Easy to use; very helpful for the most part. Terms are listed in alphabetic order. Each listing consists of the derivation of a term and a brief description of its meaning. Examples are often included. An off-putting feature is a liberal sprinkling of personal opinion and comments.

The Sun's magnetic field is responsible for the spectacularly dynamic and intricate phenomenon that we call the corona. The past decade has seen an enormous increase in our understanding of this part of the solar outer atmosphere, both as a result of observations and because of rapid advances in numerical studies. The YOHKOH satellite has observed the Sun now for over six years, producing spectacular sequences of images that convey the complexity of the corona. The imaging and spectroscopic instruments on SOHO have added information on the cooler part of the corona. And since April of 1998 TRACE has given us very high resolution images of the 1-2 MK corona, at cadences that allow detailed observations of field oscillations, loop evolution, mass ejecta, etc.
This volume contains papers contributed to a workshop (held in August 1999 in Monterey, California) that was dedicated to an exploration of the most recent results on the solar corona, as well as on the transition region and low solar wind. The diverse presentations at the meeting revolved around one key theme: the entire outer atmosphere of the Sun is intrinsically dynamic, evolving so rapidly that even the concept of a single local temperature for a single fluid often breaks down. Moreover, the corona is an intrinsically nonlinear and nonlocal medium. These aspects are discussed in these proceedings that include both papers that review recent developments (both based on observations and on theoretical/numerical modeling), and original research papers based on observations from many different observatories.
The papers presented at the meeting add up to such a volume that they are distributed over two Topical Issues of Solar Physics (December 1999 and April 2000), which are reprinted in these bound volumes, of which this is the second.

The solar transition region that spans the temperature range from about 20,000 to 1,000,000 K separates the solar chromosphere from the corona. All energy that heats the corona and powers the solar wind must pass through this part of the solar atmosphere. This book summarizes recent ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet observations of the transition region, the empirical models derived from them, and the physical models that try to explain both the observations and the empirical models. The observational focus is on quiet solar transition region observations made with Skylab and subsequent rocket and satellite experiments. The book also presents a unified discussion of the analysis of ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet spectroscopic data including the determination of the emission measure and density and temperature diagnostics. This will be useful to astrophysicists who are confronting high-resolution ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet data from astrophysical plasmas for the first time.

The dioxin accident which occurred at the ICMESA chemical plant in the Seveso area of Milan, Italy, in July 1976, has had far-reaching consequences in fields ranging from politics and legislation, to scientific research.

Twenty years after the accident, the Regione Lombardia and Fondazione Lombardia per l'Ambiente organised the meeting "Chemistry, Man and Environment" to assess the current situation in Seveso, and to assemble the latest scientific research achievements in the field. The meeting was attended by the main institutional and technical representatives who had played a key role during the emergency at Seveso and thereafter. Representatives of the Ministry of the Environment, the Regione Lombardia Assessorate for Energy and Environment, the Regional Forest Agency, the PMIP USL 38 and La Sapienza University (Rome) gave a twenty-year historical overview of the administrative and technical measures which led from the emergency to a more normal situation for the population and the environment. The most recent research data related to Seveso were presented by researchers from the Universities of Milano and Pavia, the Joint Research Centre in Ispra, the "Mario Negri" Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milano and the Desio (Milano) Hospital. Major issues addressed involved measurements of the current environmental concentrations of 2,3,7,8-TCDD in different compartments (atmosphere, soil, flora, fauna and food) at Seveso and recent epidemiological data concerning the population originally exposed to dioxin and still under study. Other research results were presented by scientists of institutions from many countries such as the Linköping University Hospital (Sweden), the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda (MD, USA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta (GA, USA), the Free Universität, Berlin (Germany) and the Environmental Protection Office (Bitterfield, Saxony Anhaly, Germany). These contributions covered different issues in dioxin research, reviewing or presenting new information on: (1) the origin, presence and movement of these compounds in the environment, (2) the mechanism of toxic action including new end-points for risk assessment, (3) the use of molecular epidemiology techniques, and (4) reports on other cases of large-scale dioxin environmental pollution.

Very good and interesting.......2006-05-22

I like this book its very interesting and can get so into the story. Its like you are their yourself and trying your best to what you can and understand. I was very excited to see this volume come out and very happy with the results of buying it. It has alot of adventure and conflict which pulls you in even more to keep reading.

An excellent collection of short stories about the .hack world........2006-02-13

This book is not actually a direct sequel to .hack//AI Buster volume one; it is a collection of five short stories about various characters from AI Buster and another .hack series, Legend of the Twilight. The five stories are:

2nd Character/Haruka Muzuhara's Situation: This story retells the events of AI Buster volume one from the point of view of Hokuto, the annoying amateur wavemaster who followed Albireo around. In this story we find out about Haruka Muzuhara, the woman who plays as Hokuto, and learn that she is not such a newbie after all.

Wotan's Spear: This story is a direct sequal to AI Buster volume one and tells the story of what happened to Alibero after the events of the first novel, how he was changed, and why he left The World.

Kamui: This story tells about Alibero's successor, Kamui, and her own disturbing encounter with a Vagrant AI in The World.

Rumor: This story tells about Rena, one of the main characters of the Legend of the Twilight anime and manga, directly before that story began. This was probably the weakest story in the book because it was too short and not much happened.

Firefly: This story is about Hotaru from Legend of the Twilight. It introduces the player behind the character, and tells about how Hotaru first joined the Japanese server of The World and met Sanjuro.

Overall, this was an excellent collection that gives more depth to many of the characters from The World. I'd recommend it to all .hack fans.
