, and seems to be more an appeal to the accompanying picture rather than a proof. The proof given under the Wikipedia entry for "Jensen's Inequality" is much clearer, and makes much more sense, at least to my way of thinking. Other than the occassional gaffe such as this, it is a highly readable, informative, and dare I say enjoyable text!

I think its a very good book for fundamental concepts in stocastic calculus.

5 out of 5 stars Good for finanical mathematics graduates.......2007-01-10

clear explanations on binomial models for European and American options. Abstract concepts also included such as change of measures, martingales, stopping times. Proofs in book assumed no knowledge on sigma fields or measure theory.

5 out of 5 stars Very good to understand the basics of pricing-theory........2006-03-04

This book is great book about theory. Using a simple binomial tree as asset evolution model, all key notions are introduced. Neutral-risk probabilities come up in a simple, natural way, and I never found such a clear explanation of the the change of measure and its meaning in finances. Examples help to understand every ussue.

The only case in which you should not buy it: if you are looking for real-market instruments and techniques.

                            4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2006-02-17

I found this book to be a very interesting and fun read. A very helpful introduction to binomimal models and basic stopping time principals. It also provides a great refresher to Martingale principals. If you are having trouble with Shreve's volume II then have a look at this book first.

                            Book Description

This is Unimaginable and Unavoidable (subtitle) Irresponsible Writings on Non-Duality By Guy Smith Foreword by Tony Parsons This first book by Guy Smith addresses the appearance of separation from first-hand experience in an original series of prose, verse and 'notices'. Challenging and original, it constitutes a blast of freedom written in the period six months after awakening. Guy Smith is 24 years old and lives in Bristol. "I love this book! It is passionate, uncompromising, irreverent, intimately openhanded and wonderfully without any sense of order or progression. Throughout the whole work there is very little that the cunning guru mind can get hold of and turn into a belief system. There is a powerful invitation within these outpourings which seems to harbour and generate a feeling of the sensuous, the impersonal, the unbounded mystery that lies beyond the words. This is not a book to wade through steadily, but rather a deep pool in which to dip one's foot . . . and maybe fall in. There is a proliferation of so-called Advaita/Non-dual literature available today, and virtually all of it is borne out of a fundamental misconception about the nature of being. However, during the last decade some rare, clear voices have emerged out of the mist, and Guy's work is surely an inspiring and unique confirmation of this wonderful message." From the Foreword by Tony Parsons

5 out of 5 stars The Power of Zing.......2007-05-18

Guy Smith is a 26 year old man living in Bristol, U.K. This book was written during the six months following enlightenment. The book's purpose is to display Guy Smith's exuberance at being newly enlightened and the nondual wisdom he easily utters. Guy says, "This book is just here." Yes, it's just here and it's just about nonduality. That's good enough for me. I like this book a lot. The style of writing and expression is lively, fun, intelligent, joyous, radical, strong, vulnerable, outrageous, ordinary. It's about nonduality, sex, politics, movies, meditation, sex, pop music, science, art, enlightenment, sex, and pre-enlightenment experience, and more. Mostly it's a compilation of intelligent and sparkling writings on nonduality.

The writings are unstructured. Each chapter is brief, one to four pages. The author could have included the writings on sex, pre-enlighenment, and nondual perspectives, for example, in separate chapters or sections, but instead he scattered them throughout the book. The author explains: "This text is best treated like a treasure-chest filled with diamonds, as opposed to, say, a treasure map." It's an effective way to present the material since it corresponds to what is: "this is." Neither reality nor the book is a bunch of "this is-es" linked together in order to teach something or to capture someone in an entrancing flow of ideas.

Almost half the book is poetry, which ordinarily would make me cringe, as the inclusion of poems by spiritual teachers or confessors is usually self-indulgent. But Smith's poetry is varied in style, easy to read, and not obtrusive. On the other hand, the poetry isn't literary either. Often it is nothing more than prose formatted to look like poetry. And more often than not it is pedestrian nonduality.

But for some reason I either don't mind or actually like the poetry in this book as it exists scattered among the other writings. It's part of the whole work which carries the author's exuberance at being freshly enlightened. And a couple of the poems are actually good.

Smith is quite taken with his new ability, since enlightenment, to write freely. "The [writing about nonduality] is basically effortless. It writes itself. This is actually the same with any literature... . ... There is a certain zing to this direct expressing of oneness that is incomparable."

While Guy Smith is a smart, enlightened guy, I wouldn't call his work literature, nor would I say all literature comes about in an effortless way. What carries this book isn't the uttered truths or the novel structure, and it's certainly not any literary quality; it's the personality, the youthful energy. Yes, it is the zing. Here he is coming from the streets; he's bringing it home:

"There is a song by The White Stripes called The Hardest Button To Button. This is one of the best metaphors for selfhood I have every come across. I am the hardest button to button because however much there is bragging and asserting, defending and justifying, however much effort is put in, there is still no one here, this is still purely the activity of impersonal, characterless consciousness. One tries over and over again to make that button appear through the buttonhole, to make self a real, stable, forceful reality, this effort to be a someone, a free will; but it just won't happen, because it is a lie. There is only consciousness, trying to believe it is a person, but deep down knowing there is no one."

There are lots of little enjoyable confessions and utterances that could be pointed out. Guy Smith sees what any nonduality talker sees right away: that there are two fundamental ways of looking at nonduality: "On the one hand one talks in terms of 'awakening' and 'seeing the true nature of things', which sounds unavoidably like an event, a happening; and on the other hand, when it happens, or rather, when it doesn't happen, it is known that nothing has ever happened, nothing will ever happen, and there is only ever 'perception', or 'oneness'."

One of the last writings in the book reveals Guy Smith's alignment with other nondualists: Sailor Bob Adamson, Leo Hartong, Nathan Gill, Tony Parsons. He calls their approach "pure nondualty." Guy Smith makes it clear that he and the others mentioned are not part of a "pure nonduality" movement. He calls it a non-movement. He calls it stillness, and because it is characterized by stillness there can be no such thing as movement. He writes, "In the appearance of life, within the last twenty years, something new has emerged and is emerging still. Because it is all about stillness, it should not be called a 'movement', so let it be called 'non-movement', or 'stillness'."

Haha. Okay. Listen carefully: It is a movement. If it's not a movement, why even mention it? It has a lineage, sometimes clear, sometimes vague. Because there is a core group of nonduality talkers at its center of gravity it will cause movement, clashes, organization, and disorganization. Anything but stillness. These talkers declare who is nondually correct and who is not correct; who is enlightened and who is not enlightened. They have followings. They have fans. It is nothing less than a movement. And it is organized. However, that's the spin-off of human beings accomplishing things. It doesn't take away from the value of the individual elements -- the people, books, talks -- which might be considered part of some movement.

I found this book to be sort of a poinless, self absorbed ramble. Sounds to me like a lonley guy who had a momentary break in the clouds of a lingering adolescent psychology, which hardly camouflaged some unresovled issues. So, in comparison, it seems a great place to plant his freak flag. I feel comfortable in saying so since, of course, according to the author, there is no him there to have issues.

tidy, oblivious, sense of "me." This isn't some rehash of what has come down from some lineage. This stuff is FRESH and obviously is expressed from direct experience. Don't get me wrong, I love the classics and nisargadatta and all, but this young kid has taken it to a whole new 21st century level. His writing is more "vertical" like poetry (not flowery, though) than traditional, flat prose, and reading it is like falling down a waterfall. Read it. You won't be bored, and if you are like me (I've read EVERYthing on advaita) he will reach places in you that have never been touched.

This book written by a 24 year old who understands that awareness is all that is, cuts through the morass of spiritual disciplines in a radically deconstructionist way reducing what is to "this". In my view, this book can be quite helpful in demonstrating conclusively that an awareness of being, or presence, is all that is--indivisible, immutable, and beyond time and space. The awareness of being is bliss.

"Oneness contains all, all is oneness" so what? It is just like saying " Life is all, all is life." The author did have a momentary experience, but so did many others. Few boasted themselves to be enlightened. The state of oneness did not last in him, so he rushed into conclusions such as above. Ego is also oneness, he said. What a helpful advise!

So from this book, you will know " all is oneness" which includes all the crap. How helpful! Now let's continue to live in our suffering, and the craziness of the world untill one day the earth is totally screwed up!
