Book Description
The Sixth Edition of FINANCIAL STATEMENT ANALYSIS has been completely revised by new co-author John Wild. The three goals of this revision are: 1. Make financial statement analysis relevant to students; 2. Encourage students to think in an evaluative manner; 3. Make the material accessible and interesting to students. The text has been streamlined from twenty-three chapters to a very manageable thirteen chapters. The new design highlights the currency, enhanced pedagogy, and accessibility for students.
Customer Reviews:
Good content, poor communication.......2000-07-06
I read this book because it was the official textbook for CFA Level 1 test. AIMR later dropped it and returned to White and Sondhi for the year 2000. Personally, I agree.
This should be a fairly good financial analysis book, but because of its uncommunicative wording, it is not appealing indeed. Agree with a reader from England, it is dull.
If the authors add their comments and pour some additional opinion and insights, this book will be much better.
It appears that the book lost its good image (since 1973?) because most of its current readers have read the White & Sondhi's book. If they not read the White & Sondhi before they read this book, they might viewed this book much much better. In my opinion, the readers will get relatively the same knowledge from both books.
objective assessment.......2000-01-01
First published in 1973 and used from inception by the initial CFA program this classic text has been used by many thousands of students and professionalsthrough 6 editions. Please judge this text on its merits and be wary of planted sour grapes comments of a competing text which lost out.
A dreadful book. Do not buy it........1999-09-20
Tried using this turgid volume for 1999 CFA level 1. It is appalling. Technically the authors know their stuff - as one would hope - but they make it as dull as ditchwater. Very hard to read without feeling a pressing need to do something, anything, else. I only give it 1 star because I cannot give it none. AIMR have reverted to the Sondhi & Fried book for L1 and L2. Thank you thank you thank you.
Anyone want to buy a doorstop? One careful owner.
Am I the only one with some common sense here?.......1999-08-22
I was not impressed with this text. Apparently, the folks at AIMR thought it would be a good idea to make guinea pigs out of last year's CFA Level One candidates by forcing this book down our throats. My experience as well as those who worked alongside with me on this book (and numerous others on CFA message boards!) found the text to be as pleasant as eating a cement brick.
To me, the two professors who wrote this book, while very smart, have little or no ability to communicate in clear and simple english the finer points of financial statement analysis. It is a book written by a clique of musty, tome-reading academics, for a similar group of academics. Examples are sparse, obscure, and insufficient. The text is nothing more than a regurgitation of rules, with little attempt at clarification in plain English.
The text can be characterized by its economy of text; outline the point, and let others figure out what it means; move onto the next subject, and be similarly tight-fisted with explanation.
If you want a book that will cost of a lot of money, and one that will likely only line your bookshelf, this is definitely one for you. However, if you want something that you can actually use and understand, then I suggest you pick up Sondhi & Fried's version of "The Analysis and Use of Financial Statements." I opted to buy this text as a companion to the CFA curriculum because of its clarity and generous use of examples. Apparently, because of all the ruckus and distaste for Bernstein & Wild's text last year, AIMR has decided to drop this text from the curriculum, and move back to the tried-and-true Sondhi & Fried text mentioned above.
A challenging accounting text for the student.......1999-02-12
This is the required accounting text for the CFA Level 1 Exam for which I am currently preparing. While many of the other reviews may rate this a great practitioner's reference, I'd like to offer a student's perspective.
I've often needed to re-reference my financial & managerial acct'g text from undergrad days to follow certain sections of this text. AIMR stresses background reading before tackling this text, and they're absolutely right. Bernstein & Wild are no doubt thorough in their work, but don't bother with this text if your not that serious a reader/student.
The questions, problems, exercises, etc. at the end of each section are also thorough, but very few can be traced back to relevant examples in the reading. Unless you purchase the accompanying solutions manual, you're on your own.
The material's level of detail is occasionally abrupt. I've often needed to reread the same sentences several times to reinforce my understanding.
Going forward, this text will no doubt serve me as an excellent reference. But for the time being, it's a challenging text in preparing for the CFA I exam.

Book Description
Every day, professionals are promoted into management, often with less knowledge of leadership than of the tools of their trade. Although there are plenty of management books on the market, few if any address the stickiest issues that hands-on managers face.
Nic Peeling knows the transition to management is tough -- because he went through it on his own. In this book, he's captured all the management advice he wished he had been given.
Dr. Peeling's Principles of Management offers new and experienced managers a handy compendium of pragmatic advice that tackles such questions as: How do you motivate a failing team? How do you inspire an under-performer or terminate a problem staff member? What tasks might you shirkand what rules can you break? When should you retreat from office politics rather than retaliate? What distinguishes a leader from a manager?
These issues and countless others are matched with Peeling's candid, thought-provoking insights. All managers -- and all future managers -- should read this book.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Primer For New Managers.......2005-05-31
This is a great book for new front-line managers (or managers of new front-line managers). It looks at the job from a number of angles. Readers a given a foundation of what leadership is followed by examination of the roles and duties of the front-line manager. The author uses character and principles as the foundation for his philosophy on management.
In this book, one can find practical advice for things ranging from managing staff and project manangement to customer interaction. Having spent two years as a front-line manager before being promoted, I can say that what Dr. Peeling has written rings true based on my experience. I also really liked that he gives not only the what, but the why as well. It is an excellent experience based guide that people can return to as the need arises.
Management wisdom that all managers can use.......2003-12-09
I have done my share of manager bashing, both those I have worked under and in IT in general. However, in their defense, a manager of software development has one of the most difficult jobs there is. To be successful, not only do they have to understand the mundane details of filling in the forms, kissing the appropriate body parts of superiors and all the other details of greasing the process, but they also must know a great deal about software development. Developers are also a difficult group to handle, while some of it is on the par of an urban legend, the stories of their quirks and eccentricities are only slightly exaggerated. Finally, the range of skills between developers is probably greater than that in any other area. Some anecdotal evidence is that the best are thirty times better than the worst, but the most believable is that the ratio is ten times better. Given all this baggage, no wonder managers are strained and they are blamed for project failures.
While Peeling has a doctorate in computing and is a manager of software developers, most of the advice can also be applied to other managerial scenarios. Independent of the context, it all comes down to the people being managed and what they can do. Even though one can buy new tools and go through many gyrations to reduce cost, the best way to increase the numbers on the bottom line is to get more out of the current human assets. That does not always mean working them more hours, but getting more out of the hours they work. Peeling describes many ways to do this, demonstrating a practical sense that all good managers possess in abundance. The best managers know when to mold `em and know when to scold `em and Peeling is clearly an expert in making that type of choice.
Managers that understand the psychology of developers and the technical details of what they do are very rare, and Nic Peeling is a member of that group. In this book, he passes on some of that wisdom, and all managers can benefit from reading it.
A sound and "reader friendly" primer.......2003-04-12
Dr. Peeling's Principles of Management: Practical Advice For The Front-Line Manager by Nic Peeling is a practical survival guide for the tenacious transition of learning how to become a manager. Ranging from practical advice on determining salaries; to handling key team members, under-performing team members, and low-value, high-maintenance team members; to various project management styles and roles; and more, Dr. Peeling's Principles of Management is a sound and "reader friendly" primer which is particularly recommended for the novice manager.
Why has no-one written something like this before?.......2003-03-20
It does 'exactly what it says on the tin' - giving practical and down to earth advice for managers, whilst insightfully highlighting the main issues.
Essential reading for new and experienced managers. My only question is why has no-one written something like this before?

Book Description
The ability to understand and control the unique properties of interfaces has created an entirely new field of magnetism which already has a profound impact in technology and is providing the basis for a revolution in electronics. The last decade has seen dramatic progress in the development of magnetic devices for information technology but also in the basic understanding of the physics of magnetic nanostructures. Volume III describes thin film magnetic properties and methods for characterising thin film structure topics that underpin the present 'spintronics' revolution in which devices are based on combined magnetic materials and semiconductors. The present volume (IV) deals with the fundamentals of spintronics: magnetoelectronic materials, spin injection and detection, micromagnetics and the development of magnetic random access memory based on GMR and tunnel junction devices. Together these books provide readers with a comprehensive account of an exciting and rapidly developing field. The treatment is designed to be accessible both to newcomers and to experts already working in this field who would like to get a better understanding of this very diversified area of research.

Book Description
Astrophysics is facing challenging aims such as deep cosmology at redshift higher than 10 to constrain cosmology models, or the detection of exoplanets, and possibly terrestrial exoplanets, and several others. It requires unprecedented ambitious R&D programs, which have definitely to rely on a tight cooperation between astrophysics and optics communities.
The book addresses most of the most critical interdisciplinary domains where they interact, or where they will do. A first need is to collect more light, i.e. telescopes still larger than the current 8-10 meter class ones. Decametric, and even hectometric, optical (from UV to IR wavelengths) telescopes are being studied. Whereas up to now the light collecting surface of new telescopes was approximately 4 times that of the previous generation, now this factor is growing to 10 to 100. This quantum leap urges to implement new methods or technologies developed in the optics community, both in academic labs and in the industry. Given the astrophysical goals and technological constraints, new generation adaptive optics with a huge number of actuators and laser guide stars devices have to be developed, from theoretical bases to experimental works.
Two other newcomers in observational astrophysics are interferometric arrays of optical telescopes and gravitational wave detectors. Up-to-date reviews of detectors and of spectrographs are given, as well as forefront R&D in the field of optical coatings and of guided optics. Possible new ways to handle photons are also addressed, based on quantum physics. More and more signal processing algorithms are a part and parcel of any modern instrumentation. Thus finally the book gives two reviews about wavefront processing and about image restoration and deconvolution algorithms for ill conditioned cases.

Book Description
Student's love Schaum's--and this new guide will show you why! Graph Theory takes you straight to the heart of graphs. As you study along at your own pace, this study guide shows you step by step how to solve the kind of problems you're going to find on your exams. It gives you hundreds of completely worked problems with full solutions. Hundreds of additional problems let you test your skills, then check the ansers. So if you want to get a firm handle on graph theory--whether to ace your graph course, to supplement a course that uses graphs, or to build a solid basis for future study--there's no better tool than Schaum's. This guide makes a wonderful supplement to your class text, but it is so comprehensive that it can even be used alone as a complete graph theory independent study course!
Customer Reviews:
Not up to the standard of most Schaum's outlines.......2005-12-25
I have bought and used many Schaum's outlines on various subjects in math and science, and I would say that this outline on graph theory is one of the worst. Most Schaum's outlines give you the theory in small doses, with plenty of diagrams to explain the concepts. This outline reads more like one of the textbooks on the subject, however. Theorems and their illustrations are poorly presented, and the author could not have made the subject matter drier and more unappealing if he had tried. You might be able to get something out of it if you are a student of pure mathematics, but you will definitely be disappointed in this book if you are a computer science student. If you are already using a bad textbook for a class in graph theory, this book will only add to your collection of bad unreadable texts on the subject. For computer science students, I suggest that you check out the chapters on graph algorithms in Introduction to Algorithms by Cormen et al. That book has pseudocode, explanations, and diagrams to help you work out implementations of various graphing algorithms.
This book is $$$ for a reason.......2003-01-12
This book was an absolute hell to contend with. I've taken two courses in Graph Theory, using Robin J. Wilson's Introduction to Graph Theory and this cheap broadsheet, respectively. Wilson's book is the one to use! It's extremely well-written, even fun to read--the reviews on Amazon will bear that out.
In the second graph theory course that I took (to refresh and refine my understanding), the professor chose the Schaum text solely for its low cost--he thought he was doing the students a service. Hardly.
No thought whatsoever has been put into the readability of this book. The tiny dark-grey font on light-grey paper is a simple enough design flub that makes reading past even two or three pages at a time almost unbearable. Defining terms is seen as a chore to be compacted--a single page at the beginning of each chapter might try to define 10-15 terms, just to get them out of the way. It becomes a mess of bold print that the reader is forced to continually return to because the definitions come with no context nor examples by which to remember them. In the end, the reader realizes that 2/3 of the book is just list after list of badly-worded questions following under-scripted lessons.
Look, it's not even worth writing any more about, the text frustrates me so much. There's only two other reviews on this page, and I'd place money on them being written by the author himself. Save yourself the $$$ and the hassle, and just go buy Wilson's book. Trust me.
Good Book. I recommend it........2001-05-20
In general, the book not requires study in advance, but it is better for reference. I'm a software engineer and the book's treatment of "Shortest Path" and "Connectivity" problems is very usefull. Good for fast remember of the subject.
A smooth surfing into the amazing world of graph theory.......2000-07-03
In this book one can find a practical survey of both principles and practice of graph theory, with great coverage of the subject. The outhor provides a lots of solved problems, with losts of theory proofs and all with great clarity and common reasoning. The outhor gets you enter the subject step by step from the easy problems to the hardest with great skill. Also the algorithms on graphs presented in this book, and in general the algorithmic approach of this book are presented most clearly. You wouldn't leave this book until you'l finish read it and understand graph theory. Finally you would fill that at least on one branch of mathematics you are well sitted.

Everyone kept asking what I was reading!.......2006-09-15
I read this book a couple of summers ago, it was during a timeframe when I visited the beach almost daily. I laughed so hard and so often that everyone wanted to know what I was reading! I loved this book, it's light-hearted, funny, and made me smile.
I Can't Believe It Got Published!.......2006-09-09
Unrealistic. Immature. Raunchy. Shallow. Each and every character is so ridiculously unscrupulous they seem like parodies of themselves. The heroine's character is largely inconsistent and a bit hard to stomach, much less sympathize with. The ending is so unrealistic and ridiculous that I wished I had followed my instincts and trashed the book by the 2nd chapter.
And what on earth is with all the parenthesis? Every other sentence was in parenthesis. I'm still having nightmares about giant parenthesis invading the planet. Who publishes such sloppy writing? *Shaking head in bewildered disgust*
This was my first Valerie Frankel book and needless to say it will be my last.
I would have rated it Minus one star but unfortunately that option is not available. So, much to my chagrin, I had to give it one star, a very undeserved one.
Pink of Cheek? Oh dear..........2006-05-29
Now before you all start calling me a prude, keep in mind that John Waters' Pink Flamingos is one of my all-time favorite movies. It wasn't the sex that turned me off to this book, it was the distant and rushed writing style. Just because it's chick lit doesn't give the author an excuse to dash off a tell-don't-show borefest.
When the book opened with a description for Stacy being "pink of cheek" I should've known better than to keep reading. Just struck me as hackneyed. Also, the sex (or almost-sex) scenes read as Tab A into Slot B and did very little to tittilate. I honestly don't know why anyone would think this book is funny.
Virgin alert.......2006-01-30
It was not what I expected it kind of dangled in the air in some chapters and I was happy when I finished because I had other books to read.

Fast Moving Read.......1998-02-02
An enjoyable look at some famous and not-so-famous bankrupcty filings. The author's aim is to let anyone who has filed or is considering filing for bankruptcy protection know that they not alone. This is done quite well by examining cases of very large corporations as well as famous individuals who have filed. I would have enjoyed seeing more profiles of individuals, but over all I would say; "Hey Scott, WELL DONE!"
A great book for survivors of bankruptcy!.......1998-01-30
Having experienced a bankruptcy myself, I found this book to be tastefully written and of great interest. It flowed nicely and was easy to read. Having lost my small business, I was surprised to learn about so many major corporations that, too, have had their financial woes. A great book for survivors of bankruptcy! I certainly don't feel so "alone" after reading this. Robert C.
Very interesting........1998-01-30
This book is a very easy read. I was surprised to discover all the famous people, cities and companies have been to bankruptcy court. I also gave it extra points for being written in plain English ... without all the legal jargon.
disappointed.......1998-01-26
While a few of the individual entries were interestings, I was disappointed that the vast majority of entries were businesses. I counted only about 15 individuals. Also no pictures and the writing was at times rather dense.
