If you really want to get a "hands on approach" to how to record everthing your learning in the text. This is an awesome addition. It will take time though, so don't try to use it in a summer course. (like I did). But I got another one for the Fall class.

I picked this book because I thought it might help me home school tutor my son. Boy, was I right!!
This book gives me many delightful ways to tutor my son in any topic. The games are simple to follow and easy to adapt -- if I can adapt them, anyone can. And, my son loves the games. Now, he looks forward to sitting down and learning with me.
I would recommend this book to ANY parent who home schools or tutors on a part-time or full-time basis. Imagine, having a lesson that your child WANTS to sit-down and learn with you!

Too many errors in the answer key!!.......2006-05-21

1. The format is not uptodate.
2. Frustration with all the incorrect or messed up "answer key". Dangerous if you don't know the subject very well, because you may not realized the provided answer is in fact incorrect. Sometimes this problem is obvious because four of five statements are correct, and the question forgot to ask for the incorrect one, but other times they just provide a incorrect letter that does not make sense.
3. Do not WASTE your money.

The book develops the statistical approach to inverse problems with an emphasis on modeling and computations. The framework is the Bayesian paradigm, where all variables are modeled as random variables, the randomness reflecting the degree of belief of their values, and the solution of the inverse problem is expressed in terms of probability densities. The book discusses in detail the construction of prior models, the measurement noise modeling and Bayesian estimation. Markov Chain Monte Carlo-methods as well as optimization methods are employed to explore the probability distributions. The results and techniques are clarified with classroom examples that are often non-trivial but easy to follow. Besides the simple examples, the book contains previously unpublished research material, where the statistical approach is developed further to treat such problems as discretization errors, and statistical model reduction. Furthermore, the techniques are then applied to a number of real world applications such as limited angle tomography, image deblurring, electrical impedance tomography and biomagnetic inverse problems. The book is intended to researchers and advanced students in applied mathematics, computational physics and engineering. The first part of the book can be used as a text book on advanced inverse problems courses.

The authors Jari Kaipio and Erkki Somersalo are Professors in the Applied Physics Department of the University of Kuopio, Finland and the Mathematics Department at the Helsinki University of Technology, Finland, respectively.

The book is an extended application of Bayesian analysis. Complicated by the presence of noise, which is an unfortunate reality in all practical cases. Thus the book also decribes various models of noise. Where typically, but not always, the noise is assumed to be additive to the signal in question. Long standing Monte Carlo simulation ideas are applied in a Markov manner. Some of this should be familiar to readers in fields like materials science and image processing.

Numerous applications are given in the text. Notably for XRay and optical wavelength tomography. But more generally, to finding the source in a system modelled Maxwell's Equations, where the source is reflecting or radiating.

"Keep the Aspidistra Flying," published in 1936 during the Depression, is a satire on the literary life, and an examination of poverty in London.

Orwell chronicles a period in the life of disaffected twenty-nine year old, Gordon Comstock, who leaves his "good job" in advertising to work in a bookshop, and to pursue his ambition of becoming a poet. Gordon is of middle-class upbringing, which incidentally, along with his resilience, the Aspidistra symbolises.

Gordon is obsessed with money, and believes that commerce is the cause of all society's problems and attempts to drop out of the capitalist system altogether. He refuses to advance himself in life, defying pressure from family and friends. He falls willingly into the abyss of poverty and self-neglect, until he is trapped by circumstances into embracing the very values that he formerly despised.

Having declared war on what he calls the "Money God," Gordon wants to live by his own values, not those of a corrupt, materialistic system, which grinds the life and spirit out of people.

Gordon soon finds that money is all he thinks about. He does not find happiness having renounced the values that others live by. Forced to live in squalid lodgings, he believes that others reject and despise him because of his poverty. He cannot relate to his moneyed friend Ravelston on equal terms and blames his poverty for the fact that his girlfriend, Rosemary, will not go to bed with him. Nothing seems to go right for Gordon.

The novel's power is in the honesty and directness of Orwell's realist writing. He is ruthless and unsparing in his portrayal of the sordidness of poverty, down to its smallest detail, and it is this which gives "Keep the Aspidistra Flying" a place in the tradition of the novel of poverty.

"For if in careless summer days in groves of Ashtaroth we whored, repentant now, when winds blow cold, we kneel before our rightful lord; the lord of all, the money-god, who rules us blood and hand and brain, who gives the roof that stops the wind, and, giving, takes away again." Keep the Aspidistra Flying is the story of a man named Gordon Comstock. Described by Orwell as a lowly middle classed man tortured by money or rather the lack there of. As I read this book (having read many of Orwell's works) I found myself sucked into this mans life and trouble.
Orwell takes a break from his usual socialist-satire to depict middleclass London in the late 1930's. Orwell's main character Gordon is a striving poet living in London in 1936. He works in a bookstore and lives in a dirty little apartment. Living day to day trying to make ends meet. Gordon's sweetheart Rosemary personifies all that is good in Gordon's life. Other than Rosemary, Gordon seems to utterly hate what he has become and blames his troubles on one essential thing he calls the money-god. The book revolves around this financial war with Gordon in the middle trying not to become a part of it and yet must if he is to support Rosemary.
The title of this book comes from a plant (called an aspidistra) known for its resilience to weather and abuse. It was a popular addition to the windows of many middle-class Londoners in the 1930's. Although Gordon owns one he despises it because it reminds him of his mediocrity. He often burns its leaves with the butts of his cigarettes.
The third main character, Ravelston, is Gordon's lighthearted and wealthy friend. He is always trying to help Gordon with his problems, both financial and social and yet Gordon will have none of it believing that if he accepts Ravelston's help, it will make him less of a man.
The novel often focuses on Gordon's thoughts. He often goes off into these little ramblings criticizing people for there faults and yet not taking responsibility for his own. There in lies the irony.
The book had a late but powerful message of family, Orwell himself praising the family oriented society. If you're looking for the 1984/Animal Farm satire Orwell is so known for, you won't find it here. That said, I loved this book and would recommend it to any Orwell fan.

....maybe it is to Orwell's credit that his ideas are so different than other authors. Maybe it is to his credit that there is so much going on in this little tome.
To me, "Keep the Aspidistra Flying" is an insighful, empathetic exploration of a fundamental paradox of modern life:
Should an educated man sell his soul and work a lucrative job for a big business doing something he doesn't care about or believe in - and lead any easy life of comfort and confidence?
Or should a man stand up to the money God and to the false prophets of materialism and respectibility and work a humble, honest job - and pay for his righteousness with perpetual poverty and insecurity?

**it is a very important question, and Orwell doesn't give the answer that you think. He is known as a socialist, but Orwell is primarily a great humanitarian and social philosopher.
as a former starving graduate student who now works a cushy corporate job for a big credit card company, i know from personal experience that Orwell knows exactly what he is talking about and the lessons he teaches are as true today as they were in interwar England.

This novel is so excrutiatingly brilliant that it has become required reading on all morose and self-pitying nights. Do yourself a favour: BUY IT, READ IT & GIVE IT TO OTHERS. Truly, he is without equal.

Orwell lampoons middle class respectability.......2006-05-20

Gordon Comstock is an underemployed poet in 1930's London who is revolted by the commercial society in which he lives and detests what he call the " Money God". He consistently rebels against anything resembling middle-class respectabilty. Despite the efforts of his few friends, girl friend and sister he continues to sink financially and rejects their advice and offers of help. In modern terms Gordon fights relentlessly against "selling out".
In the end circumstance get the better of him and he too gets absorbed in the dominant commercial culture.

The aspidistra , a simple houseplant , symbolizes middle-class respectabilty and is used throughout the book as a point of reference for Gordon's distain of the money-culture.

While not one of Orwell's better known works this book is well worth the time of those interested in his ideas regarding capitalism and the dominant commercial culture of his times.

It only contains what the description says it contains: "Animal Farm", "Burmese Days", "A Clergyman's Daughter", "Coming up for Air", "Keep the Aspidistra Flying", and "1984". These particular writings are complete and unabridged, but these are not the complete writings of Orwell.

Of course they're good, but the title is very misleading. Don't be fooled into thinking it's everything he wrote.

One World?.......2002-05-12

Since each of Orwell's books have sufficient reviews (raves), I won't bore you with repetition.

I was suprised that this compilation (officially called "The Complete Novels") is not officially available on Amazon.com. If you'd like a single book with "all" of Orwell's novels, it is available via the Amazon.co.UK site. Nothing fancy, just the stories. The only drawback is that the print font is smaller than in most books. For most, this will not be a problem, though.

Be careful: although called "The Complete Novels", it doesn't include "Down and Out in Paris and London" or a couple of his other books. Maybe they weren't considered novels.
