4 out of 5 stars Magic Roadmap to Small Accounting Firms.......2004-11-16

In this era of fierce competition and changing environment, it is increasing difficult to maintain business profits and survive for the small accounting/audit firms. In Singapore, CPAs in the many small and medium size firms are facing declining fees income from audit activities with not much expertise and resources to re-orientate its focus to new growth areas.

Jo Ann Rosen's book is a simple and effective roadmap to orientate itself out of this conundrum. The chapters are peppered with actual experiences from her time in Big 6 then. This is certainly very useful.

All in all, a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone at all levels of organization needs this NOW !!.......1997-01-21

This book is a profound work for those of us trying to create a new work environment which embraces collaboration and a new kind of deep participation at all levels in the organization. The people at the top no longer have all the answers, at many times they have none of the answers. The authors give us a new way to look at how we participate in the workplace and suggest practical, workable ways to explore our own actions and understand the interactions we see going on around us. This book gives a badly needed message to all of us and offers excellent workable approaches to practice. If you want to build a collaborative workplace, then here is one clear, thoughtful, and sensitive path to get there. Every person in every organization should read this and practice it's suggestions over and over and over. Eric B. Hert

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating, True Medical Stories.......2000-04-18

There is more than enough for three or four hit movies in this stunning collection of true medical stories. Len Cerullo, the world's leading laser surgeon, fights a killer brain tumor. Renee Hartz, a beautiful heart surgeon, operates to restore life to a heart-attack victim. Newborn Lauren Agger, dying of a birth defect, is transplanted with a life-saving new heart - on Christmas day. Black psychiatrist Carl Bell fights black-on-black violence with his crusade against handguns. Family physician Charles DeShazer, who grew up in the notorious black ghetto on Chicago's West Side, returns to Cook County Hospital in the old 'Hood to treat his former gang members. Janet Goetcheus, a missionary doctor find Third World poverty while treating the homeless in Washington DC, righ in the shadow of Capital Hill. Especially poignant is a ground-breaking section on confronting the twin epidemics of AIDS and AFRAIDS - the toll caused both by the AIDS virus and by the discrimination against those living with the disease. Leading AIDS doctors and their brave patients share their stories and provide the reader with an inside look at this modern plague. Highlingting a section on preventing heart disease is the chilling story of how former Chicago Mayor Harold Washington totally neglected his health and ate himself to deat. The wife of a wealthy physician share the bittersweet rewards of her lonely life. Wally Schlech, a young disease detective, expalins how he solved an epidemic among pregnant women by tracing it to tainted lettuce. ER nurse Cherie Bremer-Kamp gives a heartbreaking account of watching her physician husband, Chris Chandler, die while climbing a Himalayan mountain, and vowed to return to reach the summit in her husband's honor. She escaped alive, at the cost of losing her fingers and toes. Doctors Treadwell Ireland and Charles Van Corder recall their harrowing memories of invading France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The book concludes with exclusive interviews of Nobelists James D. Watson and Francis Crick, who tell how in 1953, they discovered the "Double Helix" structure of DNA - the secret of life. The accomplishment inspired the dearm of curing cancer and other diseases. The author, Mr. Breo, is the former National Correspondent of The Journal of the American Medical Assoication, and his highly readable reportage brings alive the real world of medicine, as experienced by doctors and their patients.

    Book Description

As late as 1995, the anticipated widespread population of primeval galaxies remained at large, lurking undetected at unknown redshifts, with undiscovered properties. We present results from our efforts to detect and characterize primeval galaxies by their signature high-redshift Lyman-alpha emission lines utilizing two observational techniques: serendipitous slit spectroscopy and narrowband imaging. By pushing these techniques to their utmost limits, we probe the Lyman-alpha-emitting galaxy population out to redshifts as high as z = 6.5. Galaxies at this epoch reside in a universe which is just 800 million years old, a mere 6% of its current age. As such, this work provides one account of the manner by which observational cosmology has recently shifted from merely marveling at the incredible lookback times implied by the first few high-redshift detections, to the routine assembly of high-redshift datasets designed to address specific astrophysical issues.

5 out of 5 stars 'Doctor' Steven Arthur Dawson Comes Out In Style!.......2005-12-28

Steven Arthur Dawson would like you to know something, but he's just a LITTLE bit shy about it. (tee hee!) His proclivities in private life are really none of our business, nor do we want them to be, and yet, like Yukio Mishima's "Confessions of a Mask", he just can't but HELP to make it so.

These two statements, on their bald, pink, and--dare I say it--quivering faces, would seem to be in direct contradiction. But really now, let's be honest: how many times can the words 'turgid', 'dark energy' and 'buttocks' appear in the same work of nonfiction? About 'cosmology', nonetheless?! (Don't know what sort of book lernin' yew gawt out there in California, yew fr'dum-hatin' San Diefranciscanitionites!)

At first, the bullhorn of luridity rang falsely in my ear, even played, as it were, six (perhaps eight) inches from it at THAT. Eventually, however, as the primordial 'Big' bang subsided, and the afterglow of Creation took hold, the elegant choice of metaphor--Multiverse-As-Onanism--reminded me of yet another work of curiously Japanese fiction, namely Junichiro Tanizaki's "The Makioka Sisters". In that work of fiction, the author managed to control his utter disgust for the depiction he chose to represent up until the ultimate sentence of the work, and there remarkably subtly at that: the bride-to-be's diarrhea.

In this piece, however, disgust is not the motivation. Instead, it is the joy and existential ecstasy of a gay man at peace with the multiverse, and his place within it.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-read Ph.D. thesis for the ages.......2005-12-08

Breathtaking in its scope, dazzling in its depth, Lyman Alpha Emitting Galaxies at High Redshift is a nonfiction thriller that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride, leaving you gasping for air and begging for more. Whether you are a veteran spectroscopist or a newcomer to the field, Mr. Dawson's enthusiasm for the subject matter and charming writing style will pull you in and emerse you into a world rich in red-shifted photons and legible plot axes. Buy a copy of Lyman Alpha Emitting Galaxies at High Redshift, strap yourself in and enjoy the ride of a lifetime!

    2 out of 5 stars What a loon!.......2005-12-08

I can't suggest this book as you can't possibly understand it. Face it, YOU didn't go to grad school for 7 years and you certainly did NOT earn a B.S. and B.A. like Dawson (how insecure is this dude?) And, just ask Josh Bloom, Dawson has no freakin clue what serendipitous even means. Nice job with the cover work, and that alone would have earned Dawson 4 stars, but face it, nobody's gonna get past the dedications and if you meet someone who claims otherwise (like the other reviewers) ask them about co-moving volumes at z=5.8 and walk away slowly as they wet themselves with fear... fear of being caught in their own lies. Finally, I don't think science can be used to support or refute the outlandish claim offered in Chapter VI that "going observing with your advisor is like going deer hunting with an accordion." Is this the last we've heard from Dawson on the subject? This detective says yes. Now, put your mother on the phone; I have a few questions I'd like to ask her.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Blossom.......2005-12-08

Dr. Dawson is known for his other-worldly grasp of all things esoteric and his ability to explain them to obtuse minions like me. I'm looking forward to finally understanding lyman-alpha-emitting galaxies at high redshift, and I know that this book will not disappoint! I have been waiting for this book for 6-7 years.

5 out of 5 stars Cover Art is a Winner!.......2005-12-08

I haven't actually read this book yet, but Steve Dawson usually has great things to say. I may purchase it for the cover art alone.

        Book Description

The observational and interpretive tools for the study of chemical evolution are starting to be mature enough that they can be applied with some confidence to extra-galactic systems and integrated populations at increasingly high redshift. This book is devoted to the study of the interplay between different methods of measuring chemical abundances with astrophysical models. Studies of chemical abundances and evolution from stars, inter-stellar medium and local group galaxies at zero redshift to distant galaxies, clusters of galaxies and inter-galactic medium at high redshift are presented. There are also synopses on progress in instrumentation for abundance determination.

              Book Description

The 186th IAU Symposium came at an exciting and perhaps even historic time for extragalactic astronomy. New spacecraft observations plumbed the depths of the Universe out to redshifts of five, while revealing astounding details of nearby galaxies and AGN at intermediate redshifts. Theoretical ideas on structure formation, together with results from detailed numerical modeling, created a comprehensive framework for modeling the formation of galaxies and the transformation of galaxies by interactions and mergers. All these strands came together at the Symposium, as participants glimpsed a developing synthesis highlighting galactic encounters and their role in the history of the Universe. This volume offers professional astronomers, including PhD students, an overview of the rapidly advancing subject of galaxy interactions at low and high redshifts.

                    Book Description

Measuring the masses of galaxies as a function of redshift is perhaps one of the most challenging open issues in current astronomical research. The evolution of the baryonic and dark matter components of galaxies is not only a critical test of the hierarchical formation paradigm, but ultimately also provides new clues on the complex interplay between star formation, the cooling and heating of gas and galaxy merging processes.
This book reviews current techniques to measure the baryonic (stellar) and dark masses of nearby galaxies, and focusses on ongoing attempts to measure these same quantities in galaxies at higher and higher redshifts. It also gives room to future perspectives, with special emphasis on new survey projects and satellite missions.

With adoptions at over 1,300 colleges and universities in its first semester; the Seventh Edition of The Norton Anthology of English Literature continues to be the indispensable anthology. Like its predecessors, the Seventh Edition offers the best in English literature from the classic to the contemporary in a readable, teachable format. More selections by women and twentieth-century writers, a richer offering of contextual writings and apparatus fully revised to reflect today's scholarship make the Seventh Edition the choice for breadth, depth, and quality.

For the first time ever, the acclaimed Norton Anthology of English Literature is available in six separate volumes, each of which cover a specific period of English lit and focus on the wide range of writers and literature, with full annotation and commentary. Adapted unabridged from the full Norton Anthology, this volume is ideal for focused study or specific coursework in the period.

5 out of 5 stars The heart of English Literature .......2005-10-17

In graduate school I read and reread this work, studied and re- studied it.
As it contains many the major masterpieces ( or excerpts of them) of English Literature it is a work which lends itself to this kind of reading and rereading. The introductions to each individual writer are also informative and in many cases a help in reading the work.
It is probably still the best one- volume introduction to English Literature that there is.

2 out of 5 stars WARNING! poetry only........2005-10-16

These authors deserve far more than two stars, but the misleading title doesn't. Buy this book only if you're looking for collections of great poetry/essays; you'll find very few novels/novel segments in here.

This is an excellent reference guide for the English Literature
of the 1600s and 1700s. There is an exhaustive coverage of
                            the following works:
                            o Caedmon's Hymn
                            o Beowulf
                            o Geoffrey Chaucer
                            o Middle Age Lyrics
                            o Sir Thomas Mallory
o Medieval Attitudes Toward Life on Earth
                            o Christopher Marlowe
                            o Sir Thomas Moore
                            o Shakespeare
                            o Sir Walter Ralegh
                            o John Donne
                            o Robert Herrick
                            o George Herbert
                            o John Milton
                            o Richard Lovelace
                            o Samuel Butler
                            o Jonathan Swift
                            o Alexander Pope
                            o Samuel Johnson
                            o James Boswell
o Restoration Literature of the 18th Century

Here is a paragraph from "The Wife of Bath's Tale":
                            "The wise astrologen daun Ptolomce,
That saith this proverbe in his Almageste:
' Of alle men his wisdom is the hyeste
That rekketh nat who hath the world in honde.
By this proverbe thou shalt understonde."

This work is perfect for majors of English literature and
college courses in literature. A beauty of the work is that
it is written in the original English dialect of the
centuries represented. Critiques of this work alone could
fill a dozen or so academic dissertations. The book in my personal library
is an earlier version. There are many subsequent editions. In each subsequent edition, the author has made some additions/deletions.
The subject matter of my review is a late 60s/early 70s version of the book. Check on the Amazon.com for "used books for sale" to acquire the
                            earlier version.

4 out of 5 stars Norton is still the best.......2003-04-22

This second volume of the NAEL covers the expanse of the Romantic Period, the Victorian Age and the 20th Century (or Modern Period). While I did have to get this book for a survey course, I was pleasantly suprised at the vast range of work represented in the text.

Not only does the book include "Cannonical" writers but also more obscure writers that may not be as well known now but were popular during their timeframe. The text has an equal amount of work represented from both women and men and explains the viewpoint of each in relation to what was going on at the time. An example are the women Romantic writers; they viewed things differently than their male counterparts and therefore wrote about different things, had different styles of writing, etc.

Of course, as with all Norton books, there are bios of each author before their selections, introductions to each period, apendicies, bibliographies, essays and a section of goegraphic nomenclature. The book is well formated, foot-noted (not end-noted =)), and the selections are marvelous. Anyone well versed in English literature should have this book on their shelves.

4 out of 5 stars A great anthology of English Literature.......2002-12-04

I had to buy this book for two of my English Literature survey courses. I'm sure that most people who buy this volume do the same--they buy it because they have to. Still, it is an excellent volume and a very thorough survey of English Literature, from the middle ages on down to the nineteenth century.

Highlights from this volume include Seamus Heaney's exceptional translation of Beowulf (in its entirety), Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, many selections from the Canterbury Tales, lots of Shakespeare, and Milton's masterpiece Paradise Lost, reprinted in full.

As I said before, many who buy this volume will do so because they have to. Still, I think most people will find this anthology to be one they will not be selling back at the end of the semester. I know I'll definitely be keeping mine. This is a great place to start a study of English Literature.
