Games Trainers Play Outdoors.......2006-09-02
As an OD consultant, I have read many books on team building activities. From most books I typically like one out of five exercises. Games Trainers Play Outdoors is awesome! I like every exercise. They are practical and open to adaptations as needed by the audience. I strongly recommend it.
Great Resource!.......2005-06-03
I stumbled across this book and found it to be quite a treasure. I am a youth leader for our church and found these games to be ideal for building unity and having fun together. There are 75 games in all. The games are well illustrated and explained clearly. This is a great resource for fun, purpose-filled games for many age groups.

A very nice book on the outer solar system........2006-02-28
This is a really nice, and cheap, history of the outer solar system. Until recently Saturn was the last known planet. This all changed with the discovery of Uranus by William Herschel in 1781. Since then we have struggled to reveal information about the outer planets. The book covers both the personal lives of the main characters involved in the discoveries as well as the science involved without going into too much technical detail. At the same time it does not tend to oversimplify the significance of the science by using flowery language.
As it was written around 1990 the book is slightly out of date, missing some of the latest discoveries. However, this is forgivable given the books price. I give the book 4 stars because it is not outstanding. It is however very readable and interesting. It would be worth reading for anyone who has a general interest astronomy/space etc.
An excellent, narrowed focus which probes the outer solar system alone.......2005-09-04
Mark Littmann's Planets Beyond republishes the updated, revised 1990 edition to survey the outer planets; from the history of their discovery to modern scientific findings about the planets including Voyageur results. An excellent, narrowed focus which probes the outer solar system alone.

Pleasantly informal and substantial.......2000-07-02
This excellent book on the outer solar system is written for laypeople who want more than a short introduction to the subject. The writing style is informal but very informative.
The book was published in 1988, as Voyager 2 neared Neptune. A 1990 paperback edition describes the actual flyby.
There are chapters on Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, their discoveries, the related discovery of the first asteroids, the Voyagers' Grand Tour, the search for a tenth planet, and more.
The author also remembers the human touch. There is ample discussion of planet discoverers William Herschel, John Adams, Urban Le Verrier, and Clyde Tombaugh. We also learn about the memorable people they worked with, and sometimes against (!)
The author likes sidebars, which are quite interesting and keep the main text from bogging down. There you will find:
* A short biography of Caroline Herschel (William's sister), the first woman professional astronomer;
* Clyde Tombaugh on some of his experiences;
* Gary Flando on his discovery of the Grand Tour;
* James Christy on his discovery of Pluto's moon Charon;
* Galileo's unsuspecting observation of Neptune in 1613;
* The planned Galileo and Cassini missions;
* Much more.
One sidebar strongly supports Pluto's planetary status, but it concedes that if Pluto turns out to be a typical member of a hypothetical asteroid belt beyond Neptune, it might make sense to redesignate Pluto. Four years later, the Kuiper Belt was discovered...
Hopefully Littmann will revise the book again to include the Kuiper Belt, the Hubble Telescope, the latest speculation on Planet X, and more.
Highly recommended.
*****
January 28, 2006: I have just acquired the 1990 paperback edition.
A new 30-page chapter thoroughly covers Voyager 2's 1989 Neptune flyby. The rest of the book is almost unchanged, so the reader can compare speculation and reality.
The book suggests that a proposed 2000-2014 Pluto mission be named Tombaugh. New Horizons is now on the way to a 2015 flyby. It doesn't carry Clyde Tombaugh's name, but it does carry some of his ashes.
Much has happened since Littman's 1990 revision, and indeed since my initial 2000 review. Galileo was crashed into Jupiter after completing its mission. Cassini is at Saturn. Two new moons of Pluto were discovered. Pluto is no longer the largest known object beyond Neptune. There is no consensus whether eight, nine, or ten objects deserve the term planet. If Littman revises the book again, he has a lot of new material to discuss.
Still highly recommended.

Book Description
This book contains selected papers presented at the Thirteenth International Symposium on Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons, held in 1991 in Bordeaux, France. PAH-related topics addressed include standard reference materials, chemical-physical properties, photo-oxidation and phototransformation, organic synthesis of potent PAHs and PAH metabolites, molecular modelling, and theory applied to carcinogenesis and chromatographic separations. Besides presenting some new and promising analytical techniques, PAH analysis is applied to the study of aquatic systems, geological samples, coal and petroleum matrices. PAH exposure and biomonitoring are also discussed. The reader will find valuable ideas and new directions for PAH research which will lead to research initiatives and new progress in our understanding of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons.
Dr. P. Garrigues and Dr. M. Lamotte earned their doctoral degrees from the Université de Bordeaux I, and both currently work there as research directors
Product Description
The purpose of the this book is to put together in one place the basic elementary techniques for solving problems in maxima and minima other than the methods of calculus and linear programming. The emphasis is not on individual problems, but on methods that solve large classes of problems. These methods are organized in terms of the mathematical ideas used, whether from algebra, geometry, the theory of inequalities, and so on. The many chapters of the book can be read independently, without references to what precedes or follows. Besides the many problems solved in the book, others are left to the reader to solve, with sketches of solutions given in the later pages.
Book Description
One of the most vivid, influential, and controversial figures of the American founding, Alexander Hamilton was an unusually prolific and vigorous writer. As a military aide to George Washington, forceful critic of the Articles of Confederation, persuasive proponent of ratification of the Constitution, first Secretary of the Treasury, and leader of the Federalist party, Hamilton devoted himself to the creation of a militarily and economically powerful American nation guided by a strong republican government. His public and private writings demonstrate the perceptive intelligence, confident advocacy, driving ambition, and profound concern for honor and reputation that contributed both to his rise to fame and to his tragic early death.
Arranged chronologically, Writings contains more than 170 letters, speeches, essays, reports, and memoranda written between 1769 and 1804. Included are all 51 of Hamilton's contributions to The Federalist, as well as subsequent writing calling for a broad construction of federal power under the Constitution; his famous speech to the Constitutional Convention, which gave rise to accusations that he favored monarchy; early writings supporting the Revolutionary cause and a stronger central government; his visionary reports as Treasury secretary on the public credit, a national bank, and the encouragement of American manufactures; a detailed confession of adultery made by Hamilton in order to defend himself against charges of official misconduct; and his self- destructive attack on John Adams during the 1800 campaign. An extensive selection of private letters illuminates Hamilton's complex relationship with George Washington, his deep affection for his wife and children, his mounting fears during the 1790s regarding the Jeffersonian opposition and the French Revolution, and his profound distrust of Aaron Burr. Included in an appendix are conflicting eyewitness accounts of the Hamilton-Burr duel.
Joanne Freeman is the editor.

Alexander Hamilton: Writings (Library of America).......2007-01-09
I do not think Library of the America has even put out a bad bood and this is no exception. The contents are of great use to anyone interested in our government. The index in the back is exhaustive and helps greatly. Buy this book.
Essential writings from a great American.......2002-08-06
Alexander Hamilton is one of the most important, most misunderstood and most under studied Americans ever. He is the central figure in establishing the Federal Bank, as different as it is today from what it was then. He is responsible for the majority of the Federalist Papers, the most important documents produced in support of the Federal Constitutuon and the heated debates it entailed. But another thing most people don't know is that he is an American Revolution hero, serving, with distinction under Geroge Washington, receiving his highest praise and becoming his right hand man. He is the most elegant and gifted of writers. To understand his beginnings, read Alexander Hamilton: American by Richard Brookheiser, and understand the humble beginnings he was born into, working as a store clerk in the West Indies, educating himself in America and turning himself into one of the Americans who has a true grasp on the English language. His politics aside, he was a brilliant man. He was a gentleman and he was honest. He was a mna full of pride and great courage. He refused to let himself be bad mouthed, accepting Aronn Burr's duel, but he refused to fire at his opponent, instead firing into the air. A very honourable end to a great American. His writing are essntial to understand his life and his mind, his political orientation and lifelong goals. Not only that, but this is great literature. This receives my highest recommendation.
Alexander Hamilton Speaks for Himself.......2002-03-27
With this volume, the Library of America continues its project presenting the best of American culture and thought in an accessible way.
The subject of this volume is Alexander Hamilton. Although John Adams has frequently been regarded as the least understood of the Founders, Hamilton has his own plausible claim to this honor. History has not treated Hamilton kindly. He has certain obvious flaws in terms of arrogance,temper, and judgment.These flaws are amply revealed in this collection of writings. Hamilton, nevertheless, has much to teach us about government and about our country. This collection of his writings is a treasure.
At the outset, I was reluctant to begin a project of reading this volume through in its entirety. As my reading progressed, I couldn't put the volume down.
The book covers all phases of Hamilton's political and personal life, from its beginnings in what is now the U.S. Virgin Islands to his death at age 49 in the notorious duel with Aaron Burr. The heart of the book begins with Hamilton's role in the Constitutional Convention, in which he advocated for a strong Federal government and, in particular for a strong Executive. The book continues with Hamilton's 51 contributions to "The Federalist" in which he explained the Constitution to the people of the State of New York in terms which remain a seminal exposition of the basic governing document of the United States. Again the focus is on the need for a strong central government with a will and ability to act for the public good.
Hamilton was the first Secretary of the Treasury. This book gives us long selections from his work in which he advocated forcefully for having the Federal government pay the Revolutionary War Debt, for founding the Bank of the United States, and in promoting industry in the fledgling United States. These works divided Hamilton from Jefferson and Madison and became the basis of partisan politics in the United States.
In defending the constitutionality of the National Bank from attacks from Jefferson and Madison, Hamilton set the foundation for an expansive view of the power of the Federal government under the constitution. This view was controversial in its time and remains so. Hamilton's position, however, has largely come to prevail over the years and is an important basis for our governmental structure as it has developed over time.
The book includes Hamilton's public confession of an adulterous affair, his criticism of John Adams which divided and doomed the Federalist party, and Hamilton's own political career, and documents regarding Hamilton's fatal duel with Aaron Burr.
There is much to be learned from this book. Hamilton was a paradoxical figure both behind and ahead of his time. This is a valuable work for understanding our country. Kudos to the Library of America for allowing us to learn.
The best one-volume Hamilton collection ever assembled........2001-10-30
With this volume, Alexander Hamilton assumes his rightful place in the ranks of the Library of America -- not only as a key historical figure in the founding of the Republic, but as a master of political argument and writing. With care and sensitivity, Prof. Joanne B. Freeman of Yale University has assembled the best and most comprehensive one-volume Hamilton collection ever assembled -- but she has done something even more important: She has presented us with a thorough, judicious, and enlightening documentary life of Hamilton. This book will be indispensable to anyone who wants to understand the origins of the Constitution, of the American economy, and of the nation's political system and public life. It also will be indispensable to anyone who wants to understand Alexander Hamilton as a political, constitutional, and economic thinker, as a key shaper of American government and public policy, and as a human being.

Hamilton and his world.......2005-11-10
Alexander Hamilton was born in Edinburgh, Scotland; graduated in 1737 from medical school and immigrated to Maryland in 1739. During this time colonial America was an evolving society. The Itinerarium of Dr. Alexander Hamilton is a primary source from which we gain insight to the societies and towns that formed the new English colonies in America in the 1740s.
Dr. Hamilton joined his brother John, also a physician, in Maryland where he lived since 1720. He settled in Annapolis, where he became popular. Being a doctor did not prevent him from suffering of tuberculosis, which lead him to think that he would never get married. As a bachelor he embarked in a four month tour totaling 1,624 miles departing from Annapolis, visiting Maryland, Portsmouth, and New Hampshire. Dr. Hamilton travels transport us to life in the New England society of the mid eighteenth century.
We are transported to the societies of Colonial North America, settled in small towns made up of brick and wood houses and churches. Each church was of a different denomination. In the center of town the clocks of the main building remind us slow motion movies depicting daily European life inhabited by ordinary people. Hamilton encounters different types of personalities in his travels, like the reverent Mr. Dean who advocated against the attempt to reduce the number of taxables, reminding him of the proverb "the shirt is nearest the skin. Touch a man in his private interest, and you immediately procure his ill will. "
Private interests were of utmost importance during the rapid growth of the New England colonies. The Ohio Valley and the westward rush expansion brought unforeseen problems, mainly because the rush to acquire new land outnumbered the supply. This was an evolving society, where communication networks and newspapers were part of the culture, spreading through the massive influence of outside spectators of the Great Awakening.
Throughout the narrative we perceive the impact of Whitefield's Awakening message around the northern towns inclining people's religious beliefs to either side of the social spectrum, what Hamilton called the "new light bigots," referring to those that take the preached word almost to heart. This Awakening message pushed people outside of institutional structures, infusing a new popular rhetoric very emotional and extemporaneous. Throughout his itinerary, Hamilton dined and traveled with a diverse group of people describing for us the customs of some of these particular towns: Scots, English, Dutch, Germans, Irish, Roman Catholics, Churchmen, Presbyterians, Quakers, Newlightmen, Methodist, Seventh day men, Moravians and Anabaptists .
The towns, at the time, were connected through a network inclusive of post offices, newspapers, and maritime transportation. We learned about towns like Amboy which was older than the city of New York, or Muman's Island , which had a small nation of Mochacander Indians. The way people used to live and behave, much to our surprise, have similarities even 200 years later, such as the citizenry of New York: "The people of New York at the first appearance of a stranger are seemingly civil and courteous, but this civility and complaisance soon relaxes if he be not either highly recommended or a good toaper. " As we can see, news and oral communication were a common thread, and rumor of war, as it does today, moved by word of mouth.
The French-Indian War was about to explode and in almost every town this wind presaging a violence to come was felt; a spiritual awakening did not seem enough. French and English were in perpetual competition , and because of the necessity of land and the imminent westward movement of the New England colonies, tension was accumulating; the outcome was the confrontation of the English against the French and Indians in some sort of confederation. George Washington had the first shot. Traveling was a dangerous adventure at the time
While traveling from town to town, and listening to these rumors, Mr. Hamilton used a letter of recommendation as a good passport to be welcomed in different places. The roads at that time were dangerous, thus many people refrained from travel. This apparently was very serious because Alexander met people that did not know where Maryland was nor of its existence. Some towns where strictly constituted by inhabitants from only one nation as Ransbeck, a German town. In Kingstown he recounts the encounter between a Jew named Abraham Dubois, French by birth, and his dispute with another Englishman about sacred history, particularly the Old Testament, giving us an insight of the importance of religion at that particular time.
Marblehead, a fishing town, had about 5,000 inhabitants but that was not the common case. Each of these cities and settlements, in 1770, had a population inferior to 2,500 people, representing 93% of the colonies; and only towns like the north port cities of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia among others were able to develop trade and manufacturing, as New England which became the slave port in North America acting as big cities for that period of time with a significant influence.
The influence of the European Enlightment was immense, even in America. New ideas, the printing press, the numerous industrial advances, and the steam machines, were mobilizing many to meet in public places and talk about what the present and future held for them in the horizon. Hamilton was enlightened with appreciation; however, he spent time observing other people's behaviors.
Dr. Hamilton is here very hypocritical and intellectually elitist For him it seems nobody was good enough, but himself: "A Pennsylvanian will tell a lye with a sanctified, solemn face; a Marylander, perhaps, will convey his fib in a volley of oaths; but the effect and point of view is the same tho' the manner of operating be different"; as in other parts when he 'burnt' ink, paper, and time just criticizing the different personalities that he met in his journey. Dr. Hamilton's narrative gives us first hand information about the culture, daily life, fears, and the hopes of that generation in particular, which is a grain of sand in what we call History.
