Diversity Directive.......2001-08-20
Hayles and Russell do a stellar job of explaining Diversity in tangible, concrete, user-friendly terms. They avoid the esoteric jargon and verbiage that typically accompany the "softer" disciplines in the business and corporate world. In its place they identify operational definitions and processes as well as empirical results models that can actually be measured using conventional methods. This is an extremely refreshing book that effectively (and efficiently) serves as a wondersful resource for Diversity professionals. It also, just as effectively, educates other interested stakeholders who simply want to better understand this phenomenon that is poised to be the defining factor that will most probably determine the winners and lossers of the early twenty-first century.

Good review book........2001-09-26
I thought this book was a great review of Step 1 material. Has 1,000 questions with pretty good answer explanations.
I would not recommend using this as your only source of questions. However, it is a good question source for rapid review of a lot of information. You can get through the questions rather quickly. Offers a nice change of pace from the NMS series or Board Review Series (which tend to bog you down with long, very detailed answers requiring intense attention).
Highly recommend as an additional source of questions.
P.S. Remember, the best way to score high on Step 1 is QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS!!!
might be good for us graduates but not foreign graduates.......2000-08-20
its a fair source of basic concepts, but lacks the true reflection of standard of difficulty of boards.if you are a foreign medical graduate and have time it's much better to use NMS BOARD SIMULATOR SERIES.
best review book for this examination... strongly recommend.......1998-05-18
This book gives excellent examples of what you will face during the real test. It is a good guideline to show how you are doing in terms of preparation. It gave me great confidence which I desperately needed to do well on this test

good introduction.......2007-08-15
This is my husband's second book. It came out based on a course he taught to undergraduate health science majors at Cal State Long Beach. He taught it successfully twice. It is a clear introduction for the novice like me and has a good set of exercises and references for further reading. Mike works in the pharmaceutical industry and previously in medical devices. He brings his experience to bear on the examples and to motive the students to see the real value of statistics to their future profession. His coauthor also taught the course at cal State Long Beach and provided many of the exercises and some of the applications particularly in the area of epidemiology which is his specialty. The book has been slow to be adopted in some classrooms because of thre novel introduction of bootstrap a technique that many instructors are not familiar with. But if you look at the review in JASA you will see that this is a strength of the book and is presented simply and only for the most basic bootstrap techniques and applications. It is worth the effort to learn these techniques and to choose this book over some competitors that just do the standard things and look exactly like each other.
A book that has a well balanced explanation with math and english........2005-08-27
Biostatistics textbooks usually either concentrate on the math or the explanations, and end up giving an unbalanced idea of the subject at hand.
Texts that choose to have both as different modules, are generally large (therefore more or less reference), expensive and at times incoherent.
I have come across a variety of texts dealing with the subject, from the popular Motulsky's book, Rosner, Dytham and even most of the Wiley series. I have found that this is one of those very few texts available that has a balanced explanation of stat with "the english of it" and "the maths of it".
In general the book follows the same sequence as standard biostatistics courses offered at second year of university. However it assumes the reader knows very little, at that same token the book is not written in a conderscending manner.
It is so well written that it can probably appeal to most readerships (undergraduate that is). It is not only an excellant primer but also a workable textbook.

Customer Reviews:
Unbridled creativity.......2005-03-15
Calvino is one of the most creative writers I've ever had the pleasure of reading. The concept alone of this book is jaw-dropping in its possibilities--a group of strangers come together and tell their adventures through tarot cards. Each tarot combination is illustrated and interpreted by the narrator with ties to several mythological tales. It is all extremely subjective and extremely ambitious.
All of that aside, the concept proved to be more than Calvino could adeptly handle. (He admitted to never being completely satisfied with the book and finally published it as a way to put it to rest) However, I don't think I've ever read another author who could have handled the subject matter better than Calvino. All in all, I would only recommend this to Calvino's most devoted admirers.
Crossing "Castles".......2005-02-22
Italo Calvino was a master of surreal storytelling -- he was, for example, one of only two authors I've seen who could manage a second-person narrative. But his gimmick falls flat in "The Castle of Crossed Destinies," a book that is intriguingly laid out, but never manages to be more than a curiosity.
In the first section, a traveler comes to a castle full of other guests, but for some reason no one there is able to speak. To tell each other about their histories, they use a pack of tarot cards to communicate their stories -- tales about love affairs, ancient cities, and Faustian pacts.
The second is pretty much the same, except that it takes place in a tavern, where mute people are still using tarot cards to describe their pasts. The stories -- evil queens, fallen warriors, even an Arthurian tale -- get darker and stranger, especially when the narrator himself began to describe his own past to the people who are watching him and the cards.
As an idea, tarot cards being used to tell a story is brilliant. Especially since the stories that Calvino spins out are not necessarily the only interpretation -- each card used to tell the story can be interpreted differently. The problem is, in the first half of the book, Calvino tries to apply this to some very boring, straightforward little stories. They tend to stop suddenly, without much of a finale.
The second half of the book uses this gimmick more skilfully, with Calvino writing in greater detail, and using more ornate, atmospheric writing. It feels less like stories wrapped around some cards, and more like stories with cards as illustrations of what might have been. He also adds a more eerie, macabre tale to this half, making it even more engaging.
The first half sags in a big way; it's almost tiring to read. But the second half of "Castle of Crossed Destinies" is where Calvino's tarot gimmick starts to pay off. Interesting, but not all that it could have been.
cult novel that is a literary masterpiece.......2004-03-17
Just as the tarot card reading unfolds in the story, this book has innumerable levels that beg for thought and interpretation: it is part historical novel, part fortune-telling, and part a history of the great classics of western civilization. It is also a fascinating experiment in expanding the literary vehicle, adding the dimension of the cards - functioning as kind of symbolic building blocks as well as a springboard for association - that creates a parallel narrative to the gorgeous descriptive power of the work. Calvino, I feel, has created a work as complex and rich as the best of Nabokov. As with all truly great novels, there is a great deal left unsaid, that the reader can mull over if she so chooses. While the vocabulary was very difficult for my primitive Italian, it was as beautifully written as Calvino's other work.
Warmly recommended.
I find the writing a bit dry..........2003-03-23
... but I'm such an avid Tarot fan that I still recommend this to others who want to see his treatment of the subject.
Naturally, the Tarot is interpretated differently by almost everyone who indulges. But, hey!... that's the point of studying it as far as I'm concerned.
Definitely check this one out!
Amusing for more than a few reasons..........2002-11-21
I'm a beginner at reading Italian literature, but there's a few amusing things Calvino did here...he took pivotal scenes from classic literature that includes the poetic epic Orlando in Love and characters of Shakesphere, works of Renaissance literature, and rematched them to the minature art of the time, tarocchi game cards.
I recognize excerpts of human passions from the poetry epic of Orlando in Love from Matteo Maria Boiardo, the Ferarra count, poet and storyteller for the D'Estes clan in the 1470s in the Castle of Crossed Destinies. Calvino also took parts of the Arthurian romantic tales that Boiardo, Aristo and other courtly poets and 'rematched' them to the trump and other cards of the classic Italian tarocchi. I say rematched, as Boiardo and other poets/artists of D'Estes family members did allegorical praising in their poems or paintings that included direct or thinly disguised praises to their patrons. The patrons appear as romantic heroes amid Greco-Roman, Arthurian or other mythic landscapes. The D'Estes and Visconti-Sforzas were related through marriages and both sets of families have historical tarocchi card sets---but it is the "completed" set from the Milanese Visconti-Sforzas that we are familiar with now.
I thought that I recognized a few of the fictional scenes that Calvino presented from Renaissance sources.
Book Description
A profusely illustrated history of the occult nature of the tarot from its origins in ancient Persia
• Thoroughly examines the original historical source for each tarot card and how the cards’ divinatory meanings evolved from these symbols
• Provides authentic 18th- and 19th-century spreads and divination techniques
• Reveals the divinatory meanings of the cards as understood by diviners in the Middle Ages and Renaissance
The origins of the tarot have been lost in the mists of time. Most scholars have guessed that its origins were in China, Egypt, or India. In Mystical Origins of the Tarot, Paul Huson has expertly tracked each symbol of the Minor Arcana to roots in ancient Persia and the Major Arcana Trump card images to the medieval world of mystery, miracle, and morality plays. A number of tarot historians have questioned the use of the tarot as a divination tool prior to the 18th century. But the author demonstrates that the symbolic meanings of the Major Arcana were evident from the time they were first employed in the mid-15th century in the popular divination practice of sortilege. He also reveals how the identities of the court cards in the Minor Arcana were derived from a blend of pagan and medieval sources that strongly influenced their interpretation in tarot divination.
Mystical Origins of the Tarot provides a thorough examination of the original historical source for each card and how the cards’ divinatory meanings evolved from these symbols. Huson also provides concise and practical card-reading methods designed by the cartomancers of the 18th and 19th centuries and reveals the origins of the card interpretations promoted by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and A. E. Waite.
Customer Reviews:
A Perfect 10.......2006-12-14
Paul Huson has given the reader a well written and researched guide to the tarots and their meanings. Mr. Huson has gone beyond the ordinary tarot books available on the market and given a book akin in many ways to 78 Degrees of Wisdom. I highly reccomend this book to any student of the tarot, you will not be dissapointed.
The definitive study of Tarot symbolism.......2004-08-25
Where Paul Huson's 1972 work `The Devil's Picture Book' presented a rich melange of broad speculations regarding the emblems of Tarot, his new book `Mystical Origins of the Tarot' approaches the subject along entirely different and decidedly radical lines, challenging preconceptions and removing layers of fanciful superimposition which have hitherto obscured Tarot's roots. He subjects the images of traditional Tarot to a penetrating and rigorous process of historical analysis and thematic elucidation employing an approach which can best be described as `symbolic archaeology' - the results are quite remarkable. The research brought to bear on the origins of the enigmatic cards is impressive, thorough and original: for instance the four suits signs of the Minor Arcana are painstakingly traced via the surviving decks of Mamluk Egypt to the heraldic symbols denoting the Four Virtues and the four Mazdean castes of ancient Persia. An important paradigm-shift in understanding is achieved via the author firmly locating each of the figures of the Major Arcana in the beguiling world of popular religious dramas, mysteries and miracle-plays in the High Middle Ages - he even provides examples of their speeches from the original dramas. The chapter on the Major Arcana in this context is as illuminating as it is convincing.
Furthermore Paul Huson goes deeply into the traditions underpinning the cartomantic significance of each card, giving the divinatory rundown from Pratesi's Cartomancer of 1750 to A.E. Waite in 1910 along with his own suggested keywords for readings. One surprising turn-up for the books transpires when the author locates the direct source of the Golden Dawn Decanic system of the Minor Cards in the section on the 36 Decan images in Book II of the Arab grimoire called the Picatrix. The 16 legendary personages identified with the court cards likewise opens up fascinating points of symbolic comprehension.
The sections on practical cartomancy will be found invaluable by both beginners and seasoned users of the cards: a great deal of utile information and insight is imparted which will facilitate practise. I especially like the techniques for `linking' the cards.
The above gives but an indication of some of the absorbing contents of this inspiring book. In its own way the research it unfolds is as compelling to follow as a detective story as the author indefatigably tracks down the emblematic minutiae of Tarot symbolism to their archaic and mediaeval originals.
Ranging with great erudition from Shia, Sufi and Magian symbologies, to Neoplatonic doctrines, mediaeval mystery-plays, 18th century cartomancers and scholarly art history this packed study delivers such a veritable feast of fresh information and insight on the subject of Tarot that beginners and veteran tarotists alike will find it a real treat to read and an indispensable resource for reference. It is illustrated throughout with a wealth of examples of card-images, allegorical emblems and images skilfully executed by the author. This is very likely the definitive study on the subject. Highly recommended.
Paul Huson has done it again!.......2004-06-27
Mystical Origins of the Tarot is a wonderfully researched history of the Tarot. Mr. Huson gives the reader a fascinating look into this ancient science and for the novice it is a "must have" volume. Beautifully illustrated, the cards are presented and defined with colourful historical facts. The various"spreads" are explained with clarity and simple easy to follow directions. In my first attempt at a "layout" the divination which appeared made perfect sense to me. This is a very special gift for anyone interestd in the Tarot.
