Customer Reviews:
NOT "easy to use" but good if you've already studied Spanish.......2006-12-22
I cannot honestly imagine any beginner learning medical Spanish from this book (I'm well aware I could be wrong). However, I recommend it heartily for professionals who have studied general and/or medical Spanish, but don't speak the language fluently, as it makes a very good reference tool for expanding your medical vocabulary in specialized areas. Because the topics are grouped and contextually expressed as questions and basic likely answers, it is more useful than a simple dictionary. I would agree with the reviewer who said the phrases are a mixture of highly complex (and formal) structures with simpler ones.
The grammar topics, in turn, are probably not sufficiently detailed for a beginner, but they would make good refreshers for those who vaguely remember studying, say, the imperfect tense, but don't remember what it's for and don't want an entire review lesson or just a list of forms. It helps if you have enough exposure to Spanish to recognize that the English "translations" of the phrases aren't always exact.
The cultural topics are extremely useful, more so than many newer books. They go far beyond the usual superficial stuff I've seen again and again, discussing such cross-cultural topics as ideas of honor and how this relates to privacy concerns. The vocabulary, too, includes useful tables such as "common children's terms" (the equivalents for "tummy" etc.). In addition to its use for personal review and study, I can see it being used and assigned as part of an advanced practical medical Spanish course offered as a followup to broader beginner and intermediate studies.
Lucky for me we have translators........2006-09-25
Have this, didn't use it..can't imagine popping open a book in front of a patient and reading a line from a book. I think these books are useless in major hospitals. If you're in a community hospital this may be of use since more and more people are less willing to translate out of fear of a lawsuit.
How about a book "Essencial Ingles por los pacientes?"
disapointing.......2002-12-27
The book was disapointing. Material is not organized by the level of difficulty. Very simple sentences and phrases are placed next to gramaticly advanced ones.
"Grammar notes" provide a few very basic grammar rules and are inadequate for the level of gramatical dificulty of many sentences.
The majority of the patient interview questions and recomended phrases are either irrelevant or simply inappropriate.
Buy this book if you want to learn the names of the body parts in Spanish, but do not expect much else of it.
The best book/cassette crash course for health workers.......2001-05-03
There are at least three books on the market for health care workers who wish to learn enough spanish to help their Latino patients. I have all three and think that this is the best one. The others have many dialogues and phrases that are simply unrealistic and would never need to be known by a nurse or a doctor. You end up wasting your time learning phrases that you will never use. This book (be sure to get the cassettes also as they have all of the essential phrases so you can practice your pronunciation) has words and phrases which mirror reality. This is information you can really use. It is amazing how much you can pick up with just a few hours of study. Well worth the price!
Essential Spanish for HealthCare.......2000-06-27
The book, casette, and pocket guide, as a set provide above basic Spanish language available to study and use at work. I have had 2 years of spanish at the college level, this book is advanced enough to be helpful. The pocket guide is portable, and you can quickly look up the area of the body the person is having trouble with. Unfortunately, it cannot keep stressed out parents and children from speaking so rapidly or excitedly to always catch what they are communicating back. If you know some spanish, this set helps as a crutch to get through an initial assessment.

Book Description
For thousands of years the human race has been fascinated by gold. Initially gold was used extensively in coinage and jewellery but today the applications for gold are vast, ranging from metallurgy to physics, chemistry, biochemistry and medicine. Gold: Progress in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Technology is an extremely comprehensive work covering the history of gold, from the work of the early prospectors to the use of gold in decorative effects and dentistry. Further chapters present a complete overview of the current knowledge of gold technology from mineral deposits to technical applications and emphasise the developments in coordination, organometallic and cluster chemistry of gold and its applications in synthesis. An international group of contributors have reviewed the modern advances in the science of gold to produce the first comprehensive monograph reflecting the state of the art, the impact and applications of recent developments in gold research.
Book Description
These counterexamples deal mostly with the part of analysis known as "real variables." The 1st half of the book discusses the real number system, functions and limits, differentiation, Riemann integration, sequences, infinite series, more. The 2nd half examines functions of 2 variables, plane sets, area, metric and topological spaces, and function spaces. 1962 edition. Includes 12 figures.
Customer Reviews:
Classic book, now IN PRINT from Dover.......2007-09-14
All the positive reviews here are true. This is an awesome book that every serious math student should own, especially graduate students preparing for qualification exams. And unlike so many graduate level works this one is a bargain in a well made Dover edition. As one reviewer notes "Just get it".
Recommended by Analysis Professor.......2007-03-13
Counterexamples in Analysis was recommended by our professor as a resource for a course, Introduction to Analysis. It is a support for writing proofs that makes an excellent addition to the home library for mathematics majors. For non-mathematics majors, it makes some important points more clear, but is sometimes not the quickest route to solving problems.
Fascinating and Useful; Maybe a Tad Too Focused.......2006-06-28
I have owned this book for years and have quite enjoyed reading in it. I must admit that I have not read it through; it is tough going. Although it is surely a great book, to my taste it is too thoroughly focused on details of pure analysis and not sufficiently attentive to pedagogy and logic. In fact, it is so focused on the internals of pure analysis that it does not even bother to tell the reader what this field is. It does not note that analytic geometry is the application of pure analysis to geometry or that analytic number theory is the application of pure analysis to the theory of numbers. For more on the nature of pure analysis see page 540 of the 1999 CAMBRIDGE DICTIONARY OF PHILOSOPHY, which included an article "Mathematical Analysis" because of the importance of the subject to philosophy of mathematics. John Corcoran might have had this book in mind when he wrote the following in his abstract "Counterexamples and Proexamples", page 460 in the 2005 BULLETIN OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. I quote the whole abstract because I think that readers will enjoy the book even more if they have Corcoran's ideas in mind--not to imply that I agree with everything Corcoran says there.
"Abstract: Every perfect number that is not even is a counterexample for the universal proposition that every perfect number is even. Conversely, every counterexample for the proposition "every perfect number is even" is a perfect number that is not even. Every perfect number that is odd is a proexample for the existential proposition that some perfect number is odd. Conversely, every proexample for the proposition "some perfect number is odd" is a perfect number that is odd. As trivial these remarks may seem, they can not be taken for granted, even in mathematical and logical texts designed to introduce their respective subjects. One well-reviewed book on counterexamples in analysis says that in order to demonstrate that a universal proposition is false it is necessary and sufficient to construct a counterexample. It is easy to see that it is not necessary to construct a counterexample to demonstrate that the proposition "every true proposition is known to be true" is false - necessity fails. Moreover the mere construction of an object that happens to be a counterexample does not by itself demonstrate that it is a counterexample - sufficiency fails. In order to demonstrate that a universal proposition is false it is neither necessary nor sufficient to construct a counterexample. Likewise, of course, in order to demonstrate that an existential proposition is true it is neither necessary nor sufficient to construct a proexample. This article defines the above relational concepts of counterexample and of proexample, it discusses their surprising history and philosophy, it gives many examples of uses of these and related concepts in the literature and it discusses some of the many errors that have been made as a result of overlooking the challenging subtlety of the proper use of these two basic and indispensable concepts."
Amazon, the most trusted.......2005-10-25
I always trust Amazon.com. I bought the book with low price. Brand new! A very good book which will assist you in understanding of mathematical analysis! Sometimes, if you do not understanding the accurate meaning of a concept, a counterexample would make it easy.
Wish I had this in the beginning.......2005-08-22
This book is an incredible help to those trying to learn analysis. It does a great job showing which "obvious" statements are actually false in a clear and concise way. When theorems seem too abstract the counterexamples in this incredibly cheap book come to the rescue.
Even if you have no trouble with the theory you will need to have examples in your head to do later proofs, especially in other subjects such as functional analysis.
This should be a companion course text it's so useful.
Book Description
A counterexample is any example or result that is the opposite of one's intuition or to commonly held beliefs. Counterexamples can have great educational value in illuminating complex topics that are difficult to explain in a rigidly logical, written presentation. For example, ideas in mathematical sciences that might seem intuitively obvious may be proved incorrect with the use of a counterexample. This monograph concentrates on counterexamples for use at the intersection of probability and real analysis, which makes it unique among such treatments. The authors argue convincingly that probability theory cannot be separated from real analysis, and this book contains over 300 examples related to both the theory and application of mathematics. Many of the examples in this collection are new, and many old ones, previously buried in the literature, are now accessible for the first time. In contrast to several other collections, all of the examples in this book are completely self-contained--no details are passed off to obscure outside references. Students and theorists across fields as diverse as real analysis, probability, statistics, and engineering will want a copy of this book.
Book Description
This volume contains six early mathematical works, four papers on fiducial inference, five on transformations, and twenty-seven on a miscellany of topics in mathematical statistics. Several previously unpublished works are included.
Customer Reviews:
clever collection of counterintuitive examples.......2000-06-14
Although the title suggests statistical examples, the text is primarily a collection of counterexamples in probability. The authors write in an engaging style. This was the first book for both authors but each has gone on to author or co-author at least one other book.
This book is perfect for a graduate student in mathematics or statistics with a serious interest in probability. It is particularly good if they have just completed their first advanced course in probability theory as the concepts would be fresh.
A warning though. This is great for those seriously interested in probability but would be difficult reading for those with just a passing interest.
Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Mathematical Behavior, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
In the study reported here, we investigate the skills needed to validate a proof in real analysis, i.e., to determine whether a proof is valid. We first argue that when one is validating a proof, it is not sufficient to make certain that each statement in the argument is true. One must also check that there is good reason to believe that each statement follows from the preceding statements or from other accepted knowledge, i.e., that there is a valid warrant for making that statement in the context of this argument. We then report an exploratory study in which we investigated the behavior of 13 undergraduates when they were asked to determine whether or not a particular flawed mathematical argument is a valid mathematical proof. The last line of this purported proof was true, but did not follow legitimately from the earlier assertions in the proof. Our findings were that only six of these undergraduates recognized that this argument was invalid and only two did so for legitimate mathematical reasons. On a more positive note, when asked to consider whether the last line of the proof followed from previous assertions, a total of 10 students concluded that the statement did not and rejected the proof as invalid.
Book Description
With adoptions at over 1,300 colleges and universities in its first semester; the Seventh Edition of The Norton Anthology of English Literature continues to be the indispensable anthology. Like its predecessors, the Seventh Edition offers the best in English literature from the classic to the contemporary in a readable, teachable format. More selections by women and twentieth-century writers, a richer offering of contextual writings and apparatus fully revised to reflect today's scholarship make the Seventh Edition the choice for breadth, depth, and quality.
For the first time ever, the acclaimed Norton Anthology of English Literature is available in six separate volumes, each of which cover a specific period of English lit and focus on the wide range of writers and literature, with full annotation and commentary. Adapted unabridged from the full Norton Anthology, this volume is ideal for focused study or specific coursework in the period.
Customer Reviews:
A limited anthology........2006-08-20
Volume 1A: The Middle Ages contains a lot of great selections. A good Beowulf translation, selections from The Canterbury Tales, an enjoyable translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Dream of the Rood, and selections from Morte D'Arthur, Julian of Norwich, and Margery Kempe among them. But the anthology lacks depth and a real representation of the period it deals with. This first volume covers the period from around A.D. 700 to about 1450, by far the longest time frame in any of the six volumes of the Norton Anthology of English Literature, yet this also happens to be the shortest volume in the series. There is a very large corpus of Old English religous poetry and prose, almost all of which is ignored. There are no selections from Alfred, Aelfric, Alcuin, Cynewulf, Wulfstan, only the smallest amount of Bede; no idea is given of the amount of religous poetry, whether of saint's lives or alliterative poetic accounts of Biblical events. OE Religous poetry is represented solely by The Dream of the Rood, which is such a masterpiece it is impossible to ignore it. The same prejudice holds true for the Middle Ages, with religous lit being seen mostly in Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe. These are very good selections, but it seems they were chosen because the writers were women, and not because they represented the literary milieu. In other words, this anthology is heavily biased against religous literature, even though religous literature was dominant throughout this time period. Thus I consider this a very limited anthology, since it by no means accurately represents the literature of the time. Regardless of modern prejudices against religous lit, the Middle Ages were a religous period and any anthology of this period should reflect how the people then thought and felt, not what people now feel.
Norton Knows How to Do It.......2005-10-09
This was great! And a lot cheaper then having to buy the giant version with everything in it. I have many different editions of the Norton Anthologies and this one is on par with all the rest. Definitely recommended! 5 Stars!! Great explanations and citations!
